Remote Sensing Approach for Monitoring Tree Health Adjacent to Transmission Corridors

This study presents an initial proof-of-concept for a satellite-based remote sensing approach to identify and monitor potential areas of poor tree health across the entire BPA service territory on an annual basis. We tested three variants of “delta peak NDVI” ( ΔPN ) change detection metrics that express interannual variation in primary productivity relative to a baseline by comparing ΔPN values for known insect/disease disturbances and nearby reference locations. All three metrics showed promise for detecting poor tree health in the year during disturbance, but the metric based on the difference from the long-term (2016-2024) median ( Δ Med PN ) was preferred due to its responsiveness to change in the years during and after disturbance, resilience to interannual variation, and ease of interpretation as being above or below normal. Comparison of Δ Med PN grouped by relative severity of disturbance indicated it was not sensitive enough to detect “low” severity disturbances, as mapped by USGS’s LANDFIRE program, but could distinguish “moderate” and “high” severity disturbances from reference locations. These findings informed selection of a threshold for Δ Med PN , which was combined with areas exhibiting negative NDVI to map potential areas of concern. Visual inspection of before/after high-resolution imagery and NDVI time series showed that many areas of concern aligned with visible signs of defoliation and die-off as well as other types of disturbance (e.g., landslides, logging, road grading, flooding). Some areas of concern are thought to be false detections caused by persistent shadow, and some could not be explained with visual inspection due to spatiotemporal limitations of before/after imagery. In summary, our approach shows promise for large-scale monitoring of tree health adjacent to BPA transmission lines, but additional work is recommended to improve model sophistication and remove noise.

EIC ESR beam position monitors thermal and thermomechanical study preliminary design

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) Electron Storage Ring (ESR) Beam Position Monitors (BPM) are designed to monitor the electron beam orbit position on a turn-by-turn and bunch-by-bunch basis in the vacuum chamber. Large variations in ESR fill pattern and bunch intensity imposes a large dynamic range on the BPM system design. And given the large ESR beam current - up to 2.5 A with 1160 x 20 nC bunches – the heating by synchrotron radiation (SR) and beam impedance is a significant concern. The high energy of the electrons – up to 18 GeV – leads to scat tering of the SR that produces high radiation doses and as sociated heating of structures away from the SR impact area. Because of this intense heating, and stringent position stability requirements, an in-depth engineering analysis was carried out. This paper will review the analysis made of the preliminary design and its main outcomes.

Evaluating Tools and Technologies for Monitoring Baleen Whales During Offshore Wind Foundation Installation

Impacts to baleen whales are of particular concern in the context of offshore wind development because of their conservation status, the overlap of their habitat with current and planned offshore wind energy facilities, and their expected sensitivity to low-frequency sounds, such as those produced during pile driving. Therefore, this report focuses on monitoring technologies capable of detecting this species group. The scope of this report is to assess the current state of technologies and methods for monitoring baleen whales in low- and no-light conditions in conjunction with offshore wind foundation installation. This work considers the performance of various sensing technologies that can be used to observe the presence of baleen whales near offshore construction activities. The scope of work includes: 1. Technology Performance Metrics – Identify metrics that can be used to assess technology performance. 2. Technology Evaluation – Synthesize the past performance of technologies with respect to the performance metrics based on available literature. 3. Technology Characterization Framework – Describe a potential framework to characterize technology performance with a standardized approach. 4. Technology Research and Development Needs – Identify future needs and opportunities for research, development, and deployment to improve technologies.

Active Seismoelectric Monitoring of CO 2 Injection

Conference presentation at Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Conference 2024, Houston, Texas, March 11–13, 2024. We investigated the use of active seismoelectric monitoring (ASE) to determine its effectiveness in detecting CO 2 injected deep underground and as an additional monitoring option for carbon storage projects. The EERC performed an ASE survey in February of 2023 at Pennel oil field near Baker, Montana, as part of the U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored Williston Basin CO 2 Field Laboratory in conjunction with operating partner Denbury Inc. The field site is part of the Cedar Creek Anticline geologic structure, with CO 2 planned for injection into a stacked storage complex (SSC) in the Interlake Formation containing both a residual oil zone and a conventional reservoir. The objective was to test the ASE method’s ability to characterize baseline fluid distribution in both the near surface and the SSC prior to CO 2 injection.

Test and Evaluation of Radiofrequency Tamper Indicating Devices for Remote Monitoring of Advanced/Small Modular Reactors

Advanced and small modular reactors (A/SMRs), due to their versatile nature, are likely to be used in remote locations to provide electrical power or other services in regions that are difficult to access or have limited transportation infrastructure. This will result in limited on-site staff, therefore driving A/SMR vendors to consider remote monitoring as a solution to support nuclear security. Maintaining Continuity of Knowledge (CoK) of nuclear material quantities and locations is vital to nuclear security, and remote monitoring of active tamper indicating devices (TIDs) has been well established as a component of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safeguards since the early 2000s. Active TIDs, such as radiofrequency TIDs (RFTIDs), immediately alarm upon unauthorized access attempts, promoting timely detection. In contrast, passive TIDs require a surveillance regime and offer delayed detection. Active TIDs deter insiders and enable prompt detection of malicious acts. They can be used on nuclear material containers and controlled entry points like vaults and toolboxes. Therefore, the implementation of RFTIDs into security programs bolsters overall nuclear material control, and provides a visible deterrent, with primary efficacy in mitigating the insider threat and potentially allowing for Security by Design considerations. They are a strong candidate technology for maintaining nuclear security of A/SMRs but need to be evaluated for feasibility and implementation into the wider physical protection system.

Hanford Site Bee Nest Box Monitoring Report for Calendar Year 2021

This report summarizes the results of the third year of monitoring bee nest boxes on the Hanford Site. Twenty bee nest boxes were installed as a component of compensatory mitigation for the installation of the L-894 water line between the 200-East and 200-West Areas of the Hanford Site in July 2019. The goal of this compensatory mitigation is to replace lost nesting habitat for above-ground nesting bees in a mature sagebrush ecosystem. Annual monitoring will track the condition and occupation of the bee nest boxes to determine if the compensatory mitigation was successful and to identify best practices when replacing nesting habitat for native bees.
