Online State Estimation for Time-Varying Systems

The paper investigates the problem of estimating the state of a time-varying system with a linear measurement model; in particular, the paper considers the case where the number of measurements available can be smaller than the number of states. In lieu of a batch linear least-squares (LS) approach well-suited for static networks, where a sufficient number of measurements could be collected to obtain a full-rank design matrix the paper proposes an online algorithm to estimate the possibly time-varying state by processing measurements as and when available. The design of the algorithm hinges on a generalized LS cost augmented with a proximal-point-type regularization. With the solution of the regularized LS problem available in closed-form, the online algorithm is written as a linear dynamical system where the state is updated based on the previous estimate and based on the new available measurements. Conditions under which the algorithmic steps are in fact a contractive mapping are shown, and bounds on the estimation error are derived for different noise models. Numerical simulations are provided to corroborate the analytical findings.

Implementing Software Resiliency in HPX for Extreme Scale Computing

The DOE Office of Science Exascale Computing Project (ECP) outlines the next milestones in the supercomputing domain. The target computing systems under the project will deliver 10x performance while keeping the power budget under 30 megawatts. With such large machines, the need to make applications resilient has become paramount. The benefits of adding resiliency to mission critical and scientific applications, includes the reduced cost of restarting the failed simulation both in terms of time and power. Most of the current implementation of resiliency at the software level makes use of a Coordinated Checkpoint and Restart (C/R). This technique of resiliency generates a consistent global snapshot, also called a checkpoint. Generating snapshots involves global communication and coordination and is achieved by synchronizing all running processes. The generated checkpoint is then stored in some form of persistent storage. On failure detection, the runtime initiates a global rollback to the most recent previously saved checkpoint. This involves aborting all running processes, rolling them back to the previous state and restarting them.

TBAA20: Task-Based Algorithms and Applications

The new challenges posed by Exascale system architectures have resulted in difficulty achieving a desired scalability using traditional distributed memory runtimes. Task-based programming models show promise in addressing these challenges, providing application developers with a productive and performant approach to programming on next generation systems. Empirical studies show that task-based models can overcome load balancing issues that are inherent to traditional distributed memory runtimes, and that task-based runtimes perform comparably to those systems when balanced. This panel is designed to explore the advantages of task-based programming models on modern and future HPC systems from an industry, university, and national lab perspective. It aims at gathering application experts and proponents of these models to present concrete and practical examples of using task-based runtimes to overcome the challenges posed by Exascale system architectures. This report describes the objectives, activities, and outcomes of the panel TBAA: Task-Based Algorithms and Applications which was held at the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC 20) on November 18, 2020.

Transforming Cyber Education thru Open to All Accessible Pathways

Boise State University’s (BSU) Cyber Operations and Resilience CORe program was intentionally designed so that any student, especially non-traditional and non-technical students, with an interest in cybersecurity could have an education and training pathway to enter the cyber workforce. The CORe curriculum focuses on teaching students how to design, apply, and improve cybersecurity through the interaction of people, processes, and technology. CORe is a stackable curriculum with elective credit hours and options for various academic and industry certificates and certifications that enable students to customize their unique career pathway. The CORe program guides students to think about the system being managed, the risks presented, and the dynamic intersection of system elements when considering how to incorporate resilience frameworks in achieving a resilient system. By developing systems thinking, the students gain an understanding of the interdependencies interacting with the operational system. Further, the CORe program encourages students to integrate cybersecurity knowledge with models and frameworks found in other academic disciplines through a unifying systems approach. CORe is designed around the realities of today’s broad cyber landscape: that breaches will occur in any system over time and proactive design of resilience into systems to detect, respond, and recover in a timely and orderly manner is critical. Students are taught to think holistically about cybersecurity focusing on all system elements. CORe is not a traditional cybersecurity degree. CORe is distinguished by the non-traditional engineering, computer science approach to cybersecurity education with the singular focus on infusing resilience operations and transdisciplinary systems thinking principles throughout the curriculum.

Buffer Management Simulation in ATM Networks

This paper presents a simulation of a new dynamic buffer allocation management scheme in ATM networks. To achieve this objective, an algorithm that detects congestion and updates the dynamic buffer allocation scheme was developed for the OPNET simulation package via the creation of a new ATM module.

The Deep Impact Network Experiment Operations Center Monitor and Control System

The Interplanetary Overlay Network (ION) software at JPL is an implementation of Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) which has been proposed as an interplanetary protocol to support space communication. The JPL Deep Impact Network (DINET) is a technology development experiment intended to increase the technical readiness of the JPL implemented ION suite. The DINET Experiment Operations Center (EOC) developed by JPL's Protocol Technology Lab (PTL) was critical in accomplishing the experiment. EOC, containing all end nodes of simulated spaces and one administrative node, exercised publish and subscribe functions for payload data among all end nodes to verify the effectiveness of data exchange over ION protocol stacks. A Monitor and Control System was created and installed on the administrative node as a multi-tiered internet-based Web application to support the Deep Impact Network Experiment by allowing monitoring and analysis of the data delivery and statistics from ION. This Monitor and Control System includes the capability of receiving protocol status messages, classifying and storing status messages into a database from the ION simulation network, and providing web interfaces for viewing the live results in addition to interactive database queries.
