Structural chemistry of Au(III)-substituted Ba2YCu3O(7-delta)

A series of gold-substituted perovskite superconductors Ba2Y(Cu/1-x/Aux)3O(7-delta)(x = 0-0.1) was synthesized. For x = 0.1, there was no change in the a and b lattice parameters (a = 3.826 A and b = 3.889 A), but a 0.06 A c-axis expansion to 11.75 A was observed. Substituted gold was found to be trivalent by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Replacing Cu(1) in the copper oxide chain with a slight reordering of oxygen is consistent with c-axis expansion. The formal charge of the site remains trivalent, while remaining Cu in the chains is reduced to Cu(I), resulting in an oxygen stoichiometry of less than 7. Finally, no large effect on Tc is observed (Tc = 89 K for x = 0.10), in contrast to the effect of a number of other metal ion dopants. These results are discussed relative to the chemistry of Au(III) and to the use of the metal in structures containing gold and ceramic superconductors.

An experimental investigation of delta wing vortex flow with and without external jet blowing

A visual and quantitative study of the vortex flow field over a 70-deg delta wing with an external jet blowing parallel to and at the leading edge was conducted. In the experiment, the vortex core was visually marked with TiCl4, and LDA was used to measure the velocity parallel and normal to the wing surface. It is found that jet blowing moved vortex breakdown farther downstream from its natural position and influenced the breakdown characteristics.

A flow visualization and aerodynamic force data evaluation of spanwise blowing on full and half span delta wings

A wind-tunnel investigation has been performed to quantify the effects of a jet on the leading-edge vortices generated by a 70-deg-sweep sharp-edged delta wing at low Reynolds numbers. Efforts were made ot optimize the jet nozzle position with respect to maximum lift increments. Both half-span force-balance testing and half- and full-span flow visualization tests were conducted. Two angles of attack were investigated, 30 and 35 deg, at Reynolds numbers of 150,000 and 200,000. Aerodynamic enhancement, including lift and drag gains of about 20 and 17 percent respectively, were measured. Results indicate an optimum jet nozzle location to be close to the leading edge, tangent to the upper wing surface, and in a direction aligned parallel to the leading edge. Nozzle interference effects, especially near the apex, were not negligible.

Numerical study of the effect of tangential leading edge blowing on delta wing vortical flow

A numerical simulation of tangential blowing along the leading edge of a delta wing is analyzed as a means of controlling the position and strength of the leading-edge vortices. The computation is done by numerical solutions of the three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical results are shown to compare favorably with experimental measurements. It is found that the use of tangential leading-edge blowing at low to moderate angles of attack tends to reduce the pressure peaks associated with leading-edge vortices and to increase the suction peak around the leading edge, such that the integrated value of the surface pressure remains about the same.

Rovibrational intensities for the Delta V = 1 bands of the X 3Sigma(-) NH radical - Experiment and theory

The vibrational transition dipole moment for the highly reactive radical species NH in its ground electronic state is obtained via the Herman-Wallis effect manifest in emission spectra produced in a plasma reactor. The results of these experiments on the five lowest Delta V = 1 bands are in good agreement with high quality ab initio calculations of the electric dipole moment function.

Doping directed at the oxygen sites in Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) - The effect of sulfur, fluorine, and chlorine

The effect of three dopants directed at the oxygen sites in Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-delta) have been investigated: sulfur, fluorine, and chlorine. Single-phase material has been obtained up to a (nominal) replacement of about 1 percent of the oxygen. Although the lattice parameters are unchanged, all dopants raise Tc (very slightly), sharpen the resistive transition, reduce the normal state resistivity, and very substantially increase the (magnetically determined) fraction of the material that is superconducting. All of these results differ qualitatively from those obtained with dopants directed at other locations in the 123 structure, and it is suggested that small additions of sulfur, fluorine, or chlorine may help to stabilize the ideal 123 stoichiometry.

Novel photovoltaic delta-doped GaAs superlattice structure

An asymmetric delta-doped GaAs structure is described which exhibits novel photovoltaic effects and low-intensity nonlinear optics. Of particular interest in this kind of structure is the ability to design the electrooptical and nonlinear optical properties and the material response time over a wide range by appropriate design of the doping profile.

Thickening oscillation of a delta wing using Navier-Stokes and Navier-displacement equations

The problem of unsteady, supersonic, locally conical, vortical flow around a delta wing undergoing thickening oscillation is solved using the unsteady, thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations and the unsteady linearized Navier-displacement equations. The unsteady, thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved using the implicit approximate-factorization finite-volume scheme to compute the conservative components of the flow vector field. With the conservative components known at any time step, the linearized, Navier-displacement equations are solved using the alternating, direction-implicit scheme to obtain the grid points displacements due to known displacement boundary conditions. A grid-displacements limiter, in the form of a low mesh Reynolds number, is used to limit grid-folding in regions of highly reversed flow.

Georeferencing airborne imagery over new deltas in Louisiana

An experiment to study the hypothesis that winter cold fronts are more important that violent summer storms in moving sediment in midlatitude coastal river deltas. The experiment is based on Calibrated Airborne Multispectral Scanner (CAMS) data. A new approach for the georeferencing of aircraft imagery has been developed for use in this experiment. The software for the approach uses the aircraft inertial navigation data and is able to automatically map a three-channel 1600 line file through a 90 deg rotation in less than 14 minutes. Results from tests of the technique show rms errors of less than 2/3 of a pixel.

Surface pressure distributions on a delta wing undergoing large amplitude pitching oscillations

Wind tunnel experiments were performed on a 70 deg sweep delta wing to determine the effect of a sinusoidal pitching motion on the pressure field on the suction side of the wing. Twelve pressure taps were placed from 35 to 90 percent of the chord, at 60 percent of the local semi-span. Pressure coefficients were measured as a function of Reynolds number and pitch rate. The pressure coefficient was seen to vary at approximately the same frequency as the pitching frequency. The relative pressure variation at each chord location was comparable for each case. The average pressure distribution through each periodic motion was near the static distribution for the average angle of attack. Upon comparing the upstroke and downstroke pressures for a specific angle of attack, the downstroke pressures were slightly larger. Vortex breakdown was seen to have the most significant effect at the 40 to 45 percent chord location, where a decrease in pressure was apparent.

A streamwise upwind algorithm applied to vortical flow over a delta wing

Improvements were made to a streamwise upwind algorithm so that it can be used for calculating flows with vortices. A calculation is shown of flow over a delta wing at an angle of attack. The laminar, thin layer, Navier-Stokes equations are used for the calculation. The results are compared with another upwind method, a central differencing method, and experimental data. The present method shows improvements in accuracy and convergence properties.

Prediction of forces and moments for flight vehicle control effectors. Part 2: An analysis of delta wing aerodynamic control effectiveness in ground effect

Many types of hypersonic aircraft configurations are currently being studied for feasibility of future development. Since the control of the hypersonic configurations throughout the speed range has a major impact on acceptable designs, it must be considered in the conceptual design stage. Here, an investigation of the aerodynamic control effectiveness of highly swept delta planforms operating in ground effect is presented. A vortex-lattice computer program incorporating a free wake is developed as a tool to calculate aerodynamic stability and control derivatives. Data generated using this program are compared to experimental data and to data from other vortex-lattice programs. Results show that an elevon deflection produces greater increments in C sub L and C sub M in ground effect than the same deflection produces out of ground effect and that the free wake is indeed necessary for good predictions near the ground.

Photoresponse of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) granular and epitaxial superconducting thin films

The response is reported of thin films of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) with either a very grainy or a smooth epitaxial morphology to visible radiation. SrTiO3 substrates were employed for both types of films. The grainy films were formed by sequential multi-layer electron beam evaporation while the epitaxial films were formed by laser ablation. Both films were patterned into H shaped detectors via a negative photolithographic process employing a Br/ethanol etchant. The bridge region of the H was 50 microns wide. The patterned films formed by laser ablation and sequential evaporation had critical temperatures of 74 K and 72 K respectively. The bridge was current biased and illuminated with chopped He-Ne laser radiation and the voltage developed in response to the illumination was measured. A signal was detected only above the critical temperature and the peak of the response coincided with the resistive transition for both types of films although the correspondence was less exact for the grainy film. The details of the responses and their analysis are presented.

Superconductivity in 2-2-3 Y2Ba2Cu3O(sub 8+ delta)

Researchers synthesized a new high T(sub c) 2-2-3 superconductor (Y2Ba2Cu3O8+delta) by a special preparation technique and characterized it by ac-susceptibility measurements. Diamagnetism and Meissner effect sets in at low fields and superconducting transition onsets at 90 K. The systematic investigation of the real and imaginary components of ac-susceptibility as a function of temperature and applied ac magnetic field reveals that the magnetic behavior is that of a granular type superconductor.

Synthesis and structural chemistry of Au(III)-substituted Ba2YCu3O(7-delta)

For x = 0.1, there was no change in the a and b lattice parameters (a = 3.826 A and b = 3.889 A) but a 0.06 A c axis expansion to 11.75 A was observed. The formal charge of the site remains trivalent; remaining Cu in the chains may be reduced resulting in an oxygen stoichiometry is less than or equal to 7. A small effect on T(sub c)(89 K for x = 0.10) is observed upon gold substitution.

XANES and EXAFS study of Au-substituted YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

The near-edge structure (XANES) of the Au L3 and Cu K edges of YBa2Au(0.3)Cu(2.7)O(7-delta) was studied. X ray diffraction suggests that Au goes on the Cu(1) site and XANES shows that this has little effect on the oxidation state of the remaining copper. The gold L3 edge develops a white line feature whose position lies between that of trivalent gold oxide (Au2O3) and monovalent potassium gold cyanide (KAu(CN)2) and whose intensity relative to the edge step is smaller than in the two reference compounds. The L3 EXAFS for Au in the superconductor resembles that of Au2O3. However, differences in the envelope of the Fourier filtered component for the first shell suggest that the local structure of the Au in the superconductor is not equivalent to Au2O3.

Current operational practice for the Delta second stage

At the end of operation for the Delta launch vehicle's second-stage propellant tankage, 250 lb of propellants remain. Analyses of on-orbit breakups that may have been caused by fuel tank overpressurization have led to the adoption of a restart operational policy in which the engine is fired for as long as necessary to ensure that as much oxidizer as possible is vented from the tank; tank pressures are thereby reduced to about 75 psi. None of the 12 experimentally restarted stages have broken up since 1981.

Direct simulation of hypersonic rarefied flow about a delta wing

Three-dimensional hypersonic rarefied flow about a delta wing at angle of incidence has been studied using the direct simulation Monte Carlo technique. Results are obtained for a transitional flow case which has been investigated in a nitrogen wind-tunnel experiment. The simulations are performed using a nonreacting, single-species gas model that accounts for rotational and vibrational internal energies. The computations yield an attached leeside flow associated with supersonic expansion over the leeside of the wing. Results are presented for the computed flowfield and surface quantities and overall aerodynamic coefficients.
