Mineralogical and Al-Mg Isotopic Study of Fine-Grained Ca-Al-Rich Inclusions

Fine-grained Ca-Al-rich inclusions (FGIs) in carbonaceous chondrites are interpreted as aggregates of nebular gas-solid condensates that escaped significant melting. Thus far, a small number of FGIs from CV3 chondrites have been analyzed, showing a range of (26Al/27Al)0=~5.4×10−5to ~3.4×10−5.These values are similar to (26Al/27Al)0inferred from coarse-grained, igneous CAIs (CGIs) from CV3 chondrites. This observed spread in (26Al/27Al)0values indicates the CAI formation over an extended time period. However, more analyses are needed to determine if the FGIs formed continuously over a significant time period or by multiple episodic events of nebular condensation. In this study, we present high-precision Al-Mg isotopic data of FGIs from reduced CV3 chondrites to better constrain their formation timescale relative to CGIs in CV3 chondrites, as well as to smaller FGIs in CO3 chondrites. This isotopic study is coordinated with a FIB/TEM study to elucidate the origin and nature of FGIs in the petrologic and mineralogical context.

Al-Mg Isotopic Constraints on the Condensation Age of Fine-Grained Refractory Inclusions in Reduced Cv3 Chondrites

Fine-grained Ca-Al-rich inclusions (FGIs) in carbonaceous chondrites are interpreted as aggregates of direct condensates from the solar nebula that escaped extensive melting. Thus far, a few high-precision SIMS Al-Mg chronology studies of FGIs from CV3 chondrites have been reported. Argued that (26Al/27Al)0 of all FGIs are close to the bulk refractory inclusion value of ~5.2×10−5 which may define a time zero for the FGI condensation. A similar (26Al/27Al)0 value was also inferred from an amoeboid olivine aggregate (AOA), which also represents a direct condensate from the solar nebula. In contrast, reported significant variations in (26Al/27Al)0 of FGIs, ranging from ~5.2×10−5 to ~3.4×10−5, and concluded that their formation continued over at least ~0.4 Ma after the canonical value. These contrasting results suggest that the chronological significance for the formation age spread of FGIs in CV3 chondrites is still poorly constrained.

On the Corrosion Response of Novel Heat Exchangers Manufactured by Casting of Al-Ce-Mg Alloy

Developing low-cost and durable heat exchangers is critical for next-generation heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The emerging requirement to minimize the total refrigerant charge inventory while ensuring a uniform distribution of refrigerant has led to the deployment of advanced manufacturing strategies. At the same time, corrosion is a longstanding issue for metal components, especially those used in heat exchanger (HX) applications. In this study, Al-Ce-Mg alloy-based HXs have been investigated. The corrosion resistance of HXs prototype manufactured by the casting process has been examined and the potential of a new manufacturing approach has been explored to meet the requirements of emerging needs.

In each O5I cluster, there are five inequivalent O sites. In the first O site, O is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one I atom. The O–I bond length is 1.90 Å. In the second O site, O is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one I atom. The O–I bond length is 1.93 Å. In the third O site, O is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one I atom. The O–I bond length is 1.87 Å. In the fourth O site, O is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one I atom. The O–I bond length is 1.86 Å. In the fifth O site, O is bonded in a water-like geometry to two equivalent I atoms. There are one shorter (2.00 Å) and one longer (2.01 Å) O–I bond lengths. I is bonded to six O atoms to form edge-sharing IO6 octahedra.
