In Situ Formation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons as an Artificial Hybrid Layer for Lithium Metal Anodes

Nonuniform Li deposition causes dendrites and low Coulombic efficiency (CE), seriously hindering the practical applications of Li metal. Herein, we developed an artificial solid-state interphase (SEI) with planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the surface of Li metal anodes by a facile in situ formation technology. The resultant dihydroxyviolanthron (DHV) layers serve as the protective layer to stabilize the SEI. In addition, the oxygen-containing functional groups in the soft and conformal SEI film can regulate the diffusion and transport of Li ions to homogenize the deposition of Li metal. The artificial SEI significantly improves the CEs and shows superior cyclability of over 1000 h at 4 mAh cm –2 . The LiFePO 4 /Li cell (2.8 mAh cm –2 ) enables a long cyclability for 300 cycles and high CEs of 99.8%. Furthermore, this work offers a new strategy to inhibit Li dendrite growth and enlightens the design on stable SEI for metal anodes.

Optical Bound States in the Continuum Enabled by Magnetic Resonances Coupled to a Mirror

Dielectric metasurfaces made of high refractive index and low optical loss materials have emerged as promising platforms to achieve high-quality factor modes enabling strong light–matter interaction. Bound states in the continuum have shown potential to demonstrate narrow spectral resonances but often require asymmetric geometry and typically feature strong polarization dependence, complicating fabrication and limiting practical applications. Here, we introduce a novel approach for designing high-quality bound states in the continuum using magnetic dipole resonances coupled to a mirror. The resulting metasurface has simple geometric parameters requiring no broken symmetry. To demonstrate the unique features of our photonic platform we show a record-breaking third harmonic generation efficiency from the metasurface benefiting from the strongly enhanced electric field at high-quality resonances. Our approach mitigates the shortcomings of previous platforms with simple geometry enabling facile and large-area fabrication of metasurfaces paving the way for applications in optical sensing, detection, quantum photonics, and nonlinear devices.

Observation of the Fluctuation Spin Hall Effect in a Low-Resistivity Antiferromagnet

The spin Hall effect (SHE) can generate a pure spin current by an electric current, which is promisingly used to electrically control magnetization. To reduce the power consumption of this control, a giant spin Hall angle (SHA) in the SHE is desired in low-resistivity systems for practical applications. Here, critical spin fluctuation near the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition in chromium (Cr) is proven to be an effective mechanism for creating an additional part of the SHE, named the fluctuation spin Hall effect. Further, the SHA is significantly enhanced when the temperature approaches the Néel temperature (T N ) of Cr and has a peak value of -0.36 near T N . This value is higher than the room-temperature value by 153% and leads to a low normalized power consumption among known spin–orbit torque materials. This study demonstrates the critical spin fluctuation as a prospective way to increase the SHA and enriches the AFM material candidates for spin–orbitronic devices.

Infrared Imaging Using Thermally Stable HgTe/CdS Nanocrystals

Transferring nanocrystals (NCs) from the laboratory environment toward practical applications has raised new challenges. HgTe appears as the most spectrally tunable infrared colloidal platform. Its low-temperature synthesis reduces the growth energy cost yet also favors sintering. Once coupled to a read-out circuit, the Joule effect aggregates the particles, leading to a poorly defined optical edge and large dark current. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that CdS shells bring the expected thermal stability (no redshift upon annealing, reduced tendency to form amalgams, and preservation of photoconduction after an atomic layer deposition process). The electronic structure of these confined particles is unveiled using k.p self-consistent simulations showing a significant exciton binding energy of ~ 200 meV. After shelling, the material displays a p-type behavior that favors the generation of photoconductive gain. The latter is then used to increase the external quantum efficiency of an infrared imager, which now reaches 40% while presenting long-term stability.

Numerical Simulation of Light to Heat Conversion by Plasmonic Nanoheaters

Plasmonic nanoparticles are widely recognized as photothermal conversion agents, i.e., nanotransducers or nanoheaters. Translation of these materials into practical applications requires quantitative analyses of their photothermal conversion efficiencies (η). However, the value of η obtained for different materials is dramatically influenced by the experimental setup and method of calculation. Here, we evaluate the most common methods for estimating η (Roper’s and Wang’s) and compare these with numerical estimates using the simulation software ANSYS. Experiments were performed with colloidal gold nanorod solutions suspended in a hanging droplet irradiated by an 808 nm diode laser and monitored by a thermal camera. The ANSYS simulations accounted for both heating and evaporation, providing η values consistent with the Wang method but higher than the Roper approach. This study details methods for estimating the photothermal efficiency and finds ANSYS to be a robust tool where experimental constraints complicate traditional methods.

AuPd Nanoicosahedra: Atomic-Level Surface Modulation for Optimization of Electrocatalytic and Photocatalytic Energy Conversion

Modulation of bimetallic nanocatalysts with atomic precision would allow for significant increases in catalyst activity through the optimization of heteroatomic interplay. In practice, this level of control over homogeneously turning the heteroatomic states in the surface regions of catalysts remains a great challenge for practical applications requiring mass production. In this work, a one-step aqueous strategy for preparation of AuPd nanoicosahedra core–shell structures has been developed. By turning the molar ratio of Au and Pd precursors, the nanoicosahedra could be made with uniform core composition (Pd ~20%) and largely flexible surface compositions (Pd: 20–70%). Under model reactions of electrochemical ethanol oxidation (EOR) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction, the Au 55 Pd 45 surface displayed superior activities. Here, x-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that AuPd nanoicosahedra with Pd-poor surfaces (Au 79 Pd 21 and Au 60 Pd 40 ) maintain Au-like electronic structures while those with Pd-rich surfaces are more Pd-like. The Au 55 Pd 45 surface struck a delicate balance between the two extremes, leading to the optimal Au–Pd interplay for catalytic performance. Overall, the development of a one-step aqueous strategy for atomic-level control over bimetallic nanoparticle surface states is an important milestone for future advances in catalysis. Our findings in atomic-scale catalyst design will bring deep insights into the fields of nanosynthesis and heterogeneous catalysis, which will be beneficial for further scientific breakthroughs.

Long-Term Cycling of a Mn-Rich High-Voltage Spinel Cathode by Stabilizing the Surface with a Small Dose of Iron

The high-voltage, cobalt-free spinel cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is receiving extensive attention for lithium-ion batteries due to its low cost, high operating voltage and energy density, superior power density, and good thermal stability. However, its high operating voltage hampers its stability with commercial electrolytes and makes its practical viability challenging. We present here a Mn-rich LNMO cathode to encourage the disordering of Mn and Ni in the lattice and the incorporation of a small dose of Fe into Mn-rich LNMO (Fe-LNMO) to improve the cycling stability. The introduction of Fe further increases the cation disorder between Mn and Ni, thus enabling a better rate capability. Electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis indicates that Fe is concentrated on the surface, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that Fe-LNMO alleviates the aggressive reaction between the cathode surface and the electrolyte, thus stabilizing the interface and cycle life. Furthermore, a full cell assembled with a graphite anode with an areal capacity of 3 mA h cm –2 displays a capacity retention of 90% over 300 cycles. Furthermore, the present work demonstrates an effective way to promote cation disordering and lower the surface reactivity of LNMO with the electrolyte, thereby enhancing the conductivity, stabilizing the cathode–electrolyte interphase, and making LNMO promising for practical applications.

Insights into Chemical Prelithiation of SiO x /Graphite Composite Anodes through Scanning Electron Microscope Imaging

Initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) is critical for determining the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used for practical applications; however, it is typically disregarded in anode research. We used SiO x and graphite composite anodes for commercial lithium-ion batteries in our preliminary research to achieve a balance between ICE, capacity, and cycling life. ICE reached 88%; however, it needs further improvement for commercial applications. Prelithiation is a process that involves the introduction of extra lithium ions into LIBs during their manufacturing to enhance the overall performance of the LIBs. We applied a chemical prelithiation method on our SiO x /graphite composite anodes, which comprised 95 wt % of the active material mass loading on the electrode. The ICE increased from 88% to 98% using an aryllithium reagent impregnation method within 2 min of prelithiation. The anode’s specific capacity density, rate, and cycle performance also significantly improved. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging enhanced by an osmium tetroxide staining method indicated that the P-anode contained a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer after the prelithiation process and cycling electrochemical test. The P-anode’s stable charge differential peak over 500 cycles also showcases a robust artificial SEI layer that was generated by the prelithiation procedure. Here, this prelithiation process has significant potential for adoption in the LIB industry’s current electrode manufacturing process.

The solar absorptance of a thermal receiver surface significantly affects the photothermal conversion efficiency of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. The stability of solar receivers and coatings applied to improve solar absorptance at high temperatures is critical for efficient and long-term operation. This study analyzes the high-temperature air stability of multiscale fractal textured electrodeposited copper manganese oxide and copper cobalt oxide solar receiver coatings over a range of temperatures. The study also investigates the effect of high temperature on phase stability, chemical and morphological evolution, and the optical properties of the two solar absorber materials. A computational model is developed to determine the absorptance of the textured absorbers and is shown to match the experimental measurements closely over a range of heat treatment temperatures from 450 °C to 850 °C and durations up to 100 h. Degradation curves and coating stability maps are developed from the study. Copper manganese oxide and copper cobalt oxide coatings exhibit good thermal stability up to ~815 °C and 630 °C, respectively, with minimal changes in their optical and structural properties with thermal efficiency greater than 90%. Furthermore, the study offers valuable insights into the high-temperature annealing effects on the optical and structural properties of multiscale copper alloyed coatings fabricated by electrodeposition and presents a means of designing the optimal temperature range for maximizing absorber efficiency in practical applications.

Unveiling Morphology and Crystallinity Dynamics in Ni x Mn 1– x CO 3 Cathode Precursors through Batch-Mode Coprecipitation

This study delves into the synthesis and control of Ni x Mn 1–x CO 3 , a critical class of Mn-rich, Co-free precursors vital for cathode-oxide materials in energy storage and conversion technologies. Employing batch-mode coprecipitation, we systematically generated samples with varying Ni concentrations (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9) and conducted a comprehensive analysis of their compositions, crystallinities, transition-metal distributions, and particle morphologies through both experimental and computational methods. A significant variation in particle size and crystallinity was observed, contingent on the Ni content. Further, a pivotal transition emerged at Ni concentrations above x = ~0.5, transforming uniform morphologies, such as spherical, monodisperse, pseudo-single-crystalline particles, into bimodal, polycrystalline structures. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of Ni–ammonia complexes leading to Ni-deficient precipitates and underscores the importance of ammonia concentration in achieving precise Ni content control. This study unveils critical reaction conditions governing Mn-rich precursor properties that are vital for cathode-oxides, emphasizing the need for meticulous synthetic control and offering the potential for practical applications in advanced energy storage and conversion systems.

Multinonmetal-Doped V 2 O 5 Nanocomposites for Lithium-Ion Battery Cathodes

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are critical for portable electronics and electric vehicles, demanding higher energy density to meet increasing energy storage needs. Current commercial cathode materials, such as LiFePO 4 and LiCoO 2 , are limited by a single electron transfer, restricting their energy density. Vanadium pentoxide (V 2 O 5 ) emerges as a promising high-capacity cathode due to its high theoretical capacity of 443 mA h g –1 with three Li storage capacities, significantly surpassing conventional materials. However, the practical application of V 2 O 5 is hindered by a large structural evolution and rapid capacity fading during full lithium intercalation. Here, this study introduces a multinonmetal doping (MNM) strategy to enhance V 2 O 5 cathodes by incorporating all-nonmetal dopants (B, P, and Si) and graphene (G). MNM-V 2 O 5 -G exhibits increased surface oxygen defects, improving charge transfer kinetics and thus enhancing the rate performance and cycling stability. Our results provide valuable insights into the role of surface oxygen defects in stabilizing V 2 O 5 with element doping. This research highlights the potential of multinonmetal doping to improve LIB cathode materials, offering a promising pathway for design of high-energy-density V 2 O 5 cathodes and advancing the development of next-generation energy storage solutions.

Quaternary Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Fe, Mn) Anodes for Li-Ion Batteries

Developing high-capacity and fast-charging anode materials is critical for achieving high-performance Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, polycrystalline quaternary transition metal silicon sulfides, Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Fe, Mn), were synthesized using a solid-state method and investigated as anode materials in LIBs. Cu 2 FeSiS 4 retains a reversible capacity of 670 mAh g –1 at 200 mA g –1 for 400 cycles, while Cu 2 MnSiS 4 suffers from a fast capacity loss in the initial 50 cycles. More importantly, Cu 2 FeSiS 4 can maintain a reversible capacity of 379 mAh g –1 after 700 cycles at a high current density of 2 A g –1 , demonstrating high cyclic stability and fast-charging capacity. To further understand the structure degradation and phase transformation, we investigated the postcycling electrodes using multiple techniques, including the scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The results indicated that Cu 2 FeSiS 4 undergoes reversible phase transitions with Li 2 S as a major product component. To further assess the performance for practical applications, Cu 2 FeSiS 4 was coupled with LiFePO 4 to make LiFePO 4 ||Cu 2 FeSiS 4 full cells, which delivered superior electrochemical performance. These results demonstrate great promise for using quaternary transition metal silicon sulfides as anodes to achieve low-cost and sustainable LIBs.

Benchmarking Density Functional Theory Methods for Efficient Calculations of a Strongly Correlated Li 1– x Ni 1– y O 2−δ System

Transition metal oxides (TMOs), such as LiNiO 2 , are promising candidates for energy storage and electronic devices due to their unique electronic properties, exceptional physical and chemical characteristics, and ability to adopt multiple oxidation states. However, accurately predicting their properties using mean-field density functional theory (DFT) is challenging due to the presence of strongly correlated d-electrons and the complex interplay between their structural, electronic, and magnetic responses. These challenges are further exacerbated by the need to model defects, surfaces, and interfaces, which require computationally efficient, large-scale simulations. To address these issues, we carry out a benchmark study on the Li 1–x NiO 2 system, evaluating the performance of several popular functionals. Our findings demonstrate that combining SCAN functional relaxation with single-step HSE calculations provides a practical and scalable computational strategy. This approach balances accuracy and efficiency, enabling high-throughput simulations of strongly correlated TMOs and improved predictive modeling capability of TMOs for practical applications.

Unveiling the lithium-ion transport mechanism in Li{sub 2}ZrCl{sub 6} Solid-State Electrolyte {ital via} deep learning-accelerated molecular dynamics simulations.

Lithium zirconium chlorides (LZCs) present a promising class of cost-effective solid electrolytes for next-generation all-solid-state batteries. The unique crystal structure of LZCs plays a crucial role in facilitating lithium-ion mobility, which further affects the electrochemical performance. To understand the underlying mechanism governing ion transport, we employed deep learning-accelerated molecular dynamics simulation on Li2ZrCl6 (trigonal alpha- and monoclinic beta-LZC), focusing specifically on the zirconium coordination environment. Our results reveal that disordered alpha-LZC exhibits the highest ionic conductivity, while beta-LZC demonstrates significantly lower conductivity, closely aligning with experimental findings. The study confirms that across all phases, lithium migration proceeds via the site-to-site hopping mechanism, where variations in site residence times critically impact the overall ionic conductivity. In alpha-LZCs, lithium ions prefer to anisotropically diffuse across interlayers as the result of a lower energy barrier, driven primarily by collective diffusion. In contrast, lithium ions in beta-LZC primarily isotropically diffuse within the intralayer, hindered by higher energy barriers and determined by individual diffusion. The variation in ZrCl6 2- octahedral unit softening, induced by the specific layered arrangement of zirconium atoms, emerges as a critical determinant of the energy barriers across the LZC phases. These atomic-scale insights into the transport processes provide valuable guidance for the rational design and optimization of LZCs-based electrolytes, accelerating their practical application in advanced energy storage technologies.

Strategic Melamine Coating on Lithium Metal for Li 3 N-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase and Improved Battery Cycling Stability

The practical applications of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are limited by challenges such as dendrite formation and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), especially at higher C-rates. Here, this study introduces melamine-coated Li metal anodes (LMAs), forming a Li 3 N-rich SEI layer that improves ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The optimized melamine-coated LMA demonstrated uniform coverage resulting in denser Li deposition, nearly doubled cycle life (~148 cycles at 0.5 C, 1C = 4.1 mA cm -2 ), compared to Bare-Li. These findings emphasize that coating materials-induced beneficial SEI components could lead to improvement of LMB performance.

CeTi 2 O 6 —A Promising Oxide for Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Production

A large entropy of reduction is crucial in achieving materials capable of high-efficiency solar thermochemical hydrogen (STCH) production through two-step thermochemical water splitting cycles. We have recently demonstrated that the onsite electronic entropy of reduction attains an extreme value of 4.26 kB at 1500 K in Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ redox reactions, which explains the high performance and uniqueness of CeO 2 as an archetypal STCH material. However, ceria requires high temperatures (T > 1500 °C) to achieve a reasonable reduction extent because of its large reduction enthalpy, which is a major obstacle in practical applications. Therefore, new materials with a large entropy of reduction and lower reduction enthalpy are required. Here, we perform a systematic screening to search for Ce 4+ -based oxides which possess thermodynamics superior to CeO 2 for STCH production. We first search the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) and literature for Ce 4+ -based oxides and subsequently use density functional theory to compute their reduction enthalpies (i.e., oxygen vacancy formation energies). Here, we find that CeTi 2 O 6 with the brannerite structure is the most promising candidate for STCH because it possesses three essential characteristics of an STCH material: (i) a smaller reduction enthalpy compared to ceria yet large enough to split water, (ii) a high thermal stability, as reported experimentally, and (iii) a large entropy of reduction associated with Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ redox. Our proposed design strategy suggests that further exploration of Ce 4+ oxides for STCH production is warranted.

Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions in Hybrid Aqueous/Nonaqueous Electrolytes Enable Low-Cost and Long-Lifespan Sodium-Ion Storage

Although “water-in-salt” electrolytes have opened a new pathway to expand the electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes, the electrode instability and irreversible proton co-insertion caused by aqueous media still hinder the practical application, even when using exotic fluorinated salts. In this study, an accessible hybrid electrolyte class based on common sodium salts is proposed, and crucially an ethanol-rich media is introduced to achieve highly stable Na-ion electrochemistry. Here, ethanol exerts a strong hydrogen-bonding effect on water, simultaneously expanding the electrochemical stability window of the hybridized electrolyte to 2.5 V, restricting degradation activities, reducing transition metal dissolution from the cathode material, and improving electrolyte–electrode wettability. The binary ethanol–water solvent enables the impressive cycling of sodium-ion batteries based on perchlorate, chloride, and acetate electrolyte salts. Notably, a Na 0.44 MnO 2 electrode exhibits both high capacity (81 mAh g –1 ) and a remarkably long cycle life >1000 cycles at 100 mA g –1 (a capacity decay rate per cycle of 0.024%) in a 1 M sodium acetate system. The Na 0.44 MnO 2 /Zn full cells also show excellent cycling stability and rate capability in a wide temperature range. The gained understanding of the hydrogen-bonding interactions in the hybridized electrolyte can provide new battery chemistry guidelines in designing promising candidates for developing low-cost and long-lifespan batteries based on other (Li + , K + , Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Al 3+ ) systems.

Fluorescence Enhancement in the Solid State by Isolating Perylene Fluorophores in Metal–Organic Frameworks

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as perylene, pyrene, and their derivatives are highly emissive fluorophores in solution. Furthermore, the practical applications of these materials in the field of molecular electronic and light emitting devices are often hindered by self-quenching effects due to the formation of non-fluorescent aggregates in concentrated solutions or in the solid state. Herein, we demonstrate that aggregation caused quenching of perylenes can be minimalized by molecular incorporation into metalorganic frameworks (MOFs). This study utilized a stable Zr 6 cluster-based MOF, UiO-67, as a matrix. Linear linkers containing the photo-responsive moieties were designed and incorporated into the parent UiO-67 scaffold through the partially replacement of the non-fluorescent linkers of a similar length, forming mixed-linker MOFs. Here, the average distance between perylene moieties was tuned by changing the linker ratios, thus controlling the fluorescence intensity, emission wavelength, and quantum yield. Molecular modeling was further adopted to correlate the number of isolated perylene linkers within the framework to the ratio between the two linkers, therefore rationalizing the change in the observed fluorescent properties. Taking advantage of the tunable fluorescence, inherent porosity, and high chemical stability of this MOF platform, it was applied as a fluorescent sensor for oxygen detection in the gas phase, a model reaction, showing fast response and good recyclability.
