Predicting melt pool depth and grain length using multiple signatures from in-situ single camera two-wavelength imaging pyrometry for laser powder bed fusion
In laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), the in-situ process signatures are known to have a direct correlation with the microstructural properties of the solidified melt pool (MP). It is known that the MP cooling and heating rates, and laser processing parameters can critically determine the grain structure and thereby affect the part properties. The objective of this work is to study the feasibility of using in-process, high-speed imaging pyrometry for evaluating the solidified MP properties “below” the surface, such as depth and microstructural properties. To accomplish this, we employ an in-house single camera-based two-wavelength imaging pyrometry (STWIP) system for monitoring the printing of single-scan tracks with Inconel 718 on a commercial LPBF printer (EOS M290). Further, the lab designed STWIP system is a coaxial high-speed (>10,000 fps) imaging system capable of monitoring MP temperature, morphology, and intensity profiles. The temperature measurements from STWIP are emissivity independent. The STWIP measured MP signatures of the printed tracks are correlated with the ex-situ microscopy characterized MP depth and the average grain lengths. From the data analysis, using support vector machine (SVM)-based regression models, we found that the MP temperature signatures are crucial for an accurate prediction of MP depth and the grain length, thus validating the novelty and necessity of the developed in-situ monitoring methods and analysis.

Expanded method for the determination of burnup in nuclear fuels using multiple neodymium isotopes
Established methods for the determination of burnup in nuclear fuels commonly rely on the measurement of 148Nd in the spent fuel in concert with known fission product yields to determine the atom percent of fissions in the fuel. This isotope of neodymium is used for various reasons, including chemical and radioactive stability, ease of measurement, and low rates of formation and destruction due to neutron flux apart from fission. However, careful calculation of effective cumulative fission yields and correction factors for (n,γ) capture reactions allows for additional stable and long-lived isotopes of neodymium to be used to provide additional independent measurements of burnup, reducing statistical uncertainty. This method was developed and successfully applied to measure the burnup of compacts from the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) Fuel Development and Qualification Program. The mean burnup measured using 143Nd, 145Nd, 146Nd, 148Nd, and 150Nd was statistically observed to be the same as that measured using 148Nd alone, but the statistical uncertainty in the measurement was reduced by a factor of 2, providing a tighter confidence interval in the final results.

Custom-designed heat treatment simultaneously resolves multiple challenges facing 3D-printed single-crystal superalloys
Single-crystal Ni-based superalloys are currently the material of choice for turbine blade applications, especially with the emerging additive manufacturing (AM) that facilitates the manufacture/repair of these single crystals. This promising AM route, however, comes with a dilemma: in the fusion and heat affected zones after e-beam or laser induced melting, one needs a solutionizing annealing to relieve the residual stresses and homogenize the chemical/microstructure. The super-solvus solutionizing temperature is usually adopted from the protocol for the cast superalloys, which almost always causes recrystallization and stray grain growth, resulting in a polycrystalline microstructure and degrading the high-temperature mechanical performance. Here, in this paper, we demonstrate a custom-designed post-printing heat treatment to replace the conventional super-solvus one. The recovery and relatively low temperature diminish the driving force for recrystallization and the movement of stray grain boundaries, without suffocating the chemical/microstructural homogenization thanks to the narrow dendrite width and short element segregation distance. The optimal duration of the heat treatment is proposed to achieve atomic-diffusion mediated chemical homogenization while limiting γ'-particle coarsening in the interdendritic regions. Our strategy makes it practically feasible to resolve several bottleneck problems with one processing/treatment, removing a seemingly formidable obstacle to effective additive manufacturing of superalloy single crystal products.
Machine learning bridges local static structure with multiple properties in metallic glasses
A long-standing challenge in the metallic glass (MG) community has been how to quantitatively gauge the influence of the intricate local packing environment on the response (such as the propensity for atomic rearrangement) of the atomic configuration to external stimuli. Here we establish this structure–property relation by representing the complex amorphous structure using a single, flexibility-orientated structural quantity. This structural flexibility (SF) couples to a bona fide structural representation, the pair distribution function (PDF) of individual atoms, through a weighting function that reflects what matters in the static atomic configuration to dynamic responses. Machine learning is used, employing microscopic flexibility volume as the supervisory signal, to establish via direct regression an optimized weighting vector, which is proven robust for all quenching rates, deformation conditions, and different compositions in a given (e.g., Cu x Zr 100-x ) alloy system. Additionally, the SF is evaluated solely from the particle positions (PDF), for any structure variation, from the atomic scale up to sample average. Strong correlations are demonstrated between SF and a broad range of properties, including vibrational, diffusional, as well as elastic and plastic relaxation responses.

Identifying multiple synergistic factors on the susceptibility to stress relaxation cracking in variously heat-treated weldments
The 347H austenitic stainless steel has been widely used for pressure vessels and pipeline (PVP) applications due to its excellent creep and corrosion resistance, which fit ideally to the harsh conditions in petrochemical industries, fossil fuel or nuclear power plants, and modern energy storages. However, a failure mode has been commonly observed with cracks emerging at the heat affected zone (HAZ) of weldments during post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) or under intermediate to high temperature service conditions. This phenomenon is termed as Stress Relaxation Cracking (SRC) since the purpose of PWHT is to relieve the welding-induced residual stress fields, or as Stress Age Cracking (SAC) if failure happens during service. A leading literature explanation of this failure suggests that the residual stress relaxation and the precipitation dissolution and/or re-precipitation occur in the same temperature range, which can lead to locally high strains and thus to crack at the grain boundaries. Since in situ spatial measurements of residual stress fields, microstructural evolution, and failure processes are nearly infeasible, this work recourses to a micromechanical finite element framework that models the high temperature failure as the nucleation and growth of grain boundary cavities, whereas various parameters such as thermomechanical loading history and its evolution, the competition of grain-interior dislocation creep and grain-boundary diffusion in failure lifetime, and microstructural heterogeneities (such as the precipitate free zone near grain boundaries) can be quantitatively incorporated. It can be concluded from these microstructure-explicit simulations that an accurate knowledge of residual stress evolution and a carefully calibrated set of material constitutive parameters are the essential prerequisites for lifetime predictions. The understanding of individual governing factors also leads to a mechanistic interpretation of the observed SRC susceptibility C-curves. In conclusion, these results suggest that the criticality of residual stress evolution, but not the precipitation-induced local strains, be the leading factor for SRC.
Inactivation of multiple human pathogens by Fathhome's dry sanitizer device: Rapid and eco-friendly ozone-based disinfection
SARS-CoV-2 spread rapidly, causing millions of deaths across the globe. As a result, demand for medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) surged and supplies dwindled. Separate entirely, hospital-acquired infections have become commonplace and challenging to treat. To explore the potential of novel sterilization techniques, this study evaluated the disinfection efficacy of Fathhome's ozone-based, dry-sanitizing device by dose and time response. Inactivation of human pathogens was tested on non-porous (plastic) surfaces. 95.42-100% inactivation was observed across all types of vegetative microorganisms and 27.36% inactivation of bacterial endospores tested, with no residual ozone detectable after completion. These results strongly support the hypothesis that Fathhome's commercial implementation of gas-based disinfection is suitable for rapid decontamination of a wide variety of pathogens on PPE and other industrially relevant materials.
