On Greenstadt's binary index criterion

The Greenstadt-type criterion for distinguishing between laminar and pulsating (i.e., irregular) bow shock crossings can be expressed as a critical angle between the shock normal and the magnetic field. When the field is more tangent to the shock plane than this critical angle, the shock is laminar. More importantly, the requirement of Galilean invariance of the physics underlying such a criterion reveals that the Greenstadt p index must vary inversely as the solar wind velcoity.

Simultaneous measurements of radar reflectivity and refractive index spectra in clear air convection.

Simultaneous measurements of radar reflectivity and radio refractive index at several altitudes in clear air convection have been made. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical relationship which relates the reflectivity to the refractivity spectrum. The agreement between the measurements and the theory is excellent and shows that the radar returns in clear air are the result of, and can be quantitatively described as being from, fine-scale refractivity fluctuations due to turbulent mixing. Further, the data give strong support to the -5/3 spectral decay of the refractivity spectrum in the inertial subrange.

On Greenstadt's binary index criterion.

The Greenstadt-type criterion for distinguishing between laminar and 'pulsating' (i.e., irregular) bow shock crossings can be expressed as a critical angle between the shock normal and the magnetic field. When the field is more tangent to the shock plane than this critical angle, the shock is laminar. More importantly, the requirement of Galilean invariance of the physics underlying such a criterion reveals that the Greenstadt p index must vary inversely as the solar wind velocity.

Formulation of a distortion index based on peak compressor pressure ratios

In order to effectively use a compressor face total-pressure distortion index as a measure of inlet-engine compatibility, a correlation of distortion amplitude with stall margin must be developed with minimal scatter. A recent analysis of data recorded in extensive distortion screen tests with the J85-GE-13 turbojet engine has resulted in a correlation based on compressor discharge pressure ratioed to the minimum pressure at the compressor face. Simply by determining compressor stall lines with a single hub radial distortion pattern, a single tip radial pattern, and with undistorted inflow, the overall compressor pressure ratio at stall for even the most complex distortion pattern was found to be predictable.

Energy: A Continuing Bibliography with Indexes, May 1974

A bibliography on energy is reported, the bibliography, Energy: A Continuing Bibliography With Indexes, contains 232 reports, journal articles, and other documents originally announced in STAR, and IAA between Jan. 1, and Mar. 31, 1974. The coverage includes regional, national and international energy systems; research and development of fuels and other sources of energy, and energy conversion, transport, transmission, distribution and storage, with special emphasis on use of hydrogen and of solar energy. Also included are methods of locating or using new energy resources. Of special interest is energy for heating, lighting, for powering aircraft, surface vehicles, or other machinery.

A comparison of the geomagnetic ap index with fluctuations in B and V - Mariner 5

Mariner 5 data for the interplanetary magnetic field and the solar wind velocity are compared with terrestrial ap values for the period from June 15, to August 22, 1967. It is concluded that fluctuations in the interplanetary magnetic field are more closely coupled to geomagnetic activity as measured with the ap index than are fluctuations in the solar wind velocity. During periods of high-level activity, the data support the Dessler and Walters (1964) model where the magnetic field is the primary causal agent of geomagnetic activity.

Refractive index of He in the region 920-1910 A

The refractive index of He has been determined in the region 920-1910 A by measurements of wavelength shifts in a 3-m spectrograph alternately filled with He and evacuated. Differential pumping systems were used to allow operation of the light source at conveniently low pressures. Several plates were measured and analyzed in order to reduce statistical errors. The results at 919 A agree with the theory within 1%, i.e., less than the experimental error.

Ultraviolet complex refractive index of Martian dust Laboratory measurements of terrestrial analogs

The optical complex index of refraction of four candidate Martian surface materials has been determined between 0.185 and 0.4 microns using a modified Kubelka-Munk scattering theory. The cadidate materials were limonite, andesite, montmorillonite, and basalt. The effect of scattering has been removed from the results. Also presented are diffuse reflection and transmission data on these samples.

Specific surface area as a maturity index of lunar fines

Mature surface fines have an equilibrium specific surface area of about 0.6 sq m/g the equivalent mean particle size being about 3 microns. The adsorption behavior of inert gases (reversible isotherms) indicates that the particles are also nonporous in the size range of pores from 10 to 3000 A. Apparently, in mature soils there is a balance in the forces which cause fining, attrition, pore filling, and growth of lunar dust grains. Immature, lightly irradiated soils usually have coarser grains which reduce in size as aging proceeds. The specific surface area, determined by nitrogen or krypton sorption at 77 K, is a valuable index of soil maturity.
