Combining Generative Modeling and Advanced Control for Building Scenario Generation

Buildings make up a large portion of energy consumption in the U.S. today. Understanding their energy consumption patterns can improve their efficiency, but requires detailed models that rely on incomplete or unknown information. Previous work has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to predict missing information and even suggest upgrades to improve building efficiency. However, building upgrades may require undesirable upfront costs. Oppositely, advanced control could improve building efficiency with negligible upfront cost. To explore the tradeoffs between these two approaches, in this work we propose a workflow to compute optimal temperature setpoint schedules to minimize energy consumption and operational cost. Results show that modifying the temperature setpoints in a building using model predictive control (MPC) can effectively reduce its energy consumption and operational cost. This optimal operation cannot fully meet a desired goal. However, we show that by considering MPC in addition to component upgrades, a desired goal can be met with significantly less upfront costs.

Developing high performance RF heating scenarios on the WEST tokamak

High power experiments, up to 9.2 MW with LHCD and ICRH, have been carried out in the full tungsten tokamak WEST. Quasi non inductive discharges have been achieved allowing to extend the plasma duration to 53s with stationary conditions in particular with respect to tungsten contamination. Transitions in H mode are obtained lasting up to 4s with weak energy increment at the power crossing the separatrix is close to the threshold. Hot L mode plasmas (Te(0)>3keV) with a confinement time following the ITER L96 scaling are routinely obtained. The weak aspect ratio dependence of this scaling law is confirmed. Tungsten accumulation is generally not an operational issue on WEST. Difficulty of burning through tungsten can prevent from accessing to a hot core plasma in the ramp-up phase or can lead to rapid collapse of the central temperature when radiation is enhanced by a slight decrease of the temperature. Apart few pulses post-boronization, the plasma radiation is rather high (Prad/Ptot~50%) and is dominated by tungsten. This fraction does not vary as the RF power is ramped up and is quite similar in ICRH and/or LHCD heated plasmas. An estimate of the contribution of the RF antennas to the plasma contamination in tungsten is given.

Accessing technical data bases using STDS: A collection of scenarios

A line by line description is given of sessions using the set-theoretic data system (STDS) to interact with technical data bases. The data bases contain data from actual applications at NASA Langley Research Center. The report is meant to be a tutorial document that accompanies set processing in a network environment.

On the lower mass limit for the carbon detonation scenario

The lower mass limit for carbon detonation (about 4 solar masses) is due to an argument by Paczynski (1970) that stars in the range between 1.4 and 3.5 solar masses will lose their envelopes prior to carbon detonation. This argument is based on two criteria for mass loss: (1) the envelope is unstable to adiabatic oscillations, and (2) the total energy of the envelope is positive. Recent hydrodynamic calculations of red-giant envelopes have shown that the envelopes are highly nonadiabatic and that the second criterion is not a sufficient condition for mass loss. Thus, a calculation which takes into account the nonadiabatic nature of the envelope is required in order to determine the lower mass limit for carbon detonation. This lower mass limit is directly related to the formation mechanisms and statistics of supernovae and pulsars.

Generating social impact scenarios: A key step in making technology assessment studies

The MITRE methodological studies were conducted to define relevant questions in relation to the concept of total impact analysis and to provide a procedure for integrating diverse checklists of questions which trace the initial and secondary impacts of any major technological application or of society's attempts to respond to or redirect that application. Some of the results of that study are presented in tabular form.

A scenario on polarization in a planetary atmosphere

A great deal of information can be obtained about aerosol and Rayleigh scattering by observing the polarization state for both reflected and transmitted radiation. Results of neutral point behavior are presented for (1) a Rayleigh or molecular scattering atmosphere; (2) a haze L distribution of aerosols typical of those found in the earth's atmosphere; and (3) two actual models of the earth's atmosphere which combine Rayleigh scattering with a normal aerosol content and with a one-third normal aerosol content.

Satellite Power System (SPS) financial/management scenarios

The possible benefits of a Satellite Power System (SPS) program, both domestically and internationally, justify detailed and imaginative investigation of the issues involved in financing and managing such a large-scale program. In this study, ten possible methods of financing a SPS program are identified ranging from pure government agency to private corporations. The following were analyzed and evaluated: (1) capital requirements for SPS; (2) ownership and control; (3) management principles; (4) organizational forms for SPS; (5) criteria for evaluation; (6) detailed description and preliminary evaluation of alternatives; (7) phased approaches; and (8) comparative evaluation. Key issues and observations and recommendations for further study are also presented.

The 25 kW power module evolution study. Part 1: Payload requirements and growth scenarios

Payload power level requirements and their general impact on the baseline and growth versions of the 25 kW power module during the 1983 to 1990 period are discussed. Extended duration Orbiter sortie flight, supported by a power module, with increased payload power requirements per flight, and free-flyer payload missions are included. Other payload disciplines considered, but not emphasized for the 1983 to 1986 period include astrophysics/astronomy, earth observations, solar power satellite, and life sciences. Of these, only the solar power satellite is a prime driver for the power module.
