Dynamic variations observed in thermal and superthermal ion distributions in the dayside ionosphere of Venus

In-situ measurements of the ion composition and concentration of the ionosphere of Venus are obtained with the Bennett RF ion mass spectrometer (OIMS) on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO). Dayside ion profiles exhibit considerable variability in the height of the ionopause as well as the scale heights of the ion constituents, which reflect the compression and expansion of the ionosphere in response to solar wind variations. Near the dayside upper boundary of the thermal O+ distribution, super-thermal ions are detected by the OIMS, presenting a complication for identifying the ion signature of the ionopause. Correlated with the presence of the superthermal ions, the ac electric field detector (OEFD) detects regions of intensified signals, with peak response in the 100 Hz frequency channel. It is expected that further analysis of the superthermal ion-electric field signatures will contribute to a clearer understanding of the physical processes underlying the formation of the ionopause.

Analysis and interpretation of lidar observations of the stratospheric aerosol

Data obtained with a 48 in. telescope lidar system are compared with results obtained using a one-dimensional stratospheric aerosol model to analyze various microphysical processes influencing the formation of this aerosol. Special attention is given to the following problems: (1) how lidar data can help determine the composition of the aerosol particles and (2) how the layer corresponds to temperature profile variations. The lidar record during the period 1974 to 1979 shows a considerable decrease of the peak value of the backscatter ratio. Seasonal variations in the aerosol layer and a gradual decrease in stratospheric loading are observed. The aerosol model simulates a background stratospheric aerosol layer, and it predicts stratospheric aerosol concentrations and compositions. Numerical experiments are carried out by using the model and by comparing the theoretical results with the experimentally obtained lidar record. Comparisons show that the backscatter profile is consistent with the composition when the particles are sulfuric acid and water; it is not consistent with an ammonium sulfate composition. It is shown that the backscatter ratio is not sensitive to the composition or stratospheric loading of condensation nuclei such as meteoritic debris.

The Inertial Upper Stage - A space transportation system element nearing first flight

The Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) developed by the USAF and NASA is a highly reliable, cost-effective solid propellant upper stage, with inherent flexibility and adaptability for integration with the Space Shuttle. The propulsion system is simple, utilizing safe, solid rocket motors with extremely light-weight nonmetallic cases and nozzles. The IUS can deliver 2268 kg from the Shuttle to geosynchronous altitude; it consists of a 9700 kg propellant weight first stage, an interstage structure, a 2720 kg propellant weight second stage, and an equipment support section. The avionics system includes the electronic and electrical hardware used to perform all signal conditioning, data processing, and software formatting associated with navigation, guidance, control, data management, and redundancy management. The generic thermal design of the IUS is suited to a wide range of thermal environments; the software design provides for selectable thermal maneuvers (rotisserie, reciprocating, toasting, space facing, sun facing) to satisfy different payload thermal requirements. A 1982 launch with the Titan 34D and a 1983 launch with the Shuttle Orbiter are planned.

Application of In Situ Fiberization for fabrication of improved strain isolation pads and graphite epoxy composites

The feasibility of applying the in situ fiberization process to the fabrication of strain isolation pads (SIP) for the Space Shuttle and to the fabrication of graphite-epoxy composites was evaluated. The ISF process involves the formation of interconnected polymer fiber networks by agitation of dilute polymer solutions under controlled conditions. High temperature polymers suitable for SIP use were fiberized and a successful fiberization of polychloro trifluoroethylene, a relatively high melting polymer, was achieved. Attempts to fiberize polymers with greater thermal stability were unsuccessful, apparently due to characteristics caused by the presence of aromaticity in the backbone of such materials. Graphite-epoxy composites were fabricated by interconnecting two dimensional arrays of graphite fiber with polypropylene IS fibers with subsequent epoxy resin impregnation. Mechanical property tests were performed on laminated panels of this material to evaluate intralaminar and interlaminar shear strength, and thus fracture toughness. Test results were generally unpromising.

Advances in high output voltage silicon solar cells

Solar cells have been fabricated from 0.1 ohm-cm, p-type silicon by means of a two-step diffusion process of emitter formation in order to delineate the factors limiting V(oc) in conventionally structured cells with the goal of achieving 700 mV. The cells are 200 microns thick and 2 x 2 cm in area with a planar front surface that has an anti-reflection coating of tantalum oxide, as well as Cr-Au-Ag contact metallization on both sides of the cell. The Cr-Au-Ag is applied over an aluminum diffused layer on the back, while it is applied through small holes in the anti-reflection coating on the front. Results show that the best of these cells exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 654 mV under AMO illumination.

Fuel Vaporization Effects

A study of the effects of fuel-air preparation characteristics on combustor performance and emissions at temperature and pressure ranges representative of actual gas turbine combustors is discussed. The effect of flameholding devices on the vaporization process and NOx formation is discussed. Flameholder blockage and geometry are some of the elements that affect the recirculation zone characteristics and subsequently alter combustion stability, emissions and performance. A water cooled combustor is used as the test rig. Preheated air and Jet A fuel are mixed at the entrance of the apparatus. A vaporization probe is used to determine percentage of vaporization and a gas sample probe to determine concentration of emissions in the exhaust gases. The experimental design is presented and experimental expected results are discussed.

Curvilinear Ground on Mars: the Search for Terrestrial Analogs

Curvilinear features on Mars have dimensions ranging from 0.5 to 18.6 km in length and 0.2 to 2.0 km in width; these landforms can occur as curving ridges and troughs, rimless arcuate depressions, or features with no apparent relief. The Martian curvilinear ground has a relatively consistent relationship to both regional and local geomorphology. These landforms are one of a suite of features that occur near the base of the regional slope that marks the transition from the cratered uplands to the northern plains. Based on morphologic similarities, numerous terrestrial analogs were proposed for these Martian features. These include gilgai, backwasting scarps, solifluction lobes, ice-cored ridges and glacial moraines. Process models for the origin of the curvilinear ground suggest that its formation probably involved several processes, including scarp retreat by backwasting.

Study of the sulphur-containing molecules in the EUV region. IV - The dissociation processes of SO2 in the 760 A region

The fluoresence throughout the VUV and violet regions has been observed from photoexcitation of SO2, and the absolute fluorescence cross sections of the VUV emissions have been measured at selected atomic emission lines and in the synchrotron radiation continuum from 550 to 760 A. Emissions from the O I 1304 A and several S I lines account for the fluorescence observed in the VUV region, while the fluorescence observed in the UV and violet regions is due to excited SO and, also, possibly to excited SO2(+) and SO(+). Structure in the VUV fluorescence excitation function is attributed to predissociation of Rydberg states. The VUV fluorescence resulting from an O2 elimination process, SO2 + h times nu yielding metastable S + O2, has been observed in the present work although the threshold for this process has not been determined. The threshold corresponding to the total dissociation process, SO2 + h times nu yielding metastable S + 2O, has been measured and found to agree reasonably with the expected value calculated from thermochemical data. The processes for the formation of S(+) are also discussed.

Light Variations of the B-type Star HD 160202

Light variations of the B-type star HD 160202 in the galactic cluster M6 are presented. A flare type increase in brightness by about three magnitudes in a time interval of 40 minutes was recorded. It is shown that a B-type star in the galactic cluster M 6 went through the process of shell formation and a flare type increase in brightness in a time interval of three years. Similar cases associated with B-type stars were reported in the past; however, they represent sporadic and accidental observations. The observations presented here show a flare-type event with a resolution of five minutes.

The Structure and Composition of Uranus and Neptune

Uranus and Neptune form a special class of planetary objects; intermediate in mass and composition between the giant Hydrogen-rich planets, Jupiter and Saturn, and the small, rocky terrestrial planets. Their structure and composition are not only of intrinsic importance, but also should provide information as to the nature of the protoplanetary nebula and the processes of planetary formation. A detailed set of theoretical models of these planets within the framework of two and three shell models was constructed. The ratio of ice to rock (1/r) is varied. The three shell model fits the data on the two planets best.

Occurrence of oxidized components in Qingzhen enstatite chondrite

It is shown that the most unequilibrated enstatite chondrite, Qingzhen, contains a population of enstatite grains which appear to have formed under more oxidizing nebular conditions than the bulk of the meteorite, which is highly reduced. These grains are black in transmitted light because of the presence of micron-sized inclusions of Ni-poor, Cr-rich metal, and occur either isolated within the matrix or in chondrule interiors. The textural occurrence of these grains argues against their having been introduced during collision of Qingzhen with an oxidized meteorite. Most likely, they originated in the same general nebular neighborhood of the reduced bulk Qingzhen material and were subsequently transported into the reducing environment either before or during the process of chondrule formation. The discovery of this once-oxidized material in Qingzhen posed significant constraints on existing models of formation of reduced matter in the solar system.

Infrared and millimeter-wave observations of the Sharpless 156 molecular cloud

Comprehensive near-infrared, far-infrared, and CO measurements of the Sharpless 156 region reveal five distinct sources embedded in a giant molecular cloud. These embedded sources, which appear to have formed independently within the cloud, form a diverse collection of objects; these include a prestellar condensation, massive stars with associated reflection and emission nebulosity, a bright compact H II region, and possibly even a luminous, post-main-sequence M star. The majority of the cloud has been mapped in (C-12)O and (C-13)O and has been surveyed at 2.2 microns. Also presented are 40-160 micron far-infrared maps and 1-20 micron near-infrared photometry of the active regions along with 6 arcsec resolution 10 micron and 20 micron maps of the central nebula. Inquiry is made into the nature of each source and into the process of star formation for the complex as a whole.
