Lattice QCD study of π Σ − K ¯ N scattering and the Λ ( 1405 ) resonance

A lattice QCD computation of the coupled channel π Σ – K ¯ N scattering amplitudes in the Λ ( 1405 ) region is detailed. Results are obtained using a single ensemble of gauge field configurations with N f = 2 + 1 dynamical quark flavors and m π ≈ 200 MeV and m K ≈ 487 MeV . Hermitian correlation matrices using both single baryon and meson-baryon interpolating operators for a variety of different total momenta and irreducible representations are used. Several parametrizations of the two-channel scattering K -matrix are utilized to obtain the scattering amplitudes from the finite-volume spectrum. The amplitudes, continued to the complex energy plane, exhibit a virtual bound state below the π Σ threshold and a resonance pole just below the K ¯ N threshold. Evidence for $CP$ violation and measurement of $CP$-violating parameters in B$^0_\mathrm{s}$ $\to$ J/$\psi\,\phi$(1020) decays in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A pioneering machine-learning-based flavor-tagging algorithm combining same-side and opposite-side tagging is used to obtain the equivalent of 27$\,$000 tagged B$^0_\mathrm{s}$$\to$ J/$\psi\, \phi$(1020) decays from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.5 fb$^{-1}$. A time- and flavor-dependent angular analysis of the $\mu^+\mu^-$K$^+$K$^-$ final state is used to measure parameters of the $\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s}$-$\overline{\mathrm{B}}^0_\mathrm{s}$ system. The weak phase is measured to be $\phi_\mathrm{s}$ = $-$73 $\pm$ 23 (stat) $\pm$ 7 (syst) mrad, which, combined with a $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV CMS result, gives $\phi_\mathrm{s}$ = $-$74 $\pm$ 23 mrad. This value differs from zero by 3.2 standard deviations, providing evidence for $CP$ violation in B$^0_\mathrm{s}$$\to$ J/$\psi\,\phi$(1020) decays. All measured physics parameters are found to agree with standard model predictions where available.

Impact of the Earth’s Density Profile on Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations

As atmospheric neutrinos traverse the Earth, the matter potential influences their oscillation probabilities in intricate ways, enhancing and suppressing the conversion of one neutrino’s flavor to another along the propagation. Comprehending their behavior within Earth’s complex density profile, primarily described by the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) [1], is essential for accurately describing oscillations and determining expected atmospheric neutrino event rates in the DUNE Far Detector. In this study, we address this challenge by considering an ensemble of Earth models constrained by astronomical measurements of the planet’s mass and moment of inertia. We evaluate how variations in densities and layer boundaries can affect oscillation probabilities and event rates, and what implications this could have on various physics analyses.

Mechanical structure of the nucleon and the baryon octet: twist-2 case

We investigate the gravitational form factors (GFFs) of the nucleon and the baryon octet, decomposed into their flavor components, utilizing a pion mean-field approach grounded in the large N c limit of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Our focus is on the contributions from the twist-2 operators to the flavor-triplet and octet GFFs, and we decompose the mass, angular momentum, and D-term form factors of the nucleon into their respective flavors. The strange quark contributions are found to be relatively mild for the mass and angular momentum form factors, while providing significant corrections to the D-term form factor. In the course of examining the flavor decomposition of the GFFs, we uncover that the effects of twist-4 operators play a crucial role. While the gluonic contributions are suppressed by the packing fraction of the instanton vacuum in the twist-2 case, contributions from twist-4 operators are of order unity, necessitating its explicit consideration.

Target normal single-spin asymmetry in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering with two-photon exchange: Analysis using 1/$N_c$ expansion

We calculate the target normal single-spin asymmetry caused by two-photon exchange in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering in the resonance region. Our analysis uses the 1/$N_c$ expansion of low-energy QCD and combines $\textit{N}$ and Δ intermediate and final states using the contracted $\textit{SU}$(4) spin-flavor symmetry. The normal spin asymmetry obtained in leading-order accuracy in 1/$N_c$ has magnitude ~10 -2 and different sign in $\textit{ep}$ and $\textit{en}$ scattering. It can be measured in electron scattering at lab energies ~0.5-1.5 GeV and provides a clean probe of two-photon exchange dynamics.

Dirac fast scramblers

In this work, we introduce a family of Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models with a large number of fermion and boson flavors as higher dimensional generalizations of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The models may be derived from local lattice couplings and give rise to Lorentz invariant critical solutions in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. These solutions imply anomalous dimensions of both bosons and fermions tuned by the number ratio of boson to fermion flavors. In 1+1 dimension the solution represents a stable critical phase, while in 2+1 dimension it governs a quantum phase transition. We compute the out of time order correlators in the 1+1 dimensional model, showing that it exhibits growth with the maximal Lyapunov exponent λ L =2πT in the low temperature limit.

Self-interacting neutrinos: Solution to Hubble tension versus experimental constraints

Exotic self-interactions among the Standard-Model neutrinos have been proposed as a potential reason behind the tension in the expansion rate, H 0 , of the universe inferred from different observations. We constrain this proposal using electroweak precision observables, rare meson decays, and neutrinoless double-β decay. In contrast to previous works, we emphasize the importance of carrying out this study in a framework with full Standard-Model gauge invariance. We implement this first by working with a relevant set of Standard- Model-Effective-Field-Theory operators and subsequently by considering a UV completion in the inverse See-Saw model. We find that the scenario in which all flavors of neutrinos self-interact universally is strongly constrained, disfavoring a potential solution to the H 0 problem in this case. The scenario with self-interactions only among tau neutrinos is the least constrained and can potentially be consistent with a solution to the H 0 problem.

Graph reinforcement learning for exploring model spaces beyond the standard model

We present a methodology for performing scans of beyond the standard model (BSM) parameter spaces with reinforcement learning. We identify a novel procedure using graph neural networks that is capable of exploring spaces of models without the user specifying a fixed particle content, allowing broad classes of BSM models to be explored—in theory, the technique is applicable to nearly any model space with a prespecified gauge group. We provide a generic procedure by which a suitable graph grammar can be developed for any BSM model that features user-specified symmetry groups and a finite number of different possible particle species, the use of which is applicable to a variety of machine learning tasks over the actions of BSM theories beyond our particular reinforcement learning use case. As a proof of concept, we construct the graph grammar for theories with vectorlike leptons that may or may not be charged under a dark U ( 1 ) group, inspired by portal matter extensions of the sub-GeV vector portal/kinetic mixing simplified dark matter models. We then use this graph grammar to create a reinforcement learning environment tasked with creating models with these vectorlike leptons that are consistent with a list of a variety of precision observables. The reinforcement learning agent succeeds in developing models that can address the observed muon anomalous magnetic moment discrepancy while remaining consistent with flavor violation and electroweak precision observables, including both constructions that have previously been studied as well as new models that have not, to our knowledge, previously been identified. By inspecting the resulting ensembles of models that the agent produces and experimenting with different configurations for our reinforcement learning environment and graph grammar, we also infer various lessons about the development of these environments that can be transferable to reinforcement learning scans of more complicated model spaces and comment on future directions for the development of this technique into a more mature tool. The Palomar Transient Factory Core-collapse Supernova Host-galaxy Sample. I. Host-galaxy Distribution Functions and Environment Dependence of Core-collapse Supernovae

Several thousand core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) of different flavors have been discovered so far. However, identifying their progenitors has remained an outstanding open question in astrophysics. Studies of SN host galaxies have proven to be powerful in providing constraints on the progenitor populations. In this paper, we present all CCSNe detected between 2009 and 2017 by the Palomar Transient Factory. This sample includes 888 SNe of 12 distinct classes out to redshift z ≈ 1. We present the photometric properties of their host galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to the mid-infrared and model the host-galaxy spectral energy distributions to derive physical properties. The galaxy mass function of Type Ic, Ib, IIb, II, and IIn SNe ranges from 105 to 1011.5 M o˙, probing the entire mass range of star-forming galaxies down to the least-massive star-forming galaxies known. Moreover, the galaxy mass distributions are consistent with models of star-formation-weighted mass functions. Regular CCSNe are hence direct tracers of star formation. Small but notable differences exist between some of the SN classes. Type Ib/c SNe prefer galaxies with slightly higher masses (i.e., higher metallicities) and star formation rates than Type IIb and II SNe. These differences are less pronounced than previously thought. H-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and SNe Ic-BL are scarce in galaxies above 1010 M o˙. Their progenitors require environments with metallicities of < 0.4 and < 1 solar, respectively. In addition, the hosts of H-poor SLSNe are dominated by a younger stellar population than all other classes of CCSNe. Our findings corroborate the notion that low metallicity and young age play an important role in the formation of SLSN progenitors.

Helicity at small x: oscillations generated by bringing back the quarks

We construct a numerical solution of the recently-derived large-N c &N f small-x helicity evolution equations with the aim to establish the small-x asymptotics of the quark helicity distribution beyond the large-N c limit explored previously in the same framework. (Here N c and N f are the numbers of quark colors and flavors.) While the large-N c helicity evolution involves gluons only, the large-N c &N f evolution includes contributions from quarks as well. We find that adding quarks to the evolution makes quark helicity distribution oscillate as a function of x. Our numerical results in the large-N c &N f limit lead to the x-dependence of the flavor-singlet quark helicity distribution which is well-approximated by $$ {\left.\Delta \Sigma \left(x,{Q}^2\right)\right|}_{\mathrm{large}\hbox{-} {N}_c\&{N}_f}\sim {\left(\frac{1}{x}\right)}^{\alpha_h^q}\cos \left[{\omega}_q\ln \left(\frac{1}{x}\right)+{\varphi}_q\right]. $$. The power $α^{q}_{h}$ exhibits a weak N f -dependence, and, for all Nf values considered, remains very close to $α^{q}_{h}$(N f =0)=$\left(4/\sqrt{3}\right)\sqrt{\alpha_s{N}_c/\left(2\pi \right)}$ obtained earlier in the large-N c limit. The novel oscillation frequency ω q and phase shift φ q depend more strongly on the number of flavors N f (with ω q = 0 in the pure-glue large-N c limit). The typical period of oscillations for ΔΣ is rather long, spanning many units of rapidity. We speculate whether the oscillations we find are related to the sign variation with x seen in the strange quark helicity distribution extracted from the data.

Scalable qubit representations of neutrino mixing matrices

Oscillating neutrino beams exhibit quantum coherence over distances of thousands of kilometers. Their unambiguously quantum nature suggests an appealing test system for direct quantum simulation. Such techniques may enable presently analytically intractable calculations involving multi-neutrino entanglements, such as collective neutrino oscillations in supernovae, but only once oscillation phenomenology is properly re-expressed in the language of quantum circuits. Here we resolve outstanding conceptual issues regarding encoding of arbitrarily mixed neutrino flavor states in the Hilbert space of an n-qubit quantum computer. We introduce algorithms to encode mixing and oscillation of any number of flavor-mixed neutrinos, both with and without CP-violation, with an efficient number of prescriptive input parameters in terms of sub-rotations of the PMNS matrix in standard form. As a result, examples encoded for an IBM-Q quantum computer are shown to converge to analytic predictions both with and without CP-violation.

Mass gaps of a Z 3 gauge theory with three fermion flavors in 1 + 1 dimensions

We consider a Z 3 gauge theory coupled to three degenerate massive flavors of fermions, which we term Quantum Z(3) Dynamics, QZD. The spectrum can be computed in 1 + 1 dimensions using tensor networks. In weak coupling the spectrum is that of the expected mesons and baryons, although the corrections in weak coupling are nontrivial, analogous to those of nonrelativistic QED in 1 + 1 dimensions. In strong coupling, besides the usual baryon, the singlet meson is a baryon-antibaryon state. For two special values of the coupling constant, the lightest baryon is degenerate with the lightest octet meson, and the lightest singlet meson, respectively. Reconstruction of neutral-triggered charged recoil jets in √ s = 200 GeV p+p collisions at the STAR experiment

Jets — collimated sprays of hadrons — are produced by hard-scattered partons during the early stages of heavy ion collisions. Hence, they provide a valuable probe of the complex multi-particle dynamics within the hot, dense medium produced in such collisions. In particular, the study of jets recoiling from direct photons (γ dir +jet) and those recoiling from energetic π 0 (π 0 +jet) may shed light on the path-length and initial flavor (quark vs. gluon) dependence of the energy-loss experienced by a parton as it traverses the medium. We present here measurements of the yields of charged recoil jets tagged by γ dir and π 0 in p+p collisions at √S = 200 GeV. These measurements will serve as a vacuum fragmentation reference for an upcoming measurement in Au + Au collisions.

Wave functions of multiquark hadrons from representations of the symmetry groups S n

Construction of the wave functions of multiquark hadrons by a traditional method based on the tensor products of colors, flavors, spins (and orbital) parts becomes quite complex when quark numbers grow n = 5 , 6 … 12 , as it gets difficult to satisfy the requirements of Fermi statistics. Our novel approach is focused directly on representations of the permutation symmetry generators. After showing how C 3 is manifested in the wave functions of (excited) baryons, we use it to construct the wave functions for a set of pentaquarks and hexaquarks ( n = 5 , 6 ). We also have some partial results for larger systems, with n = 9 and 12, and even beyond that as far as n = 24 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Infrared fixed point in the massless twelve-flavor SU(3) gauge-fermion system

We present strong numerical evidence for the existence of an infrared fixed point in the renormalization group flow of the SU(3) gauge-fermion system with twelve massless fermions in the fundamental representation. Our numerical simulations using nHYP-smeared staggered fermions with Pauli-Villars improvement do not exhibit any first-order bulk phase transition in the investigated parameter region. We utilize an infinite volume renormalization scheme based on the gradient flow transformation to determine the renormalization group β function. The gradient flow β function exhibits a zero at g GF ⋆ 2 = 6.60 ( 62 ) , implying that the system is infrared conformal. We calculate the leading irrelevant critical exponent γ g ⋆ = 0.199 ( 32 ) . Our prediction for γ g ⋆ is consistent with available literature at the 1 − 2 σ level. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Anisotropic magnetic excitations of a frustrated bilinear-biquadratic spin model: Implications for spin waves of detwinned iron pnictides

Elucidating the nature of spin excitations is important to understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. Motivated by recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the nearly 100% detwinned BaFe 2 As 2 , we study the spin dynamics of an $\textit{S}$ = 1 frustrated bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the antiferromagnetic phase with wave vector (π, 0). The biquadratic interactions are treated in a dynamical way using a flavor-wave theory in an $\textit{SU}$(3) representation. Besides the dipolar spin wave (magnon) excitations, the biquadratic interactions give rise to quadrupolar excitations at high energies. In this work, we find that the quadrupolar wave significantly influences, in an energy dependent way, the anisotropy between the spin excitation spectra along the (π, 0) and (0, π) directions in the wave vector space. Our theoretical results capture the essential behavior of the spin dynamics measured in the antiferromagnetic phase of the detwinned BaFe 2 As 2 . More generally, our results underscore the importance of electron correlation effects for the microscopic physics of the iron pnictides.

Gauge-invariant renormalization of four-quark operators

We study the renormalization of four-quark operators in one-loop perturbation theory. We employ a coordinate-space gauge-invariant renormalization scheme (GIRS), which can be advantageous compared to other schemes, especially in nonperturbative lattice investigations. From our perturbative calculations, we extract the conversion factors between GIRS and the modified minimal subtraction scheme ( MS ¯ ) at the next-to-leading order. As a by-product, we also obtain the relevant anomalous dimensions in the GIRS scheme. A formidable issue in the study of the four-quark operators is that operators with different Dirac matrices mix among themselves upon renormalization. We focus on both parity-conserving and parity-violating four-quark operators, which change flavor numbers by two units ( Δ F = 2 ). The extraction of the conversion factors entails the calculation of two-point Green’s functions involving products of two four-quark operators, as well as three-point Green’s functions with one four-quark and two bilinear operators. The significance of our results lies in their potential to refine our understanding of QCD phenomena, offering insights into the precision of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and shedding light on the nonperturbative treatment of complex mixing patterns associated with four-quark operators. Gravitational wave signatures from discrete flavor symmetries

Non-Abelian discrete symmetries have been widely used to explain the patterns of lepton masses and flavor mixing. In these models, a given symmetry is assumed at a high scale and then is spontaneously broken by scalars (the flavons), which acquire vacuum expectation values. Typically, the resulting leading order predictions for the oscillation parameters require corrections in order to comply with neutrino oscillation data. Here, we introduce such corrections through an explicit small breaking of the symmetry. This has the advantage of solving the cosmological problems of these models without resorting to inflation. The explicit breaking induces an energy difference or "bias" between different vacua and drives the evolution of the domain walls, unavoidably produced after the symmetry breaking, towards their annihilation. Importantly, the wall annihilation leads to gravitational waves which may be observed in current and/or future experiments. We show that a distinctive pattern of gravitational waves with multiple overlapped peaks is generated when walls annihilate, which is within the reach of future detectors. We also show that cosmic walls from discrete flavor symmetries can be cosmologically safe for any spontaneous breaking scale between 1 and 10 18 GeV, if the bias is chosen adequately, without the need to inflate the walls away. We use as an example a particular A 4 model in which an explicit breaking is included in right-handed neutrino mass terms.
