Observation of anisotropic Dirac cones in the topological material Ti 2 Te 2 P

Anisotropic bulk Dirac (or Weyl) cones in three-dimensional systems have recently gained intense research interest as they are examples of materials with tilted Dirac (or Weyl) cones indicating the violation of Lorentz invariance. In contrast, the studies on anisotropic surface Dirac cones in topological materials which contribute to anisotropic carrier mobility have been limited. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we reveal the anisotropic surface Dirac dispersion in a tetradymite material Ti 2 Te 2 P on the (001) plane of the Brillouin zone. We observe quasielliptical Fermi pockets at the M ¯ point of the Brillouin zone forming the anisotropic surface Dirac cones. Our calculations of the Z 2 indices confirm that the system is topologically nontrivial with multiple topological phases in the same material. In addition, the observed nodal-line-like feature formed by bulk bands makes this system topologically rich.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the topological semimetal SmMg 2 Bi 2

Dirac semimetals show nontrivial physical properties and can host exotic quantum states like Weyl semimetals and topological insulators under suitable external conditions. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements (ARPES) and first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that the Zintl-phase compound SmMg 2 Bi 2 is in close proximity to a topological Dirac semimetallic state. ARPES results show a Dirac-like band crossing at the zone center near the Fermi level (E F ), which is further confirmed by first-principle calculations. Theoretical studies also reveal that SmMg 2 Bi 2 belongs to a Z 2 topological class and hosts spin-polarized states around the E F . Zintl's theory predicts that the valence state of Sm in this material should be Sm 2+ , however, we detect many Sm-4f multiplet states (flat-bands) whose energy positions and relative intensities suggest the presence of both dominant Sm 2+ and minor Sm 3+ . The small concentration (2.5%) of Sm 3+ in the bulk of a crystal is inferred to arise from Sm vacancies in the crystal. It is also evident that these flat bands and other dispersive states are strongly hybridized when they cross each other. Due to the presence of Sm 3+ ions, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility χ (T) shows a Curie-Weiss-like contribution in the low-temperature region, in addition to the Van Vleck-like behavior expected for the Sm 2+ ions. The present study will help to better understand the electronic structure, magnetism, and transport properties of related materials.

Large bilinear magnetoresistance from Rashba spin-splitting on the surface of a topological insulator

In addition to the topologically protected linear dispersion, a band-bending-confined two-dimensional electron gas with tunable Rashba spin-splitting (RSS) was found to coexist with the topological surface states on the surface of topological insulators (TIs). Here, in this paper, we report the observation of large bilinear magnetoresistance (BMR) in Bi 2 ⁢Se 3 films decorated with transition-metal atoms. The magnitude of the BMR sensitively depends on the type and amount of atoms deposited, with a maximum achieved value close to those of strong Rashba semiconductors. Our first-principles calculations reproduce the quantum well states and reveal sizable RSS in all Bi 2 ⁢Se 3 heterostructures with broken inversion symmetry. Our results show that charge-spin interconversion through RSS states in TIs can be fine tuned through surface atom deposition and easily detected via BMR for potential spintronic applications.

Magnetic excitations in the square-lattice iridate Ba 2 ⁢IrO 4

Here, we report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of ultrathin epitaxial films of Ba 2 ⁢IrO 4 , and compare their low-energy magnetic and spin-orbit excitations to those of their sister compound Sr 2 ⁢IrO 4 . Due to the 180° Ir-O-Ir bond, the bandwidth of the magnon and spin orbiton is significantly larger in Ba 2⁢ IrO 4 , making it difficult to describe these two types of excitations as separate well-defined quasiparticles. Both types of excitations are found to be quite sensitive to the effect of epitaxial strain. In addition, we find that the f-level inversion observed in Sr 2 ⁢IrO 4 is absent in Ba 2 ⁢IrO 4 , as predicted in recent theoretical studies. Our results illustrate that the magnetic properties of Ba 2 ⁢IrO 4 are substantially different from those of Sr 2 ⁢IrO 4 , suggesting that these materials need to be examined more carefully with electron itinerancy taken into account.

Unique signatures of the Rashba effect in the magneto-optical properties of two-dimensional semiconductors

Herein, the authors theoretically demonstrate two simple magneto-optical measurements which can be used to confirm the existence of Rashba terms in two dimensional semiconductors, even in samples of unoptimal quality, where the transition line widths are comparable to or larger than the Landau level splitting. The first is magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), where a giant MCD signal should be observed at the band edge in the presence of Rashba terms. The second is the comparison of the diamagnetic shift measured in absorption with that in photoluminescence which occurs from the dispersion minimum of the Rashba exciton.

Measurement of the conduction band spin-orbit splitting in $\mathrm{WSe_2}$ and $\mathrm{WS_2}$ monolayers

We have investigated charge tunable devices based on $\mathrm{WSe_2}$ and $\mathrm{WS_2}$monolayers encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. In addition to the well-known radiative recombination of neutral and charged excitons, stationary photoluminescence measurements highlight a weaker-intensity optical transition that appears when the monolayer is electrostatically doped with electrons. We have carried out a detailed characterization of this photoluminescence line based on its doping dependence, its variation as a function of the optical excitation power, its polarization characteristics, and its g factor measured under longitudinal magnetic field. We interpret this luminescence peak as an impurity-assisted radiative recombination of the intervalley negatively charged exciton (triplet trion). In addition to the standard direct recombination, the triplet trion has a second recombination channel triggered by elastic scattering off the short-range impurity potential. The energy difference between the emitted photons from these two possible recombination processes of the same triplet trion is simply the single-particle conduction band spin-orbit splitting Δ c . We measure Δ c = 12 ± 0.5 meV for the $\mathrm{WSe_2}$ monolayer and Δ c = 12 ± 1 meV for the $\mathrm{WS_2}$ monolayer. Here, these results demonstrate the importance of second-order exciton recombination processes in transition-metal dichalcogenide structures.

Magnon orbital angular momentum of ferromagnetic honeycomb and zigzag lattice models

By expanding the gauge 𝜆 𝑛 ⁡(𝐤) for magnon band 𝑛 in harmonics of momentum 𝐤=(𝑘,𝜙), we demonstrate that the only observable component of the magnon orbital angular momentum 𝑂 𝑛 ⁡(𝐤) is its angular average over all angles 𝜙, denoted by 𝐹 𝑛 ⁡(𝑘). Although 𝐹 𝑛 ⁡(𝑘) vanishes for antiferromagnetic honeycomb and zigzag (0<𝐽 1 <𝐽 2 ) lattices, it is nonzero for the ferromagnetic (FM) versions of those lattices in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. For a FM zigzag model with equal exchange interactions 𝐽 1⁢𝑥 and 𝐽 1⁢𝑦 along the 𝑥 and 𝑦 axes, the magnon bands are degenerate along the boundaries of the Brillouin zone with 𝑘 𝑥 −𝑘 𝑦 =±𝜋/𝑎 and the Chern numbers 𝐶 𝑛 are not well defined. However, a revised model with 𝐽 1⁢𝑦 ≠𝐽 1⁢𝑥 lifts those degeneracies and produces well-defined Chern numbers of 𝐶𝑛=±1 for the two magnon bands. When 𝐽 1⁢𝑦 =𝐽 1⁢𝑥 , the thermal conductivity 𝜅 𝑥⁢𝑦⁡ (𝑇) of the FM zigzag lattice is largest for 𝐽2/𝐽1>6 but is still about four times smaller than that of the FM honeycomb lattice at high temperatures. Due to the removal of band degeneracies, 𝜅𝑥⁢𝑦⁡(𝑇) is slightly enhanced when 𝐽 1⁢𝑦 ≠𝐽 1⁢𝑥 .

Observation of flat and weakly dispersing bands in the van der Waals semiconductor Nb 3 Br 8 with breathing kagome lattice

Niobium halides, Nb 3 ⁢X 8 (X=Cl,Br,I), which are predicted two-dimensional magnets, have recently gotten attention due to their breathing kagome geometry. Here we have studied the electronic structure of Nb 3⁢ Br 8 by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations. ARPES results depict the presence of multiple flat and weakly dispersing bands. These bands are well explained by the theoretical calculations, which show they have Nbd character indicating their origination from the Nb atoms forming the breathing kagome plane. This van der Waals material can be easily thinned down via mechanical exfoliation to the ultrathin limit and such ultrathin samples are stable as depicted from the time-dependent Raman spectroscopy measurements at room temperature. Finally, these results demonstrate that Nb 3 ⁢Br 8 is an excellent material not only for studying breathing kagome induced flat band physics and its connection with magnetism but also for heterostructure fabrication and for practical application.

Time-reversal invariant topological moiré flat band: A platform for the fractional quantum spin Hall effect

Motivated by recent observation of the quantum spin Hall effect in monolayer germanene and twisted bilayer transition-metal-dichalcogenides (TMDs), we study the topological phases of moir twisted bilayers with time-reversal symmetry and spin sz conservation. By using a continuum model description which can be applied to both germanene and TMD bilayers, we show that at small twist angles the emergent moir flat bands can be topologically nontrivial due to inversion symmetry breaking. Each of these flat bands admits a lowest-Landau-level description for each spin projection in the chiral limit and at magic twist angle. Furthermore, this allows for the construction of a many-body Laughlin state with time-reversal symmetry which can be stabilized by a short-range pseudopotential, and therefore serves as an ideal platform for realizing the so-far elusive fractional quantum spin Hall effect with emergent spin-1/2 U(1) symmetry.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Here, we study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and π quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana π mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy π, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both π and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Giant nonreciprocity of current-voltage characteristics of noncentrosymmetric superconductor–normal metal–superconductor junctions

Here we develop a theory of nonreciprocal current-voltage (I-U) characteristics in noncentrosymmetric superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions. We show that at small voltages the nonreciprocal features of the I-U characteristics can be expressed entirely in terms of the dependence of the nonreciprocal part of the quasiparticle density of states in the normal metal part of the junction on the order parameter phase difference chi across the junction. The amplitude of the nonreciprocity in this regime is proportional to the inelastic quasiparticle relaxation time $\tau_{in}$, and can be much larger than that in normal materials, where it is proportional to the elastic relaxation time $\tau_{el}$. At low bias the I-U characteristics possess additional symmetry not present in normal conductors; they remain invariant under simultaneous reversal of current, voltage, and the magnetic field.

Observation of paramagnetic spin-degeneracy lifting in EuZn 2 Sb 2

Taken together, time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetries impose a twofold spin degeneracy of the electronic states in crystals. In centrosymmetric materials, this degeneracy can be lifted by introducing magnetism, either via an externally applied field or through internal magnetization. However, a correlated alignment of spins, even in the paramagnetic phase, can lift the spin degeneracy of electronic states. Here, we report an in-depth study of the electronic band structure of the Eu-ternary pnictide EuZn 2 Sb 2 through a combination of high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations. An analysis of the photoemission line shapes over a range of incident photon energies and sample temperatures is shown to reveal the presence of band spin-degeneracy lifting in the paramagnetic phase. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results are in good agreement with theoretical ferromagnetic-phase calculations, which indicates the importance of ferromagnetic fluctuations in the system. Through our calculations, we predict that spin-polarized bands in EuZn 2 Sb 2 generate a single pair of Weyl nodes. Our observation of band splittingin EuZn 2 Sb 2 provides a key step toward realizing time-reversal symmetry breaking physics in the absence of long-range magnetic order.

Anisotropic weak antilocalization in thin films of the Weyl semimetal TaAs

Device applications of topological semimetals await the development of epitaxial films in the ultrathin limit. Weak antilocalization (WAL) has been extensively utilized in the understanding of surface states in topological insulators and shows promise for use in elucidating the properties of thin film topological semimetals. Here, we report insights from WAL in the surface state and interface transport properties of our recently synthesized single-crystal-like thin films of the Weyl semimetal TaAs(001) grown on GaAs(001). We observe robust, anisotropic WAL in the magnetoconductance from 2 to 20 K in films from 10 to 200 nm thick. We link the anisotropic WAL magnetoconductance to anisotropic mobility stemming from film topography. We conclude that WAL in the films likely originates from the antilocalization of topological surface states. The WAL magnetoconductance is impacted by the film thickness and topography, solidifying the useful role of WAL in the study of topological semimetal/semiconductor heterointerfaces. X-ray dichroism as a probe of orbital quenching and unquenching induced by optically excited Jahn-Teller modes

The use of soft-X-ray spectroscopy to probe changes in the ground-state due to vibronic excitations is studied. The changes in L-edge X-ray absorption on divalent cobalt in the presence of a vibrating Jahn-Teller distortion are calculated. For linear dichroism, a strong dependence on the distortion is obtained reflecting the change in the local quadrupole moment due to the changes in the xy versus yz/zx hole densities during the oscillation. Here, in the presence of a magnetic moment, significant variations in the circular dichroic signal are obtained related to the quenching and unquenching of the orbital angular momentum.

Uncertainty quantification of transition operators in the empirical shell model

While empirical shell model calculations have successfully described low-lying nuclear data for decades, only recently has significant effort been made to quantify the uncertainty in such calculations. Here, in this study, we quantify the statistical error in effective parameters for transition operators in empirical calculations in the sd (1s 1/2 -0d 3/2 -0d 5/2 ) valence space, specifically the quenching of Gamow-Teller transitions, effective charges for electric quadrupole (E2) transitions, and the effective orbital and spin couplings for magnetic dipole (M1) transitions and moments. We find the quenching factor for Gamow-Teller transitions relative to free-space values is tightly constrained. For effective M1 couplings, we found isoscalar components more constrained than isovector. This detailed quantification of uncertainties, while highly empirical, nonetheless is an important step towards interpretation of experiments.

From Trivial Kondo Insulator Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 to Topological Nodal-Line Semimetal Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4

In this work, using the density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory, we have performed systematic study of the electronic structure and its band topology properties of Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 and Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 . At high temperatures ( ~ 290 K ), the electronic structures of both compounds resemble the open-core 4 f density functional calculation results. For Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 , clear hybridization gap can be observed below 72 K, and its coherent momentum-resolved spectral function below 18 K exhibits an topologically trivial indirect gap of ~ 6 meV and resembles density functional band structure with itinerant 4 f state. For Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 , no clear hybridization gap can be observed down to 4 K, and its momentum-resolved spectral function resembles electron-doped open-core 4 f density functional calculations. The band nodal points of Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 at 4 K are protected by the gliding-mirror symmetry and form ringlike structure. Therefore, the Ce 3 Pt 3 Bi 4 compound is topologically trivial Kondo insulator while the Ce 3 Pd 3 Bi 4 compound is topological nodal-line semimetal.

Remote Mesoscopic Signatures of Induced Magnetic Texture in Graphene

Mesoscopic conductance fluctuations are a ubiquitous signature of phase-coherent transport in small conductors, exhibiting universal character independent of system details. Here, however, we demonstrate a pronounced breakdown of this universality, due to the interplay of local and remote phenomena in transport. Our experiments are performed in a graphene-based interaction-detection geometry, in which an artificial magnetic texture is induced in the graphene layer by covering a portion of it with a micromagnet. When probing conduction at some distance from this region, the strong influence of remote factors is manifested through the appearance of giant conductance fluctuations, with amplitude much larger than e 2 / h . This violation of one of the fundamental tenets of mesoscopic physics dramatically demonstrates how local considerations can be overwhelmed by remote signatures in phase-coherent conductors.

Quantifying Spin-Mixed States in Ferromagnets

We quantify the presence of spin-mixed states in ferromagnetic 3D transition metals by precise measurement of the orbital moment. While central to phenomena such as Elliot-Yafet scattering, quantification of the spin-mixing parameter has hitherto been confined to theoretical calculations. We demonstrate that this information is also available by experimental means. Comparison of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show that Kittel’s original derivation of the spectroscopic g factor requires modification, to include spin mixing of valence band states. Our results are supported by ab initio relativistic electronic structure theory.
