An investigation of coronal active region loop structures using AS&E rocket X-ray images

Simultaneous high spatial resolution observations at 6 cm in soft X-rays, in photospheric magnetograms, and in optical filtergrams were used to compare the most intense sources of centimetric emission in two active regions to coronal loops, sunspots, chromospheric structures, and photospheric magnetic fields. Results show that the majority of the bright microwave components are not associated with sunspots or X-ray emission. A nonthermal mechanism appears necessary to explain the brightest microwave components, discrete regions of continuous particle acceleration may be common in active regions. Studies of the plasma parameters of selected loops imply that the radio emission is consistent with gyro-resonance absorption at the third and fourth harmonic, at least from part of each loop. Results are presented for: (1) X-ray and microwave observations of active regions; (2) comparison of coronal holes observed in soft X-rays and Hel 10830 A spectrosheliograms; and (3) the reappearance of polar coronal holes and the evolution of the solar magnetic field.

Data analysis and theoretical studies for atmospheric Explorer C, D and E

The research concentrated on construction of a comprehensive model of the chemistry of the ionosphere. It proceeded by comparing detailed predictions of the atmospheric parameters observed by the instrumentation on board the Atmospheric Explorer Satellites with the measured values and modifying the chemistry to bring about consistency. Full account was taken of laboratory measurements of the processes identified as important. The research programs were made available to the AE team members. Regularly updated tables of recommended values of photoionization cross sections and electron impact excitation and ionization cross sections were provided. The research did indeed lead to a chemistry model in which the main pathways are quantitatively secure. The accuracy was sufficient that remaining differences are small.

Analysis and calculation of macrosegregation in a casting ingot, exhibits C and E

A computer model which describes the solidification of a binary metal alloy in an insulated rectangular mold with a temperature gradient is presented. A numerical technique, applicable to a broad class of moving boundary problems, was implemented therein. The solidification model described is used to calculate the macrosegregation within the solidified casting by coupling the equations for liquid flow in the solid/liquid or mushy zone with the energy equation for heat flow throughout the ingot and thermal convection in the bulk liquid portion. The rate of development of the solid can be automatically calculated by the model. Numerical analysis of such solidification parameters as enthalpy and boundary layer flow is displayed. On-line user interface and software documentation are presented.

Acoustic measurements of a full-scale rotor with four tip shapes. Volume 2: Appendices C, D, E and F

A full scale helicopter with four different blade tip geometries is tested in a 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel. Performance, loads, and noise are measured. The four tip shapes tested were rectangular, tapered, swept, and swept/tapered. The noise data include measurements of the sound pressure levels in decibels dB, decibels adjusted dBA, and tone-corrected PNdB, for all of the conditions tested. Also included are the detailed measurements, 1/3 octave spectra and time histories for some selected data, and plots of dBA as function of test condition. Some performance measurements are included to aid interpretation of the noise data.

Section 1. Method of determining mode shapes and natural frequencies of the NASA unmodified test structure. Section 2. Continuous beam closed from solution to the NASA-LSS astromast torsional vibration, appendix E

The methods used to determine the lower natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes of the NASA-LSS Astromast (Unmodified Test Structure), and the mass integrals associated with the mode shapes are illustrated. The test structure is modeled as a cantilever beam with 91 lumped masses and without the tip mass on the free end of the bram. This uncouples the torsion and bending modes and allows for them to be determined separately. The frequency range was limited to an upper bound of 100 rad/sec (15.92 Hz.). In this range from 0.-100. rad/sec, three bending frequencies and one torsion frequency was found.

Variability in the high energy gamma ray emission from Cyg X-3 over a two-year period (1983 - 1984) at E 4 x 10(11) eV

Cygnus X-3 is observed to emit gamma rays with energies in excess of 4 x 10 to the 11th power eV during two out of 9 observational categories over an 18 month time span. The emissions are observed at the 0.6 phase of the characteristic 4.8 hr light curve for this binary system. We estimate a peak flux at phase 0.6 of 5 x 10 to the minus 10th power photons cm-2s-1 at a software threshold of 8 x 10 to the 11th power eV for Oct/Nov 1983. A flux for the June 84 effect cannot be reliably calculated at present due to lack of Monte Carlo simulations for the energy range and spectral region. For the other 7 observational categories the observations are consistent with zero source emission. The light curve would appear to be variable on a time scale of a couple of weeks at these categories. Selection of compact images in accordance with Monte Carlo simulations combined with empirical optimization techniques have led to an enriched gamma ray light curve for the Oct/Nov 1983 data. Selection on the basis of shower orientation, however, has not led to any notable enhancement of the gamma ray content. Individual Cherenko images can be reliably sorted on an event by event basis into either proton-induced or photon-induced showers.

Experimental results on gamma-ray sources at E sub 0 = 10(13) - 10(14) eV

The detection of very high energy gamma ray sources has been reported in the last few years by means of extensive air shower observations. The Plateau Rosa array for the registration of the arrival directions of extensive air showers has been operating since 1980 and first results on Cygnus X-3 have been reported. Here, the status of observations of Cygnus X-3 and of the Crab Pulsar are reported.

Observations of E and F region Mg(+) from Spacelab 1

Images of airglow at 2800 A were taken on the Spacelab 1 Shuttle mission and have been interpreted to be solar resonant emission of magnesium ions. On two orbital passes, observations were made near the magnetic equator while observing in the 2800-A channel. The observations were made near the sunset terminator (approximately 1800 LT), in winter (1983, day 335). Three separate emission clouds were observed, all of which extended well into the F region. The location of the clouds in horizontal space is shown. The processed images have been pseudocolored to highlight the intensity distribution in the clouds. Observations included clouds with apparent magnetic-field aligned striations. Bright emissions were observed at the magnetic equator, at 12-deg north magnetic latitude, and at 12-deg south magnentic latitude. Cloud-center brightnesses varied between 680 rayleighs and 1700 rayleighs.

Results of the May 1982 ATMAP Campaign at the Meteor Wind Station Kuehlungsborn (54 Deg N, 12 Deg E), GDR

A sinusoisal least squares fit over the entire data of 1 to 6 May 1982 was computed. The results are shown. Wind results refere to an average height of 95 km (no height determination). The wind results correspond, in general, to the average behavior of early May. The zonal prevailing west wind, however, is stronger than the term mean value (-5 m/s). Also, the amplitude of the semidiurnal idal wind is larger (mean value 1977 to 1983: 8 m/s).

Remarks on the ATMAP Campaigns in November 1981 and May 1982 at Collm (52 Deg N, 15 Deg E)

The results given are based on daily nighttime L. F. wind measurements over Central Europe on three measuring paths at 179, 227, and 272 kHz. Absolute reflection height measurements were carried out for the first time in August 1982 so that values of the months of 1982 and 1983 have been taken for the campaigns in November 1981 and May 1982. The prevailing wind and the semidiurnal tidal wind components are calculated daily. Means of the month or means of parts of a month are formed for climatological investigations. A 24 hour analysis is not possible due to the very different reflection heights during the daytime and nighttime, even with measurements being carried out the whole ay long in the winter season. The critical examination of the choice of the measuring intervals selected is dependent on the visual angle. A wind ield change is observed over Central Europe very often around the 20th of November 1981 this wind field variation being in the core period and leading over to a more stable tidal wind.
