Deformation measurements of composite multi-span beam shear specimens by Moire interferometry

Experimental analyses were performed for determination of in plane deformations and shear strains in unidirectional and quasi-isotropic graphite-epoxy beams. Forty-eight ply beams were subjected to 5 point and 3 point flexure. Whole field measurements were recorded at load levels from about 20% to more than 90% of failure loads. Contour maps of U and W displacement fields were obtained by moire interferometry, using reference gratings of 2400 lines/mm. Clearly defined fringes with fringe orders exceeding 1000 were obtained. Whole field contour maps of shear strains were obtained by a method developed for these tests. Various anomalous effects were detected in the displacement fields. Their analysis indicated excess shear strains in resin rich zones in regions of shear tractions; free edge shear strains in quasi-isotropic specimens in regions of normal stresses; and shear stresses associated with cyclic shear compliances of quasi-isotropic plies in regions of shear tractions. Their contributions could occur independently or in superposition. Qualitative analyses addressed questions of relaxation; influence of contact stress distribution; specimen failure; effect of specimen overhang; nonlinearity; and qualities of 5 and 3 point flexure tests.

High temperature deformation of hot-pressed polycrystalline orthoenstatite

Artificial hot pressed polycrystalline samples were prepared from purified powder of Bamble, Norway, orthoenstatite, (Mg0.86Fe0.14)SiO3. The uniaxial creep behavior of the polycrystalline orthoenstatite was studied over stress ranges of 10-180 MPa and temperatures of 1500-1700 K (0.82-0.93 T sub m) under two different oxygen fugacities, namely equilibrium (Mo-MoO2 buffer) and a reducing (graphite heating element) atmosphere, respectively. An intergranular glassy phase of different compositions with a cavitational creep deformation were observed. In the Mo-MoO2 buffer atmosphere with PO2 approx. 10 to the minus 11 power - 10 to the minus 13 power atmospheres, the results of an analytical electron microscopy analysis indicate that the glassy phases are richer in Ca and Al due to the residual impurities after hot pressing. In the reducing atmosphere with an oxygen fugacity of PO2 approx. 10 to the minus 3 power - 10 to the minus 25 power atmospheres, the results of analytical electron microscopy analysis indicate that the glassy phase is almost pure silica with the presence of free iron precipitate on grain facets and at triple junctions due to the reduction of bulk materials.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

A second toroidal replica grating was found to have an aspect ratio within 10% of the desire value. The aspect ratio of replica toroidal gratings is coming out somewhat low. Whether this is caused by some relaxation in the epoxy or some residual error in the setup when the replication is made from the deformable submaster grating will be determined. The first imaging tests at EUV wavelengths near 500 A were carried out. The initial results are most encouraging with blur sizes of the order of, or less than, 40 microns. Further focussing and additional photographic tests will be carried out, and preparations made for the first photoelectric measurements of the image quality using the (256 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detection system. The visible-light (256 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detector tube has completed initial evaluation.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

Two crucial areas in the development of the high resolution EUV spectroheliometer are the elastically deformable toroidal diffraction grating and the open-structure imaging pulse counting detector system. The optical performance of a high frequency toroidal grating at EUV wavelengths was verified with a 3600 groove/mm master grating on a spherical concave blank. An open-structure (256 x 1024) pixel, multi-anode microchannel array was developed and tested as a pulse counting detector system. These two systems verify the proof of concept of the spectroheliometer design.

Deformation and fracture behavior of Ni-Mo-Al(gamma/gamma prime-alpha) in situ composite

Tensile properties of a directionally solidified (DS) eutectic alloy of the nominal composition Ni-33 Mo-5.7 Al (weight percent) have been investigated both at room temperature and elevated temperatures. The microstructure-mechanical property relationship has been studied for the alloy both in the as-DS and heat-treated conditions. Changes in the yield strength, the work hardening behavior, and the fracture morphology have been explained in terms of the microstructural changes due to the heat treatment. The yield drops observed have been attributed to the microdebonding due to the possible segregation of impurities at the fiber-matrix interface, and partly to the strain aging. The deformation mechanism has been identified to be the cutting of gamma prime particles.

Deformation and erosion of f.c.c. metals and alloys under cavitation attack

Experimental investigations have been conducted to determine the early stages of cavitation attack on 6061-T6 aluminum alloy, electrolytic tough pitch copper, brass, and bronze, all having polycrystalline fcc matrices. The surface profiles and scanning electron micrographs show that the pits are initially formed at the grain boundaries, while the grain surfaces are progressively roughened by multiple slip and twinning. The initial erosion is noted to have occurred from the material in the grain boundaries, as well as by fragmentation of part of the grains. Further erosion occurred by shearing and necking of the surface undulations caused by plastic deformation. The mean penetration depth, computed on the basis of mass loss, was lowest on the bronze and greatest on the copper. Attention is given to the relation of cavitation attack to grain size, glide stress and stacking fault energy.

Hybrid stress finite elements for large deformations of inelastic solids

A new hybrid stress finite element algorithm, based on a generalization of Fraeijs de Veubeke's complementary energy principle is presented. Analyses of large quasistatic deformation of inelastic solids (hypoelastic, plastic, viscoplastic) are within its capability. Principle variables in the formulation are the nominal stress rate and spin. A brief account is given of the boundary value problem in these variables, and the 'equivalent' variational principle. The finite element equation, along with initial positions and stresses, comprise an initial value problem. Factors affecting the choice of time integration schemes are discussed. Results found by application of the new algorithm are compared to those obtained by a velocity based finite element algorithm.

Computation of eigenpairs of Ax = lambda Bx for vibrations of spinning deformable bodies

It is shown that, when linear theory is used, the general eigenvalue problem related with the free vibrations of spinning deformable bodies is of the type AX = lambda Bx, where A is Hermitian, and B is real positive definite. Since the order n of the matrices may be large, and A and B are banded or block banded, due to the economics of the numerical solution, one is interested in obtaining only those eigenvalues which fall within the frequency band of interest of the problem. The paper extends the well known method of bisections and iteration of R to the n power to n dimensional complex spaces, i.e., to C to the n power, so that it can be applied to the present problem.

Generalized wake geometry for a helicopter in forward flight and effect of wake deformation on airloads

An analytical investigation was conducted to develop a first level generalization of the predicted distorted wake geometry of a helicopter rotor in level steady forward flight and to demonstrate the influence of wake deformation on the prediction of rotor airloads. Distortions of the tip vortex relative to the classical undistorted geometry are generalized in terms of vortex age, blade azimuth, advance ratio, thrust coefficient, and number of blades for a representative rotor. A computer module and charts were developed for approximating wake geometry and identifying wake boundaries and locations of blade-vortex passage. Predicted H-34 airloads for several inflow/wake models are compared with data for selected flight conditions. The occurrence of close blade-vortex passages and the high sensitivity of predicted airloads to small deviations of blade to tip vortex distance demonstrate the requirement for improved blade-vortex interaction models. The airload correlations indicate that refined distorted wake methodology has the potential to provide more accurate airload prediction.

A higher-order shear deformation theory of laminated elastic shells

A higher-order shear deformation theory of elastic shells is developed for shells laminated of orthotropic layers. The theory is a modification of the Sanders' theory and accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through thickness of the shell and tangential stress-free boundary conditions on the boundary surfaces of the shell. The Navier-type exact solutions for bending and natural vibration are presented for cylindrical and spherical shells under simply supported boundary conditions.

The effect of carbon concentration and plastic deformation on ultrasonic higher order elastic properties of steel

The behavior of higher order elastic properties, which are much more sensitive to material state than are second order properties, has been studied for steel alloys AISI 1016, 1045, 1095, and 8620 by measuring the stress derivative of the acoustic natural velocity to determine the stress acoustic constants (SAC's). Results of these tests show a 20 percent linear variation of SAC's with carbon content as well as even larger variations with prestrain (plastic deformation). The use of higher order elastic characterization permits quantitative evaluation of solids and may prove useful in studies of fatigue and fracture.

Optimal measurement of ice-sheet deformation from surface-marker arrays

Surface strain rate is best observed by fitting a strain-rate ellipsoid to the measured movement of a stake network or other collection of surface features, using a least squares procedure. Error of the resulting fit varies as 1/(L delta t square root of N), where L is the stake separation, delta is the time period between initial and final stake survey, and n is the number of stakes in the network. This relation suggests that if n is sufficiently high, the traditional practice of revisiting stake-network sites on successive field seasons may be replaced by a less costly single year operation. A demonstration using Ross Ice Shelf data shows that reasonably accurate measurements are obtained from 12 stakes after only 4 days of deformation. It is possible for the least squares procedure to aid airborne photogrammetric surveys because reducing the time interval between survey and re-survey permits better surface feature recognition.

A study of tectonic activity in the Basin-Range Province and on the San Andreas Fault. No. 2: Lithospheric structure, seismicity, and contemporary deformation of the United States Cordillera

The structural evolution of the U.S. Cordillera has been influenced by a variety of tectonic mechanisms including passive margin rifting and sedimentation; arc volcanism; accretion of exotic terranes; intraplate magmatism; and folding and faulting associated with compression and extension processes that have profoundly influenced the lithospheric structure. As a result the Cordilleran crust is laterally inhomogeneous across its 2000 km east-west breadth. It is thin along the West Coast where it has close oceanic affinities. The crust thickens eastward beneath the Sierra Nevada, then thins beneath the Basin-Range. Crustal thickening continues eastward beneath the Colorado Plateau, the Rocky Mountains, and the Great Plains. The total lithospheric thickness attains 65 km in the Basin-Range and increases eastward beneath the Colorado Plateau. The upper-crust, including the crystalline basement of the Cordillera, has P sub G velocities of 6 km/s in the Basin-Range and Rio Grande Rift. Lower P sub G velocities of 5.4 to 5.7 km/s are associated with the youthful Yellowstone, Valles and Long Valley calderas and the Franciscan assemblage of the western coastal margin. Averaged crustal velocity reflects integrated tectonic evolution of the crust-thick silicic bodies, velocity reversals, and a thin crust produce low averaged velocities that are characteristic of a highly attenuated and thermally deformed crust.

Method of determining the thermal deformations of astronomical mirrors

Procedures are given for calculating thermal fields and associated thermal deformations in astronomical mirrors. A technique is described for thermal strain simulation when complex thermal fields develop in astronomical mirrors. Thermal strains in pyroceramic, quartz and pyrex mirrors can be effectively determined at temperatures ranging from -70 to 150 C by this technique.

The mechanics of solids in the plastically-deformable state

The mechanics of continua, which is based on the general stress model of Cauchy, up to the present has almost exclusively been applied to liquid and solid elastic bodies. Saint-Venant has developed a theory for the plastic or remaining form changes of solids, but it does not give the required number of equations for determining motion. A complete set of equations of motion for plastic deformable bodies is derived. This is done within the framework of Cauch mechanics. And it is supported by certain experimental facts which characterize the range of applications.

Deformation of the heliospheric current sheet

A kinematic analysis of the previously neglected effect of velocity inhomogeneity on the topology of the heliospheric current sheet in a radially flowing solar wind shows how the originally smooth current sheet becomes 'ruffled'. In the highly idealized case of a totally uniform, radial, steady solar wind, the shape of the current sheet is independent of distance from the sun. However, the real solar wind is inhomogeneous; the velocity varies from point to point along the current sheet, causing a distortion in the current sheet of progressively greater amplitude with increasing distance from the sun. This is true even for purely radial flow. Significant and observable distortion is produced by relatively small gradients in velocity; thus to predict or understand the shape of the heliospheric current sheet it is essential to know the solar wind in which the current sheet is embedded. Examples are given of mild velocity gradients which demonstrate the principles, the magnitude, and the character of the effect; deformation of the actual heliospheric current sheet in the highly variable solar wind is expected to be of far greater amplitude and complexity than in the simplified, tutorial examples. A new expression for the inclination of the current sheet as a function of velocity inhomogeneity and distance from the sun that is easily applied to the interpretation of solar wind data is also derived.

Geodynamical basis for crustal deformation under the Tibetan Plateau

Plate tectonics and satellite-derived gravity data are used to examine crustal deformation under the Tibetan Plateau. A spherical harmonic analysis is given for the global plate boundary system, and the crustal stresses in Tibet are calculated from satellite gravity data. A superimposed stress system is constructed. The stress patterns reveal that the cold downwelling mantle convection flow beneath southern Tibet pulls the Indian plate down but applies a bending moment on the end of the plate to uplift and support the mass of the Himalayas.

Surface deformation associated with the November 23, 1977, Caucete, Argentina, earthquake sequence

The 1977 Caucete (San Juan) earthquake considered in the present paper occurred near the Sierra Pie de Palo in the Sierras Pampeanas tectonic province of western Argentina. In the study reported, coseismic surface deformation is combined with seismic observations (main shock and aftershocks, both teleseismic and local data) to place constraints on the geometry and slip of the main fault responsible for the 1977 earthquake. The implications of the 1977 event for long-term crustal shortening and earthquake recurrence rates in this region are also discussed. It is concluded that the 1977 Caucete earthquake was accompanied by more than 1 m of vertical uplift.
