STTR Phase I: Microfluidic Printing of High Performance Microgrids for High Efficiency, Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diodes Technical Report
Electroninks has been approached, and received strong interest from customers including chemical companies, device integrators, and final device producers. We have gained substantial customer traction in diverse markets as detailed in our Phase I report, and are currently sampling customers in the US, as well as Asia which is where the consumer/industry electronics supply chain is primarily positioned. The results reported here combined with our customer traction to date encourage us to apply for the Phase II stage of this work with the goal to advance the commercialization of our metal grids and particle free conductive inks.

Impact of synchronous condensers on fault location and black start in multi-inverter isolated microgrids
Synchronous condensers have been used in power systems for decades, but they are now attracting interest as a potential means for solving certain issues associated with inverter-based resources in islanded power systems. They have been extensively studied in applications to large wind farms and weak grids, but there has been very little study of synchronous condensers in intentionally-islanded systems, and especially self-healing ones. This report documents the results of an LDRD project intended to create modeling tools for use in the study of synchronous condensers in these smaller off-grid systems, and to explore synchronous condensers in this application. The results indicate that synchronous condensers have the potential to provide many benefits, but there are also several unanswered questions and technical challenges requiring further study.

Wide Bandgap Solid State Circuit Breakers for AC and DC Microgrids
The objective of the project is to develop a new class of ultrafast, self-powered, programmable, autonomously operated, bidirectional solid state circuit breakers (SSCBs) using wide band gap (WBG) semiconductors with 1000X reduction in response time and 5X reduction in cost in comparison to commercial mechanical circuit breakers. In particular, we have developed two SSCB prototypes of 380VDC/220VAC/20A and 1000VDC/10A using GaN power switches for common distribution-level AC and DC voltages.

SCORE (Synthesis of COnsists as Rolling Energy microgrids) (Final Technical Report)
The SCORE toolset is an open source, web-based application to assess the impact of new powering technologies on railroad performance, specifically technologies capable of both putting power into the rail (motive force) and taking power from the rail (regeneration). SCORE’s primary goal is generate trade studies to analyze different powering and train make-up options to minimize energy usage and greenhouse gas generation. At the core of generating these trade spaces is calculating the optimal powering policy for the train given the makeup of the train, the route, and time constraints. This paper presents details on the algorithms used in SCORE to compute this powering policies that is fast and accurate, discusses its implementation in an Energy-Longitudinal Train Dynamics (E-LTD) model, compares it to naïve approaches, and demonstrates its use across a variety of train/route pairs.
