Ferroelectric Ordering in Nanosized PbTiO 3

The insight into the three-dimensional configuration of ferroelectric ordering in ferroelectric nanomaterials is motivated by the application of the development of functional nanodevices and the structural designing. However, the atomic deciphering of the spatial distribution of ordered structure remains challenging for the limitation of dimension and probing techniques. Here, in this paper, a neutron pair distribution function (nPDF) was utilized to analyze the spontaneous polarization distribution of zero-dimensional PbTiO 3 nanoparticles in three dimensions, via the application of reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling. The comprehensive identification with transmission electron microscopy verified the linear characteristics of polarization along the c-axis in the main body, while electric polarization distribution on the surface was enhanced abnormally. In addition, the correlation of dipole vectors extending to three unit cells below the surface is retained. This work shows an application of the micro/macroscale information to effectively decode the polarization structure of nanoferroelectrics, providing new views of designing nanoferroelectric devices.

Role of Cation Ordering on Device Performance in (Ag,Cu)InSe 2 Solar Cells with KF Post-Deposition Treatment

CuInSe 2 (CIS) has been proposed as an attractive bottom cell candidate in tandem solar cells. However, to justify the coupling with high-performance top cells (e.g., perovskites, GaAs), significant work on improving the efficiency is required. To this extent, several authors have demonstrated the benefits of alkali post-deposition treatments (PDT) to increase device open-circuit voltage (V oc ) in CIS and how Ag alloying - (Ag,Cu)InSe 2 (ACIS) - reduces defect density and enhances current collection in devices. Herein, we present a detailed study of the role that KF-PDT plays on CIS and ACIS absorber composition and structure, and propose an explanation for the decreased V oc observed when silver and potassium coexist in the system (ACIS + KF). Through a suite of synchrotron-based techniques, we investigate the nanoscale chemical distribution of the films and the formation of secondary phases. Through photoluminescence imaging, we observed a high degree of passivation with the addition of KF, and synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction confirmed the absence of a KInSe 2 surface layer usually considered to be a passivating agent. Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence show the increased presence of Cu- and Se-poor clusters in ACIS + KF, which are correlated to significantly reduced X-ray beam-induced current (XBIC). An increase in the intensity of the E/B 2 stretching mode of CIS is attributed to cation ordering near the junction and is found to track inversely to bulk V oc measurements. The cation ordering is hypothesized to arise from the formation and redistribution of defects that normally occur near the surfaces of CIS as a consequence of its polar character. Here, these defects compensate each other, and the overall inhomogeneity of the charge distribution generates electrostatic potential fluctuations that greatly increase the saturation current and hence reduce the open-circuit voltage of the device.

Evidence of a room-temperature quantum spin Hall edge state in a higher-order topological insulator

Room-temperature realization of macroscopic quantum phases is one of the major pursuits in fundamental physics. The quantum spin Hall phase is a topological quantum phase that features a two-dimensional insulating bulk and a helical edge state. Here we use vector magnetic field and variable temperature based scanning tunnelling microscopy to provide micro-spectroscopic evidence for a room-temperature quantum spin Hall edge state on the surface of the higher-order topological insulator Bi 4 Br 4 . Here, we find that the atomically resolved lattice exhibits a large insulating gap of over 200 meV, and an atomically sharp monolayer step edge hosts an in-gap gapless state, suggesting topological bulk–boundary correspondence. An external magnetic field can gap the edge state, consistent with the time-reversal symmetry protection inherent in the underlying band topology. We further identify the geometrical hybridization of such edge states, which not only supports the Z 2 topology of the quantum spin Hall state but also visualizes the building blocks of the higher-order topological insulator phase. Our results further encourage the exploration of high-temperature transport quantization of the putative topological phase reported here.

High order explicit local time stepping methods for hyperbolic conservation laws

In this paper we present and analyze a general framework for constructing high order explicit local time stepping (LTS) methods for hyperbolic conservation laws. In particular, we consider the model problem discretized by Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RK-DG) methods and design LTS algorithms based on the strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta (SSP-RK) schemes, that allow spatially variable time step sizes to be used for time integration in different regions of the computational domain. The proposed algorithms are of predictor-corrector type, in which the interface information along the time direction is first predicted based on the SSP-RK approximations and Taylor expansions, and then the fluxes over the region of the interface are corrected to conserve mass exactly at each time step. Following the proposed framework, we detail the corresponding LTS schemes with accuracy up to the fourth order, and prove their conservation property and nonlinear stability for the scalar conservation laws. Numerical experiments are also presented to demonstrate excellent performance of the proposed LTS algorithms.

Chemical order-disorder nanodomains in Fe 3 Pt bulk alloy

Chemical ordering is a common phenomenon and highly correlated with the properties of solid materials. By means of the redistribution of atoms and chemical bonds, it invokes an effective lattice adjustment and tailors corresponding physical properties. To date, however, directly probing the 3D interfacial interactions of chemical ordering remains a big challenge. In this work, we deciphered the interlaced distribution of nanosized domains with chemical order/disorder in Fe 3 Pt bulk alloy. HAADF-STEM images evidence the existence of such nanodomains. The reverse Monte Carlo method with the X-ray pair distribution function data reveal the 3D distribution of local structures and the tensile effect in the disordered domains at the single-atomic level. The chemical bonding around the domain boundary changes the bonding feature in the disordered side and reduces the local magnetic moment of Fe atoms. This results in a suppressed negative thermal expansion and extended temperature range in Fe 3 Pt bulk alloy with nanodomains. Our study demonstrates a local revelation for the chemical order/disorder nanodomains in bulk alloy. The understanding gained from atomic short-range interactions within the domain boundaries provides useful insights with regard to designing new functional compounds.

Short-range magnetic order and planar anisotropy in the topological ferrimagnet Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6

Mn 3 ⁢Si 2 ⁢Te 6 is a ferrimagnetic topological nodal-line semiconductor that exhibits unconventional colossal magnetoresistance behavior, with short-range spin fluctuations being potentially intimately linked to the emergent properties. Here we determine the short-range magnetic order and anisotropy through total neutron scattering and polarized neutron powder diffraction measurements on polycrystalline Mn 3 ⁢Si 2⁢ Te 6 . Strong in-plane anisotropy is quantified on the Mn ions through extraction of the local site susceptibility tensor. Here, the real-space local spin structure is determined through the application of magnetic pair distribution function analysis covering a wide temperature range. Short-range order over a locally frustrated trimer of three nearest neighbors is found to exist well above the long-range ferrimagnetic transition.

Characterizing particle-like charge-migration dynamics with high-order harmonic sideband spectroscopy

Here, we introduce high-order harmonic sideband spectroscopy and show that it can be a robust probe of charge migration (CM) in a halogenated carbon-chain molecule. We simulate both the CM and high-order harmonic generation (HHG) dynamics using ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that CM dynamics initiated along the molecular backbone induces sidebands in the HHG spectrum driven by a delayed laser pulse that is polarized perpendicular to the molecular axis. Monitoring the spectrum as either the HHG laser frequency or the relative delay is scanned allows for the extraction of detailed information about the time-domain characteristics of the CM process.

Magnetic order in the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS 4 : Anisotropic H – T phase diagrams and effects of pressure

Here, single crystalline samples of the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS 4 were studied by measurements of specific heat and comprehensive anisotropic temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent magnetization. In addition, measurements of the heat capacity and magnetization were performed under pressures of up to ~ 21 and ~ 14 kbar, respectively. At ambient pressure, two magnetic transitions are observed: second order from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at T N ~ 37 K, and a first-order spin reorientation transition at T * ~ 34 K. Anisotropic H – T phase diagrams were constructed using the M ( T , H ) data. As pressure is increased, T N is weakly suppressed with d T N / d P ≈ – 0.1 K/kbar. T * , on the other hand, is suppressed quite rapidly, with d T * / d P ≈ – 2 K/kbar, extrapolating to a possible quantum phase transition at P c ~ 15 kbar.

Topological order in interacting semimetals

It has recently been demonstrated that it is possible to open a gap in a magnetic Weyl semimetal, while preserving the chiral anomaly along with the charge conservation and translational symmetries, which all protect the gapless nodes in a weakly interacting semimetal. The resulting state was shown to be a nontrivial generalization of a non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquid to three dimensions. Here we point out that a second fractional quantum Hall state exists in this case. This state has exactly the same electrical and thermal Hall responses as the first, but a distinct (fracton) topological order. Moreover, the existence of this second fractional quantum Hall state necessarily implies a gapless phase, which has identical topological response to a noninteracting Weyl semimetal, but is distinct from it. Here, this may be viewed as a generalization (in a weaker form) of the known duality between a noninteracting two-dimensional Dirac fermion and QED 3 to 3+1 dimensions. In addition we discuss a (3+1)-dimensional topologically ordered state, obtained by gapping a nodal line semimetal without breaking symmetries.

Primordial black holes from bubble collisions during a first-order phase transition

We study the possibility of production of primordial black holes (PBHs) from bubble collisions during a first-order phase transition. While typical colliding bubbles are small and irrelevant for PBH production, we find that those that can produce PBHs must have a macroscopically thick fluid shell and have been born much before the typical nucleation time. Particularly large uncertainties arise from an exponential sensitivity of the nucleation rate on the required duration of bubble growth which depends on the details of the collisions and the evolution of the spacetime metric toward the end of the phase transition. We introduce a few parameters to be obtained from future numerical simulation to represent those unknowns, and estimate the PBH abundance in an Abelian Higgs benchmark model and show that it can be significant. We predict an approximately monochromatic PBH mass spectrum, and find regions in the parameter space where the PBHs can constitute entire dark matter or even overclose the Universe. Our result thus shows that models with a first-order phase transition can be constrained by overabundant PBHs or null results of other PBH searches. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Robust A -Type Order and Spin-Flop Transition on the Surface of the Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Here, we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi 2 Te 4 single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transitions, which have been theoretically proposed decades ago. Our results not only provide key ingredients for understanding the electronic properties of the antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 , but also open a new paradigm for exploring intrinsic surface metamagnetic transitions in natural antiferromagnets.

Order-Disorder Transitions in ( Ca x Sr 1 - x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13

The classification of structural phase transitions as displacive or order-disorder in character is usually based on spectroscopic data above the transition. Here, we use single crystal x-ray diffraction to investigate structural correlations in the quasiskutterudites, (Ca x Sr 1-x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 , which have a quantum phase transition at x ~ 0.9. Three-dimensional pair distribution functions show that the amplitudes of local atomic displacements are temperature independent below the transition and persist to well above the transition, a signature of order-disorder behavior. The implications for the associated electronic transitions are discussed.

Prevailing Charge Order in Overdoped La 2 – x Sr x CuO 4 beyond the Superconducting Dome

The extremely overdoped cuprates are generally considered to be Fermi liquid metals without exotic orders, whereas the underdoped cuprates harbor intertwined states. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, using Cu L 3 -edge and O K-edge resonant x-ray scattering, we reveal a charge order (CO) correlation in overdoped La 2–x⁢ Sr x ⁢CuO 4 (0.35 ≤ x ≤0.6) beyond the superconducting dome. This CO has a periodicity of ~6 lattice units with correlation lengths of ~20 lattice units. It shows similar in-plane momentum and polarization dependence and dispersive excitations as the CO of underdoped cuprates, but its maximum intensity differs along the c direction and persists up to 300 K. This CO correlation cannot be explained by the Fermi surface instability and its origin remains to be understood. Finally, our results suggest that CO is prevailing in the overdoped metallic regime and requires a reassessment of the picture of overdoped cuprates as weakly correlated Fermi liquids.

Emergent Superconductivity and Competing Charge Orders in Hole-Doped Square-Lattice t – J Model

The square-lattice Hubbard and closely related t-J models are considered as basic paradigms for understanding strong correlation effects and unconventional superconductivity (SC). Recent large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations on the extended t-J model have identified d-wave SC on the electron-doped side (with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t 2 > 0) but a dominant charge density wave (CDW) order on the hole-doped side (t 2 < 0), which is inconsistent with the SC of hole-doped cuprate compounds. We re-examine the ground-state phase diagram of the extended t-J model by employing the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations with much enhanced bond dimensions, allowing more accurate determination of the ground state. On six-leg cylinders, while different CDW phases are identified on the hole-doped side for the doping range δ = 1/16 – 1/8, a SC phase emerges at a lower doping regime, with algebraically decaying pairing correlations and d-wave symmetry. On the wider eight-leg systems, the d-wave SC also emerges on the hole-doped side at the optimal 1=8 doping, demonstrating the winning of SC over CDW by increasing the system width. Furthermore, our results not only suggest a new path to SC in general t-J model through weakening the competing charge orders, but also provide a unified understanding on the SC of both hole- and electron-doped cuprate superconductors.

Orbital ordering in the layered perovskite material CsVF 4

In strongly correlated electronic systems, several novel physical properties are induced by the orbital degree of freedom. In particular, orbital degeneracy near the Fermi level leads to spontaneous symmetry breaking, such as the nematic state in FeSe and the orbital ordering in several perovskite systems. Here, the novel layered perovskite material CsVF 4 , with a 3 d 2 electronic configuration, was systematically studied using density-functional theory and a multiorbital Hubbard model within the Hatree-Fock approximation. Furthermore, our results show that CsVF 4 should be magnetic, with a G-type antiferromagnetic arrangement in the a b plane and weak antiferromagnetic exchange along the c axis, in agreement with experimental results. Driven by the Jahn-Teller distortion in the VF 6 octahedra that shorten the c axis, the system displays an interesting electron occupancy d x y 1 ( d x z d y z ) 1 corresponding to the lower nondegenerate d x y orbital being half-filled and the other two degenerate d y z and d x z orbitals sharing one electron per site. We show that this degeneracy is broken and a novel d y z / d x z staggered orbital pattern is here predicted by both the first-principles and Hubbard model calculations. This orbital ordering is driven by the electronic instability associated with degeneracy removal to lower the energy.

Magnetic order in the two-dimensional metal-organic framework manganese pyrazinecarboxylate with Mn-Mn dimers

The magnetic properties of [Mn(pyrazinecarboxylate) 2 ] n , empirical formula C 10 H 6 MnN 4 O 4 , are investigated through susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering measurements. The structure consists of Mn-Mn dimers linked on a distorted 2D hexagonal structure. The weak out-of-plane interactions create a quasi-2D magnetic material within the larger three-dimensional metal-organic framework structure. Here, we show that this material undergoes a two-stage magnetic transition, related to the low dimensionality of the Mn lattice. First, at 5 K, which is assigned to the initial development of short-range order in the 2D layers. This is followed by long-range order at 3.3 K. Applied field measurements reveal the potential to induce magnetic transitions in moderately small fields of ~2 T. Neutron powder diffraction enabled the determination of a unique magnetic space group P2 1 '/c (No. 14.77) at 1.5 K. This magnetic structure consists of antiferromagnetically coupled Mn-Mn dimers with spins principally along the out-of-plane $a$ axis.

Anisotropic field-induced changes in the superconducting order parameter of UTe 2

UTe 2 is a newly discovered unconventional superconductor, where electron Cooper pairs combine into a spin-triplet ground state. We study the specific heat C( H,T ) of a high-quality UTe 2 single crystal, with a single anomaly at a high superconducting transition temperature T c = 2.1 K and a low residual Sommerfeld coefficient γ 0 . Applying magnetic fields up to 12 T along the crystallographic axes a, b , and c , we observe highly anisotropic behavior in γ 0 ( H ). Below 4 T, γ 0 ( H ) ≈ γ 0 + λi √H (i = a, b, c) , which is expected for an unconventional superconductor with nodes on the Fermi surface away from the direction of the magnetic field. At 4 T ( a and b axes) and 5.5 T ( c axis), distinctive changes in the behavior of γ 0 (H) suggest that a stable low-field ground state begins to evolve above 4 T. The data analysis indicates that the nodes are located near the a–b plane, with possible order parameters d B2u + iεd B1u or d B2u + iεd Au . Our findings support B 2u as the primary superconducting order parameter in UTe 2 .

Spontaneous Chirality Flipping in an Orthogonal Spin-Charge Ordered Topological Magnet

The asymmetric distribution of chiral objects with opposite chirality is of great fundamental interest ranging from molecular biology to particle physics. In quantum materials, chiral states can build on inversion-symmetry-breaking lattice structures or emerge from spontaneous magnetic ordering induced by competing interactions. Although the handedness of a chiral state can be changed through external fields, a spontaneous chirality flipping has yet to be discovered. We present experimental evidence of chirality flipping via changing temperature in a topological magnet EuAl 4 , which features orthogonal spin density waves (SDW) and charge density waves (CDW). Using circular dichroism of Bragg peaks in the resonant magnetic x-ray scattering, we find that the chirality of the helical SDW flips through a first-order phase transition with modified SDW wavelength. Intriguingly, we observe that the CDW couples strongly with the SDW and displays a rare commensurate-to-incommensurate transition at the chirality flipping temperature. Combining with first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, our results support a Fermi surface origin of the helical SDW with intertwined spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom in EuAl 4 . Our results reveal an unprecedented spontaneous chirality flipping and lay the groundwork for a new functional manipulation of chirality through momentum-dependent spin-charge-lattice interactions.
