The 8 second optical quasi-periodic oscillations in GX 339 - 4

Submillisecond optical photometry of the black hole candidate GX 339 - 4 was obtained on August 1, 1989, (UT) using the 1.5 m telescope of the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Eight second quasi-periodic oscillations of width 0.02-0.04 Hz and root mean square amplitude 4-6 percent are found. The visual magnitude of GX 339 - 4 at the beginning of the observation was m(v) = 17.7. Motch et al. (1985) have previously reported 7 s optical quasi-periodic oscillations when GX 339 - 4 was also m(v) = 17.7 and in an X-ray off-state. No X-ray observations were made during the present optical observations and so the X-ray state of GX 339 - 4 cannot be ascertained. In addition, Motch et al. have also reported 20 s optical quasi-periodic oscillations with 30-40 percent full amplitude but when GX 339 - 4 was much brighter, m(v) = 15.4, and in a hard X-ray state.

Intraseasonal oscillation of convective activity in the tropical Southern Hemisphere - May 1984-April 1986

This paper studies the intraseasonal oscillation of convection and related variables in the Southern Hemisphere tropics utilizing European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts analyses of 1984 to 1986. One aspect of the research was that the original, unfiltered, time series of various variables was first analyzed to determine if a statistically significant signal occurred on the intraseasonal time scale. The analysis showed that two variables, outgoing longwave radiation and velocity potential at 200 hPa, provided the best evidence of an intraseasonal oscillation. The oscillation propagated eastward, and the convective activity for both years was more intense over the Indian Ocean-Indonesia-western Pacific region than elsewhere.

Subpicosecond time-resolved studies of coherent phonon oscillations in thin-film YBa2Cu3O(6+x) (x less than 0.4)

The results are reported of the first time-resolved observation of impulsively generated coherent optical phonon oscillations in the semiconducting cuprate compound YBa2Cu3O(6+x ) (x less than 0.4). The oscillations, which were probed through time-resolved transmissivity modulation, had a period of 237 fsec at room temperature, corresponding to a Raman active mode at A(1g) symmetry at 142/cm. No oscillations were observed in the superconducting form of Y-Ba-Cu-O either above or below Tc. The amplitude, frequency, and linewidth of this mode were measured over a temperature range from about 7 K to room temperature.

Resonant-tunnelling diode oscillator using a slot-coupled quasioptical open resonator

A resonant-tunneling diode has oscillated at X-band frequencies in a microwave circuit consisting of a slot antenna coupled to a semiconfocal open resonator. Coupling between the open resonator and the slot oscillator improves the noise-to-carrier ratio by about 36 dB relative to that of the slot oscillator alone in the 100-200 kHz range. A circuit operating near 10 GHz has been designed as a scale model for millimeter- and submillimeter-wave applications.

Relation between the quasi-periodic oscillations and the low-frequency noise of GX 5-1 in the horizontal branch

Ginga observations of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and the low-frequency noise (LFN) from GX 5-1 in its horizontal-branch spectral state are presented. Power spectral fits were attempted using model functions based on simple oscillating shot models. A clear second-harmonic peak of QPO was detected. Variations in the powers of QPO and LFN on timescales of 8-256 s were also studied. These variations were significant for all of the timescales studied, and were uncorrelated with each other on timescales shorter than a few tens of seconds, and correlated on longer timescales. From simulations based on a simple shot model, it was found that the variation amplitude and the lack of correlation on short timescales are not inconsistent with the oscillating shot models. A more complex model is necessary to fully explain the observed properties.

Oscillations up to 712 GHz in InAs/AlSb resonant-tunneling diodes

Oscillations have been obtained at frequencies from 100 to 712 GHz in InAs/AlSb double-barrier resonant-tunneling diodes at room temperature. The measured power density at 360 GHz was 90 W/sq cm, which is 50 times that generated by GaAs/AlAs diodes at essentially the same frequency. The oscillation at 712 GHz represents the highest frequency reported to date from a solid-state electronic oscillator at room temperature.

Noise-driven radiative shocks - A new model for the optical quasi-periodic oscillations of the AM Herculis objects

A model for the 0.3-1.2 Hz optical quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in a number of AM Her-type binary systems has been developed. It is suggested that the observed optical modulation is the result of shock oscillations induced by nonsteady accretion flows. It is shown that time-dependent models of radiative shock waves in nonsteady accretion flows onto magnetic white dwarfs with mass 0.6 solar mass and magnetic field strength of 30 MG can produce optical QPOs similar to those observed in the AM Her objects. Theoretical calculations have shown that oscillations cannot be sustained for these white dwarf parameters when the accretion rate is constant.

A receiver design for the superconducting cavity-maser oscillator

A new frequency standard was demonstrated with the aid of a double phase locked loop (PLL) receiver. A superconducting cavity maser oscillator (SCMO) and a hydrogen maser are combined to show the medium term performance of the hydrogen maser together with improved short term performance made possible by the SCMO. The receiver, which generates a 100 MHz signal with reduced noise, is phase locked to (and may be used in place of) the 100 MHz hydrogen maser output. The maser signal, 2.69xxx-GHz SCMO output, and a 100 MHz quartz crystal oscillator are optimally combined by the receiver. A measured two source fractional frequency stability of 2 x 10(exp -14) was obtained for a measuring time of r = 1 sec, and 1 x 10(exp -15) at r = 1,000 sec. The 1 sec value is approx. 10 times lower than that for hydrogen masers, while the 1,000 sec value is identical to hydrogen maser performance. The design is based on phase noise models for the hydrogen maser, the SCMO, and quartz crystal oscillators for offset frequencies down to 1 x 10(exp -6) Hz.

Planar dielectric resonator stabilized HEMT oscillator integrated with CPW/aperture coupled patch antenna

A new design of an active antenna with a dielectric resonator stabilized high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) oscillator (DRO) and an aperture-coupled patch antenna is reported. The circuit is fabricated using coplanar waveguide (CPW) with the oscillator and the antenna on opposite sides of the substrate. The active antenna was demonstrated at 7.6 GHz; however, the design can be scaled to higher frequencies. Excellent oscillator characteristics and radiation patterns were obtained.

Galactic oscillations

Long-lived oscillations that act like normal modes are described. The total kinetic energy is found to vary with time by amounts far in excess of the fluctuations expected from the virial theorem, and the variation shows periodic patterns that suggest oscillations. Experimental results indicate that oscillation amplitudes depend on the nature of the model. It is noted that it is difficult to answer questions about likely amplitudes in real galaxies with any confidence at the present time.

A quasioptically stabilized resonant-tunneling-diode oscillator for the millimeter- and submillimeter-wave regions

A semiconfocal open-cavity resonator has been used to stabilize a resonant-tunneling-diode waveguide oscillator at frequencies near 100 GHz. The high quality factor of the open cavity resulted in a linewidth of approximately 10 kHz at 10 dB below the peak, which is about 100 times narrower than the linewidth of an unstabilized waveguide oscillator. This technique is well suited for resonant-tunneling-diode oscillators in the submillimeter-wave region.

A theoretical and experimental study of the noise behavior of subharmonically injection locked local oscillators

A method for the noise characterization of optically controlled subharmonically injection-locked oscillators is presented. Based on a nonlinear model of synchronized oscillators, this method is used to formulate a general expression for phase noise calculation, so that FM noise degradation of a subharmonically synchronized LO at large-signal levels can be predicted easily and accurately. Experimental results of FM noise measurement of an oscillator confirmed the accuracy of the analysis.

Enhancement of Shubnikov-de Haas Oscillations by Carrier Modulation

A novel technique for drastically enhancing the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) pattern of oscillatory magnetoresistance is presented. The technique is based on measuring the change in the magnetoresistance due to a carrier generated by a modulated light source. The technique also has the important property of selectively increasing the amplitude of the slower oscillations due to carriers in the second subband much more than oscillations generated by the ground subband electrons. Very clear oscillations generated by a carrier concentration well below 5 x 10 exp 10/sq cm were recorded using the technique.

Experimental unsteady pressures on an oscillating cascade with supersonic leading edge locus

The first experimental data for an oscillating cascade with a supersonic leading edge locus (SLEL) at zero stagger angle is presented which were obtained in the NASA/OSU supersonic oscillating cascade facility. Reduced frequencies from .093 to .146, based on half chord were investigated. An influence coefficient technique for a linear oscillating cascade with constant interblade phase angle has been extended to a cascade with a SLEL.

The detection and characterization of high frequency and high wavenumber solar oscillations

Doppler shift measurements of the Na D(sub 1) absorption line have revealed solar oscillations in a new regime of frequency and wavenumber. Oscillations of vertical velocities in the temperature minimum and low chromosphere of the Sun are observed with frequencies ranging up to 9.5 mHz. There is no evidence for chromospheric modes of 3 minute period. This indicates that the chromosphere does not form a good cavity for acoustic waves. The fundamental-modes appear with wavenumbers up to 5.57 M per m (equivalent spherical harmonic degree, 3877). The frequencies lie below the predicted values at wavenumbers above 1 M per m. The values are in agreement with previous measurements that exist for wavenumbers up to 2.67 M per m. Spatial maps of velocity power show that high wavenumber oscillations are suppressed in active regions. The shape of the power depression indicates that wave motion is affected in the layer of atmosphere where the measurement is made. The f-modes are suppressed in the same way as p-modes, indicating that the mechanism for wave suppression affects velocity fluctuations. Mode frequencies are not affected by the magnetic fields by more than 50 micro Hz, the precision of the measurement.

Workshop on Harmonic Oscillators

Proceedings of a workshop on Harmonic Oscillators held at the College Park Campus of the University of Maryland on March 25 - 28, 1992 are presented. The harmonic oscillator formalism is playing an important role in many branches of physics. This is the simplest mathematical device which can connect the basic principle of physics with what is observed in the real world. The harmonic oscillator is the bridge between pure and applied physics.
