Laser Radar Through the Window (LRTW) Coordinate Correction Method

A method for corrections of measurements of points of interests measured by beams of radiation propagating through stratified media including performance of ray-tracing of at least one ray lunched from a metrology instrument in a direction of an apparent point of interest, calculation a path length of the ray through stratified medium, and determination of coordinates of true position of the point interest using the at least one path length and the direction of propagation of the ray.

Time and Laser Ranging: A Window of Opportunity for Geodesy, Navigation and Metrology

Recent progress in the domain of time and frequency (T/F) standards requires important improvements of existing time distribution links. Among these, the accuracy of time transfer is actually an important part of the concerns in order to establish and maintain time & space references from ground and/or space facilities. Several time transfers by laser link projects have been carried out over the past 10 years with numerous scientific and metrological objectives. Satellite Laser ranging (SLR) has proven to be a fundamental tool, offering a straightforward, conceptually simple, highly accurate and unambiguous observable. Depending on the mission, LR is used to transmit time over two-way or one-way distances from 500 to several millions of km. The following missions and their objectives employed this technique: European Laser Timing (ELT) at 450 km, Time Transfer by Laser Link (T2L2) at 1,336 km, Laser Time Transfer (LTT) at 36,000 km, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) at 350,000 km, and MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) at tens of million km. This article describes the synergy between SLR and T/F technologies developed on the ground and in space and as well as the state of the art of their exploitation. The performance and sources of limitation of such space missions are analyzed. It shows that current and future challenges lie in the improvement of the time accuracy and stability of the time for ground geodetic observatories. The role of the next generation of SLR systems is emphasized both in space and at ground level, from the point of view of GGOS and valuable exploitation of the synergy between time synchronization, ranging and data transfer.

A Window in the Future of Planetary Surface Navigation

The presentation focuses on surface navigation and mapping challenges in planetary environments including Lunar and Martian surface. Imagery from precursor orbital missions are processed to provide a medium resolution, large coverage 2D and 3D maps used by the science and navigation teams. During the surface mission these mapping products together with the images captured from the on-board camera systems are used in rover localization and navigation.

A Robust Initialization Scheme for a Lateral Trajectory Optimization Problem with Time of Arrival Windows

We present a robust initialization scheme that estimates parameter values for the numerical solution of a two-point boundary value problem. The two-point boundary value problem formulation stems from the optimization of a cost functional subject to the dynamics of a simplified lateral aircraft model and other constraints. Leveraging regular perturbation methods, initial parameter estimates are analytically determined and used to initialize a gradient descent optimization routine which is shown to rapidly converge over a range of initial aircraft positions and heading angles. Additionally, the velocity of the aircraft is optimized to ensure the trajectory of the aircraft terminates within a desired region in both time and space.

Metabolic Control Technology: Through the Windows of Space Exploration

As human presence in space will likely extend throughout the solar system, upmass and power constraints will become of paramount importance in considering logistics of transporting experimental animals and humans into space. Life support costs will be a significant part of the mission payload. One solution may be to take advantage of the emerging science of metabolic control, which allows the metabolism of animals to be reduced to a minimal level for a period of time, and allows for subsequent restoration to normal levels. Integration of a hibernation system within deep space mission architecture will solve many problems associated with long-duration space missions, such as payload cost reduction, space flight duration logistics, and demonstrate the potential application of this technology for human astronauts.

The Atacama Desert: A Window into Late Mars Surface Habitability?

Decades of robotic exploration have revealed that Mars was capable of sustaining life in the Noachian and Hesperian periods (> 3 billion years ago). But habitability conditions progressively deteriorated thereafter, and a lasting trend of climate change has made the surface of the planet likely uninhabitable at present times. One of the outstanding enigmas in Mars exploration is when was the last time that the surface of the planet could have sustained life. In this chapter we address this question through comparisons with one of the oldest and driest deserts on Earth, the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. We base our analysis on a latitudinal rainfall gradient that allows to investigate how microbial communities respond to increasing dryness. We posit that the ecological successions observed along the Atacama rainfall gradient represent a possible model for the adaptation of an early martian biosphere to increasing dryness throughout the planet’s geologic history, offering clues to the last surface environments that could have sustained life, and the timing of the last surface habitable period. These might in turn be the best locations to search for evidence of life.

Design of an event-driven random-access-windowing CCD-based camera

Commercially available cameras are not designed for the combination of single frame and high-speed streaming digital video with real-time control of size and location of multiple regions-of-interest (ROI). A new control paradigm is defined to eliminate the tight coupling between the camera logic and the host controller. This functionality is achieved by defining the indivisible pixel read out operation on a per ROI basis with in-camera time keeping capability. This methodology provides a Random Access, Real-time, Event-driven (RARE) camera for adaptive camera control and is well suited for target tracking applications requiring autonomous control of multiple ROIs. This methodology additionally provides for reduced ROI read out time and higher frame rates compared to the original architecture by avoiding external control intervention during the ROI read out process.

Nonlinear Multi-Window Controllers

In many control designs the error signal is split into parallel channels which are tailored to be significant over distinct frequency ranges and are then recombined. Often, at least one channel contains nonlinear elements, The most common example is a PID controller with an anti-windup nonlinearity in the I-channel. A more general example using higher-order compensators is presented, which is a thermal controller for a spacecraft-mounted telescope.
