IImprove hydrogen sorption kinetics of MgH2 by doping carbon-encapsulated iron-nickel nanoparticles

Magnesium hydride (MgH2) with excellent hydrogen storage kinetics is important for the wide application of hydrogen energy. Herein, to accelerate the sorption kinetics of MgH2 and lower its dehydrogenation temperature, we design and prepare a carbon film coated dual transition metal alloy, the Fe0.64Ni0.36@C composite with a coreshell structure, and employ it as an additive to synthesize MgH2–Fe0.64Ni0.36@C system by ball-milling and hydriding combustion method. In contrast to pure MgH2, the initial hydrogen release temperature of the MgH2–Fe0.64Ni0.36@C composite lowers to 250°C from 480°C and the composite can absorb 5.18 wt% H2 within 20 min (150°C, 3 MPa H2). More importantly, the apparent activation energy of the dehydrogenation for decomposition of Fe0.64Ni0.36@C-doped MgH2 reduced from 162.8 ± 8.3 kJ/mol to 86.9 ± 4.6 kJ/mol. It is believed that the Fe@C and Mg2Ni/Mg2NiH4 formed on the surface of Mg/MgH2 act as intermediates of electron transfer between Mg2+ and H–, which synergistically enhanced the hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics properties of the MgH2. Moreover, the MgH2 co-doped with the multiple in-situ formed active particles shows excellent cycling performance, indicative of potential application in practical hydrogen storage in the near future.

Synergistic role of Sn-doping on the thermal and electrical properties of sinnerite Cu 6 As 4 S 9

Sinnerite Cu 6 As 4 S 9 has been identified as a promising material for optoelectronic applications, with potential for other energy-related applications; however, knowledge of the electrical and thermal properties as well as the mechanisms underlying transport in sinnerite is lacking. Here, we present an investigation of the synthesis, structural, thermal and electrical transport properties of stoichiometric and Sn-doped Cu 6 As 4 S 9 . Sinnerite has a triclinic lattice structure, with highly distorted local atomic coordination environments that, in part, results in its complex structure and bonding. Our results and analyses indicate As 4s 2 lone pair-induced distortions and strong lattice anharmonicity that leads to a relatively short phonon mean free path, resulting in intrinsically very low thermal conductivity. The electrical resistivity for both compositions, Cu 6 As 4-x Sn x S 9 (x = 0, 0.2), are relatively high and varies little with temperature, typical of degenerate semiconductors. An increase in mobility and electrical conductivity was obtained by Sn doping in Cu 6 As 3.8 Sn 0.2 S 9 . This work demonstrates an effective route to synthesize bulk sinnerite as well as advances the knowledge of the properties of sinnerite, as this and other ternary chalcogenides continue to be of interest for potential technologically significant applications.

Nitrogen-doped carbon for selective pseudo-metal-free hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran: Importance of trace iron impurity

Heteroatoms-doped carbon materials have recently emerged as effective catalysts for various chemical and electrochemical reactions. The free of metals especially noble metals reduces cost and eliminates issues like sintering or leaching of metals at elevated temperatures in solvents. In this work, selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) is for the first time achieved over simple nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) catalysts. Further, at optimal reaction conditions, a 91% yield of DMF is obtained with excellent catalyst stability. Extensive characterization, including extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS), model reactions, basic data science analysis, and DFT calculations suggest that ppm of Fe in particular FeN 3 sites formed in pyrolysis, rather than non-metallic elements, drive key steps such as H 2 activation and deoxygenation of –OH during HMF HDO.

Enhancement of oxidative dehydrogenation over cerium-doped nickel niobium catalysts and analysis of batch-to-batch variability

Nickel based catalysts are inexpensive and efficient for use in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane. NiO doped with niobium and cerium shows increased ethylene production. Small amounts of Ce doped onto a NiNb catalyst led to increased Ni activity. The catalyst that had the highest ethylene production rate per g of catalyst had 1 atom% Ce, 86 at% Ni, and 13 at% Nb (1CeNiNb) while, if surface area is incorporated into the calculation, the catalyst that had the highest ethylene production rate per m 2 was the 0.5CeNiNb catalyst. The ethylene production rates of these Ce-containing catalysts are 27 %-127 % higher than those with NiNb alone previously reported in the literature. Here, to fully understand how cerium affects the NiNb catalyst, the Ce content and effect on active sites has been fully characterized over multiple batches. In doing this, light has been shed on batch-to-batch variability. Characterization techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, hydrogen temperature programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and methanol adsorption were used.

Highly selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone over a Pd-loaded N-doped carbon catalyst derived from chitosan

A highly stable Pd-loaded N-doped carbon catalyst (ACN pd ) for phenol hydrogenation was prepared from chitosan by hydrothermal carbonization. ACN pd does not require a reduction step before catalytic use due to the Pd in the as-prepared catalyst mainly exists in the form of Pd 0 (80%). The carbon support involves N-containing groups such as pyridinic nitrogen and pyrrolic nitrogen, which could provide basic sites to adsorb phenol effectively. The as-fabricated ACN pd shows high catalytic performance with turnover frequency (TOF) of 29.34 h -1 . Accordingly, a phenol conversion of 100% and a cyclohexanone selectivity of 99.1% are achieved in 5 h at 100 °C and 1 MPa H 2 . This outstanding performance is attributed to the synergetic effects of the Pd particles, the N-functional groups, and the Lewis acid sites on the support. The carbon support presents intrinsic Lewis acid sites due to its electrophilicity, and Pd doping further increases the strength of such acid sites as it causes electron-deficient structural features. Moreover, the Lewis acid sites inhibit the over-hydrogenation from cyclohexanone to cyclohexanol. This study provides new insights into the application of functional biomass-based carbon materials as catalyst supports.

Formation of functionally graded steel by laser powder bed fusion via in-situ carbon doping

Additive Manufacturing (AM) enables functional integration by combining multiple components into a single part to shorten assembly time, reduce weight, and improve performance. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is an important AM method due to excellent spatial resolution, surface finish, and material properties without the need for extensive post-processing. Functional integration could be enhanced by spatial tuning of properties, but LPBF cannot readily vary material composition. Here, this paper addresses a method to add spatial composition control by printing small quantities of dopants via liquid carrier prior to laser fusion. The impact of carbon black suspension added to select regions of a Stainless Steel 316 L powder bed on melt pool dimension, hardness, and porosity is reported. The distribution of the carbon between the doped and plain layers and the resulting spatial variation in hardness is measured. Optical microscopy and composition analysis show that the carbon dispersed uniformly within the layer of deposition and diffused as little as 50 μm in the build direction. Keyhole conditions dramatically increase the inter-layer transport of the dopant. The added carbon increased hardness by >50 %. Porosity increased in doped regions but remained below 1.5 % for the best processing parameters. These results demonstrate that the composition of LPBF parts could be controlled in 3-dimensions using a dopant that is soluble in the melt pool. Additional work will be required to evaluate different dopant materials and optimize processing conditions for full density, but microalloying with soluble dopants appears to be a plausible solution to enhance functional integration with LPBF.

Influence of atomic ordering and cerium doping on magnetostrictive Fe-Al alloys

Magnetostrictive iron-aluminum alloys can be a low-cost, mechanically stable alternative to iron-gallium and rare earth-iron alloys. The magnetostrictive performance of polycrystalline Fe-Al (alfenol) with 13–24 at. % Al was investigated, studying the role of compositional variation and thermal history. It was found that rapid cooling enhances the magnetostrictive response, and peak magnetostriction was found in Fe 78 Al 22 by high temperature annealing followed by quenching. Synchrotron diffraction enabled a direct correlation of magnetostrictive behavior and the transition from short-range order to long-range ordered cluster domains in the material which can be suppressed by rapid cooling. Following recent success of doping Fe-Ga with rare earth elements, we investigated the influence of Ce doping on improving magnetostriction and found that Fe-Al shows negligible solubility for cerium, inhibiting potential magnetostriction enhancement. In conclusion, our results illustrate the complex interplay between phase stability, ordering, and optimized magnetostrictive response.

Enhanced backscatter and unsaturated blue wavelength shifts in F-doped fused silica optical fibers exposed to extreme neutron radiation damage

Amorphous fused silica (a-SiO 2 ) optical fibers, with and without inscribed Bragg gratings, were interrogated using infrared (~1550 nm) optical backscatter reflectometry during ~25 days of intense neutron irradiation to a fast (energy > 0.1 MeV) neutron fluence of ~10 21 n/cm 2 , or ~1.5 atomic displacements per atom. The reflected light amplitudes in Ge-doped core telecommunications fiber dropped below detection limits (>15 dB attenuation) within 3 days of irradiation (~10 20 fast n/cm 2 ). Here, amplitudes from a pure silica core, F-doped silica cladding fiber reached equilibrium levels ~1.5–2 dB higher than pre-irradiation values, whereas Bragg gratings inscribed in the same fiber using a femtosecond laser (point-by-point method) suffered > 45 dB attenuation. Blue wavelength shifts were initially consistent with previous radiation-induced compaction models but increased linearly with increasing neutron fluence (no evidence of saturation) beyond 10 20 n/cm 2 and exceeded 0.6%, which corresponds to >1,000 °C drift if used to measure temperature changes.

Formation of multicomponent alloy particles in doped ceria under I 2+ ion irradiation and thermal annealing

Multicomponent alloys resembling the e-phase particles in nuclear fuel have the potential to immobilize 99 Tc in a stable waste form. Formation of such multicomponent alloys under extreme conditions is studied in a non-activated model system: CeO 2 doped with 2 wt% Mo, 1.5 wt% Ru, 0.75 wt% Pd, 0.5 wt% Re and 0.25 wt% Rh. The doped CeO 2 films were irradiated with I 2+ ions (610°C, 10 16 and 5×10 16 I 2+ /cm 2 ). For selected samples post-irradiation heat treatment was conducted (900°C, 1100°C). Analytical TEM revealed the formation of 5-20 nm precipitates containing Pd, Mo, and Re sometimes associated with cavities. Iodine was found to segregate to grain boundaries and cracks. After heat treatment at 1100°C, the CeO 2 matrix had recrystallized. Precipitates containing Pd, Mo, Re, and Ru were observed near the interface with the polycrystalline YSZ substrate. It follows that Pd is the most mobile element, followed by Mo and Re. Finally, while irradiation promotes precipitation, high-temperature effects are more significant.

Facile synthesis of co-doped Carbon nanofibers for supercapacitor applications

Here, in this study, the synthesis and electrochemical performance of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) co-doped with aluminum (Al) and nitrogen (N) and decorated with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are investigated. After electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, the nanofiber mats are coated with Al and ZnO precursors by the dip coating method and converted into carbon nanofibers by thermal treatments at 850 °C. Co-doping and nanoparticle decoration affect the efficacy of carbon nanofibers as supercapacitors. With a maximal specific capacitance of 206.28 Fg -1 , it is believed that our produced carbon nanofibers, which can effectively store the renewable energy resources required to meet the rising energy demand, offer superior electrochemical properties compared to traditional supercapacitor materials. The effective incorporation of Al, N, and ZnO into the CNF structure, in conjunction with enhanced electrochemical performance, represents a significant advancement in the development of functional carbon nanofibers.

Grain boundary relaxation in doped nano-grained aluminum

Here, simulation studies are done to understand the role of dopants that segregate preferentially to grain boundaries on the stability of nanocrystalline aluminum. A dopant design framework based on thermodynamic principles, is used to identify the specific dopant type with the highest potential to segregate to grain boundaries in nanocrystalline aluminum. Various elements are evaluated as potential dopants and magnesium is identified to have the highest tendency to segregate to grain boundaries and release the excess free energyleading to the relaxation of the grain boundaries. A systematic combination of atomic structure analysis is then done to correlate grain boundary relaxation and the mechanical response of the magnesium-doped nanocrystalline aluminum at ambient temperature. The atomistic simulations reveal that the preferential partitioning of magnesium dopants to the grain boundaries reduces the excess volume within this region which stabilizes the nanostructure. At low contents, the magnesium dopants are observed initially partition to the grain boundaries, but once saturation of the grain boundaries is reached, excess dopants are accommodated in the crystalline interiors. It is found that the addition of the magnesium dopants even in the dilute limit, enhances the strength of the nanocrystalline aluminum. The formation of large, disordered GBs in doped nanocrystalline aluminum under tensile load allowed it to accommodate the deformation and prohibit crack growth.

Anion and cation co-doping of Na 4 SnS 4 as sodium superionic conductors

Na based all-solid-state batteries are one of the most promising candidates for large-scale electrochemical energy storage owing to their low cost and outstanding safety properties. The key enabler of this technology is solid electrolyte with sufficiently high ionic conductivity at room temperature. In this work, the design, synthesis, characterization and testing of a series of novel fast Na-ion conductors, Na 4-x-y Sn 1-x A x S 4-y X y with aliovalent cation (P 5+ /Sb 5+ ) and anion substitutions (Cl - /Br - ) of the parent compound Na 4 SnS 4 are reported. The doped samples crystalize in a new phase with space group I4 1 /acd and show ionic conductivities that are one to four orders of magnitude higher than that of undoped Na 4 SnS 4 . R. t. conductivity of 0.64 mS cm -1 is achieved in Na 3.7 Sn 0.8 Sb 0.2 S 3.9 Cl 0.1 with a low activation energy of 0.26 eV. Furthermore, Rietveld refinement against high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data reveals that the distribution of the doping ions and the resulted Na vacancies are underlying cause of the enhanced conductivity.

Rationalizing nitrogen-doped secondary carbon particles for practical lithium-sulfur batteries

Nanostructured carbon host materials are widely used to improve both sulfur utilization rate and reaction kinetics in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, high complexity/cost of materials synthesis and difficulty in processing nano-materials into high-mass-loading electrodes are still significant barriers to the development of low-cost and high-energy Li-S batteries. In this study, we reported a generic and scalable synthesis approach to prepare nitrogen-doped secondary carbon particles. By using nitrogen-containing precursor as an integration reagent, the nanosized Ketjen Black particles were integrated into micron-size secondary ones and nitrogen-doped (NKB) simultaneously through a one-step heat treatment. With NKB as an example material, the effects of particle integration degree on the secondary particles’ structures, pore volume and connectivity, sulfur loading capability, and cell performance were studied and discussed. At an optimal integration condition, the NKB particles had significantly improved particle dimensions with well-maintained high specific surface area and pore volume. Here, contributed by the micron size and high pore volume, the NKB/S were successfully used for high-sulfur-loading cathodes (4–7 mg s /cm -2 ) and were able to deliver a specific capacity of ~1100 mAh g -1 at a low-porosity (50%) and lean-electrolyte conditions (E/S =4 µL/mg -1 ). Feasibility of the materials for practical use was validated through scaling up synthesis (40 g/batch), large-area electrode coating, and practical pouch cell (1.6 Ah) assembly and test.

Optimization of Annealing for WZ-Phase Removal and Densification in Sb-Doped CdSexTe1-x Solar Cells

The impact of high temperature annealing (HTA) treatments on the performance of Sb-doped CdSeTe solar cells containing a CdSe0.25Te0.75/CdTe front stack and a vapor transport (VT) deposited CdTe:Sb absorber was studied. The HTA treatment of the thermally evaporated CdSe0.25Te0.75/CdTe front stack converts the mixed-phase film into a single zinc blende structure through recrystallization of the photo-inactive wurtzite phase. Subsequently, HTA treatment of the full device stack after vapor transport deposition of CdTe:Sb absorber promotes Se-Te intermixing, reduces voids, densifies the full stack and enhances CdTe:Sb grain growth. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that the combined HTA treatments significantly improved film crystallinity, removed the WZ phase in the front stack, enhanced full-stack densification, reduced defect densities, and enhanced carrier dynamics. With HTA treatments, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) of CdSeTe:Sb devices increased from ~ 400 mV to >= 600 mV, and when combined with optimized CdCl2 treatment, VOC reached 849 mV. The net carrier concentrations (NA-ND) of representative devices were NA-ND = 1.5 x 10^15, 1.1 x 10^15, and 3.5 x 10^14 cm-3 for the no-HTA, moderate-HTA, and optimized high-VOC conditions, respectively. Since the highest VOC corresponds to the lowest apparent NA-ND, , which is similar to a Cu-doped-only CdSeTe solar cell (NA-ND ~= 2 x 10^14 cm-3), the data indicate that improved device performance does not result from increased electrically active Sb; instead, it points to structural improvement as the dominant effect of HTA. The findings demonstrate the potential of HTA treatments to improve the structural and electrical properties of CdSeXTe1-X solar cells.

High-throughput characterization of Lu-doped zirconia

Lu-doped zirconia (LuDZ) was reported in the 1960s to be a poor oxygen ion conductor. However, we identified this system as worthy of reexamination based on the results of a machine learning-based screen for promising oxygen ion conductors, further supported by a physical argument: because Lu is the heaviest and smallest of the lanthanides, it should offer the possibility of high conductivity due to its high polarizability and size compatibility with the zirconia structure. Here the relationship between dopant concentration and conductivity in the LuDZ system was determined using a high throughput experimental methodology in which spatially resolved conductivity was measured across a compositionally graded film, spanning from Zr 0.93 Lu 0.07 O 1.965 to Zr 0.82 Lu 0.18 O 1.91 . The conductivity broadly peaks with composition at 15 cation % Lu, coinciding with the approximate phase boundary of the fully stabilized cubic phase. The composition-dependent conductivity measurements reveal a surprising increase in activation energy for ion transport with increasing Lu content with no change in this trend at the composition of the conductivity maximum. The pre-exponential factor increases sharply with Lu content, but displays a distinct plateau once the conductivity maximum composition is attained. At 500 °C, the conductivity of Zr 0.85 Lu 0.15 O 1.925 is 2 × 10 –3 S cm –1 , approaching that of optimally doped Sc-stabilized zirconia, which has the highest reported conductivity among zirconia compounds. In comparison to other oxide ion conductors, Lu-stabilized zirconia offers the advantage over ceria of negligible electronic conductivity and is easier to process than (La,Sr)(Ga,Mg)O 3-δ .

Effect of single atom Platinum (Pt) doping and facet dependent on the electronic structure and light absorption of Lanthanum Titanium Oxide (La 2 Ti 2 O 7 ): A Density Functional Theory study

Charge generation and separation are two key processes for semiconductor photocatalysis. Here, we use Pt as a single atom catalyst to systematically examine the facet-dependent electronic band structure and light absorption of the layered perovskite-type wide-gap semiconductor, lanthanum titanium oxide (La 2 Ti 2 O 7 , LTO) by means of density functional theory simulations. In this study, it is found that single Pt atom doping of different LTO surfaces (here, (100), (101) and (001)) can not only create states in the bandgap that would promote the formation of recombination centers, but also shift the optical absorption edge to the visible region. Interestingly, the Pt doping forms a heterojunction, with the valence band maximum consisting of Pt states and the conduction band minimum consisting of LTO states, respectively. To study the facet dependent surface activity, acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) was used as a model molecule to investigate the adsorption and charge transfer on the (101), (100) and (001) Pt-LTO surface facets. The results show that the (101) facet could enable stronger adsorption of CH 3 COOH by promoting more electron transfer during the interfacial interaction. Our theoretical findings aim to promote the design and optimization of the single atom catalysts (SACs) for photocatalytic applications and other broad catalysis systems.

Transforming the electronic properties of phosphorene through charge transfer superatomic doping

Phosphorene is a two-dimensional electron poor p-type semiconductor with great promise for applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Here, in this work, we propose how the two most important properties of a semiconductor, the band gap energy and the nature of carriers, can be controlled by changing the dimensionality or through charge transfer doping with metal-chalcogenide superatoms. Our studies on nanoribbons examine how the band gap can be changed by controlling the width of the ribbons. We investigate the stability and properties of bare and H-terminated nanoribbons. We show that small non-passivated ribbons can be metallic while the passivated ribbons show variation in the band gap energy as a function of the width of the ribbon. We next investigate an alternative approach to band gap and carrier control via doping with ligated metal-chalcogenide superatom clusters whose redox properties can be changed by ligand exchange. Our results obtained from deposition of Co 6 S 8 (PH 3 ) 5-n (CO) n clusters on a phosphorene support showed that the band gap energy can be controlled by exchanging the electron donating phosphine ligands with electron withdrawing CO. We then show that by depositing Re 6 Se 8 (PH 3 ) 5-n Cl n clusters, phosphorene can be converted into a p- or n- type semiconductor as the relative composition of ligands is changed. Our studies provide a novel approach to controlling carrier type and band gap in phosphorene.
