A Convolutional Neural Network Model for Battery Capacity Fade Curve Prediction using Early Life Data

Herein, early prediction of battery performance degradation trends can facilitate research of new materials and cell designs, rapid deployment of batteries in real-world applications, timely replacement of batteries in critical applications, and even the secondary use market. In this study, we design a convolutional neural network model to predict the entire battery capacity fade curve - a critical indicator of battery performance degradation - using first 100 cycles of data (~ three weeks of testing). We use the discharge voltage-capacity curves as input to the model and automate the feature extraction process through the convolutional layers of the network. Our approach can predict the per cycle capacity fade rate and rollover cycle (knee point) in the capacity fade curve, which indicate the onset of rapid capacity decay. On the publicly available graphite/LiFePO 4 battery dataset, optimized networks predict the capacity fade curves, rollover cycle, and end of life with 3.7% (worst-case), 19%, and 17% mean absolute percentage errors, respectively.

Automated TEM Reveals Intercrystalline Correlations of Conjugated Polymers

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) continues to transform polymer science by revealing key aspects of chain packing, phase separation and nanoscale structure. The development of instrumentation and data analyses tools is driving the field forward and enabling new experiments. Here, we use automated high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) and image processing to identify the structure of a conjugated polymer used in organic electronics. Analysis of more than 600 HRTEM images reveals lattice parameters and orientation correlations between crystals, including the preferred alignment of neighboring crystals along the same crystallographic direction that is likely the result of liquid crystalline order.

Integration of theory and experiment in the modelling of heterogeneous electrocatalysis.

Theoretical modelling is essential to deepen our understanding of heterogeneous electrocatalytic energy conversion processes, such as water splitting. Here, Sharon Hammes-Schiffer and Giulia Galli offer their perspectives on the best strategies for successfully studying such systems. Heterogeneous electrocatalysis is critical to many energy conversion processes. Theoretical and computational approaches are essential to interpret experimental data and provide the mechanistic understanding necessary to design more effective catalysts. However, automated general procedures to build predictive theoretical and computational frameworks are not readily available; specific choices must be made in terms of the atomistic structural model and the level of theory, as well as the experimental data used to inform and validate these choices. Here we outline some best practices for modelling heterogeneous systems and present examples in the context of catalysis at metal electrodes and oxides. The level of theory should be chosen for the specific system and properties of interest, and experimental validation is essential from the beginning to the end of the study. Continuous feedback and ultimate integration between experiment and theory enhances the power of calculations to elucidate mechanisms, identify effective descriptors and clarify design principles.

Towards Automated/Semiautomated Extraction of Faults from Lidar Data

The Pajarito fault system is a complex zone of deformation and a seismically active region nestled within the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico. Numerous laterally discontinuous faults and associated folds and fractures interact in a manner that has important implications for seismic hazards and risk mitigation. Previous efforts have established a foundation for the location of lineaments and structures in the Pajarito fault system; however, ensuring the completeness of the current lineament mapping is required for identifying areas for field validation, evaluating the potential for future seismic activity, and better understanding fault interaction. Assistance with this fault-mapping task via automated or semiautomated techniques as applied to lidar data over a large area of interest is highly desirable. A proof-of-concept processing flow which transforms lidar point-cloud data into a raster of surficial fault candidates is described and illustrated herein. We report these initial results hold great promise toward achieving our ultimate goal.

Towards Auto-Generated Data Systems

After decades of progress, database management systems (DBMSs) are now the backbones of many data applications that we interact with on a daily basis. Yet, with the emergence of new data types and hardware, building and optimizing new data systems remain as difficult as the heyday of relational databases. In this paper, we summarize our work towards automating the building and optimization of data systems. Drawing from our own experience, we further argue that any automation technique must address three aspects: user specification, code generation, and result validation. We conclude by discussing a case study using videos data processing, along with opportunities for future research towards designing data systems that are automatically generated.

Programmed Multiphasic Health Testing

Multiphase health screening procedures are advocated for detection and prevention of disease at an early stage through risk factor analysis. The use of an automated medical history questionnaire together with scheduled physical examination data provides a scanning input for computer printout. This system makes it possible to process laboratory results from 1,000 to 2,000 patients for biochemical determinations on an economically feasible base.

Fail-over file transfer process

The present invention provides a fail-over file transfer process to handle data file transfer when the transfer is unsuccessful in order to avoid unnecessary network congestion and enhance reliability in an automated data file transfer system. If a file cannot be delivered after attempting to send the file to a receiver up to a preset number of times, and the receiver has indicated the availability of other backup receiving locations, then the file delivery is automatically attempted to one of the backup receiving locations up to the preset number of times. Failure of the file transfer to one of the backup receiving locations results in a failure notification being sent to the receiver, and the receiver may retrieve the file from the location indicated in the failure notification when ready.

Airport Runway Configuration Management with Offline Model-free Reinforcement Learning

Runway configuration management (RCM) deals with the optimal selection of runways to operate on (for arrivals and departures) based on traffic, surface wind speed, wind direction and other environmental variables. RCM is one of the most challenging tasks in air traffic management, as it relies on operational and environmental variables (e.g., weather forecast) that are highly uncertain and complex to model. In this paper, an innovative and automated approach is deployed using offline model-free reinforcement learning to provide decision-support for RCM. The proposed technology processes historical data about variables of interest, decisions made regarding RCM, and their subsequent outcome, to identify a policy that would encourage good decisions and avoid the poor ones. The policy search is guided by an appropriately chosen weighted utility function (e.g., based on minimizing delays and go-arounds). Finally, the performance of the proposed tool is validated using Charlotte Douglas International Airport as the case study, which shows that the proposed method is superior to other conventional rule-based approaches.

Investigating the Use of Machine Learning (ML) to Assess Tropospheric Doppler Radar Wind Profiler (TDRWP) Data Quality

Manual Quality Control (MQC) of Tropospheric Doppler Radar Wind Profiler (TDRWP) data is essential for defining an accurate climatology for downstream aerospace vehicle assessments. MQC traditionally takes around 30.5 hours per year of radar data. The Marshall Space Flight Center Natural Environments Branch (MSFC NE) used machine learning (ML) to test the feasibility of automating the MQC process, showing a potential to reduce labor by 300%. However, analysis of the model showed some false positives. We compared a neural network to the model to validate it and develop a process for assessing comparable solutions in the future.

Initial Results of Heuristic Guided Orbit Selection for a Low Frequency Radio Interferometric Spacecraft Constellation

A constellation of radio telescope spacecraft can leverage interferometry to accurately image distant objects throughout the universe, but mission design must balance among many interrelated constraints. In particular, the number of craft and the selection of time-varying orbital parameters play a pivotal role in determining what interferometric baselines are feasible with respect to different targets, and thus drives the breadth and quality of data available to the constellation. The large combinatorial orbit configuration space and competing concerns present a challenging problem that is not well addressed by traditional mission design processes. This paper describes application of automated optimization methods to help direct mission design effort to the most promising dynamic constellation geometries: those that achieve broad interferometric coverage but remain cost-effective and resilient to failures. Several automatic heuristic-driven optimization algorithms representing complementary search strategies were created to explore among concrete constellation configuration plans. Evaluation of each candidate constellation plan was accelerated by efficiently combining precomputed caches of orbital and interferometric data. Results indicate that leveraging automated optimization for constellation mission design is both practical and illuminating: generated solutions provided both evidence for existing design intuitions as well as fresh insights into novel configurations.

Generation and Performance of Automated Jarosite Mineral Detectors for Vis/NIR Spectrometers at Mars

Sulfate salt discoveries at the Eagle and Endurance craters in Meridiani Planum by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity have proven mineralogically the existence and involvement of water in Mars past. Visible and near infrared spectrometers like the Mars Express OMEGA, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter CRISM and the 2009 Mars Science Laboratory Rover cameras are powerful tools for the identification of water-bearing salts and other high priority minerals at Mars. The increasing spectral resolution and rover mission lifetimes represented by these missions currently necessitate data compression in order to ease downlink restrictions. On board data processing techniques can be used to guide the selection, measurement and return of scientifically important data from relevant targets, thus easing bandwidth stress and increasing scientific return. We have developed an automated support vector machine (SVM) detector operating in the visible/near-infrared (VisNIR, 300-2500 nm) spectral range trained to recognize the mineral jarosite (typically KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6), positively identified by the Mossbauer spectrometer at Meridiani Planum. Additional information is included in the original extended abstract.

Automated Planning of Science Products Based on Nadir Overflights and Alerts for Onboard and Ground Processing

A set of automated planning algorithms is the current operations baseline approach for the Intelligent Payload Module (IPM) of the proposed Hyper spectral Infrared Imager (HyspIRI) mission. For this operations concept, there are only local (e.g. non-depletable) operations constraints, such as real-time downlink and onboard memory, and the forward sweeping algorithm is optimal for determining which science products should be generated onboard and on ground based on geographical overflights, science priorities, alerts, requests, and onboard and ground processing constraints. This automated planning approach was developed for the HyspIRI IPM concept. The HyspIRI IPM is proposed to use an X-band Direct Broadcast (DB) capability that would enable data to be delivered to ground stations virtually as it is acquired. However, the HyspIRI VSWIR and TIR instruments will produce approximately 1 Gbps data, while the DB capability is 15 Mbps for a approx. =60X oversubscription. In order to address this mismatch, this innovation determines which data to downlink based on both the type of surface the spacecraft is overflying, and the onboard processing of data to detect events. For example, when the spacecraft is overflying Polar Regions, it might downlink a snow/ice product. Additionally, the onboard software will search for thermal signatures indicative of a volcanic event or wild fire and downlink summary information (extent, spectra) when detected, thereby reducing data volume. The planning system described above automatically generated the IPM mission plan based on requested products, the overflight regions, and available resources.

Multipurpose aircraft monitoring with a smart recorder

This paper describes a microprocessor-based flight recorder the 'Smart Recorder' - which was developed and installed on a King Air aircraft used for commercial charter service. The recorder is used as a research tool for developing monitoring strategies and processing algorithms to: (1) characterize the typical flight environment encountered by the host aircraft, (2) develop technology for automated engine trend monitoring, and (3) implement a crash recording capability. Initially the recorder was used as an adaptive data acquisition system, monitoring engine sensors and flight instruments and then modifying its data acquisition in response to the perceived aircraft situation. Data collected in this manner were stored in a removable bubble memory and subsequently analyzed in the laboratory. Later, on-board processing was implemented to better utilize the available storage capacity.

TPSAS-NF1676L-32581-DND

The GOES-R series satellites are collecting observations of severe storms at unprecedented detail. Nearly every day, GOES-16/17 collects ABI visible and infrared (IR) imagery of storms at 1-minute or better resolution. When paired with GLM data, these ABI “Mesoscale Domain Sector” (MDS) observations allow us to infer processes that are occurring within storm updrafts and cloud tops via wind flows, temperature, visible texture, and lightning-generated radiances that can be detected using automated algorithms. Prior to the GOES-R series, GOES-8 to -15 observations were relatively coarse which limited their utility in severe storm forecasting after a storm became mature. GOES-R MDS data provides a new opportunity to determine how satellite-derived products could contribute to our understanding and detection of severe storms. This poster highlights recent research on severe storms supported by the NASA Weather and Atmospheric Dynamics Focus Area.

Potable water recovery for spacecraft application by electrolytic pretreatment/air evaporation

A process for the recovery of potable water from urine using electrolytic pretreatment followed by distillation in a closed-cycle air evaporator has been developed and tested. Both the electrolytic pretreatment unit and the air evaporation unit are six-person, flight-concept prototype, automated units. Significantly extended wick lifetimes have been achieved in the air evaporation unit using electrolytically pretreated, as opposed to chemically pretreated, urine feed. Parametric test data are presented on product water quality, wick life, process power, maintenance requirements, and expendable requirements.

Effect of Palagonite Dust Deposition on the Automated Detection of Carbonate Vis/NIR Spectra

Currently Mars missions can collect more data than can be returned. Future rovers of increased mission lifetime will benefit from onboard autonomous data processing systems to guide the selection, measurement and return of scientifically important data. One approach is to train a neural net to recognize spectral reflectance characteristics of minerals of interest. We have developed a carbonate detector using a neural net algorithm trained on 10,000 synthetic Vis/NIR (350-2500 nm) spectra. The detector was able to correctly identify carbonates in the spectra of 30 carbonate and noncarbonate field samples with 100% success. However, Martian dust coatings strongly affect the spectral characteristics of surface rocks potentially masking the underlying substrate rock. In this experiment, we measure Vis/NIR spectra of calcite coated with different thicknesses of palagonite dust and evaluate the performance of the carbonate detector.

Support for life-cycle product reuse in NASA's SSE

The Software Support Environment (SSE) is a software factory for the production of Space Station Freedom Program operational software. The SSE is to be centrally developed and maintained and used to configure software production facilities in the field. The PRC product TTCQF provides for an automated qualification process and analysis of existing code that can be used for software reuse. The interrogation subsystem permits user queries of the reusable data and components which have been identified by an analyzer and qualified with associated metrics. The concept includes reuse of non-code life-cycle components such as requirements and designs. Possible types of reusable life-cycle components include templates, generics, and as-is items. Qualification of reusable elements requires analysis (separation of candidate components into primitives), qualification (evaluation of primitives for reusability according to reusability criteria) and loading (placing qualified elements into appropriate libraries). There can be different qualifications for different installations, methodologies, applications and components. Identifying reusable software and related components is labor-intensive and is best carried out as an integrated function of an SSE.
