Test and evaluation of Apollo 14 composite casting demonstration specimens and flight and control samples

The results of experiments 1, 2, and 10 of the Apollo 14 composite casting demonstration are discussed. The purpose of the demonstration, with regard to samples 1 and 2, was to obtain preliminary data on the liquid phase sintering process in a weightless environment. With regard to sample 10, the purpose was to obtain preliminary information on how to achieve uniform dispersion of dense particles on a metal matrix by employing shaking modes or forces in the system when the metal matrix is molten. Results of the demonstrations were interpreted in a quantitative and qualitative manner. For experiment 1 it was found that the tungsten particles were redistributed more uniformly in the flight sample than in the control sample. Experiment 2 results indicate that complete melting may not have occured and thus a high degree of significance cannot be associated with the qualitative results relating to particle redistribution data. The particle-matrix system of experiment 10 was found to be nonwetting.

Documentation and environment of the Apollo 16 samples: A preliminary report

A catalog which is a working document that shows the locations from which samples were collected during the Apollo 16 mission, and that provides a descriptive geologic context for each sample is presented. It is a compilation of notes from work in progress, and supersedes an earlier report prepared by the Apollo Lunar Geology Investigation Team. The information was obtained from the Air-to-Ground transcript from the astronaut crew, from lunar surface television, from 60 mm Hasselblad camera photographs, and from available LRL mugshot photographs of the samples. The sample descriptions are based on these sources of data.

Corn blight review: Sampling model and ground data measurements program

The sampling plan involved the selection of the study area, determination of the flightline and segment sample design within the study area, and determination of a field sample design. Initial interview survey data consisting of crop species acreage and land use were collected. On all corn fields, additional information such as seed type, row direction, population, planting date, ect. were also collected. From this information, sample corn fields were selected to be observed through the growing season on a biweekly basis by county extension personnel.

Ar-40/Ar-39 ages and cosmic ray exposure ages of Apollo 14 samples.

We have used the Ar-40/Ar-39 dating technique on eight samples of Apollo 14 rocks (14053, 14310), breccia fragments (14321), and soil fragments (14001, 14167). The large basalt fragments give reasonable Ar-40/Ar-39 release patterns and yield well defined crystallization ages of 3.89-3.95 aeons. Correlation of the Ar-40/Ar-39 release patterns with Ar-39/Ar-37 patterns showed that the low temperature fractions with high radiogenic argon loss came from K-rich phases. A highly shocked sample and fragments included in the breccia yield complex release patterns with a low temperature peak. The total argon age of these fragments is 3.95 aeons. Cosmic ray exposure ages on these samples are obtained from the ratio of spallogenic Ar-38 to reactor induced Ar-37 and show a distinct grouping of low exposure ages of 26 m.y. correlated with Cone crater. Other samples have exposure ages of more than 260 m.y. and identify material with a more complex integrated cosmic age exposure history.

A thermal conductivity cell for small powdered samples.

A thermal conductivity cell is described for making measurements of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of small samples of powdered dielectric materials. The principle used is that of the line heat source. A novel way is described for applying this method so that much smaller samples than normal may be tested. This size requirement is necessary for investigations involving limited samples as does the Lunar Science Program. The method is checked by measuring the conductivity of standard samples and comparing the results with those found in the literature.

Mineralogy, petrology, and chemistry of a Luna 16 basaltic fragment, sample B-1.

Petrological, mineralogical, and chemical investigations of the B-1 Luna 16 sample have revealed that the sample is a fine-grained ophitic basalt which is distinguished from the Apollo samples by containing a single pyroxene, an ilmenite content intermediate to that of the Apollo samples, and subequal amounts of pyroxene and plagioclase. It is also distinguished by a high Sr content and a high K/U value.

Generalized multi-dimensional sampling theory and applications in optical systems.

Summary of the generalized sampling theory developed by Peterson (1963) and others, which treated multidimensional impulse-modulation periodic sampling, applicable to any multidimensional process. Particular attention is given to the two-dimensional case (N = 2) for which applications in optical systems are proposed. The efficiency of sampling geometries, and digital holography and sampling theory are considered.

Phenocryst fabric in lunar basalt sample 12052 from the Ocean of Storms.

Pyroxene phenocrysts in Apollo 12 sample 12052, a porphyritic basalt, have a weak, planar preferred orientation and a lineation as determined by crystal-elongation measurements and universal-stage measurements in orthogonal thin sections. The structures are probably the result of laminar flow. Numerous vugs and the flow foliation in sample 12052 suggest crystallization as a surface flow or a near-surface sill. Flowage appears to have ceased by the time of crystallization of the variolitic groundmass of the sample. The fabric data suggest a two-stage crystallization of sample 12052.

Molecular-beam gas-sampling system

A molecular beam mass spectrometer system for rocket motor combustion chamber sampling is described. The history of the sampling system is reviewed. The problems associated with rocket motor combustion chamber sampling are reported. Several design equations are presented. The results of the experiments include the effects of cooling water flow rates, the optimum separation gap between the end plate and sampling nozzle, and preliminary data on compositions in a rocket motor combustion chamber.

Investigation of KC-135 flight samples solidified in near-zero gravity

An analysis was conducted of three KC-135 flight samples that had been solidified in near-zero gravity. These samples had been generated during near-zero gravity testing of M553 experiment Skylab flight hardware. The samples evaluated were all Star-J Satellite, a cobalt base alloy. The analytical procedures (optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and microhardness) to be use on the Skylab flight samples were optimized and the analytical results are presented.

Exact intervals and tests for median when one sample value possibly an outliner

Available are independent observations (continuous data) that are believed to be a random sample. Desired are distribution-free confidence intervals and significance tests for the population median. However, there is the possibility that either the smallest or the largest observation is an outlier. Then, use of a procedure for rejection of an outlying observation might seem appropriate. Such a procedure would consider that two alternative situations are possible and would select one of them. Either (1) the n observations are truly a random sample, or (2) an outlier exists and its removal leaves a random sample of size n-1. For either situation, confidence intervals and tests are desired for the median of the population yielding the random sample. Unfortunately, satisfactory rejection procedures of a distribution-free nature do not seem to be available. Moreover, all rejection procedures impose undesirable conditional effects on the observations, and also, can select the wrong one of the two above situations. It is found that two-sided intervals and tests based on two symmetrically located order statistics (not the largest and smallest) of the n observations have this property.

Electron petrography of Apollo sample 14310.

Thin sections prepared from Apollo sample 14310 have been examined with 100-kV transmission electron microscopy. The sample is composed principally of anorthite and pyroxene. The anorthites fall into two categories. The transitional anorthites that show the characteristic 'c' type diffraction maxima are characterized by very fine antiphase domain structures and some fine twinning. The body-centered anorthites that show no 'c' reflections are characterized by an absence of fine twinning and a less well-defined antiphase domain structure. Although both orthopyroxene and clinopyroxenes are reported in sample 14310, only clinopyroxenes were observed in this study and all show exsolution structures. The augite exsolved in pigeonite commonly is along lamellae parallel to (100), although (001) lamellae are also present. This unusual orientation was verified by diffraction patterns. The pigeonite commonly shows antiphase domains, attributed to stacking errors when the sample inverted from its high-temperature disordered form. In augite as the host phase, the pigeonite lamellae contain very complex structures including antiphase domains.

Chondrules in Apollo 14 samples and size analyses of Apollo 14 and 15 fines.

Chondrules have been observed in several breccia samples and one fines sample returned by the Apollo 14 mission. The chondrules are formed by at least three different processes that appear to be related to large impacts: (1) crystallization of shock-melted spherules and droplets; (2) rounding of rock clasts and mineral grains by abrasion in the base surge; and (3) diffusion and recrystallization around clasts in hot base surge and fall-back deposits. In the case of the Apollo 14 samples, the large impact almost certainly is the Imbrian event. Grain size analyses of undisturbed fines samples from the Apollo 14 site and from the Apollo 15 Apennine Front are almost identical, indicating that the two localities have similar meteoroid bombardment exposure ages, approximately 3.7 x 10 to the 9th yr. This observation is consistent with the interpretation that both the Fra Mauro formation and the Apennine Front material originated as ejecta from the Imbrian event.

U-Th-Pb and Rb-Sr measurements on some Apollo 14 lunar samples.

The concentrations of selected elements and elemental ratios in some Apollo 14 samples are presented in a table. Another table shows the isotopic composition of lead and strontium in some Apollo 14 samples. Graphs are provided with lead isotope ratio plots and a strontium evolution diagram. Rb-Sr ages are discussed together with isochron age methods of U-Th-Pb, a primary Pb-Pb isochron, a secondary Pb-Pb isochron, U-Pb concordia age relations, and U-Th-Pb concordia relations. Breccias and some soil samples as well as a basalt sample give evidence of significant enrichment of lead relative to uranium and thorium billions of years ago at the Fra Mauro site.

Analysis of organogenic compounds in Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar samples.

DCl was used to distinguish hydrocarbons produced by acid treatment from hydrocarbons originally present in the samples when volatiles released by acid and thermal treatments from Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar samples were studied by quadrupole mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Multiple ion plotting permitted separation of deuterated from nondeuterated hydrocarbons in the DCl products. Stepwise thermal treatment was used to distinguish the source of the volatile compounds. The presence of LM rocket exhaust products was traced in two samples, and the presence of high-temperature stable nitrides in some samples is indicated.

Rare earths, other trace elements and iron in Luna 20 samples.

The results of the analysis by neutron activation of six samples from the Luna 20 mission and one sample of less than 1 mm fines from Apollo 16 are reported. The concentrations of the rare-earth elements (REE) in the samples of fines from Luna 20 and Apollo 16 are less than those found for corresponding materials from the mare areas but a negative Eu anomaly is still present. The concentrations of the REE in fines from Luna 20 are only about two-thirds as great as in the sample of Apollo 16 fines, but the concentration of Co, Sc and Cr are greater by factors ranging from 1.5 to 2.3.
