Final Report for Tech-X Corporations’s contribution to Enhancing Understanding of High Energy Density Plasmas from Wire Array and Solid Liner Implosions Using Fluid Modeling with Kinetic Closures

Recent results from experiments and simulation of magnetically driven pulsed power liners have explored the role of the early-time electrothermal instability in the evolution of the magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Our focus will be on understanding the development of such instabilities and the potential stabilization mechanisms via electron thermal conduction, viscosity, and large magnetic fields which we expect could play a significant role in supporting the success of the MagLIF program. Experiments have shown that studies of high-energy density plasmas from wire-array implosions require physics modeling that goes well beyond simple models such as ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The goal of this work is to provide increased understanding of these experiments by employing simulations with a multi-fluid extended-MHD model which uses kinetic closures for thermal conduction, resistivity and viscosity. We will use codes easily available to the wider research community, including university students, with a secondary goal of providing the community with well-benchmarked tools capable of advanced modeling of high-energy-density plasmas.

Microstructure-Based Modeling of Inner Oxygen Pressure in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

One major degradation mechanism during long-term operation of solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) is delamination of oxygen electrodes (OEs). The driving force for the electrode delamination could be the generated high inner oxygen pressure near the electrode-electrolyte interface during operation. However, the effects of transport properties and electrode thickness on the inner oxygen partial pressure are not well understood. Here, a microstructure-based electrochemical model which includes the conduction of electrons and oxygen ions coupled with Butler-Volmer-type chemical reactions at triple-phase-boundaries (TPBs), is employed to investigate the oxygen pressure in lanthanum strontium manganate (LSM)-based SOECs. The model is applied to both two-dimensional (2D) prototype microstructures and three-dimensional (3D) realistic microstructures, and the oxygen pressure is analyzed as a function of transport properties and electrode thickness under both potentiostatic and galvanostatic operations. The simulation results suggest strategies to suppress electrode delamination. The simulation results are compared to an analytical solution, and the discrepancies are attributed to the Butler-Volmer-type kinetics included in the microstructure-based model.

New Engineering Concepts to High Energy Density Li-S Batteries

Li-S batteries (LSBs) with energy densities > 500 Wh/kg @ C/5 and >1000 cycles, cycle life operating over wide temperatures has been identified to be critical for meeting the global energy demands. Progress is however, very much limited due to several major hurdles related to the following: (a) poor Li' reaction kinetics (conductivity/diffusivity) enabling full reversible S conversion to Li2S, (b) inferior electron (e) conductivity, specific capacity and cycle life due to electrolyte soluble species of polysulfides (PSs) formed with the reaction of Li ions with sulfur migrating to anode, (c) unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and finally, (d) dendrites that are formed on the Li metal anode severely limiting the cycle life due to polarization at the solid/liquid interfaces causing safety, inferior capacity, energy density, rate, and cycle life issues. Creation of a fully functional economical ≤$80/kWh, high energy density LSBs is vital for enabling its widespread commercial deployment and use in current and next generation electric vehicles.

The Dopamine Assisted Synthesis of MoO3/Carbon Electrodes With Enhanced Capacitance in Aqueous Electrolyte

A capacitance increase phenomenon is observed for MoO 3 electrodes synthesized via a sol-gel process in the presence of dopamine hydrochloride (Dopa HCl) as compared to α-MoO 3 electrodes in 5M ZnCl 2 aqueous electrolyte. The synthesis approach is based on a hydrogen peroxide-initiated sol-gel reaction to which the Dopa HCl is added. The powder precursor (Dopa) x MoO y , is isolated from the metastable gel using freeze-drying. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) of the precursor results in the formation of MoO 3 accompanied by carbonization of the organic molecules; designated as HT-MoO 3 /C. HT of the precipitate formed in the absence of dopamine in the reaction produced α-MoO 3 , which was used as a reference material in this study (α-MoO 3 -ref). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show a nanobelt morphology for both HT-MoO 3 /C and α-MoO 3 -ref powders, but with distinct differences in the shape of the nanobelts. The presence of carbonaceous content in the structure of HT-MoO 3 /C is confirmed by FTIR and Raman spectroscopy measurements. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement analysis demonstrate the presence of α-MoO 3 and h-MoO 3 phases in the structure of HT-MoO 3 /C. The increased specific capacitance delivered by the HT-MoO 3 /C electrode as compared to the α-MoO 3 -ref electrode in 5M ZnCl 2 electrolyte in a −0.25–0.70 V vs. Ag/AgCl potential window triggered a more detailed study in an expanded potential window. In the 5M ZnCl 2 electrolyte at a scan rate of 2 mV s −1 , the HT-MoO 3 /C electrode shows a second cycle capacitance of 347.6 F g −1 . The higher electrochemical performance of the HT-MoO 3 /C electrode can be attributed to the presence of carbon in its structure, which can facilitate electron transport. Our study provides a new route for further development of metal oxides for energy storage applications.

Advanced Geomechanical Model to Predict the Impact of CO2-Induced Microstructural Alterations on the Cohesive-Frictional Behavior of Mt. Simon Sandstone

We investigated the influence of CO2-induced geochemical reactions on the cohesive-frictional properties of host rock within the context of CO2 storage in a saline aquifer and focused on the Mt. Simon sandstone. The research objective was to model geo-mechanical changes due to host rock exposure to CO2-saturated brine while accounting for heterogeneity, double-scale porosity, and granular structure. We formulated a three-level multi-scale model for host rocks. We conducted scanning electron microscopy analyses to probe the microstructure and grid nanoindentation to measure the mechanical response. We derived new nonlinear strength upscaling solutions to correlate the effective strength characteristics and the macroscopic yield surface to the micro-structure at the nano-, micro-, and meso-scales. Specifically, our theoretical model links CO2-induced microstructural alterations to a reduction in the size of the yield surface, and a drop in the value of the friction coefficient. In turn, regarding the Illinois Basin Decatur Project, the CO2-induced drop in friction coefficient is linked to an increase in the risk of fault slip and a higher probability of induced microseismicity during and after the end of CO2 underground injection operations. The theoretical model presented is essential for the geo-mechanical modeling of CO2 underground injection operations at multiple length-scales.

Propagation of hydromagnetic waves in the upper F2-region

The theory of hydromagnetic-wave in the upper F2-region, in which electrons are in a transitional regime from collisional to collisionless conditions and ions are in a collisionless state, is examined. Derivation of the governing equations is based on the fact that the isotropic electrons are fluid-like, and the anisotropic ions follow kinetic equations modified by ion-electron collisions. Magneto-acoustic waves of a period of from about 0.2 to 10 sec are dissipated by ion Landau damping and electron thermal conduction and viscosity. Numerical solutions under ionospheric conditions show that the dissipation of hydromagnetic waves is insufficient to modify the large scale heating of the ionosphere.

Coulomb collisions of ring current particles: Indirect source of heat for the ionosphere

The additional energy requirements of the topside ionosphere during a magnetic storm are less than one quarter of the ring current energy. This energy is supplied largely by Coulomb collisions of ring current protons of energy less than about 20 keV with background thermal electrons which conduct the heat to the ionosphere. Past criticisms are discussed of this mechanism for the supply of energy to the SAR-arc and neighboring regions of the ionosphere.

Semiconductor electrolyte photovoltaic energy converter

Feasibility and practicality of a solar cell consisting of a semiconductor surface in contact with an electrolyte are evaluated. Basic components and processes are detailed for photovoltaic energy conversion at the surface of an n-type semiconductor in contact with an electrolyte which is oxidizing to conduction band electrons. Characteristics of single crystal CdS, GaAs, CdSe, CdTe and thin film CdS in contact with aqueous and methanol based electrolytes are studied and open circuit voltages are measured from Mott-Schottky plots and open circuit photo voltages. Quantum efficiencies for short circuit photo currents of a CdS crystal and a 20 micrometer film are shown together with electrical and photovoltaic properties. Highest photon irradiances are observed with the GaAs cell.
