Ensuring Σ s Y s = 1 in transport of species mass fractions

When transporting species mass fractions in reacting flow simulations, there are physical constraints that must be met. Unfortunately, nonlinear transport schemes such as weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes do not ensure that the sum of mass fractions equals 1. In detonation simulations, errors in the sum of mass fractions are observed to worsen over time when the standard WENO scheme is used. To prevent this, typically one species is forced to absorb all or most of the error in the sum of mass fractions. Here, this work presents an alternative method for correcting the WENO-interpolated mass fractions such that inert species do not change. The method is demonstrated for both argon and nitrogen-diluted hydrogen detonations in one dimension. Using the modified WENO interpolations, the error in the sum is reduced significantly. In addition, the new approach is better able to capture the physical instability expected for nitrogen-diluted detonations.

A quantitative study of retention and release of deuterium and tritium during irradiation of y-LiAlO2 pellets

This study reports on the quantification of deuterium in ion-irradiated gamma-LiAlO2 pellets as a function of dose and temperature. The gamma-LiAlO2 pellets were sequentially irradiated with He+ and D2+ ions to the same fluences of 5E16, 1E17 and 2E17 He++D+/cm2 at 188 K. Additional irradiation was performed to 1E17, 2E17 and 4E17 He++D+/cm2 at 573 K. A set of the pellets irradiated at 188 K was shipped and stored at low temperatures from 80 to 132 K and characterized using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry at ~173 K. The deuterium depth profiles show a Gaussian-like distribution in the low-temperature pellets. The total deuterium retention is found to be directly proportional to the ion fluence. About 27 at.% of the implanted deuterium atoms were released from the pellet irradiated to 2E17 He++D+/cm2 at 188 K during storage at room temperature for ~1 month. Retention of the trapped or bound deuterium during ion irradiation at 573 K increases initially with ion fluence and tends to saturate at a high fluence. The amount of the released deuterium is observed to be quantitatively consistent with that of the released tritium from similar standard pellets during neutron irradiation at 573 K.

Development of coherent-precipitate-hardened high-entropy alloys with hierarchical NiAl/Ni 2 TiAl precipitates in CrMnFeCoNiAl x Ti y alloys

Coherent precipitates hardening is currently emerging strengthening mechanism of the various high entropy alloys (HEAs). Recently, CrMnFeCoNiAl x HEAs have been studied to show a phase transition from face-centered-cubic (FCC) to body-centered-cubic (BCC) and formation of coherent precipitates (B2-NiAl) within the BCC matrix. The coherent precipitates in the CrMnFeCoNiAl x alloys could contribute to increase the strength but lead to considerable reduction of the ductility. The present work systematically investigated a series of CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti x alloys to further improve the strength and plasticity, as compared to the previously reported CrMnFeCoNiAl x HEAs. As a result, an increase of Ti addition leads to the phase transition from FCC to BCC and formation of lamellar structure and hierarchical precipitates reinforced by B2-NiAl and L2 1 -Ni 2 TiAl phases. Excellent mechanical properties were achieved from CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti 0.1 and CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti 0.2 alloys. Herein, the mechanical properties of the CrMnFeCoNiAl 0.5 Ti x alloys were discussed via theoretical strengthening mechanisms.

Pinhole electrical conductivity in polycrystalline Si on locally etched SiN$_y$/SiO$_x$ passivating contacts for Si solar cells

State-of-the-art monocrystalline Si (c-Si) solar cells require passivating contacts to achieve a high degree of charge-carrier separation and collection. In this work, we focus on boron-doped polycrystalline Si on locally etched silicon nitride/silicon oxide (PLENO) passivating contacts. In PLENO contacts, excellent surface passivation is provided by the ~10 nm dielectric bilayer, while pinholes in the dielectric bilayer, that are filled with doped polycrystalline Si, provide charge-carrier selectivity and transport. During PLENO fabrication, etch undercut in the dielectric bilayer occurs. Here, using electrical characterization and microscopies, we show that undercut causes pinholes to be electrically resistive in PLENO. A processing sequence that eliminates the undercut in the final PLENO structure results in electrically conductive pinholes with low contact resistivity.

($\mathrm{INVITED}$)Counter-ion effect on the diffusion behavior of $\mathrm{Y}$b, $\mathrm{L}$u, and $\mathrm{N}$d ions in $\mathrm{YAG}$ transparent ceramics

The ability to fabricate additively manufactured laser waveguides with sharp dopant concentration interfaces is limited by diffusion of the dopants at the temperatures required to fully densify the material. Compositional analysis of bilayer samples, where each layer was either undoped YAG or YAG doped with Yb, Lu, or Nd, were fabricated such that all combinations were available for testing. Samples were fabricated at both 1750°C and 1850°C to determine the diffusion behavior of each dopant alone and also in the presence of a second dopant. It was found that the experimental concentration profiles exhibited both intragranular (bulk) and grain boundary contributions, and thus fitting to a complementary error function equation required the use of two diffusion coefficients. Nd always diffused further along grain boundaries than the other dopants, due in part to its small segregation coefficient in YAG. It is shown that the presence of Nd as a counter dopant inhibits intragranular diffusion of other dopants while enhancing their grain boundary diffusion. All the observed trends were attributed to a combination of intragranular lattice strain due to: dopant ions replacing yttrium substitutionally, the relative driving forces for the segregation of dopant ions to grain boundaries, and the ability of one dopant to affect the diffusion of a different dopant in the other direction to maintain charge neutrality.

Search for Higgs boson decays into Z and J/ψ and for Higgs and Z boson decays into J/ψ or Y pairs in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV

Decays of the Higgs boson into a z boson and a J/ψ or ψ(2S) meson are searched for in four-lepton final states with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 is used. Using the same data set, decays of the Higgs and z boson into quarkonium pairs are also searched for. An observation of such decays with this sample would indicate the presence of physics beyond the standard model. No evidence for these decays has been observed and upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the corresponding branching fractions ($\mathscr{B}$). Assuming longitudinal polarization of the Higgs boson decay products, 95% confidence level observed upper limits for $\mathcal{B}$(H→ZJ/ψ) and $\mathcal{B}$(H→Zψ(2S)) are 1.9 X 10 -3 and 6.6 X 10 -3 , respectively.

Bond valence sum analysis of pyrochlore oxides including the novel dielectric Te 6+ pyrochlores: A Bi M TeO 7-y ( A = Cd, Ca; M = Cr, Ga, Sc, In, Fe)

Bond valence sum analysis is a powerful tool used in evaluating and validating crystal structures; especially when those structures are complex in nature. The pyrochlore structure type is versatile in not only the unique bonding that it exhibits, but also in the properties that results from the structure. Here this paper aims to center the discussion of evaluating the pyrochlore structure using the bond valence sum method. In this study, novel quaternary pyrochlores with a general stoichiometry of ABiMTeO 7 (A = Cd, Ca; M = Cr, Ga, Sc, In, Fe) were synthesized and characterized for their structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Two representative compounds within this series of pyrochlores, BiCaFeTeO7 and BiCdFeTeO 7 , were structurally characterized utilizing a combination of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction revealing oxygen deficient pyrochlore systems which were off from the expected stoichiometry with respect to the M site. The A site of both pyrochlores were found to be moved off-center from the expected 16d site to the 96h displaced position at a magnitude of 0.25 Å and 0.22 Å for the Bi/Ca and Bi/Cd systems, respectively. These structures were evaluated using the bond valence sum method and compared with trends in the literature. The properties are also reported for the Bi/Ca system for the first time, showing relatively high dielectric constants with a low dielectric loss which are primarily independent of frequency and temperature. The magnetic measurements for the Bi/Ca system for the magnetic substitutions reveal a paramagnet and antiferromagnetic properties for the Fe and Cr analogs, respectively. The novel BiCaMTeO 7 quaternary pyrochlore system shows great promise as an emerging dielectric material.
