Spectral signatures of transverse optical modes in semiconductor nanowires

In order to build nanophotonic devices, it is important to understand and ultimately control the optical mode structure within potential components such as nanoscale waveguides. However, experimental characterization of such modes in the optical regime is difficult due to the nanoscale dimensions of such components and the perturbations that would be induced by a near-field probe. Here, we demonstrate a probe-free, far-field method to characterize the optical modes within GaN nanowires (NWs) based on a novel off-axis scanning confocal microscope system. Using this microscope, we observe spectral signatures resulting from lateral leakage of waveguide modes when they exceed their respective cutoff limits. We identify these modes within hyperspectral images using an analytical model coupled with finite element simulations. The model can also be used to predict the spectral signatures for given geometrical and dielectric parameters, which enabled us to deduce the transverse dimension of the NW from hyperspectral images with an accuracy of ∼ <#comment/> 30 nm .

High Efficiency, Low Cost RF Sources for Accelerators and Colliders

Calabazas Creek Research, Inc. (CCR) and its collaborators are developing high efficiency, low cost RF sources. Phase and Amplitude Controlled Magnetrons: CCR, Fermilab, and Communications & Power Industries, LLC (CPI) recently developed a 100 kW, 1.3 GHz magnetron system with amplitude and phase control. The system operated at more than 80% efficiency and demonstrated rapid control of amplitude and phase. Multiple Beam Triodes: CCR, in collaboration with CPI and JP Accelerator Works, Inc., is developing 200 kW, pulsed and CW RF sources from 350 to 700 MHz with projected efficiencies exceeding 80% and cost of $0.50/Watt. Prototype tubes are scheduled for tests in spring 2021. High Efficiency Klystrons:CCR, CPI, and Leidos, Inc. are building a 1.3 GHz, 100 kW klystron operating at 80% efficiency. High power testing is scheduled for summer 2021. Multiple Beam IOTs: CCR and Georgia Tech Research Institute are developing MBIOTs with simplified input coupling and high efficiency. Simulations indicate that 3rd harmonic drive power can increase the efficiency 8-10 %. The program is developing a prototype tube to produce 200 kW peak, 100 kW average power at 704 MHz.

Utah State University's contribution to Enhancing Understanding of High Energy Density Plasmas from Wire Array and Solid Liner Implosions Using Fluid Modeling with Kinetic Closures (Final Report)

This final report pertains to work performed at Utah State University (USU) on the subject of kinetic closures for fluid simulations of high-energy-density (HED) plasmas. This report was written following the end date of the three year grant that started August 1, 2016, and ended July 31, 2019. The key aspect of the work at USU was to develop and implement kinetic closures for fluid simulations of more strongly coupled plasmas. Funds for this project provided some summer salary for the PI at USU, Dr. Eric Held, but mainly provided a robust stipend for his graduate student, David Hansen, who has worked on the project since the start date. Mr. Hansen is nearing completion of his PhD thesis which he will defend either in December of 2019 or the spring of 2020. With this award Dr. Eric Held and his PhD student David Hansen developed a computer code called {\bf X-section} that can be used to generate collisional scattering cross sections which summarize particle interactions in high-energy-density plasmas.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual - Version 4.56

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Roadmap for thermal property measurements of Molten Salt Reactor systems

Thermal properties of molten salts, both with and without fissile and fertile material, are fundamental to modeling and simulation that supports design, construction, operation, and accident progression evaluation of molten salt reactors. This roadmap provides guidance to the research community on the types and amounts of required data for base, or carrier, salt systems, recommends simulated burnup fuel salt compositions to evaluate, and provides a technical foundation for a focused salt property evaluation matrix. The property values generated from both computation and experimental methods are used to develop models that constitute the Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database (MSTDB). While the building blocks of MSTDB are fundamental in nature, its data facilitates constructing engineering models that allow stakeholders to investigate the behavior of specific compositions of interest and supports broader modeling and simulation of MSRs through coupling to multi-physics, multi-scale mass accountancy tools.
