New constraints on ultraheavy dark matter from the LZ experiment

Points representing the 90% confidence level upper limits assuming two contrasting dark matter models. First, a spin-independent, scattering model in which the differential cross section for the DM-nucleus elastic scattering scales as A^4 with the DM-nucleon elastic scattering differential cross section (A is the nuclear mass number). Second, a spin-independent, scattering model in which no coherent enhancement of the per-nucleon cross section is assumed. This can be interpreted as billiard ball scattering between the dark matter particle and the target nucleus. The upper limit corresponding to the MIMP search analysis ("ms"), and the extrapolated limit from the WIMP search analysis to high dark matter masses ("ss") are shown in each case. The points are expressed in units of GeV/c^2 and cm^2 for mass and cross section, respectively.

Di-$\pi^0$ correlations in p+p, p+Al and p+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at STAR

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of back-to-back azimuthal correlations of di- \pi^0 π 0 produced at forward pseudorapidity ( 2.6<\eta<4.0 2.6 < η < 4.0 ) in p+ p + p p , p+ p + \mathrm{Al} A l and p+ p + \mathrm{Au} A u collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of 200 GeV. A clear suppression of the correlated away-side yields is observed in p+ p + \mathrm{Au} A u and for the first time in p+ p + \mathrm{Al} A l collisions, compared with the p p + + p p data. The enhanced suppression found in p+ p + \mathrm{Au} A u with respect to p+ p + \mathrm{Al} A l collisions exhibits the saturation scale ( Q_s^2 Q s 2 ) dependence on the mass number A A . The observed suppression of back-to-back pairs as a function of event activity and transverse momentum points to non-linear gluon dynamics arising at high parton densities.

Hard exclusive $\pi^{+}n$ electro production beam spin asymmetries off the proton in the GPD and TDA regimes

Hard exclusive \pi^{+} π + n electro-production can be used to gain access to the 3D nucleon structure. The QCD factorisation mechanism in the “nearly forward region” ( t/Q^{2} t / Q 2 small) allows a description by Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs), while for the “nearly backward” kinematic region ( u/Q^{2} u / Q 2 small) a description based on nucleon to pion transitions (TDAs) is available. The paper presents a measurement of single beam spin asymmetries to extract the A^{\sin\phi}_{LU} A L U sin ϕ moments and the related cross section ratio \sigma_{LT^\prime}/\sigma_{0} σ L T ′ / σ 0 from the hard exclusive \pi^{+} π + channel off the unpolarized hydrogen target in a wide range of kinematics based on data taken with the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. In addition, under forward angles a detailed multidimensional study will be presented based on CLAS12 data and compared to theoretical predictions.

Study of correlation effects in nuclei at the limit of stability. Final report

Exotic nuclei far from the valley of stability are a particularly exciting testing ground to probe nucleon-nucleon correlations in a regime where the numbers of constituent protons and neutrons are out of balance and the influence of isospin-dependent terms within the nuclear force becomes amplified. The grant DE-FG02-08ER41556 has supported from 2008 to 2019 an MSU graduate student research assistantship at the heart of a research program that explored the evolution of nuclear structure in exotic nuclei with gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments in the N=40 region of neutron-rich nuclei at NSCL and at ATLAS at Argonne National Laboratory and that mounted a new low-energy Coulomb excitation program at NSCL’s ReA accelerator within the PI’s research program. This final scientific/technical report describes the results and outcomes resulting from the support by the Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics.

Electron and neutrino scattering from nuclei [Slides]

The knowledge of how electrons and neutrinos interact in nuclei is fundamental for many reasons, and the proper inclusion of many-body correlations between nucleons is crucial. The calculation of the nuclei from two- and three-nucleon interactions obtained from first principle is, however, one of the most challenging problems for many-body nuclear physics.

Boson Fermion Nuclei Energy Levels In The Third Period Of The Periodic Table Of Elements (Monograph No.5)

The boson fermion nucleus (BFN) energy level is shown for sodium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, chlorine, and argon. The BFN energy levels are compared to the energy levels in the shell nuclear model. Individual nucleon fermions in the BFN make minor contributions to the nucleus energy level. Nucleons rearrange into boson structures during stellar nucleosynthesis and condense into the lowest-level energy state. Deconstruction of the BFN structure and conversion to a shell or liquid-drop model brings about a higher energy state. This is not favored in nature.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the Proton in Hall A at Jefferson Lab

The structure of nucleons as they are composed of quarks and gluons is not well understood. Non-perturbative methods (such as lattice-QCD) describing quark/gluon interactions are ongoing in development, but still cannot fully reproduce the structure of hadrons. Among the observables which describe longitudinal momentum and transverse position of partons, generalized parton distributions (GPDs) describe the correlations between the two, and are accessible through p(right-arrow e;e'y)p scattering experiments in the Bjorken limit when factorization holds. A complete understanding of these functions will help us to better understand the structure of nucleons. Experiment E12-06-114 was performed by JLab's DVCS Hall A Collaboration in 2014 and 2016. Using a polarized electron beam and a liquid hydrogen target, the collaboration measured cross sections for the exclusive reaction p(right-arrow e;e'y)p at xB=0.36, 0.48, and 0.60,3 .2 lte Q2 lte 9.00, and -1.28 lte t lte -0.69. This dissertation details the analysis and results of measuring the p(right-arrow e;e'y)p cross section at xB=0.48. The measured cross section results allow us to demonstrate the validity of factorization in our kinematic regime, and extract Compton Form Factor combinations important for understanding GPDs. Additionally, the cross section results are used to test existing GPD models, KM10a and KM15.

An additional gold ion energy in RHIC for the FY2021 run

Parameters for an additional gold ion energy in RHIC between 7.3 and 9.8 GeV per nucleon are considered here. The critical factor driving the choice of an energy in this range is the need to be sufficiently far from transition at AGS extraction. The ion energy favored by STAR, 8.65 GeV per nucleon, is found to be a suitable choice. The parameters for this energy are given in Section 7 of the following

Neutrino Scattering Measurements on Hydrogen and Deuterium: A Snowmass White Paper

Neutrino interaction uncertainties are a limiting factor in current and next-generation experiments probing the fundamental physics of neutrinos, a unique window on physics beyond the Standard Model. Neutrino-nucleon scattering amplitudes are an important part of the neutrino interaction program. However, since all modern neutrino detectors are composed primarily of heavy nuclei, knowledge of elementary neutrino-nucleon amplitudes relies heavily on experiments performed in the 1970s and 1980s, whose statistical and systematic precision are insufficient for current needs. In this white paper, we outline the motivation for attempting measurements on hydrogen and deuterium that would improve this knowledge, and we discuss options for making these measurements either with the DUNE near detector or with a dedicated facility.

Overview of SoLID

SoLID spectrometer was proposed to fully exploit the potential of JLab 12 GeV energy upgrade. It is a large acceptance detector which can handle very high luminosity. An overview of the rich physics program will be given, which includes number of planned measurements: a multi-dimensional mapping of semi-inclusive DIS asymmetries for tomography of the nucleon in momentum space in the high-x region and precision determination of the tensor charge; a measurement of parity-violating DIS to provide a precision test of the Standard Model, reaching a sensitivity to new physics at 10-20 TeV level; a precision measurement of J/psi photo- and electro-production cross sections in the threshold region to probe the strong color fields in the nucleon and to study the origin of the proton mass. The current status and the plan of the project will be discussed.

New Baryon State N'(1720)3/2+ from the CLAS pi^+pi^--p Photo- and Electroproduction Data

Combined studies of exclusive meson photo- and electroproduction have extended the capabilities in the search for new excited states of the nucleon, the so called ?missing? resonances. New excited state of the nucleon, N?(1720)3/2+ has been observed in the combined studies of the pi^+pi^-p photo- and electroproduction off protons data measured with the CLAS detector at Jlab. The results on the new baryon state observation will be presented and discussed in the talk. A successful description of the pi^+pi^-p photo- and electroproduction data achieved with independent from photon virtualities (Q^2) mass, total and partial hadronic decay widths of N?(1720)3/2^+ state offers a strong evidence for the existence of this new resonance. Currently, N?(1720)3/2^+ resonance is the only observed new baryon state for which the results on Q^2-evolution of the electroexcitation amplitudes have become available. They offer an insight into the ?missing? resonance structure for the first time. Future analyses of the N?(1720)3/2^+ electroexcitation amplitudes will shed light on the particular structural features of ?missing? resonances which made their observation so challenging for decades

Update On Meson Structure Studies at Jefferson Lab Hall C

The development of the GPD formalism in the last 25 years has been a groundbreaking advance in our understanding of the structure of the nucleon. Unifying the concepts of parton distributions and of hadronic form factors, GPDs contain a wealth of new information about how quarks and gluons make up hadrons. For example, GPDs correlate different parton configurations within the hadron at the quantum mechanical level. A recent theorem allows the reaction amplitude to be factorized into a hard part, representing the interaction of the incident virtual photon probe with the parton, and a soft part, containing the GPD and, representing the response of the nucleon to this interaction. Importantly this factorization relies on several assumptions that may not be true at low four momentum transfer squared (Q^2) for meson production. The main assumption is that the cross section will depend on Q^-6. This presentation will give the projected results of the recently completed Pion-LT experiment fro

Insight into Strong QCD and the Emergence of Mass from N* Experiments

Studies of nucleon resonance (N*) electroexcitation amplitudes (?vpN* electrocouplings) within a broad range of virtual photon four-momentum squared Q2 offer unique information on many facets of the strong interaction in the regime of large QCD running coupling (sQCD regime) seen in the generation of different resonances. The results on the ?vpN* electrocouplings from exclusive meson electroproduction data measured with the CLAS detector at JLab and their impact on understanding of sQCD dynamics will be presented in this talk. These CLAS data have provided the first and only available results on the evolution of the ?vpN* electrocouplings with Q2 to 5 GeV2 for most N* states in the mass range up to 1.8 GeV. A successful description of the CLAS results on the Q2-evolution of the ?(1232)3/2+, N(1440)1/2+, and ?(1600)3/2+ electrocouplings has been achieved within the continuum Schwinger method (CSM) by employing the same momentum dependence of the dressed quark mass inferred from the QCD Lagrangian, which also reproduces the experimental results on the pion elastic electromagnetic form factor and parton distribution function, and the nucleon elastic form factor. This success has demonstrated the capability for gaining insight into the emergence of hadron mass (EHM) from the exploration of the Q2-evolution of the ?vpN* electrocouplings. These studies also allow us to establish either universality or environmental sensitivity of the dressed quark mass function and to explore qq-correlation amplitudes of different spin-parities and the mixing between configurations of different orbital angular momentum. Exploration of the resonance electroexcitation with the CLAS12 detector and in the future with a possible 22 GeV machine at JLab offer the only foreseen opportunity to extend information on the ?vpN* electrocouplings for Q2 from 5-30 GeV2. Analyses of these results will cover the full range of distances where the dominant part of hadron mass and N* structure emerge from QCD.

Towards Exascale Astrophysics of Mergers and Supernovae (TEAMS)

The major goals of the TEAMS project are (i) to improve the modeling of many of the suggested astrophysical sites of the r‐process, as well as some potential p‐process sites, (ii) to use our models to support and guide the experimental efforts at FRIB and similar facilities, and (iii) to use our tools to cement our understanding of the roles that massive stars play in galactic chemical evolution. As part of the TEAMS project, Mezzacappa (UTK, Reddy (UW), Surman (ND), and Steiner (UTK) are (i) generating equations of state and neutrino opacities for simulations of core‐collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers which are more faithful to current understanding of the nucleon‐nucleon interaction, (ii) integrating those new equations of state and neutrino opacities into new simulation codes being developed, (iii) performing detailed nuclear reaction network post‐processing to determine abundances from simulations and (iv) quantifying the impact of nuclear physics uncertainties on r‐process abundances.

First Measurement of Differential Charged Current Quasielastic-like $\nu_\mu$–Argon Scattering Cross Sections In Kinematic Imbalance Variables With The MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated multi-differential cross sections for charged-current events with muon neutrinos scattering on argon with solely a muon and a single proton in the final state as a function of kinematic imbalance variables. The measurement was carried out using the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory within the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detector with an exposure of 6.79 × 10 20 protons on target. Events were selected to enhance the contribution of charged-current mesonless interactions with one proton detected in the final state. The data discussed here are reported in terms of multidifferential cross sections in kinematic imbalance variables, which are generally sensitive to nuclear effects. The double-differential results in these variables can provide an excellent handle to disentagle specific nuclear aspects not easily isolated via single differential cross sections. Our results pave a path towards identifying regions of the phase-space where future interaction modeling development and Monte Carlo neutrino generator tuning efforts should concentrate. EVENT SELECTION Neutrino oscillation measurements aim to extract neutrino mixing angles, mass differences, the value of the chargeparity violating phase in the lepton sector, and to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model [1, 2]. For that to be achieved, an unprecedented understanding of neutrino-argon interactions is of utmost importance since a growing number of neutrino oscillation experiments employ Liquid Argon Time Projector Chamber (LArTPC) neutrino detectors [3–6]. The accuracy to which these experiments can extract neutrino oscillation parameters requires a good understanding of the neutrino energy. Experimentally, this energy is deduced from the measured kinetic energies of particles that are emitted following the neutrino interaction in the detector. The kinematic properties of such finalstate particles reflect complex dynamics due to nuclear and initial-state effects of the interaction [7]. However, certain categories of nuclear effects can be isolated by variables built specifically to characterize the degeneracy between such effects [8–10]. This note reports cross sections in kinematic variables sensitive to nuclear effects using events with one detected muon with momentum 0.1 < pµ < 1.2 GeV/c, and exactly one proton with 0.3 < pp < 1 GeV/c. This signal definition includes events with any number of protons below 300 MeV/c, neutrons at any momenta, and charged pions with momentum lower than 70 MeV/c. This choice is guided by the fact that their experimental signature of correlated muon-proton pairs is fairly straightforward to reconstruct [11–22]. Such events primarily originate from chargedcurrent (CC) neutrino-nucleon quasielastic (QE) scattering interactions where the neutrino removes a single intact nucleon from the nucleus without producing any additional particles. This definition can also include contributions from interactions that lead to the production of additional particles that are absent from the final state due to nuclear effects, such as pion absorption, or have momenta that are below the experimental detection threshold.

Near-threshold photoproduction of J/ of a proton with the CLAS12 experiment

The photo-production of vector mesons off the proton has long been established as an important tool to access the gluon content of the nucleon. In particular, the photo-production of J/Psi near the threshold energy has been related to the Gravitational Form Factors of the gluons which provide information about the mass and the force distributions in the nucleon. In this talk, I will present results on the near-threshold photoproduction of J/Psi using data taken in 2018 and 2019 by the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with an electron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. This measurement is expected to provide direct insight on the gluons distribution inside the proton.
