Mathematical Models for Optimization of Grid-Integrated Energy Storage Systems

Energy storage has been proven to yield positive effects on planning, operation and control of electric grids. It has become a crucial task to properly model the energy storage systems (ESS) under the framework of grid optimization on transmission and distribution networks including microgrids. This paper presents a review on mathematical models and test cases of ESSs used for grid optimization studies, where the network constraints of power systems are included. The existing ESS models are mainly classified into two categories – linear and nonlinear models. The two main categories are further divided into several subcategories respectively; such as mixed-integer linear and convex nonlinear sub-categories. Based on the review and discussions, this paper aims at providing suggestions for choosing proper ESS models for specific grid optimization studies considering the chosen power network model.

Integrated hydrogen recycle system using pressurized multichamber tank

A multi-chambered electrolyte storage tank for a redox flow battery system, may include first and second electrolyte chambers, and a bulkhead, wherein the first and second electrolyte chambers are fluidly coupled to first and second sides of a redox flow battery cell, respectively, the first and second electrolyte chambers include first and second liquid electrolyte volumes, respectively, and the first and second liquid electrolyte volumes are separated by the bulkhead positioned therebetween. In this way, manufacturing and operational complexity of a redox flow battery system can be reduced.

SQuaD: Smart Quantum Detection for Photon Recognition and Dark Count Elimination

Quantum detectors of single photons are an essential component for quantum information processing across computing, communication and networking. Today's quantum detection system, which consists of single photon detectors, timing electronics, control and data processing software, is primarily used for counting the number of single photon detection events. However, it is largely incapable of extracting other rich physical characteristics of the detected photons, such as their wavelengths, polarization states, photon numbers, or temporal waveforms. This work, for the first time, demonstrates a smart quantum detection system, SQuaD, which integrates a field programmable gate array (FPGA) with a neural network model, and is designed to recognize the features of photons and to eliminate detector dark-count. The SQuaD is a fully integrated quantum system with high timing-resolution data acquisition, onboard multi-scale data analysis, intelligent feature recognition and extraction, and feedback-driven system control. Our \name experimentally demonstrates 1) reliable photon counting on par with the state-of-the art commercial systems; 2) high-throughput data processing for each individual detection events; 3) efficient dark count recognition and elimination; 4) up to 100% accurate feature recognition of photon wavelength and polarization. Additionally, we deploy the SQuaD to an atomic (erbium ion) photon emitter source to realize noise-free control and readout of a spin qubit in the telecom band, enabling critical advances in quantum networks and distributed quantum information processing.

A reduced order sulfuric acid decomposition model for a nuclear-powered hybrid sulfur cycle

A reduced order model of sulfuric acid decomposition within a bayonet chemical reactor was developed to support the U. S. Department of Energy Integrated Energy System program, and address the lack of knowledge in scaling and integration for joint chemical and nuclear processes. Sulfuric acid decomposition within a bayonet reactor was modeled to provide chemical and thermodynamic data relevant to advanced nuclear reactor-driven integrated energy systems based on desired operational scale and operational conditions. The temperature range required for high-temperature advanced nuclear reactor integrated energy systems, 750-850 °C, was shown to produce reasonable agreement (within a few percent relative error) with past models and experimental data, and yielded good efficiency results for bayonet reactor operations. The results of the reduced order model agreed with previous work from Savannah River National Labs within a maximum of 3.4% error on the decomposition of sulfur trioxide, and on previous Hybrid Sulfur flowsheets from Gorensek and Summers that showed operational temperature, pressure, and composition ranges for efficiency which made the Hybrid Sulfur cycle competitive with water electrolysis. Here, the agreement with previous high-fidelity models provided a framework for future Integrated Energy System grid evaluations with an advanced nuclear reactor and large-scale hydrogen production using a mathematical model to represent chemical operations.
