Searches for 25 rare and forbidden decays of D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ mesons

A search is performed for rare and forbidden charm decays of the form ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {h}^{\pm }{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{\left(\prime \right)\mp } $, where h ± is a pion or kaon and ℓ (')± is an electron or muon. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb –1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and 90 % confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between 1.4 × 10 –8 and 6.4 × 10 –6 . In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude.

Search for the lepton-flavour violating decays B0 → K *0 μ ± e ∓ and ${B}_s^0$ → Φμ ± e ∓

A search for the lepton-flavour violating decays B 0 → K *0 μ ± e ∓ and \( {B}_s^0 \) → Φμ ± e ∓ is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb - 1 . No significant signals are observed and upper limits of $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{+}{e}^{-}\right)<5.7\times {10}^{-9}\left(6.9\times {10}^{-9}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{-}{e}^{+}\right)<6.8\times {10}^{-9}\left(7.9\times {10}^{-9}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{\pm }{e}^{\mp}\right)<10.1\times {10}^{-9}\left(11.7\times {10}^{-9}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to \phi {\mu}^{\pm }{e}^{\mp}\right)<16.0\times {10}^{-9}\left(19.8\times {10}^{-9}\right)\end{array}} $$ are set at 90% (95%) confidence level. These results constitute the world’s most stringent limits to date, with the limit on the decay \( {B}_s^0 \) → Φμ ± e ∓ the first being set. In addition, limits are reported for scalar and left-handed lepton-flavour violating New Physics scenarios.

Sensitivity of a tonne-scale NEXT detector for neutrinoless double-beta decay searches

The Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC (NEXT) searches for the neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay of 136 Xe using high-pressure xenon gas TPCs with electroluminescent amplification. A scaled-up version of this technology with about 1 tonne of enriched xenon could reach in less than 5 years of operation a sensitivity to the half-life of 0νββ decay better than 10 27 years, improving the current limits by at least one order of magnitude. This prediction is based on a well-understood background model dominated by radiogenic sources. The detector concept presented here represents a first step on a compelling path towards sensitivity to the parameter space defined by the inverted ordering of neutrino masses, and beyond.

Angular analysis of the rare decay $B_s^0$ → $\phi μ^+μ^-$

An angular analysis of the rare decay B$^0_s$ → $\phi μ^+μ^-$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb -1 . The observables describing the angular distributions of the decay B$^0_s$ → $\phi μ^+μ^-$ are determined in regions of q 2 , the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

Radiative Corrections to Neutron Beta Decay and (Anti)Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering from Low-Energy Effective Field Theory

Herein we study radiative corrections to neutron beta decay and low-energy (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering within a top-down effective field theory approach. As it was recently shown, a few electromagnetic and electroweak low-energy coupling constants in heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory are yet to be determined. Performing matching to the four-fermion effective field theory, we relate these low-energy constants to correlation functions of vector and axial-vector currents. Such relations allow us to explicitly clarify scheme dependence for radiative corrections to neutron decay and low-energy charged-current (anti)neutrino scattering, provide a robust prediction of leading in the electromagnetic coupling constant contributions, and achieve a clear separation between short-distance and long-distance contributions.

Study of Pile-Up Effects in Decay Energy Spectroscopy

Pile-up is an unavoidable complication for cryogenic detectors with relatively large heat capacities and slow rise time, such as systems for decay energy spectroscopy employing large Au absorbers. We have simulated the spectral response of such slow cryogenic detectors using Monte-Carlo algorithms to investigate the effects of pile-up on absolute and relative activity measurements. We focus on the impact of non-distinguishable pile-up that occurs when the rising edges of two waveforms originating from different events overlap in time and are interpreted as a single event. This effect can not be readily identified and corrected in experimental data. We investigated two representative cases of absolute decay counting and plutonium isotopic analysis and find that pile-up can distort the reconstruction of both the absolute and relative activities. This Monte-Carlo methodology quantifies of pile-up effects and provides a systematic methodology for calculating corrective factors.

CUPID: The Next-Generation Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment

We report CUPID is a next-generation tonne-scale bolometric neutrinoless double beta decay experiment that will probe the Majorana nature of neutrinos and discover lepton number violation in case of observation of this singular process. CUPID will be built on experience, expertise and lessons learned in CUORE and will be installed in the current CUORE infra-structure in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. The CUPID detector technology, successfully tested in the CUPID-Mo experiment, is based on scintillating bolometers of Li 2 MoO 4 enriched in the isotope of interest 100 Mo. In order to achieve its ambitious science goals, the CUPID collaboration aims to reduce the backgrounds in the region of interest by a factor 100 with respect to CUORE. This performance will be achieved by introducing the high efficient α/β discrimination demonstrated by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo experiments, and using a high transition energy double beta decay nucleus such as 100 Mo to minimize the impact of the gamma background. CUPID will consist of about 1500 hybrid heat-light detectors for a total isotope mass of 250 kg. The CUPID scientific reach is supported by a detailed and safe background model based on CUORE, CUPID-Mo and CUPID-0 results. The required performances have already been demonstrated and will be presented.

A mass conservative, well balanced, tangency preserving and energy decaying method for the shallow water equations on a sphere

Here a fully discrete surface finite element method is proposed for solving the viscous shallow water equations in a bounded Lipschitz domain on the sphere based on a general triangular mesh. The method consists of a modified Crank–Nicolson method in time and a Galerkin surface finite element method in space for the fluid thickness H and the fluid velocity u. A finite element space tangential to the sphere at all finite element nodes is proposed to approximate the fluid velocity u. The proposed method has second-order accuracy in time and first-order accuracy in space, and preserves mass conservation, well balancedness, tangency of velocity to the sphere, and energy decay. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method and the preservation of the physical properties, including mass conservation, well balancedness, and energy decay. A numerical simulation of ocean mesoscale activity on a circular basin with a continental shelf is provided.

CUORE: The first bolometric experiment at the ton scale for the search for neutrino-less double beta decay

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most massive bolometric experiment searching for neutrino-less double beta (0νββ) decay. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals (742 kg) arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Here, this paper will describe the CUORE experiment, including the cryostat, and present the detector performance during the first year of running. Additional detail will describe the effort made in improving the energy resolution in the 130 Te 0νββ decay region of interest (ROI) and the suppression of backgrounds. A description of work to lower the energy threshold in order to give CUORE the sensitivity to search for other rare events, such as dark matter, will also be provided.

A methodology for decay heat characterization in molten salt reactors

Accurate decay heat prediction in molten salt reactors (MSRs) faces dual challenges: complex operational uncertainties and the need for interpretable models compatible with engineering workflows. This work presents a hybrid machine learning and segmented polynomial methodology that addresses both requirements through three key innovations. First, a modular data architecture encodes MSR-specific operational parameters (power density: 1-100 W cm -3 , humidity: 0-0.1 wt %, air ingress: 0-0.1 mol %) with uncertainty-aware temporal discretization spanning 15 orders of magnitude. Second, region-optimized machine learning models achieve 92.3 % root mean square error (RMSE) reduction over conventional polynomials while maintaining physical interpretability through automated piecewise equation generation. Third, dual front-end interfaces accelerate safety analyses — a Jupyter environment enables researchers to explore 10,000+ parameter combinations via interactive widgets, while a Streamlit web application reduces design iteration cycles through production-grade visualization tools. Operational deployment demonstrates prediction times of only a couple hundred milliseconds for 10 4 years decay profiles, enabling real-time optimization of spent fuel container designs.

Excited states in semi-magic 82 Ge populated in the βn-decay of 83 Ga

For this work, the βn and β-decay of the neutron-rich 83 Ga isotopes produced in proton-induced fission of 238 U were studied at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using on-line mass separation and the hybrid-3Hen neutron-γ detector array. Excited states in semi-magic 82 Ge populated in βn decay of 83 Ga were identified using neutron-γ coincidences. The measured relative population of excited states in 82 Ge is compared with a βn emission model, where the neutron emission model combines the strength distribution obtained from the shell-model calculations with the statistical Hauser-Feshbach model.

First observation of the decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 183 Hg and B(M 2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart

The decay of the 13/2 + isomeric state in 183 Hg was observed for the first time following the a decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 187 Pb produced in the 142 Nd( 50 Cr, 2p3n) reaction. Using $\alpha - \gamma$ delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30) μs. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy M2 transition to the known 9/2 - member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2 - [514] band, followed by a 105-keV M1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B(M2) >= 0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2 + isomer in 181 Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B(M2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

Elliptic flow of heavy-flavor decay electrons in Au+Au collisions at s NN = 27 and 54.4 GeV at RHIC

We report on new measurements of elliptic flow (v 2 ) of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.8) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 27 and 54.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. Heavy-flavor decay electrons (eHF) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV exhibit a non-zero v 2 in the transverse momentum (p T ) region of p T < 2 GeV/c with the magnitude comparable to that at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$=200 GeV. The measured e HF v 2 at 54.4 GeV is also consistent with the expectation of their parent charm hadron v 2 following number-of-constituent-quark scaling as other light and strange flavor hadrons at this energy. These suggest that charm quarks gain significant collectivity through the evolution of the QCD medium and may reach local thermal equilibrium in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$=54.4 GeV. The measured e HF v 2 in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 27 GeV is consistent with zero within large uncertainties. The energy dependence of v 2 for different flavor particles (π,Φ,D 0 /e HF ) shows an indication of quark mass hierarchy in reaching thermalization in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Search for the Higgs boson decays to a ρ 0 , ϕ, or K ⁎0 meson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

Three rare decay processes of the Higgs boson to a ρ(770) 0 , Φ(1020), or K ⁎ (892) 0 meson and a photon are searched for using $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Events are selected assuming the mesons decay into a pair of charged pions, a pair of charged kaons, or a charged kaon and pion, respectively. Depending on the Higgs boson production mode, different triggering and reconstruction techniques are adopted. The analyzed data sets correspond to integrated luminosities up to 138 fb -1 , depending on the reconstructed final state. After combining various data sets and categories, no significant excess above the background expectations is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson branching fractions into ρ(770) 0 $γ$, Φ(1020)$γ$, and K ⁎ (892) 0 are determined to be 3.7 x 10 -4 , 3.0 x 10 -4 , and 3.0 x 10 -4 , respectively. In case of the ρ(770) 0 $γ$ and Φ(1020)$γ$ channels, these are the most stringent experimental limits to date.

Angular analysis of the B 0 → K ⁎ (892) 0 μ + μ − decay in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A full set of optimized observables is measured in an angular analysis of the decay B 0 → K* (892) 0 μ + μ – using a sample of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140fb –1 . The analysis is performed in six bins of the squared invariant mass of the dimuon system, q 2 , over the range 1.1 < q 2 < 16 GeV 2 . The results are among the most precise experimental measurements of the angular observables for this decay and are compared to a variety of predictions based on the standard model. Some of these predictions exhibit tension with the measurements.

Vibrational Spin-Orbit Coupling Contributions to Excited State Decay of Ligand-to-Ligand Charge Transfer States

Controlling excited state relaxation processes is important in a variety of photochemical and photophysical processes, including the generation of ground and excited state spin polarization for quantum information science applications. Here, we address how specific static distortions – based on vibrational spin-orbit active modes at C2v symmetry determined by group theory – in a series of low-symmetry ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complexes enable direct spin-orbit coupling contributions to T1 → S0 excited state decay. These results are used to address spin-vibronic coupling contributions to T1 → S0 decay in a high-symmetry (tBu2bpy)Pt(S,S) (tBu2bpy = 4,4’-di-tert-butyl-2,2’-bipyridine and S,S = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complex with effective C2v symmetry, where T1 relaxation is both spin- and orbitally forbidden due to the direct spin-orbit coupling matrix element being zero by symmetry. Low-frequency vibrations that involve a pyridine-pyridine twisting motion within the bpy ligand generate large ∂/∂Qi values that will contribute significantly to T1 → S0 relaxation. The work advances ligand design strategies for the generation of tailored T1 → S0 relaxation rates, which can be utilized to optimize the generation of electron spin polarization in radical-elaborated ligand-to-ligand charge transfer complexes.
