Improving Cycling Performance of Anode-Free Lithium Batteries by Pressure and Voltage Control

The anode-free lithium (Li) batteries (AFLBs) have great potential to provide higher energy density than most other batteries. However, the performance of AFLBs is very sensitive to pressure and other operating parameters, especially for coin cells widely used in AFLB investigations. Therefore, optimizing cell assembly parameters and test protocol is critical to get reliable and comparable results in this field. In this work, the operating voltage range of AFLBs using a localized high concentration electrolyte has been optimized. The morphology of the deposited Li in AFLBs is much more indicting to the pressure than other type of batteries due to the absence of anode active material (i.e. Li) as a pressure cushion layer in the as prepared cells. With an optimized cycling protocol, a thin layer of uniform nucleation sites can be formed in the initial cycle which will facilitate smooth Li desposition/stripping in the subsequent cycles of AFLBs. The solid electrolyte interphase layer formed under optimized pressure and uniform pressure distribution exhibits a good mechanical stability even after long-term cycling. In conclusion, with an optimized cell configuration, the internal pressure in the coin cells has been optimized to improve the cycling performance of AFLBs (Cu||NMC811) with 72% of capacity retention in 100 cycles.

Ion and Hydrodynamic Translucency in 1D van der Waals Heterostructured Boron-Nitride Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

An unresolved challenge in nanofluidics is tuning ion selectivity and hydrodynamic transport in pores, particularly for those with diameters larger than a nanometer. In contrast to conventional strategies that focus on changing surface functionalization or confinement degree by varying the radial dimension of the pores, we explore a unique approach for manipulating ion selectivity and hydrodynamic flow enhancement by externally coating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a few layers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Here, for van der Waals heterostructured BN-SWCNTs, we observed a 9-fold increase in cation selectivity for K + versus Cl – compared to pristine SWCNTs of the same 2.2 nm diameter, while hydrodynamic slip lengths decreased by more than an order of magnitude. These results suggest that the single-layer graphene inner surface may be translucent to charge-regulation and hydrodynamic-slip effects arising from h-BN on the outside of the SWCNT. Such 1D heterostructures could serve as synthetic platforms with tunable properties for exploring distinct nanofluidic phenomena and their potential applications.

Influence of Alkyne Precursor Structure on Carbon Nanotube Chiral Distribution: Data-Dense Analysis Across Multiple Catalyst Types

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a desirable material in the field of optoelectronics and semiconductors due to electronic properties (e.g., bandgap) that are dependent upon their chirality, defined by their diameter and lattice angle. Unfortunately, industrial-scale syntheses have yet to realize growth of a single desired chirality and instead rely on postsynthetic separation techniques to refine a chiral mixture, which increases process complexity and cost. Here, we studied the influence of precursor structure on chiral distribution, using a series of terminal alkyne precursors (acetylene, methylacetylene, vinylacetylene, 1-butyne, two enantiomers of 3-butyn-2-ol and a racemic mixture thereof) to grow CNTs across five transition-metal catalysts (Fe, FeMo, and three proportions of CoMo). Multiwavelength Raman spectroscopy on 5,145 spots (5 catalysts, 7 precursors, 3 lasers, and 49 distinct substrate locations on each) determined that acetylene grew the smallest diameter CNTs, while vinylacetylene produced fewer subnanometer CNTs. Though precursor structure did not dictate a uniform chiral shift, it was shown to broaden or narrow chiral distribution, while catalyst structure played a dominant role. In conclusion, this is consistent with metal-precursor binding occurring through unsaturated bonds in the hydrocarbons via the alkyne polymerization mechanism.

Efficient Measurement of Length Distribution of 1D Nanoparticles in Solution via Optical Polarimetry

The efficient measurement of the length distribution of nanotubes, nanowires, and other one-dimensional (1D) nanoparticles in solution is important to enable their incorporation into materials and devices and to optimize their processing for properties of interest, such as thermal/electrical conductivity or mechanical strength, in suspensions and composites. We report an electric-field (E-field)-assisted optical-polarimetry technique to measure the length distribution of ensembles of high-aspect-ratio particles in dilute suspension. The degree of alignment of polarizable 1D particles suspended in a fluid under Brownian motion explicitly depends on the E-field strength and the particle length. We show that it is possible to extract the length distribution of 1D nanoparticles suspended in an insulating fluid by applying a range of E-fields and using optical polarimetry to measure the corresponding alignment order parameter. Notably, the method is relatively insensitive to the diameter of the 1D particles, which can be poorly known or vary within a sample. The technique is validated with silver nanowires and carbon nanotubes of known lengths, as well as polymer-depletion-length-separated single-wall carbon nanotube samples with length distributions independently measured with analytical ultracentrifugation. Finally, we demonstrate the ability of the optical-polarimetry technique to quantify changes in the length distribution of ultranarrow, sub-nanometer-diameter single-wall carbon nanotubes under different types and durations of ultrasonication. Within its range of applicability (polarizable 1D nanoparticles in the 0.5 to 15 μm length range, constrained by the voltage stability of the media and the suspended particles), the E-field-assisted optical-polarimetry method is a particularly efficient and accurate method to measure the length distribution of nanowires and nanotubes in suspension.

Programmable Aggregation of Artificial Cells with DNA Signals

Cell aggregation is a complex behavior, which is closely related to the viability, differentiation, and migration of cells. An effort to create synthetic analogs could lead to considerable advances in cell physiology and biophysics. Rendering and modulating such a dynamic artificial cell system require mechanisms for receiving, transducing, and transmitting intercellular signals, yet effective tools are limited at present. Here we construct synthetic cells from engineered lipids and show their programmable aggregation behaviors using DNA oligonucleotides as a signaling molecule. The artificial cells have transmembrane channels made of DNA origami that are used to recognize and process intercellular signals. We demonstrate that multiple small vesicles aggregate onto a giant vesicle after a transduction of external DNA signals by an intracellular enzyme, and that the small vesicles dissociate when receiving ‘release’ signals. Furthermore, this work provides new possibilities for building synthetic protocells capable of chemical communication and coordination.

Interplay of the forces governing steroid hormone micropollutant adsorption in vertically-aligned carbon nanotube membrane nanopores

Vertically-aligned carbon nanotube (VaCNT) membranes allow water to conduct rapidly at low pressures and open up the possibility for water purification and desalination, although the ultralow viscous stress in hydrophobic and low-tortuosity nanopores prevents surface interactions with contaminants. In this experimental investigation, steroid hormone micropollutant adsorption by VaCNT membranes is quantified and explained via the interplay of the hydrodynamic drag and friction forces acting on the hormone, and the adhesive and repulsive forces between the hormone and the inner carbon nanotube wall. It is concluded that a drag force above 2.2 × 10 —3 pN overcomes the friction force resulting in insignificant adsorption, whereas lowering the drag force from 2.2 × 10 —3 to 4.3 × 10 —4 pN increases the adsorbed mass of hormones from zero to 0.4 ng cm —2 . At a low drag force of 1.6 × 10 —3 pN, the adsorbed mass of four hormones is correlated with the hormone–wall adhesive (van der Waals) force. These findings explain micropollutant adsorption in nanopores via the forces acting on the micropollutant along and perpendicular to the flow, which can be exploited for selectivity.

Variations of organic functional chemistry in carbonaceous matter from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu

Abstract Primordial carbon delivered to the early earth by asteroids and meteorites provided a diverse source of extraterrestrial organics from pre-existing simple organic compounds, complex solar-irradiated macromolecules, and macromolecules from extended hydrothermal processing. Surface regolith collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft from the carbon-rich asteroid 162173 Ryugu present a unique opportunity to untangle the sources and processing history of carbonaceous matter. Here we show carbonaceous grains in Ryugu can be classified into three main populations defined by spectral shape: Highly aromatic (HA), Alkyl-Aromatic (AA), and IOM-like (IL). These carbon populations may be related to primordial chemistry, since C and N isotopic compositions vary between the three groups. Diffuse carbon is occasionally dominated by molecular carbonate preferentially associated with coarse-grained phyllosilicate minerals. Compared to related carbonaceous meteorites, the greater diversity of organic functional chemistry in Ryugu indicate the pristine condition of these asteroid samples.

Incorporation of 16 O-rich anhydrous silicates in the protolith of highly hydrated asteroid Ryugu

The abundant phyllosilicate and carbonate minerals characterizing most of the returned particles from asteroid Ryugu suggest a history of extensive aqueous alteration on its parent body, similar to the rare mineralogically altered, but chemically primitive, CI (Ivuna-type) chondrite meteorites. Particle C0009 differs mineralogically from other Ryugu particles examined so far by containing anhydrous silicates at a level of ~0.5 vol%, and thus can help shed light on the unaltered original materials that constituted Ryugu’s protolith. In situ oxygen isotope measurements of the most Mg-rich olivine and pyroxene in C0009 reveal two populations of Δ 17 O: –25‰ to –15‰ and –8‰ to –3‰. The former and the latter populations correlate well with silicate morphologies similar to those seen in amoeboid olivine aggregates and chondrule phenocrysts, respectively, both of which are abundant in less aqueously altered carbonaceous chondrites. Here, this result also highlights the presence of olivine with Δ 17 O close to the solar value in either a CI chondrite or an asteroid with CI-chondrite characteristics, and provides strong evidence that amoeboid olivine aggregates and Mg-rich chondrules accreted into Ryugu’s protolith. Our data also raise the possibility that the protoliths of CI and other carbonaceous chondrites incorporated similar anhydrous silicates.

Oxygen isotope evidence from Ryugu samples for early water delivery to Earth by CI chondrites

The delivery of water to the inner Solar System, including Earth, is still a debated topic. A preferential role for hydrated asteroids in this process is supported by isotopic measurements. Carbonaceous chondrite (CC) meteorites represent our main source of information about these volatile-rich asteroids. However, the destruction of weaker materials during atmospheric entry creates a bias in our CC data. The return of surface materials from the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft provides a unique opportunity to study high-porosity, low-density, primitive materials, unrepresented in the meteorite record. We measured the bulk oxygen isotope composition from four Ryugu particles and show that they most closely resemble the rare CI (CC Ivuna-type) chondrites, but with some differences that we attribute to the terrestrial contamination of the CI meteorites. We suggest that CI-related material is widespread among carbonaceous asteroids and a more important source of Earth’s water and other volatiles than its limited presence in our meteoritic collection indicates.

Contribution of Ryugu-like material to Earth’s volatile inventory by Cu and Zn isotopic analysis

We report initial analyses showed that asteroid Ryugu’s composition is close to CI (Ivuna-like) carbonaceous chondrites (CCs) – the chemically most primitive meteorites, characterized by near-solar abundances for most elements. However, some isotopic signatures (for example, Ti, Cr) overlap with other CC groups, so the details of the link between Ryugu and the CI chondrites are not yet fully clear. Here we show that Ryugu and CI chondrites have the same zinc and copper isotopic composition. As the various chondrite groups have very distinct Zn and Cu isotopic signatures, our results point at a common genetic heritage between Ryugu and CI chondrites, ruling out any affinity with other CC groups. Since Ryugu’s pristine samples match the solar elemental composition for many elements, their Zn and Cu isotopic compositions likely represent the best estimates of the solar composition. Earth’s mass-independent Zn isotopic composition is intermediate between Ryugu/CC and non-carbonaceous chondrites (NCs), suggesting a contribution of Ryugu-like material to Earth’s budgets of Zn and other moderately volatile elements.

Early fluid activity on Ryugu inferred by isotopic analyses of carbonates and magnetite

Samples from asteroid Ryugu returned by the Hayabusa2 mission contain evidence of extensive alteration by aqueous fluids and appear related to the CI chondrites. To understand the sources of the fluid and the timing of chemical reactions occurring during the alteration processes, we investigated the oxygen, carbon and 53 Mn– 53 Cr systematics of carbonate and magnetite in two Ryugu particles. Here we find that the fluid was initially between 0 and 20 °C and enriched in 13 C, 17 O and 18 O, and subsequently evolved towards lighter carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions as alteration proceeded. Carbonate ages show that this fluid–rock interaction took place within approximately the first 1.8 million years of Solar System history, requiring early accretion either in a planetesimal less than ~20 km in diameter or within a larger body that was disrupted and reassembled.

Insight into multi-step geological evolution of C-type asteroids from Ryugu particles

C-type asteroids are the source of the carbonaceous chondrite meteorites and represent remnants of primitive planetesimals that formed at the outer margins of the early Solar System and may have delivered volatiles to the inner Solar System, in particular the early Earth. However, the nature of carbonaceous chondrites is not well understood owing to terrestrial alteration. Here, in this work, we present the petrology and mineral chemistry of surface materials collected by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Hayabusa2 spacecraft from the C-type asteroid Ryugu. The Ryugu particles we studied are similar to CI (Ivuna-type) chondrites but with some important differences, such as the presence of Na–Mg phosphates and Na-rich phases and the lack of ferrihydrite and gypsum. Ryugu particles experienced several steps of aqueous alteration, metasomatism and brecciation under variable conditions. These materials represent mixed lithologies and formed at different locations within their parent asteroid. The evidence presented here demonstrates that the C-type asteroid Ryugu experienced a complex geologic evolution shortly after its formation.

A history of mild shocks experienced by the regolith particles on hydrated asteroid Ryugu

Micrometeorites, a possible major source of Earth’s water, are thought to form from explosive dispersal of hydrated chondritic materials during impact events on their parental asteroids. However, this provenance and formation mechanism have yet to be directly confirmed using asteroid returned samples. Here, we report evidence of mild shock metamorphism in the surface particles of asteroid Ryugu based on electron microscopy. All particles are dominated by phyllosilicates but lack dehydration textures, which are indicative of shock-heating temperatures below ~500°C. Microfault-like textures associated with extensively shock-deformed framboidal magnetites and a high-pressure polymorph of Fe–Cr–sulfide have been identified. These findings indicate that the average peak pressure was ~2 GPa. The vast majority of ejecta formed during impact on Ryugu-like asteroids would be hydrated materials, larger than a millimetre, originating far from the impact point. These characteristics are inconsistent with current micrometeorite production models, and consequently, a new formation mechanism is required.

Grain boundary zirconia-modified garnet solid-state electrolyte

Here, we report a method for promoting electrochemical stability in garnet Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 solid-state electrolyte based on a composite two-phase oxide–oxide microstructure. Grain boundary precipitation of the controlled distribution of amorphous zirconium oxide microparticles is achieved through the addition of reactive tantalum carbide. During ambient-atmosphere sintering, the carbide decomposes through an in situ reaction, the ‘extra’ Ta substituting for Zr within the Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 lattice. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations identify a thermodynamically favourable reaction path and show how substituting Ta 5+ at Zr 4+ sites affects the crystal structure as well as bulk ionic and electronic conductivities. Quantitative stereology highlights that zirconia also acts as a sintering aid, reducing compact porosity. Cryogenic focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy and fractography analysis of cycled solid-state electrolytes illustrates that near-universally observed intergranular Li-metal dendrite propagation is suppressed by the two-phase microstructure, favouring transgranular dendrites instead. Importantly, DFT demonstrates that compared with the Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 surface, the zirconium oxide surface per se is less electronically conductive and does not trap excess electrons to reduce Li ions. This is a key reason for the substantial improvement in the electrochemical properties over the single-phase baseline.

Regiospecific N -alkyl substitution tunes the molecular packing of high-performance non-fullerene acceptors

The rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) with strong near-infrared absorption has led to remarkably enhanced short-circuit current density (J sc ) values in organic solar cells (OSCs). NFAs based on the benzotriazole (Bz) fused-ring π-core have great potential in delivering both high J sc and decent open-circuit voltage values due to their strong intramolecular charge transfer with reasonably low energy loss. Here in this work, we have designed and synthesized a series of Bz-based NFAs, PN6SBO-4F, AN6SBO-4F and EHN6SEH-4F, via regiospecific N-alkyl engineering based on the high-performance NFA mBzS-4F that was reported previously. The molecular packing of mBzS-4F, AN6SBO-4F, and EHN6SEH-4F single crystals was analyzed using X-ray crystallography in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the correlation between the molecular structure, the charge-transporting properties, and the solar cell performance. Compared with the typical honeycomb single-crystal structure of Y6 derivatives, these NFAs exhibit distinctly different molecular packing patterns. The strong interactions of terminal indanone groups in mBzS-4F and the J-aggregate-like packing in EHN6SEH-4F lead to the formation of ordered 3D networks in single-crystals with channels for efficient charge transport. Consequently, OSCs based on mBzS-4F and EHN6SEH-4F show efficient photon-to-current conversions, achieving the highest power conversion efficiency of 17.48% with a Jsc of 28.83 mA cm -2 .

Galaxy Cruise: Deep Insights into Interacting Galaxies in the Local Universe

Abstract We present the first results from GALAXY CRUISE, a community (or citizen) science project based on data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). The current paradigm of galaxy evolution suggests that galaxies grow hierarchically via mergers, but our observational understanding of the role of mergers is still limited. The data from HSC-SSP are ideally suited to improve our understanding with improved identifications of interacting galaxies thanks to the superb depth and image quality of HSC-SSP. We launched a community science project, GALAXY CRUISE, in 2019 and have collected over two million independent classifications of 20686 galaxies at z < 0.2. We first characterize the accuracy of the participants’ classifications and demonstrate that it surpasses previous studies based on shallower imaging data. We then investigate various aspects of interacting galaxies in detail. We show that there is a clear sign of enhanced activities of super-massive black holes and star formation in interacting galaxies compared to those in isolated galaxies. The enhancement seems particularly strong for galaxies undergoing violent mergers. We also show that the mass growth rate inferred from our results is roughly consistent with the observed evolution of the stellar mass function. The second season of GALAXY CRUISE is currently underway and we conclude with future prospects. We make the morphological classification catalog used in this paper publicly available at the GALAXY CRUISE website, which will be particularly useful for machine-learning applications.
