Diode laser spectra of CCl2F2 near 10.8 muon M: Air-broadening effects

Laboratory spectra of CCL2F2 in the 10.8 micron region was recorded, using a tuneable diode laser spectrometer. Effects of air-broadening at pressures up to 48 Torr show that spectral structure should be exhibited under high resolution at altitudes as low as 19 Km. The single line, pressure-broadening coefficient for CCL2F2 was estimated to be 8 MHz/Torr FWHM.

Discovery of natural gain amplification in the 10 muon m CO2 laser bands on Mars: The first definite natural laser

Fully resolved intensity profiles of various lines in the CO2 bands at 9.4 micrometers and 10.4 micrometers were measured on Mars using an infrared heterodyne spectrometer. Analysis of the line shapes shows that the Mars atmosphere exhibits positive gain on these lines, providing the first definite detection of natural optical gain amplification and enabling identification of these lines as the first definite natural laser ever discovered.

Electron and muon parameters of EAS and the composition of primary cosmic rays in 10(15) to approximately 10(16) eV

Estimation of the relative intensities of protons and heavy nuclei in primary cosmic rays in the energy region 10 to the 15th power approx. 10 to the 17th power eV, was done by a systematic comparison between all available observed data on various parameters of extensive air showers (EAS) and the results of simulation. The interaction model used is an extrapolation of scaling violation indicated by recent pp collider results. A composition consisting of various percentages of Fe in an otherwise pure proton beam was assumed. Greatest overall consistency between the data and the simulation is found when the Fe fraction is in the region of 25%.

Diurnal variations from muon data at Takeyama underground station

An underground station, Takeyama, is introduced, and some results of the solar diurnal and semi-diurnal variations for the period between 1967 and 1984 are presented. There are clear tendencies of double and single solar cycle variations in the daily variations which are in good accord with those detected by other underground and neutron monitor observations.

Electrons, muons and hadrons in extensive air showers and how do they depend on nuclear interaction model, part 2

Some of the results of Monte Carlo simulations of extensive air showers for nuclear interactions models are presented. The most significant part of scaling violation effect is generated by the inclusion of rising cross-section. Among the models considered the lowest value for Eo/N(max) is obtained when rapidly rising cross-section and charge exchange are both included (model R-F01). The value is still 1.38 GeV/electron. Except at the highest energies, the sensitivity to atomic mass of the primary is greater than to specific assumptions about multiple production.

An underground cosmic ray muon telescope for observation of cosmic ray anisotropy

A telescope housed in a tunnel laboratory has an overburden of 573 hg cm(-2) and is located under the center of a saddle-shaped landscape. It is composed of triple layers of proportional counters, each layer of area approx. 4m x 2m and their separation 0.5m. Events are selected by triple coincidence and software track identification. The telescope is in operation for over a year and the overall count rate is 1280 hr(-1). The structure and operation of the system is reported.

Polarizabilities and Other Properties of the td Muons Molecular Ion

Wavefunctions of Hylleraas type were used earlier to calculate energy levels of muonic systems. Recently, we found in the case of the molecular ions H2+, D2+ and HD+ that it was necessary to include high powers of the internuclear distance in the Hylleraas functions to localize the nuclear motion when treating the ions as three-body systems without invoking the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We try the same approach in a muonic system, td(mu-). Improved convergence is obtained for J = 0 and 1 states for shorter expansions when we use this type of generalized Hylleraas function, but as the expansion length increases the high powers are no longer useful. We obtain good energy values for the two lowest J = 0 and J = 1 states and compare them with the best earlier calculations. Expectation values are obtained for various operators, the Fermi contact parameters, and the permanent quadrupole moment. The cusp conditions are also calculated. The polarizability of the ground state is then calculated using second-order perturbation theory with intermediate J = 1 pseudostates. It should be possible to measure the polarizability by observing Rydberg states of atoms with td(mu-) acting as the nucleus.

Mission Implementation Constraints on Planetary Muon Radiography

Cost: Use heritage hardware, especially use a tested landing system to reduce cost (Phoenix or MSL EDL stage). The sky crane technology delivers higher mass to the surface and enables reaching targets at higher elevation, but at a higher mission cost. Rover vs. Stationary Lander: Rover-mounted instrument enables tomography, but the increased weight of the rover reduces the allowable payload weight. Mass is the critical design constraint for an instrument for a planetary mission. Many factors that are minor factors or do not enter into design considerations for terrestrial operation are important for a planetary application. From light neutrino decay phenomenology to muon neutrino cross-section measurement at MINERvA experiment

This thesis tackles two essential topics of neutrino physics: neutrino decay and neutrino cross-section measurement. First, the invisible and visible neutrino decay is analyzed through a phenomenological approach, considering future long-baseline neutrino experiments such as DUNE and a hypothetical neutrino beam toward the ANDES laboratory. The study takes into account the ν μ and ν e disappearance and appearance, respectively, for both FHC and RHC flux modes. The results showed a negligible matter effect for DUNE but significantly more notable at ANDES. At 90% C.L., the sensitivity to the decay parameter α3 can be as small as 2 × 10 -6 eV 2 for a chosen coupling. The impact of neutrino decay in the determination of θ 23 and δ CP were also shown. Second, the double-differential cross-section measurement for ν μ -carbon interactions with three-momentum transfer |$\vec{q}$| < 1.2 GeV obtained with medium energy exposures in the NuMI beam at MINERvA experiment are reported. The measurement is presented as a function of |$\vec{q}$| and E avail and reviews different interaction models and nuclear effects along quasi-elastic to resonance processes to define a new model for a better agreement. The double differential cross sections are compared to the MnvTunes, GENIE, and NuWro predictions.

Signals of a New Gauge Boson from IceCube and Muon $g-2$

A $Z'$ boson associated with a broken $U(1)_{L_{\mu} - L_{\tau}}$ gauge symmetry offers an economical solution to the long-standing $g_\mu-2$ anomaly, confirmed and strengthened by recent measurements at Fermilab. Here, we revisit the impact of such a $Z'$ on the spectrum of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, as measured by the IceCube experiment. This spectrum has been observed to exhibit a dip-like feature at $E_{\nu} \sim 0.2-1 \, {\rm PeV}$, which could plausibly arise from the physics of the sources themselves, but could also be the consequence of high-energy neutrinos resonantly scattering with the cosmic neutrino background, mediated by a $Z'$ with a mass on the order of $m_{Z'} \sim 10 \, {\rm MeV}$. In this study, we calculate the impact of such a $Z'$ on the high-energy neutrino spectrum for a variety of model parameters and source distributions. For couplings that can resolve the $g_{\mu}-2$ anomaly, we find that this model could self-consistently produce a spectral feature that is consistent with IceCube's measurement, in particular if the neutrinos observed by IceCube predominantly originate from high-redshift sources.

Measurement Of The Total Cross-Section Of Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Coherent Pion Production in NOvA Near Detector

Charged Current (CC) coherent neutrino-nucleus pion production is characterized by small momentum transferred to the nucleus, which is left in its ground state. Despite the relatively large uncertainties on the production cross-section, coherent production of mesons by neutrinos represents an important process, as it can shed light on the structure of the weak current and can also constitute a potential source of background for modern neutrino oscillation experiments and searches for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics. This Ph.D. thesis presents a new measurement of CC coherent pion production in the NOvA near detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). The analysis is based on the use of both particle identification and kinematic selection criteria based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to achieve a selection purity of 60%. Given the energy range 1-5 GeV accessible with the available NOvA exposure in the NuMI beam, the results will also be relevant for f uture neutrino experiments like the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).
