Spatio-spectral quantum state estimation of photon pairs from optical fiber using stimulated emission

Developing a quantum light source that carries more than one bit per photon is pivotal for expanding quantum information applications. Characterizing a high-dimensional multiple-degree-of-freedom source at the single-photon level is challenging due to the large parameter space as well as limited emission rates and detection efficiencies. Here, we characterize photon pairs generated in optical fiber in the transverse-mode and frequency degrees of freedom by applying stimulated emission in both degrees of freedom while detecting in one of them at a time. This method may be useful in the quantum state estimation and optimization of various photon-pair source platforms in which complicated correlations across multiple degrees of freedom may be present.

Structural aging of human neurons is opposite of the changes in schizophrenia

Human mentality develops with age and is altered in psychiatric disorders, though their underlying mechanism is unknown. In this study, we analyzed nanometer-scale three-dimensional structures of brain tissues of the anterior cingulate cortex from eight schizophrenia and eight control cases. The distribution profiles of neurite curvature of the control cases showed a trend depending on their age, resulting in an age-correlated decrease in the standard deviation of neurite curvature (Pearson’s r = -0.80, p = 0.018). In contrast to the control cases, the schizophrenia cases deviate upward from this correlation, exhibiting a 60% higher neurite curvature compared with the controls (p = 7.8 × 10 -4 ). The neurite curvature also showed a correlation with a hallucination score (Pearson’s r = 0.80, p = 1.8 × 10 -4 ), indicating that neurite structure is relevant to brain function. This report is based on our 3D analysis of human brain tissues over a decade and is unprecedented in terms of the number of cases. We suggest that neurite curvature plays a pivotal role in brain aging and can be used as a hallmark to exploit a novel treatment of schizophrenia.

Pressurized DNA state inside herpes capsids—A novel antiviral target

Drug resistance in viruses represents one of the major challenges of healthcare. As part of an effort to provide a treatment that avoids the possibility of drug resistance, we discovered a novel mechanism of action (MOA) and specific compounds to treat all nine human herpesviruses and animal herpesviruses. The novel MOA targets the pressurized genome state in a viral capsid, “turns off” capsid pressure, and blocks viral genome ejection into a cell nucleus, preventing viral replication. This work serves as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the feasibility of a new antiviral target—suppressing pressure-driven viral genome ejection —that is likely impervious to developing drug resistance. This pivotal finding presents a platform for discovery of a new class of broad-spectrum treatments for herpesviruses and other viral infections with genome-pressure-dependent replication. A biophysical approach to antiviral treatment such as this is also a vital strategy to prevent the spread of emerging viruses where vaccine development is challenged by high mutation rates or other evasion mechanisms.

Strategic styles of hardware product development could accelerate commercialization in cleantech startups

Hardware-based startups risk having longer times-to-market, deterring investment in the clean technologies that are critical to a sustainable future. We interviewed 55 leaders at hardware startups, 20 of which are cleantech, mapped their development timelines, and found prototyping to be the longest development step (median of 19 weeks per prototype) regardless of prototype complexity or iteration. Qualitative interview analysis reveals the prototyping team’s choice of development style is a major factor affecting timeline. We define two development styles: natural and structured, typified by free-form exploration and rule-based execution, respectively. On average, natural development takes 35% less time than structured, and is thus preferred for early iterations, but adopting structure at strategic points is needed for timely commercialization. Critical points of transition to a structured style include adding new team members or engaging external partners, which demand clear communication and expectations. When pivoting to a new product or market, returning to a natural style is beneficial.

Active analog tuning of the phase of light in the visible regime by bismuth-based metamaterials

The active and analog tuning of the phase of light by metamaterials is needed to boost the switching performance of photonic devices. However, demonstrations of this type of tuning in the pivotal visible spectral region are still scarce. Herein, we report the active analog tuning of the phase of visible light reflected by a bismuth (Bi)-based metamaterial, enabled by a reversible solid-liquid transition. This metamaterial, fabricated by following a lithography-free approach, consists of twodimensional assemblies of polydisperse plasmonic Bi nanostructures embedded in a refractory and transparent aluminum oxide matrix. The analog tuning of the phase is achieved by the controlled heating of the metamaterial to melt a fraction of the nanostructures. A maximum tuning of 320° (1.8 π) is observed upon the complete melting of the nanostructures at 230°C. This tuning is reversible by cooling to 25°C. In addition, it presents a wide hysteretic character due to liquid Bi undercooling. This enables the phase achieved by this analog approach to remain stable over a broad temperature range upon cooling and until resolidification occurs around 100°C. Therefore, Bi-based metamaterials are endowed with analog optical memory capabilities, which are appealing for a wide range of applications, including optical data storage with enhanced information density or bistable photonic switching with a tunable “on” state.

FOSWEC v2: System identification and control testing at Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory

This report summarizes the design and execution of a wave tank test of the floating oscillating surge wave energy converter (FOSWEC) in the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory Directional Wave Basin at Oregon State University. This device, which uses two "flaps" that pivot about a central platform when excited by waves, has a natural frequency within the range of the waves by which it is excited. The FOSWEC was originally considered to be a 1:33 scale device, however, for the current tests, no fixed relative scale is used (i.e., the WEC is considered to be scaled for the basin’s wave environment in which it operates). The primary goal of this test was to assess the degree to which previously developed modeling, experimentation, and control design methods could be applied to a broad range of wave energy converter designs. Testing was conducted to identify a dynamic model for the impedance and excitation behavior of the device. Using these models, a series of closed loop tests were conducted using a causal impedance matching controller. This report provides a brief description of the results, as well as a summary of the device and experimental design. The results show that the methods applied to this experimental device perform well and should be broadly applicable. The data collected during testing is compressed into FOSWEC.zip. Please refer to Appendix C (pages 61-63) of the test report for descriptions of each test ID corresponding to the compressed files.

TEAMER: FOSWEC Mooring Modeling and Analysis, Post Access Report and Data

Floating oscillating surge wave energy converters (FOSWECs) offer several advantages over bottom-hinged oscillating surge wave energy converters, including large wave potential at deep-water sites with fewer permitting and environmental concerns outside territorial waters. As a team, Stevens Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech and Resolute Marine Energy are designing a 100 kW FOSWEC with DOE support (2020-2021) for the PacWave test site "PacWave". The proposed FOSWEC consists of a floating platform, two pivoting flaps, and an innovative power-take-off (PTO). The distance between the two flaps is around half the typical wavelength, resulting in out-of-phase motion and a reduction in motion of the frame and mooring loads. The overall goal of the project is to design, build, deploy and analyze a 1:2 scale (100-kW annual averaged electrical power output) device with reduced levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and peak-to-average power ratio, through the co-design and control of the PTO, WEC, and floating platform. This submission includes a Post Access Report and data for the project of Mooring Modeling and Analysis for Floating Oscillating Surge Wave Energy Converter that Powers Marine Aquaculture of RFTS2 (request for technical support). The data are used to generate all figures in the Post Access Report. Project was a collaboration between Virginia Tech and the National Renewable Energy Lab, with funding from TEAMER.

In operando neutron imaging characterizations of all-solid-state batteries

The surge in electric vehicle demand has propagated the extensive application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in recent years. Gaining significant traction due to their promising high-energy density and elevated safety over traditional LIBs, all-solid-state Li batteries (ASLBs) have nonetheless been faced with hurdles relating to battery performance. These include concerns with interfacial compatibility, structural stability, Li dendrite inhibition, and large-scale manufacturing. To tackle these issues, it is necessary to employ advanced characterization methods to comprehend the intrinsic mechanisms within ASLBs. In this article, we advocate for the use of neutron imaging as a nondestructive approach for the operando visualization of ASLBs. We draw comparisons with other operando visualization strategies, underline the benefits of neutron imaging, and discuss its potential applicability in the scrutiny of all-solid-state Li metal batteries and all-solid-state Li-sulfur batteries. Neutron imaging provides valuable insights into the dynamics of Li concentration, reaction mechanisms, and transport constraints in ASLBs. These insights are pivotal in contributing to the evolution of high-performance all-solid-state batteries.

Recent progress on understanding the temperature-dependent irradiation resistance ranking among NiFe, NiCoCr, and NiCoFeCr alloys: A review

Systematic temperature-effects investigations on damage evolution in ion-irradiated Ni-based concentrated solid-solution alloys (CSAs) are pivotal to provide reliance on their use in nuclear applications. Here, in search of the origin behind the temperature-dependent irradiation resistance ranking among equiatomic NiFe, NiCoCr and NiCoFeCr alloys, we have compared, previously experimental and theoretical published data involving ion irradiation experiments performed on these alloys with new ion channeling results from ion-irradiated NiCoFeCr at 500 K. Moreover, the current results are compared with independent theoretical calculations and relevant TEM results from literature, which allow us to suggest that the lower migration energy of vacancies in NiCoCr, as compared with those in NiFe and NiCoFeCr, is the reason behind why NiCoCr is no longer outperforming NiFe under ion irradiation above 300 K.

A brief review on strain engineering of ferroelectric K x Na 1- x NbO 3 epitaxial thin films: Insights from phase-field simulations

Strains play a pivotal role in determining the phase equilibrium, domain configuration, and functional properties of the low-dimensional ferroelectrics. There is growing interest in the strain engineering of ferroelectric K x Na 1- x NbO 3 (KNN) epitaxial thin films, which exhibit excellent physical properties and promise as eco-friendly alternatives to lead-based ferroelectrics for microdevice applications. Further, advances have been made in understanding the phase equilibria and transitions, domains and domain walls, and their relations to the physical properties of KNN epitaxial thin films using a combination of experiments and theoretical modeling, particularly phase-field simulations. Here, we review recent progress in these aspects and showcase the phase-field method for establishing strain phase diagrams, elucidating the domain and domain wall structures at equilibrium, and predicting the structure–property relationships in ferroelectric KNN thin films. We also discuss challenges and opportunities to further advance our understanding of KNN thin films and potentially unlock new functionalities by leveraging phase-field simulations.

Machine-learning interatomic potentials for interfaces in all-solid-state batteries: Perspectives on training data, model selection, and validation

Interfaces play a pivotal role in dictating the performance and reliability of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), where complex electro-chemo-mechanical phenomena at grain boundaries (GBs) and interfaces can lead to degradation and failure. Traditional atomistic simulation methods, such as first-principles calculations and classical molecular dynamics, face limitations in modeling these interfaces due to either high computational cost or insufficient transferability to the diverse atomic environments evolving at interfaces. Machine-learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have emerged as a transformative approach, enabling large-scale, high-accuracy simulations of disordered and chemically complex systems by leveraging the predictability of machine learning models trained on first-principles data. Recent applications of MLIPs have demonstrated their ability to capture intricate behaviors at ASSB interfaces, including ion transport, interfacial evolution, and degradation mechanisms, with accuracy and efficiency unattainable by conventional methods. This prospective paper presents comprehensive analysis and practical guidance for MLIP development for GBs and interfaces in ASSBs, with a focus on three key pillars: data generation, model selection, and validation. Here, we review the current state of MLIP applications for GBs and interfaces in both general and ASSB-specific materials, highlighting best practices and challenges in constructing diverse and representative datasets, choosing appropriate machine learning architectures, and rigorously validating model performance. We also discuss emerging strategies and opportunities for improved reliability and efficiency of MLIPs to simulate realistic interfaces in ASSBs.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-Ne1 Mead - irrigated continuous maize site

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-Ne1 Mead - irrigated continuous maize site. This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-Ne1 Mead - irrigated continuous maize site produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The study site is one of three fields (all located within 1.6 km of each other) at the University of Nebraska Eastern Nebraska Research, Education and Extension Center near Mead, Nebraska. This site is irrigated with a center pivot system. Prior to the initiation of the study, the irrigated site had a 10-yr history of maize-soybean rotation under no-till. A tillage operation (disking) was done just prior to the 2001 planting to homogenize the top 0.1 m of soil, incorporate P and K fertilizers, as well as previously accumulated surface residues. This field was planted with maize every growing season. Since the 2001 tillage operation, the site has been under no-till management until the harvest of 2005. Following harvest, a conservation-plow tillage operation was initiated where a small amount of N fertilizer is sprayed on the residue immediately prior to the plow operation. Approximately 1/3 of the crop residue is left on the surface. The post-harvest conservation-plow operation continued until 2022. Since 2022, the site management has changed such that the field is now a strictly no-till, maize-soybean rotation (maize odd years and soybean even years).
