Command system output bit verification

An automatic test was developed to test the ability of the deep space station (DSS) command subsystem and exciter to generate and radiate, from the exciter, the correct idle bit sequence for a given flight project or to store and radiate received command data elements and files without alteration. This test, called the command system output bit verification test, is an extension of the command system performance test (SPT) and can be selected as an SPT option. The test compares the bit stream radiated from the DSS exciter with reference sequences generated by the SPT software program. The command subsystem and exciter are verified when the bit stream and reference sequences are identical. It is a key element of the acceptance testing conducted on the command processor assembly (CPA) operational program (DMC-0584-OP-G) prior to its transfer from development to operations.

Structural dynamics verification facility study

The need for a structural dynamics verification facility to support structures programs was studied. Most of the industry operated facilities are used for highly focused research, component development, and problem solving, and are not used for the generic understanding of the coupled dynamic response of major engine subsystems. Capabilities for the proposed facility include: the ability to both excite and measure coupled structural dynamic response of elastic blades on elastic shafting, the mechanical simulation of various dynamical loadings representative of those seen in operating engines, and the measurement of engine dynamic deflections and interface forces caused by alternative engine mounting configurations and compliances.

Verification of elastic-wave static displacement in solids

The solution of the nonlinear differential equation which describes an initially sinusoidal finite-amplitude elastic wave propagating in a solid contains a static-displacement term in addition to the harmonic terms. The static-displacement amplitude is theoretically predicted to be proportional to the product of the squares of the driving-wave amplitude and the driving-wave frequency. The first experimental verification of the elastic-wave static displacement in a solid (the 111 direction of single-crystal germanium) is reported, and agreement is found with the theoretical predictions.

Production readiness verification testing

A Production Readiness Verification Testing (PRVT) program has been established to determine if structures fabricated from advanced composites can be committed on a production basis to commercial airline service. The program utilizes subcomponents which reflect the variabilities in structure that can realistically be expected from current production and quality control technology to estimate the production qualities, variation in static strength, and durability of advanced composite structures. The results of the static tests and a durability assessment after one year of continuous load/environment testing of twenty two duplicates of each of two structural components (a segment of the front spar and cover of a vertical stabilizer box structure) are discussed.

Bay of Fundy verification of a system for multidate Landsat measurement of suspended sediment

A system for automated multidate Landsat CCT MSS measurement of suspended sediment concentration (S) has been implemented and verified on nine sets (108 points) of data from the Bay of Fundy, Canada. The system employs 'chromaticity analysis' to provide automatic pixel-by-pixel adjustment of atmospheric variations, permitting reference calibration data from one or several dates to be spatially and temporally extrapolated to other regions and to other dates. For verification, each data set was used in turn as test data against the remainder as a calibration set: the average absolute error was 44 percent of S over the range 1-1000 mg/l. The system can be used to measure chlorophyll (in the absence of atmospheric variations), Secchi disk depth, and turbidity.

Methodology evaluation: Effects of independent verification and intergration on one class of application

The effects of an independent verification and integration (V and I) methodology on one class of application are described. Resource profiles are discussed. The development environment is reviewed. Seven measures are presented to test the hypothesis that V and I improve the development and product. The V and I methodology provided: (1) a decrease in requirements ambiguities and misinterpretation; (2) no decrease in design errors; (3) no decrease in the cost of correcting errors; (4) a decrease in the cost of system and acceptance testing; (5) an increase in early discovery of errors; (6) no improvement in the quality of software put into operation; and (7) a decrease in productivity and an increase in cost.

Design, analysis, and test verification of advanced encapsulation systems

Design sensitivities are established for the development of photovoltaic module criteria and the definition of needed research tasks. The program consists of three phases. In Phase I, analytical models were developed to perform optical, thermal, electrical, and structural analyses on candidate encapsulation systems. From these analyses several candidate systems will be selected for qualification testing during Phase II. Additionally, during Phase II, test specimens of various types will be constructed and tested to determine the validity of the analysis methodology developed in Phase I. In Phse III, a finalized optimum design based on knowledge gained in Phase I and II will be developed. All verification testing was completed during this period. Preliminary results and observations are discussed. Descriptions of the thermal, thermal structural, and structural deflection test setups are included.

Aircraft geometry verification with enhanced computer generated displays

A method for visual verification of aerodynamic geometries using computer generated, color shaded images is described. The mathematical models representing aircraft geometries are created for use in theoretical aerodynamic analyses and in computer aided manufacturing. The aerodynamic shapes are defined using parametric bi-cubic splined patches. This mathematical representation is then used as input to an algorithm that generates a color shaded image of the geometry. A discussion of the techniques used in the mathematical representation of the geometry and in the rendering of the color shaded display is presented. The results include examples of color shaded displays, which are contrasted with wire frame type displays. The examples also show the use of mapped surface pressures in terms of color shaded images of V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft and advanced turboprop aircraft.

Real-time computer simulation/emulation for verification of multi-fault-tolerant control of Centaur-in-Shuttle

NASA has contracted with General Dynamics to design and develop an advanced Centaur liquid upper stage for support of the Galileo and Solar Polar interplanetary missions in 1985-86. The control of the Centaur while it resides in the Shuttle cargo bay must meet the STS safety requirements to be dual failure tolerant in all mission critical functions. The demonstration of the integrity of this control system in the event of multiple component failures and worst-case time-phase asynchroniety among the system's computers is performed by a real-time computer simulation. The simulation emulates the control hardware, subsystem interfaces, and imbedded software processes, wire-by-wire, to provide accessibility for fault insertion. Observability is provided via graphics and diagnostic software. Verification is the product of Monte Carlo simulation analysis.

GAS Verification Payload - From concept through flight

The GAS Verification Payload (GVP), successfully flown on STS-3, was the forerunner of the Get Away Special class of payloads. Intended to provide GAS experiments with flight environmental information, it also served to shape out the GAS support systems and establish areas of programmatic understanding between the GSFC, JSC, and KSC. Originally envisaged as using a sounding rocket build-it, test-it, fly-it approach with minimum paperwork, this naivete dissipated when faced with the manned space flight world of JSC. What evolved was an understanding by both disciplines that safety and reliability could be achieved at lower cost without compromise.

Verification testing of the PKI collector at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Verification testing of a solar collector was undertaken prior to its operation as part of an industrial process heat plant at Capitol Concrete Products in Topeka, Kansas. Testing was performed at a control plant installed at Sandia National Laboratory, Albuquerque, New Mexico (SNLA). Early results show that plant performance is even better than anticipated and far in excess of test criteria. Overall plant efficiencies of 65 to 80 percent were typical during hours of good insolation. A number of flaws and imperfections were detected during operability testing, the most important being a problem in elevation drive alignment due to a manufacturing error. All problems were corrected as they occurred and the plant, with over 40 hours of operation, is currently continuing operability testing in a wholly-automatic mode.

Approaches to wind resource verification

Verification of the regional wind energy resource assessments produced by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory addresses the question: Is the magnitude of the resource given in the assessments truly representative of the area of interest? Approaches using qualitative indicators of wind speed (tree deformation, eolian features), old and new data of opportunity not at sites specifically chosen for their exposure to the wind, and data by design from locations specifically selected to be good wind sites are described. Data requirements and evaluation procedures for verifying the resource are discussed.

WTS-4 system verification unit for wind/hydroelectric integration study

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) initiated a study to investigate the concept of integrating 100 MW of wind energy from megawatt-size wind turbines with the Federal hydroelectric system. As a part of the study, one large wind turbine was purchased through the competitive bid process and is now being installed to serve as a system verification unit (SVU). Reclamation negotiated an agreement with NASA to provide technical management of the project for the design, fabrication, installation, testing, and initial operation. Hamilton Standard was awarded a contract to furnish and install its WTS-4 wind turbine rated at 4 MW at a site near Medicine Bow, Wyoming. The purposes for installing the SVU are to fully evaluate the wind/hydro integration concept, make technical evaluation of the hardware design, train personnel in the technology, evaluate operation and maintenance aspects, and evaluate associated environmental impacts. The SVU will be operational in June 1982. Data from the WTS-4 and from a second SVU, Boeing's MOD-2, will be used to prepare a final design for a 100-MW farm if Congress authorizes the project.
