Radiation by a laser-driven flying-focus electron wave packet

An exact solution of the Dirac equation in the presence of an arbitrary electromagnetic plane wave is found, which corresponds to a focused electron wave packet, with the focus of the wave packet moving at the speed of light in the opposite direction of the average momentum of the electron wave packet (unless the plane wave is so intense to reflect the electron). The photon spectrum emitted by such an electron wave packet in the presence of a linearly polarized plane wave is studied both analytically and numerically. The spectrum is also compared with the one emitted by a single-momentum, plane-wave electron in the case of the electron being initially counterpropagating (on average for the flying-focus case) with the plane wave and within the locally constant field approximation. It is found that if the electron flying-focus wave packet is focused beyond a Compton wavelength, the angular distribution of the emitted radiation along the magnetic field of the electromagnetic plane wave is broader than for an electron with definite momentum. Corresponding the maximum value of the photon yield on the transverse plane is smaller in the flying-focus electron case. This could represent an experimental signature of a laser-driven flying-focus electron wave packet.

Phases of 2D massless QCD with qubit regularization

We investigate the possibility of reproducing the continuum physics of 2D S U ( N ) gauge theory coupled to a single flavor of massless Dirac fermion using qubit regularization. The continuum theory is described by N free fermions in the ultraviolet (UV) and a coset Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model in the infrared (IR). In this work, we first explore how well these features can be reproduced using the Kogut-Susskind (KS) Hamiltonian with a finite-dimensional link Hilbert space and a generalized Hubbard coupling. We do this by analyzing the renormalization group (RG) flow diagram of the continuum theory and identifying important phases of the theory. Using strong coupling expansions, we show that our lattice model exhibits a gapped dimer phase and a spin-chain phase. Furthermore, for N = 2 , using tensor network methods, we show that there is a second-order phase transition between these two phases, which we identify as the critical surface of the continuum theory that connects the IR and UV fixed points. In the IR, we identify the critical theory at the transition as the expected S U ( 2 ) 1 WZW model. Lastly, we argue that modifications of our model may allow the study of the UV physics of free fermions. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Single Kerr-Schild metric for Taub-NUT instanton

It is shown that a complex coordinate transformation maps the Taub-Newman-Unti-Tamburino instanton metric to a Kerr-Schild metric. This metric involves a semi-infinite line defect as the gravitational analog of the Dirac string, much like the original metric. Moreover, it facilitates three versions of classical double copy correspondence with the self-dual dyon in electromagnetism, one of which involves a nonlocal operator. The relevance to the Newman-Janis algorithm is briefly noted. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Anomalous conductivity due to relativistic Landau quantization

Here we use a recently developed kinetic model derived from the Dirac equation, in order to study electromagnetic wave propagation in superstrong magnetic fields, such as in magnetars, where relativistic Landau quantization is prominent. The leading contribution to the conductivity tensor in such a plasma is calculated. It is found that the electron Hall current has an anomalous contribution, in the quantum relativistic regime, where the effective particle energy has a significant contribution from the diamagnetic and Zeeman energy. As a result, a new quantum resonance frequency appears, and the dispersion relation for the left- and right-hand polarized modes are strongly modified for long and moderate wavelengths. The implications for magnetar physics are discussed.

Dimensionality-Mediated Semimetal-Semiconductor Transition in Ultrathin PtTe 2 Films

Platinum ditelluride (PtTe2), a type-II Dirac semimetal, remains semimetallic in ultrathin films down to just two tri-atomic layers (TLs) with a negative gap of -0.36 eV. Further reduction of the film thickness to a single TL induces a Lifshitz electronic transition to a semiconductor with a large positive gap of +0.79 eV. This transition is evidenced by experimental band structure mapping of films prepared by layer-resolved molecular beam epitaxy, and by comparing the data to first-principles calculations using a hybrid functional. The results demonstrate a novel electronic transition at the two-dimensional limit through film thickness control.

Unhinging the Surfaces of Higher-Order Topological Insulators and Superconductors

Here, we show that the chiral Dirac and Majorana hinge modes in three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) and superconductors (HOTSCs) can be gapped while preserving the protecting C$_{2n}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry upon the introduction of non-Abelian surface topological order. In both cases, the topological order on a single side surface breaks time-reversal symmetry, but appears with its time-reversal conjugate on alternating sides in a C$_{2n}\mathcal{T}$ preserving pattern. In the absence of the HOTI/HOTSC bulk, such a pattern necessarily involves gapless chiral modes on hinges between C$_{2n}\mathcal{T}$-conjugate domains. However, using a combination of K -matrix and anyon condensation arguments, we show that on the boundary of a 3D HOTI/HOTSC these topological orders are fully gapped and hence “anomalous.” Our results suggest that new patterns of surface and hinge states can be engineered by selectively introducing topological order only on specific surfaces.

Honeycomb-Lattice Mott Insulator on Tantalum Disulphide

Effects of electron many-body interactions amplify in an electronic system with a narrow bandwidth opening a way to exotic physics. A narrow band in a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice is particularly intriguing as combined with Dirac bands and topological properties but the material realization of a strongly interacting honeycomb lattice described by the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model has not been identified. Here we report a novel approach to realize a 2D honeycomb-lattice narrow-band system with strongly interacting 5$\textit{d}$ electrons. Iin this work, we engineer a well-known triangular lattice 2D Mott insulator 1$\textit{T}$ – TaS 2 into a honeycomb lattice utilizing an adsorbate superstructure. Potassium (K) adatoms at an optimum coverage deplete one-third of the unpaired $\textit{d}$ electrons and the remaining electrons form a honeycomb lattice with a very small hopping. Ab initio calculations show extremely narrow $Z_2$ topological bands mimicking the Kane-Mele model. Electron spectroscopy detects an order of magnitude bigger charge gap confirming the substantial electron correlation as confirmed by dynamical mean field theory. It could be the first artificial Mott insulator with a finite spin Chern number.

CsV 3 Sb 5 : A $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Topological Kagome Metal with a Superconducting Ground State

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV 3 Sb 5 and RbV 3 Sb 5 , CsV 3 Sb 5 crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV 3 Sb 5 , demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T c = 2.5 K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density-functional theory, which categorize CsV 3 Sb 5 as a Z 2 topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level (E F ), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high-temperature charge density wavelike instability. Finally, the implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Rare Earth Engineering in R Mn 6 Sn 6 ( R = Gd–Tm, Lu) Topological Kagome Magnets

Exploration of the topological quantum materials with electron correlation is at the frontier of physics, as the strong interaction may give rise to new topological phases and transitions. Here we report that a family of kagome magnets RMn 6 Sn 6 manifest the quantum transport properties analogical to those in the quantum-limit Chern magnet TbMn 6 Sn 6 . The topological transport in the family, including quantum oscillations with nontrivial Berry phase and large anomalous Hall effect arising from Berry curvature field, points to the existence of Chern gapped Dirac fermions. Furthermore, our observation demonstrates a close relationship between rare-earth magnetism and topological electron structure, indicating the rare-earth elements can effectively engineer the Chern quantum phase in kagome magnets.

Signatures of Weyl Fermion Annihilation in a Correlated Kagome Magnet

The manipulation of topological states in quantum matter is an essential pursuit of fundamental physics and next-generation quantum technology. Here we report the magnetic manipulation of Weyl fermions in the kagome spin-orbit semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , observed by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. We demonstrate the exchange collapse of spin-orbit-gapped ferromagnetic Weyl loops into paramagnetic Dirac loops under suppression of the magnetic order. We further observe that topological Fermi arcs disappear in the paramagnetic phase, suggesting the annihilation of exchange-split Weyl points. In conclusion, our findings indicate that magnetic exchange collapse naturally drives Weyl fermion annihilation, opening new opportunities for engineering topology under correlated order parameters.

Realizing Kagome Band Structure in Two-Dimensional Kagome Surface States of RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho)

Here, we report angle resolved photoemission experiments on a newly discovered family of kagome metals RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho). Intrinsic bulk states and surface states of the vanadium kagome layer are differentiated from those of other atomic sublattices by the real-space resolution of the measurements with a small beam spot. Characteristic Dirac cone, saddle point, and flat bands of the kagome lattice are observed. Our results establish the two-dimensional (2D) kagome surface states as a new platform to investigate the intrinsic kagome physics.

Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States in a Superconductor with Topological Z 2 Bands

A Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) state is a localized in-gap state induced by a magnetic impurity in a superconductor. Recent experiments used an STM tip to manipulate the exchange coupling between an Fe adatom and the FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 superconductor possessing a Z 2 nontrivial band structure with topological surface states. As the tip moves close to the single Fe adatom, the energy of the in-gap state modulates and exhibits a zero-energy crossing followed by an unusual return to zero energy, which cannot be understood by coupling the magnetic impurity to the superconducting topological surface Dirac cone. Here, we numerically and analytically study the YSR states in superconductors with nontrivial Z 2 bands and show the emergence of the two zero-energy crossings as a function of the exchange coupling between the magnetic impurity and the bulk states. We analyze the role of the topological surface states and compare in-gap states to systems with trivial Z 2 bands. The spin polarization of the YSR states is further studied for future experimental measurement.

Reentrant Correlated Insulators in Twisted Bilayer Graphene at 25 T ( 2 π Flux)

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is remarkable for its topological flat bands, which drive strongly interacting physics at integer fillings, and its simple theoretical description facilitated by the Bistritzer-MacDonald Hamiltonian, a continuum model coupling two Dirac fermions. Because of the large moiré unit cell, TBG offers the unprecedented opportunity to observe reentrant Hofstadter phases in laboratory-strength magnetic fields near 25 T. This Letter is devoted to magic angle TBG at 2π flux where the magnetic translation group commutes. Here we use a newly developed gauge-invariant formalism to determine the exact single-particle band structure and topology. We find that the characteristic TBG flat bands reemerge at 2π flux, but, due to the magnetic field breaking C 2z T, they split and acquire Chern number ±1. We show that reentrant correlated insulating states appear at 2π flux driven by the Coulomb interaction at integer fillings, and we predict the characteristic Landau fans from their excitation spectrum.

Topological Hall Effect Anisotropy in Kagome Bilayer Metal Fe 3 Sn 2

Kagome lattice materials attract growing interest for their topological properties and flat-bands in electronic structure. We present comprehensive study on the anisotropy and out-of-plane electric transport in Fe 3 Sn 2 , a metal with bilayer of Fe kagome planes and with massive Dirac fermions that features high-temperature non-collinear magnetic structure and magnetic skyrmions. For the electrical current path along the c-axis, in micron-size crystals, we found a large topological Hall effect (THE) over a wide temperature range down to spin-glass state. Twofold and fourfold angular magnetoresistance are observed for different magnetic phases, reflecting the competition of magnetic interactions and magnetic anisotropy in kagome lattice that preserve robust topological Hall effect for inter kagomebilayer currents. This information provides new insight into the anisotropy in Fe 3 Sn 2 , of interest in skyrmionicbubble application-related micron-size devices.

Revealing the Origin of Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Fe-Chalcogenide Superconductor FeTe 1 - x Se x

We report that recently evidence has emerged in the topological superconductor Fe-chalcogenide FeTe 1-x Se x for time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), the nature of which has strong implications on the Majorana zero modes (MZM) discovered in this system. It remains unclear however whether the TRSB resides in the topological surface state (TSS) or in the bulk, and whether it is due to an unconventional TRSB superconducting order parameter or an intertwined order. Here by performing in superconducting FeTe 1-x Se x crystals both surface-magneto-optic-Kerr effect (SMOKE) measurements using a Sagnac interferometer and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements, we pinpoint the TRSB to the TSS, where we also detect a Dirac gap. Further, we observe surface TRSB in non-superconducting FeTe 1-x Se x of nominally identical composition, indicating that TRSB arises from an intertwined surface ferromagnetic (FM) order. The observed surface FM bears striking similarities to the two-dimensional (2D) FM found in 2D van der Waals crystals, and is highly sensitive to the exact chemical composition, thereby providing a means for optimizing the conditions for Majorana particles that are useful for robust quantum computing.

Topological Exact Flat Bands in Two-Dimensional Materials under Periodic Strain

Here we study flat bands and their topology in 2D materials with quadratic band crossing points under periodic strain. In contrast to Dirac points in graphene, where strain acts as a vector potential, strain for quadratic band crossing points serves as a director potential with angular momentum . We prove that when the strengths of the strain fields hit certain “magic” values, exact flat bands with emerge at charge neutrality point in the chiral limit, in strong analogy to magic angle twisted-bilayer graphene. These flat bands have ideal quantum geometry for the realization of fractional Chern insulators, and they are always fragile topological. The number of flat bands can be doubled for certain point group, and the interacting Hamiltonian is exactly solvable at integer fillings. We further demonstrate the stability of these flat bands against deviations from the chiral limit, and discuss possible realization in 2D materials.

Topological Circular Dichroism in Chiral Multifold Semimetals

Uncovering the physical contents of the nontrivial topology of quantum states is a critical problem in condensed matter physics. Here, we study the topological circular dichroism in chiral semimetals using linear response theory and first-principles calculations. We show that, when the low-energy spectrum respects emergent SO(3) rotational symmetry, topological circular dichroism is forbidden for Weyl fermions, and thus is unique to chiral multifold fermions. This is a result of the selection rule that is imposed by the emergent symmetry under the combination of particle-hole conjugation and spatial inversion. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that topological circular dichroism occurs in CoSi for photon energy below about 0.2 eV. In conclusion, our Letter demonstrates the existence of a response property of unconventional fermions that is fundamentally different from the response of Dirac and Weyl fermions, motivating further study to uncover other unique responses.

EuCd 2 ⁢As 2 : A Magnetic Semiconductor

EuCd 2 ⁢As 2 is now widely accepted as a topological semimetal in which a Weyl phase is induced by an external magnetic field. Here, we challenge this view through firm experimental evidence using a combination of electronic transport, optical spectroscopy, and excited-state photoemission spectroscopy. We show that the EuCd 2 ⁢As 2 is in fact a semiconductor with a gap of 0.77 eV. We show that the externally applied magnetic field has a profound impact on the electronic band structure of this system. This is manifested by a huge decrease of the observed band gap, as large as 125 meV at 2 T, and, consequently, by a giant redshift of the interband absorption edge. However, the semiconductor nature of the material remains preserved. EuCd 2 ⁢As 2 is therefore a magnetic semiconductor rather than a Dirac or Weyl semimetal, as suggested by ab initio computations carried out within the local spin-density approximation.
