Vehicle Design Data Format and Process for a Complete TARIS and OLTARIS Radiation Analysis for Designers and Engineers

Protecting astronauts from space radiation is a complex task when it comes to modeling and simulation. This document shows what information is needed from a spacecraft designer using CAD (Computer-Assisted Design) at each phase of the design to enable the engineers to evaluate the design phase against space radiation limits to determine the suitability of the design for space flight. The current personal exposure limits are listed in NASA STD-3001. A proxy to determine the REID (Radiation Exposure Induced Death) in NASA STD-3001 is the whole body effective dose equivalent (E or effective dose). For short-term tissue effects, organ-averaged gray equivalent (G (sub T)) is used. The TARIS (Tool for the Assessment of Radiation In Space - for LaRC (Langley Research Center) engineers) and OLTARIS (On-Line TARIS) - for designers) systems are used to generate these response functions. The E can use ICRP60 or NASA Q-values. A possible space radiation design basis environment for short-term tissue effects is described and used in all analyses. A single space vehicle was designed with three astronaut configurations and two of those configurations were used in a storm shelter thickness perturbation analysis. Conversion of the data from the CAD model to input necessary for TARIS and OLTARIS is also discussed in detail with relevant examples.

Using SFOC to fly the Magellan Venus mapping mission

Traditionally, spacecraft flight operations at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have been performed by teams of spacecraft experts utilizing ground software designed specifically for the current mission. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory set out to reduce the cost of spacecraft mission operations by designing ground data processing software that could be used by multiple spacecraft missions, either sequentially or concurrently. The Space Flight Operations Center (SFOC) System was developed to provide the ground data system capabilities needed to monitor several spacecraft simultaneously and provide enough flexibility to meet the specific needs of individual projects. The Magellan Spacecraft Team utilizes the SFOC hardware and software designed for engineering telemetry analysis, both real-time and non-real-time. The flexibility of the SFOC System has allowed the spacecraft team to integrate their own tools with SFOC tools to perform the tasks required to operate a spacecraft mission. This paper describes how the Magellan Spacecraft Team is utilizing the SFOC System in conjunction with their own software tools to perform the required tasks of spacecraft event monitoring as well as engineering data analysis and trending.

Report on Automated Semantic Analysis of Scientific and Engineering Codes

The loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter due to a software error reveals what insiders know: software development is difficult and risky because, in part, current practices do not readily handle the complex details of software. Yet, for scientific software development the MCO mishap represents the tip of the iceberg; few errors are so public, and many errors are avoided with a combination of expertise, care, and testing during development and modification. Further, this effort consumes valuable time and resources even when hardware costs and execution time continually decrease. Software development could use better tools! This lack of tools has motivated the semantic analysis work explained in this report. However, this work has a distinguishing emphasis; the tool focuses on automated recognition of the fundamental mathematical and physical meaning of scientific code. Further, its comprehension is measured by quantitatively evaluating overall recognition with practical codes. This emphasis is necessary if software errors-like the MCO error-are to be quickly and inexpensively avoided in the future. This report evaluates the progress made with this problem. It presents recommendations, describes the approach, the tool's status, the challenges, related research, and a development strategy.

Testing and Analysis of NEXT Ion Engine Discharge Cathode Assembly Wear

Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to predict the wear of the discharge cathode keeper in the NASA Evolutionary Xenon Thruster. The ion current to the keeper was found to be highly dependent upon the beam current, and the average beam current density was nearly identical to that of the NSTAR thruster for comparable beam current density. The ion current distribution was highly peaked toward the keeper orifice. A deterministic wear assessment predicted keeper orifice erosion to the same diameter as the cathode tube after processing 375 kg of xenon. A rough estimate of discharge cathode assembly life limit due to sputtering indicated that the current design exceeds the qualification goal of 405 kg. Probabilistic wear analysis showed that the plasma potential and the sputter yield contributed most to the uncertainty in the wear assessment. It was recommended that fundamental experimental and modeling efforts focus on accurately describing the plasma potential and the sputtering yield.

Analysis of whisker-toughened ceramic components - A design engineer's viewpoint

The analysis of components fabricated from whisker-toughened ceramic matrix composites requires a departure from the 'factor-of-safety' design philosophy prevalent in the design of metallic structural component, which are more tolerant of flaws. A public-domain computer algorithm has been developed which, in conjunction with a general-purposed FEM program, can predict the fast-fracture reliability of a structural component under multiaxial loading conditions. The present version of the algorithm, designated 'Toughened Ceramics Analysis and Reliability Evaluation of Structures', accounts for material symmetry imposed by whisker orientation; the processes of crack deflection and crack pinning are also addressed.

Compilation and utilization of a sorghum transcriptome compendium for gene regulatory network analysis and crop trait engineering

Sorghum bicolor (Sorghum) is a drought and heat tolerant C4 grass crop used to produce grain, forage, biofuels, and other bioproducts. Genetic improvement of sorghum hybrid crops is aided by a large and diverse germplasm, sorghum's diploid inbreeding genetics, and a relatively small genome that has facilitated genomic research. Over the past 20 years, the sorghum research community characterized the cytogenetic and recombinant landscapes of sorghum's 10 chromosomes, sequenced and annotated the sorghum genome, and used that information to identify genes/alleles that modulate flowering time, plant height, seed shattering, and other important traits. More recently, >1000 RNA-seq transcriptome profiles were collected from 15 sorghum genotypes to help understand the genetic basis of variation in growth and development of sorghum stems, tillers, roots, and leaves, and the regulation of biosynthetic pathways that produce epicuticular wax, dhurrin, and RFOs, compounds that contribute to sorghum's resilience. Transcriptome studies were designed to identify differentially expressed genes that are co-expressed during development or in response to a treatment to enable construction of gene regulatory networks. Co-expression and network analysis identified transcription factors and their cognate binding sites in target gene promoters and signaling pathways that modulate gene regulatory networks providing gene editing targets for further trait optimization. RNA-seq data from >20 experiments targeting sorghum organs, tissues, cell types, developmental stages, and responses to environmental conditions (i.e., diel, day-length, shading, water-deficit, temperature) has been compiled in a sorghum transcriptome compendium. The goal of this resource paper is to describe compendium content, accessibility, and a compendium data analysis pipeline and to illustrate the types of information that can be derived from the compendium with a focus on the elucidation of gene regulatory networks useful for guiding the improvement of sorghum traits through gene editing.

Fusing Quantitative Requirements Analysis with Model-based Systems Engineering

A vision is presented for fusing quantitative requirements analysis with model-based systems engineering. This vision draws upon and combines emergent themes in the engineering milieu. "Requirements engineering" provides means to explicitly represent requirements (both functional and non-functional) as constraints and preferences on acceptable solutions, and emphasizes early-lifecycle review, analysis and verification of design and development plans. "Design by shopping" emphasizes revealing the space of options available from which to choose (without presuming that all selection criteria have previously been elicited), and provides means to make understandable the range of choices and their ramifications. "Model-based engineering" emphasizes the goal of utilizing a formal representation of all aspects of system design, from development through operations, and provides powerful tool suites that support the practical application of these principles. A first step prototype towards this vision is described, embodying the key capabilities. Illustrations, implications, further challenges and opportunities are outlined.

Business Case Analysis for Artificial Intelligence-Large Language Model Technology Integration

AI-assisted processes are expected to enhance operational efficiency and improve decision-making, supporting the long-term economic viability of nuclear power plants. However, detailed business analyses of AI-generated cost savings are rarely performed. Given the recent industry interest in Large Language Model (LLM), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program has conducted a comprehensive business case analysis of LLM Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation in nuclear plant engineering workflows. The research employed three complementary business case approaches to evaluate impact of an LLM, using three representative engineering processes as use-cases: Boric Acid Corrosion (BAC) Evaluations, Maintenance Rule Evaluations, and 10 CFR 50.59 Screenings. Through detailed workload analyses and structured interviews, the study quantified significant efficiency improvements ranging from 11% to 59% across these processes. The research further considers how these efficiency gains could translate into tangible reliability improvements through enhanced engineering capacity. Analysis of historical plant trip data indicates that enabling engineers to focus on proactive reliability activities could provide substantial financial benefits through avoided outages, potentially generating greater value than the direct efficiency improvements alone. By documenting successful applications, implementation challenges, and strategic opportunities, this research provides nuclear utilities with a practical framework for evaluating the value of AI technology to support long-term operations through advanced digital technologies.

A System Engineering Approach in the Analysis of Ionic Liquids Properties [Thesis]

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) are ionic compounds, comprised of a cation and anion, in the liquid state at temperatures below 100 ⁰C. There are estimated 10 18 anion and cation combinations, which can create RTILs with unique properties. While the ionic character of RTILs made them attractive in a wide variety of electrochemical applications, their behaviors under electrochemical conditions are not well understood. In this research, we developed a RTIL testbed to investigate how RTILs differ from molecular solvents and electrolytes in electrochemical systems through the study of the effects of their morphology and chemical properties on the electron transfer processes. The test bed is composed of three modules: Electrochemistry, Material characterization, Computational. All modules have been completely developed, verified, and integrated and two of them, i.e., Electrochemistry and Material characterization have been validated in this dissertation. To evaluate the proposed system, experiments were performed on solutions of a redox active species in RTILs. It was found that it is possible to investigate the RTIL's morphology and chemical properties' impact on the electron transfer processes of the solute based on the outcomes and evaluations of tests performed by the RTIL testbed.
