Project Risk Assessment and Monitoring for CarbonSAFE Illinois - Macon County (Task 2)

A risk evaluation performed for CarbonSAFE Macon County included performing a risk assessment for the overall project and the identification of technical project risks. These tasks were accomplished through a combination of risk assessment meetings, workshops, expert solicitation, and identifying and implementing risk mitigation or prevention activities. Information from previous carbon storage projects and from the execution of the project (including drilling a test well and conducting 2D seismic survey) were assessed to identify future risks towards the development of a storage complex.

A Non-Invasive Approach for Elucidating the Spatial Distribution of In-Situ Stress in Deep Subsurface Geologic Formations Considered for CO 2 Storage (Task 3 Report Laboratory Characterization of Stress Dependent Wavespeed)

This report presents a summary of Task 3 (Laboratory Experimental Characterization of Stress Dependent Wavespeed in Rocks and Application for In-Situ Stress Estimation) of the project titled “A Non-Invasive Approach for Elucidating the Spatial Distribution of In-Situ Stress in Deep Subsurface Geologic Formations Considered for CO 2 Storage”. The main objective of this component of the project was to employ non-destructive techniques to determine how compressional (P)-wave and shear (S)-wave propagation velocities are related to triaxial-stress conditions in laboratory test samples of targeted reservoir rocks. The overarching principle is that such laboratory measurements can provide a basis whereby field measurements of wave-propagation velocities in rocks can be used to ascertain the stress state that would be expected to generate the observed wave-propagation behavior.

NDCS Group Meeting Work overview: NCSP Task ORNL IP&D-5 [Slides]

The presentation discusses the primary goal of the NCSP Task IP&D-5 which is to use available data from HPRR operation to create a benchmark report for inclusion in the ICSBEP, as a Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) shielding benchmark. The presentation elaborates on the HPRR operation and how it relates to the KENO VI model, sulfur pellets measurements, and calculation methodology between KENO and MAVRIC FW-CADIS. The presentation concludes by stating that some work is still needed to evaluate uncertainties and to explain the discrepancy computation/experiment.

IEA Wind TCP Task 26: Wind Technology, Cost, and Performance Trends for Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the European Union, and the United States 2016-2019

The Cost of Wind Energy represents an international collaboration dedicated to exploring the historical and future cost of wind energy in addition to the investigating the market value wind energy may provide. The countries that are currently represented by participating organizations in IEA Wind TCP Task 26 included in this report are Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the European Union, and the United States. This manuscript documents technology and cost trends from 2008 through 2019 and discusses the trends from 2016 through 2019 that affected the cost of land-based wind energy within each country. The cost of wind energy during this period is compared with the market value of wind energy in the respective electricity market for each country.

5G Securely Energized and Resilient: Task 2 and 3 Progress Report

The 5G Securely Energized and Resilient project implemented at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense and is designed to demonstrate the successful deployment of 5G-6G (FutureG) technologies in the context of electrical microgrid scenarios. Through implementation of this project, cybersecurity researchers were able to design a platform to better understand the fundamental system architecture, limitations, and benefits of 5G systems supporting energy system requirements. Although the work for this project was developed in the context of “FutureG Advanced Component Development & Prototypes,” which is a U.S. Department of Defense effort to ensure communications system resilience in the context of military deployments, the results can also apply to communications for electrical grids in general. Several key points were established in Tasks 2 and 3 of this project that are further expanded on in the body of this document.

Advanced Laboratory and Field Arrays: Evaluating Sampling Techniques for MHK Biological Monitoring (Task 6)

The overall goal of the task was to identify cost effective biological sampling techniques for MHK environmental monitoring. Protected, demersal, and pelagic fish and selected nektonic invertebrates were surveyed using capture and remote sensing techniques at the PacWave sites. The performance of capture and remote sensing monitoring techniques were evaluated and generic nekton monitoring indices were developed for MHK technologies and sites. In parallel to data collections at the PacWave site, the ability of regression models to characterize, detect, and predict change in acoustic data was evaluated using acoustic data collected in Admiralty Inlet, WA, during a biological monitoring study of the proposed SnoPud tidal turbine project site. Expected outcomes of these efforts included an evaluation of instrumentation and techniques used to monitor biological variability; identification of data streams that can be used to detect and quantify change; and sampling requirements to ensure detection of change in monitored variables.

As part of Task 5 (New Grid Control Architectures) of Mission Innovation, Innovation Challenge 1, a questionnaire was provided to all countries participating in the project. In this document, PNNL has responded to the questionnaire with information regarding new grid control architectures being proposed or developed in the US. Ron Melton sent the report to all participants.

SMART Task 6: Evaluation of the Costs of Geologic CO2 Storage for the Illinois Basin Decatur Project Site Using the NRAP/SMART Technoeconomic and Liability Evaluation for Storage (TALES) Model

This is a presentation featuring an analysis related to SMART Task 6 in which CO2 storage costs are presented. The National Energy Technology Laboratory has developed the NRAP/SMART Technoeconomic and Liability Evaluation for Storage (TALES) model to provide quantitative cost-based insights to support developers planning CO2 injection and storage projects. TALES calculates the revenues, costs, and financial performance of candidate CO2 saline storage project based on site-specific activity costs and financial parameters. TALES is being integrated as a module pertaining to storage cost as part of the broader SMART Visualization and Decision Support Platform (SVDSP). In this study, the TALES model was applied using real activity cost data associated with the development and operations at the Illinois Basin Decatur Project (IBDP) CO2 storage project site. Scenario analysis was implemented in which crucial operational and cost attributes were varied and the associated cost implications observed. Key results data and project cost summary metrics like first-year breakeven price of CO2 ($/tonne) and net present value (NPV) are presented in similar fashion to how they will appear in the SVDSP.

Lab Collaboration Project (LCP) for Marine Energy: Nonlinear Ocean Waves and PTO Control Strategy (Task 11)

The objectives for this task was to advance analysis and simulation capabilities for wave-WEC interactions and PTO analysis in nonlinear ocean waves. The improvements involve advancements in the generation of nonlinear wave time series and in nonlinear control strategies resulting in a detailed examination of WEC-wave interaction under scarcely-studied nonlinear conditions.

SHASTA: Task 2.2: Sensor Development for Subsurface Hydrogen Storage Monitoring Technology Maturation and Commercialization Plan (TMCP)

In Task 2.2 under the SHASTA program, NETL is developing in-situ optical fiber sensors for real-time monitoring of hydrogen, methane, and chemical parameters such as pH at subsurface hydrogen storage conditions. This Technology Maturation and Commercialization Plan report will provide the summary of NETL sensor development and test results under the SHASTA program to meet the subsurface application requirements and proposed technology maturation and deployment plan, and commercialization potential.

Annual Report on NCSP Technical Support task in BNL during FY24

This work reports on the investigations done during FY 24 in collaboration with two 2024 Summer undergraduate interns through the DOE SULI and BNL SURP programs. These efforts were partially funded by the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program through the Technical Support Succession Plan task. The first project, developed by Ian Snider, focused on testing the impact of uncertainties in thermal cross sections for multiple materials in nuclear reactor simulations. The second project aimed implement concurrent into BNL’s machine-learning code to correct spin mis-assignments in neutron resonances, the Bayesian Resonance Reclassifier (BRR).

NRAP Task 5: Preliminary Evaluation of the Cost of Responding to a Hypothetical Leakage Scenario Using the NRAP/SMART TALES Model and other NRAP Tools

Emergency Management of Tomorrow Research – Task 3B Research and Development Community Awareness: Eliciting Emergency Management Stakeholder Input

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) is partnering with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to execute the Emergency Management (EM) of Tomorrow Research (EMOTR) program to identify current EM research, elicit capability needs from EM practitioners, and identify where technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI), may benefit the future of EM and emergency operations centers. This report details the methodology, analysis, and insights of interviews and focus groups conducted as part of the task to elicit stakeholder input.

MRCI Task 4: Evaluating Regional Infrastructure Technical Summary Report

The infrastructure required to enable carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) goes beyond the equipment and materials needed to capture, transport, and store carbon dioxide (CO2) but includes people and policy that make CCS feasible. The Infrastructure Assessment task of the Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative (MRCI) seeks to determine the infrastructure requirements for the MRCI study area through four activities: • Infrastructure Readiness: Strategizing the buildout of capture, transport, and storage infrastructure in the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic Offshore. • Site Readiness: Determining the CCS readiness of each state in the MRCI region in the categories of subsurface readiness; infrastructure readiness; regulations, permitting, and incentives; and social dynamics. • Jobs, Economics, and Social Characteristics: Quantifying the economic potential, job opportunities, and training opportunities for CCS as well as the social characteristics of the region with a focus on energy and environmental justice (EJ) issues. • Policy and Regulations: Providing an updated accounting of the CCS-relevant policy and regulations in the MRCI region.

Open-source Tip-and-Cue for Change-Detection Tasking

Currently, no tool exists to detect daily change across the globe, let alone to do so cost- and resource-efficiently. The proposed tool will use open-source data to detect change in near-real-time to identify targets of interest for tasking, providing a unique capability for constant global situational awareness.
