Microscopic ergodicity breaking governs the emergence and evolution of elasticity in glass-forming nanoclay suspensions
We report a study combining x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) with in situ rheology to investigate the microscopic dynamics and mechanical properties of aqueous suspensions of the synthetic hectorite clay Laponite, which is composed of charged, nanometer-scale, disk-shaped particles. The suspensions, with particle concentrations ranging from 3.25 to 3.75 wt%, evolve over time from a fluid to a soft glass that displays aging behavior. The XPCS measurements characterize the localization of the particles during the formation and aging of the soft-glass state. The fraction of localized particles f 0 increases rapidly during the early formation stage and grows more slowly during subsequent aging, while the characteristic localization length r loc steadily de- creases. Despite the strongly varying rates of aging at different concentrations, both f 0 and r loc scale with the elastic shear modulus G' in a manner independent of concentration. During the later aging stage, the scaling between r loc and G' agrees quantitatively with a prediction of naive mode coupling theory. Breakdown of agreement with the theory during the early formation stage indi- cates the prevalence of dynamic heterogeneity, suggesting the soft solid forms through precursors of dynamically localized clusters.
Dynamics of genetic code evolution: The emergence of universality
We study the dynamics of genetic code evolution. The model of Vetsigian et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 103, 10696 (2006)] and Vetsigian [Collective evolution of biological and physical systems, Ph.D. thesis, 2005] uses the mechanism of horizontal gene transfer to demonstrate convergence of the genetic code to a near universal solution. We reproduce and analyze the algorithm as a dynamical system. All the parameters used in the model are varied to assess their impact on convergence and optimality score. We show that by allowing specific parameters to vary with time, the solution exhibits attractor dynamics. Finally, we study automorphisms of the genetic code arising due to this model. We use this to examine the scaling of the solutions to re-examine universality and find that there is a direct link to mutation rate.

Emergence of a Pseudogap in the BCS-BEC Crossover
Strongly correlated Fermi systems with pairing interactions become superfluid below a critical temperature $T_c$. The extent to which such pairing correlations alter the behavior of the liquid at temperatures $T > T_c$ is a subtle issue that remains an area of debate, in particular regarding the appearance of the so-called pseudogap in the BCS-BEC crossover of unpolarized spin-1/2 nonrelativistic matter. To shed light on this, in this work we extract several quantities of crucial importance at and around the unitary limit, namely, the odd-even staggering of the total energy, the spin susceptibility, the pairing correlation function, the condensate fraction, and the critical temperature $T_c$, using a nonperturbative, constrained-ensemble quantum Monte Carlo algorithm.
Superdiffusion from Emergent Classical Solitons in Quantum Spin Chains
Finite-temperature spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain is known to be superdiffusive, and has been conjectured to lie in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Using a kinetic theory of transport, we compute the KPZ coupling strength for the Heisenberg chain as a function of temperature, directly from microscopics; the results agree well with density-matrix renormalization group simulations. Here, we establish a rigorous quantum-classical correspondence between the “giant quasiparticles” that govern superdiffusion and solitons in the classical continuous Landau-Lifshitz ferromagnet. We conclude that KPZ universality has the same origin in classical and quantum integrable isotropic magnets: a finite-temperature gas of low-energy classical solitons.
Emergent Ergodicity at the Transition between Many-Body Localized Phases
Strongly disordered systems in the many-body localized (MBL) phase can exhibit ground state order in highly excited eigenstates. The interplay between localization, symmetry, and topology has led to the characterization of a broad landscape of MBL phases ranging from spin glasses and time crystals to symmetry protected topological phases. Understanding the nature of phase transitions between these different forms of eigenstate order remains an essential open question. In this work, we conjecture that no direct transition between distinct MBL orders can occur in one dimension; rather, an ergodic phase always intervenes. Motivated by recent advances in Rydberg-atom-based quantum simulation, we propose an experimental protocol where the intervening ergodic phase can be diagnosed via the dynamics of local observables.

Emergence of a Spin Microemulsion in Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates
We report the first numerical prediction of a “spin microemulsion”—a phase with undulating spin domains resembling classical bicontinuous oil-water-surfactant emulsions—in two-dimensional systems of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using field-theoretic numerical simulations, we investigated the melting of a low-temperature stripe phase with supersolid character and find that the stripes lose their superfluidity at elevated temperature and undergo a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transition into a spin microemulsion. Momentum distribution calculations highlight a thermally broadened occupation of the Rashba circle of low-energy states with macroscopic and isotropic occupation around the ring. Here, we provide a finite-temperature phase diagram that positions the emulsion as an intermediate, structured isotropic phase with residual quantum character before transitioning at higher temperature into a structureless normal fluid.

Emergence of String Monodromy in Effective Field Theory
We demonstrate that when the field theory Kleiss-Kuijf and Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations are imposed on one color ordering of general local bi-adjoint scalar effective field theories, the string monodromy relations must be obeyed by the other color ordering. This is a surprising example of an open string world-sheet property appearing in a purely field theoretic context. As part of the derivation, we show that nonlinear relations among the four-point Wilson coefficients arise from imposing linear symmetries on the six-point amplitude via factorization. Emergent Canonical Spin Tensor in the Chiral-Symmetric Hot QCD
The spin tensor is fundamental to relativistic spin hydrodynamics, but its definition is ambiguous due to the pseudogauge symmetry. We show that this ambiguity can be solved in interacting field theories. We prove that the mean-field limit of a modified Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with spin-spin interactions is equivalent to nondissipative spin hydrodynamics with a canonical spin tensor.
