Postflight analysis of the EVCS-LM communications link for the Apollo 15 mission

Data from the Apollo 15 mission were used to compare the actual performance of the EVCS to LM communications link with the preflight performance predictions. Based on the results of the analysis, the following conclusions were made: (1) The radio transmission loss data show good correlation with predictions during periods when the radio line of sight was obscured. (2) The technique of predicting shadow losses due to obstacles in the radio line of sight provides a good estimate of the actual shadowing loss. (3) When the transmitter was on an upslope, the radio transmission loss approached the free space loss values as the line of sight to the LM was regained.

High data rate coding for the space station telemetry links.

Coding systems for high data rates were examined from the standpoint of potential application in space-station telemetry links. Approaches considered included convolutional codes with sequential, Viterbi, and cascaded-Viterbi decoding. It was concluded that a high-speed (40 Mbps) sequential decoding system best satisfies the requirements for the assumed growth potential and specified constraints. Trade-off studies leading to this conclusion are viewed, and some sequential (Fano) algorithm improvements are discussed, together with real-time simulation results.

A surface wave spread spectrum communication link.

This development has resulted in a fast lock-up, 8-MHz bandwidth, 8-KHz data rate, spread spectrum communication link breadboard that is implemented using surface wave devices as the primary signal generators and signal processing elements. It uses surface wave tapped delay lines (SWTDL's) in the transmitter to generate the signals and in the receiver to match filter detect them. The system also incorporates a re-entry delay line (circulating integrator) which increases the effective code length per data bit by eight-fold.

A modified quadrupole mass spectrometer with custom RF link rods driver for remote operation

A commercial quadrupole residual gas analyzer system has been upgraded for operation at extended cable lengths. Operation inside a vacuum chamber for the standard quadrupole nude head is limited to approximately 2 m from its externally located rf/dc generator because of the detuning of the rf oscillator circuits by the coaxial cable reactance. The advance of long distance remote operation inside a vacuum chamber for distances of 45 and 60 m was made possible without altering the quadrupole's rf/dc generator circuit by employing an rf link to drive the quadrupole rods. Applications of the system have been accomplished for in situ space simulation thermal/vacuum testing of sophisticated payloads.

DIALOG: An executive computer program for linking independent programs

A very large scale computer programming procedure called the DIALOG Executive System has been developed for the Univac 1100 series computers. The executive computer program, DIALOG, controls the sequence of execution and data management function for a library of independent computer programs. Communication of common information is accomplished by DIALOG through a dynamically constructed and maintained data base of common information. The unique feature of the DIALOG Executive System is the manner in which computer programs are linked. Each program maintains its individual identity and as such is unaware of its contribution to the large scale program. This feature makes any computer program a candidate for use with the DIALOG Executive System. The installation and use of the DIALOG Executive System are described at Johnson Space Center.

A TDM link with channel coding and digital voice.

The features of a TDM (time-division multiplexed) link model are described. A PCM telemetry sequence was coded for error correction and multiplexed with a digitized voice channel. An all-digital implementation of a variable-slope delta modulation algorithm was used to digitize the voice channel. The results of extensive testing are reported. The measured coding gain and the system performance over a Gaussian channel are compared with theoretical predictions and computer simulations. Word intelligibility scores are reported as a measure of voice channel performance.

Laser data links for communication satellites

Laser data relays potentially offer continuous 1 Gb/sec bandwidths, drastically increasing low-altitude satellite data collection capacity over present store-and-dump techniques. Availability of the laser link as a reliable alternative, operating within conventional low-altitude communication subsystem weight and power allocations, will create customer pressure for adoption. Major communication relay system impacts are discussed including reliability, mechanical design, attitude control, on-board data handling, contamination control, and traffic-net management. Interface parameters which drive the fundamental relay satellite design concepts are discussed, and conditions requiring early quantitative analysis are identified.

Further examination of pilot instrument scanning data and development of a new link value estimator

Pilot instrument scanning data collected during simulated transport instrument landing approaches is examined. Deterministic features of random pilot instrument scanning behavior are confirmed to be: transitions in point of eye fixation which originate and terminate on the same instrument are rare; and transitions in point of eye fixation which originate on one secondary instrument and terminate on another secondary instrument are rare. Link value estimators are developed using statistics and these experimental facts. The result has a special significance when there is but a single primary instrument, a flight director. The result is used to simplify the iterative computational procedure of STI's display theory to a non-iterative procedure for the flight director case.

Digital simulation of a communication link for Pioneer Saturn Uranus atmospheric entry probe, part 1

A digital simulation study is presented for a candidate modulator/demodulator design in an atmospheric scintillation environment with Doppler, Doppler rate, and signal attenuation typical of the conditions of an outer planet atmospheric probe. The simulation results indicate that the mean channel error rate with and without scintillation are similar to theoretical characterizations of the link. The simulation gives information for calculating other channel statistics and generates a quantized symbol stream on magnetic tape from which error correction decoding is analyzed. Results from the magnetic tape data analyses are also included. The receiver and bit synchronizer are modeled in the simulation at the level of hardware component parameters rather than at the loop equation level and individual hardware parameters are identified. The atmospheric scintillation amplitude and phase are modeled independently. Normal and log normal amplitude processes are studied. In each case the scintillations are low pass filtered. The receiver performance is given for a range of signal to noise ratios with and without the effects of scintillation. The performance is reviewed for critical reciever parameter variations.

Climatic change by cloudiness linked to the spatial variability of sea surface temperatures

An active role in modifying the earth's climate is suggested for low cloudiness over the circumarctic oceans. Such cloudiness, linked to the spatial differences in ocean surface temperatures, was studied. The temporal variations from year to year of ocean temperature patterns can be pronounced and therefore, the low cloudiness over this region should also show strong temporal variations, affecting the albedo of the earth and therefore the climate. Photographs are included.

Evaluation of the feasibility of using the data collection system to operate a network of hydrological and climatological stations at sites remote from normal communication links

The author has identified the following significant results. The General Electric DCP has proven to be a versatile, rugged piece of hardware and has surpassed original expectation; it is very simple to use and does not require skilled staff for its use, installation, and operation. It is well suited for use in remote sites where no power is available. From this experience, it is concluded that the data collection system will be very useful in operating a network of hydrometeorological stations situated in sites remote from normal communication links.

Nonlinear Equations of Motion for Cantilever Rotor Blades in Hover with Pitch Link Flexibility, Twist, Precone, Droop, Sweep, Torque Offset, and Blade Root Offset

Nonlinear equations of motion for a cantilever rotor blade are derived for the hovering flight condition. The blade is assumed to have twist, precone, droop, sweep, torque offset and blade root offset, and the elastic axis and the axes of center of mass, tension, and aerodynamic center coincident at the quarter chord. The blade is cantilevered in bending, but has a torsional root spring to simulate pitch link flexibility. Aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are derived from strip theory based on quasi-steady two-dimensional airfoil theory. The equations are hybrid, consisting of one integro-differential equation for root torsion and three integro-partial differential equations for flatwise and chordwise bending and elastic torsion. The equations are specialized for a uniform blade and reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by Galerkin's method. They are linearized for small perturbation motions about the equilibrium operating condition. Modal analysis leads to formulation of a standard eigenvalue problem where the elements of the stability matrix depend on the solution of the equilibrium equations. Two different forms of the root torsion equation are derived that yield virtually identical numerical results. This provides a reasonable check for the accuracy of the equations.
