Studying f-Electron Contributions in Thorium and Uranium Containing Molecules

The pure rotational spectra of several actinide-containing compounds have been improved upon and, in two cases, been recorded for the first time. The diatomic molecules HfS and ThS have been studied in their ground electronic states but high vibrationally excited states. The results have yielded very accurate locations of the minima of the potential energy curves. The asymmetric molecules OThS and UO2S have been prepared by laser ablation synthesis and their pure rotational spectra recorded for the first time. Precise information pertinent to the geometric and electronic structure of these molecules has been obtained and is compared with other, newly recorded and related species such as OCeS.

Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration

This report presents the research, design, and implementation of a Toroid Signal Processing Container with Redis Integration, conducted during my internship assignment. The project focused on developing a modular signal processing sys- tem capable of performing baseline correction, droop compensation, and real- time data communication for beam diagnostic signals. Using Redis as a message broker and configuration manager, the system ensures modularity, scalability, and efficient inter-process communication. Signal correction algorithms, such as Asymmetric Least Squares (ALS) baseline smoothing and a numerical droop correction approach, were implemented and tested using Linac beam data. The results confirm that this system improves signal fidelity and supports real-time analysis requirements, offering valuable contributions to the field of beam instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

Development of Magnesium Borane Containing Solutions of Furans and Pyrroles as Reversible Liquid Hydrogen Carriers (Final Technical Report)

The objective of this project was the development of a two-way liquid hydrogen carrier having a greater energy efficiency and lower delivery costs than either existing hydrogen carriers or conventional compressed H 2 gas transport technology. It was hypothesized that a hydrogen carrier consisting of solutions of furans and pyrroles containing Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer complex catalyst, would have more than twice the volumetric available hydrogen density of the conventional two-way liquid hydrogen carrier, methylcyclohexane. Most notably the envisioned liquid hydrogen carrier would: 1) maintain high product selectivity through multiple cycles of dehydrogenation and hydrogenation; and 2) undergo rapid dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation. The project was specifically aimed at the demonstration of at least one LOHC solution of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 and pincer catalyst that releases ≥ 50 g H 2 /L at ≤ 200 °C upon dehydrogenation and undergoes ≥ 25% rehydrogenation under 100 atm of H 2 at ≤ 200 °C.

Laser Spectroscopy of Exotic Atoms and Molecules Containing Octupole-Deformed Nuclei

This project investigated the nuclear, atomic, and molecular structure of exotic atoms and molecules containing actinide isotopes. These short-lived radioactive systems are challenging to produce and study in the laboratory, yet they offer unique opportunities for fundamental science. These nuclei are predicted to exhibit pear-shaped (octupole) deformation, a rare collective nuclear behavior that dramatically enhances their sensitivity to fundamental physics phenomena such as time-reversal- and parity-violating effects. Such enhancements make them ideal probes for exploring open questions in our understanding of the universe such as the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry of the universe. To realize these measurements, the project led the development of a new laser spectroscopy experiment at MIT, and later commissioned at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University: the Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy Experiment (RISE). RISE combines the spectroscopic precision of collinear laser spectroscopy with the sensitivity of particle-detection techniques, enabling measurements of rare isotopes produced at rates as low as a few ions per second. The beamline was designed, built, and installed, and was successfully commissioned at FRIB during the grant period. RISE is now a permanent capability of the FRIB facility, and has produced several results on the study of rare atoms and molecules for nuclear structure and fundamental symmetries. In parallel with the FRIB program, the project contributed to the first precision laser-spectroscopy measurements of short-lived radioactive molecules. Working with international collaborators at CERN's ISOLDE facility, the team conducted pioneering experiments on radium monofluoride (RaF) and actinium monofluoride (AcF). The results from this work have been published in major journals of science, including Nature, Science, Nature Physics, Nature Communications, and Physical Review Letters. These findings have guided future experiments on the laser cooling of radioactive molecules, opening a new platform for precision tests of fundamental symmetries.

Supplemental defatted microalgae affects egg and tissue fatty acid composition differently in laying hens fed diets containing corn and flaxseed oil

Effects of defatted microalgae (DFA) on fatty acid composition of eggs and tissues of hens have not been well studied. This experiment was to determine how low concentrations of supplemental DFA in the presence or absence of flaxseed oil (FO) altered fatty acid profiles of egg yolk, liver, adipose tissue, and plasma of layers. A total of 60 Shaver Leghorn layer hens (individually caged, 20-wk old) were allotted into 6 groups (n = 10) and fed a corn/soybean meal basal diet containing 0, 3, or 5% DFA and 0 (1.5% corn oil, CO) or 1.5% FO for 6 wk. BW, ADFI, egg production rate, and egg component weights were not affected by any of the dietary treatments at various time points, but egg yolk color was changed (P < 0.05) with increasing concentrations of DFA. The concentration of n-3 fatty acids in egg yolk and plasma were elevated by FO up to 9-fold (P < 0.05) starting at wk 1 or 2, and 39 to 83% (P < 0.05) by DFA. Supplemental DFA improved (P < 0.05) n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratios in egg yolk and plasma from 13 to 23 and 7 to 13, respectively, only in hens fed diets without FO. Fatty acid profiles of liver and adipose tissue (at wk 6) displayed responses to supplemental DFA and FO similar to those of egg yolk or plasma. In conclusion, supplemental 3 or 5% DFA caused moderate enrichments of n-3 fatty acids and decreased the n6/n3 fatty acid ratios of egg yolk and tissues in hens fed diets without FO.

A Foundational Study for Normal F8 -Containing Mouse Models for the miRNA Regulation of Hemophilia A: Identification and Analysis of Mouse miRNAs that Downregulate the Murine F8 Gene

Hemophilia A (HA) is associated with defects in the F8 gene, encoding coagulation factor VIII (FVIII). Our previous studies show that F8-targeting micro RNAs (miRNAs), a group of small RNAs involved in gene regulation, can downregulate F8 expression causing HA in individuals with normal F8-genotypes and increased HA severity in patients with mutations in F8. Understanding the mechanistic underpinnings of human genetic diseases caused or modulated by miRNAs require a small animal model, such as a mouse model. Here, we report a foundational study to develop such a model system. We identified the mouse 3'untranslated region (3'UTR) on murine F8-mRNA (muF8-mRNA) that can bind to murine miRNAs. We then selected three miRNAs for evaluation: miR-208a, miR-351 and miR-125a. We first demonstrate that these three miRNAs directly target the 3'UTR of muF8-mRNA and reduce the expression of a reporter gene (luciferase) mRNA fused to the muF8-3' UTR in mammalian cells. Furthermore, in mouse cells that endogenously express the F8 gene and produce FVIII protein, the ectopic expression of these miRNAs downregulated F8-mRNA and FVIII protein. These results provide proof-of-concept and reagents as a foundation for using a normal F8-containing mouse as a model for the miRNA regulation of normal F8 in causing or aggravating the genetic disease HA.

Amine-Containing Membranes with Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for CO2/H2 Separation

Amine-containing mixed-matrix membranes incorporated with amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (AF-MWNTs) were synthesized for CO2/H2 separation based on the facilitated transport mechanism. AF-MWNTs were chosen primarily as the mechanical reinforcing filler to enhance the membrane stability. At 107 °C and 0.2-MPa feed pressure, the membrane incorporated with 10 wt.% AF-MWNTs showed a CO2 permeability of 3196 Barrers and a CO2/H2 selectivity of 205. At the higher feed pressure of 1.5 MPa, owing to the carrier saturation phenomenon, the same membrane exhibited reduced transport performance with a CO2 permeability of 776 Barrers and a CO2/H2 selectivity of 31. These separation performances at both the low and high feed pressures were well above the theoretical upper bound. Furthermore, the incorporation of 10 wt.% AF-MWNTs led to a significant improvement on membrane stability. The transport performance and selective layer thickness of this membrane maintained for 100 h, which suggested that the incorporation of AF-MWNTs improved the resistance to membrane compaction upon a high feed pressure. Therefore, this work is considered as one of the crucial steps to enable the application of facilitated transport membranes to high-pressure gas processing such as syngas purification.

The Elastic Properties of β-Mg 2 SiO 4 Containing 0.73 wt.% of H 2 O to 10 GPa and 600 K by Ultrasonic Interferometry with Synchrotron X-Radiation

Here, we measured the elastic velocities of a synthetic polycrystalline β-Mg 2 SiO 4 containing 0.73 wt.% H 2 O to 10 GPa and 600 K using ultrasonic interferometry combined with synchrotron X-radiation. Third-order Eulerian finite strain analysis of the high P and T data set yielded K so = 161.5(2) GPa, G o = 101.6(1) GPa, and (∂K s /∂P) T = 4.84(4), (∂G/∂P) T = 1.68(2) indistinguishable from K so = 161.1(3) GPa, G o = 101.4(1) GPa, and (∂K s /∂P) T = 4.93(4), (∂G/∂P) T = 1.73(2) from the linear fit. The hydration of the wadsleyite by 0.73 wt.% decreases K s and G moduli by 5.3% and 8.6%, respectively, but no measurable effect was noted for (∂K s /∂P) T and (∂G/∂P) T . The temperature derivatives of the K s and G moduli from the finite strain analysis (∂K S /∂T) P = –0.013(2) GPaK –1 , (∂G/∂T) P = –0.015(0.4) GPaK –1 , and the linear fit (∂K S /∂T) P = –0.015(1) GPaK –1 , (∂G/∂T) P = –0.016(1) GPaK –1 are in agreement, and both data sets indicating the |(∂G/∂T) P | to be greater than |(∂K S /∂T) P |. Calculations yield ΔV p(α-β) = 9.88% and ΔV S(α-β) = 8.70% for the hydrous β-Mg 2 SiO 4 and hydrous α-Mg 2 SiO 4 , implying 46–52% olivine volume content in the Earth’s mantle to satisfy the seismic velocity contrast ΔV s = ΔV P = 4.6% at the 410 km depth.

Crystal Structure of an Anisotropic Pyrope Garnet That Contains Two Cubic Phases

The crystal structure of two different samples of pyrope garnet, ideally Mg 3 Al 2 Si 3 O 12 , from South Africa was refined using the Rietveld method, space group Ia3¯d, and monochromatic synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HRPXRD) data. Sample 1 from Wesselton Mine is a single cubic phase and is optically isotropic. Electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) provided an average composition {Mg 2.30 Fe 2+ 0.26 Ca 0.42 Mn 2+ 0.02 } Σ3 [Al 1.53 Fe 3+ 0.06 Cr 3+ 0.40 Ti 4+ 0.01 Fe 2+ 0.01 ] Σ2 Si 3 O 12 , which contains a significant amount of Cr cations. The unit-cell parameter (Å) and bond distances (Å) are a = 11.56197(1) Å, average = 2.2985, Al-O = 1.9101(4), and Si-O = 1.6343(3) Å. Sample 2 from De Beers Diamond Mine has an average composition {Mg 2.33 Fe 2+ 0.33 Ca 0.33 Mn 2+ 0.01 } Σ3 [Al 1.73 Fe 3+ 0.12 Cr 3+ 0.06 Ti 4+ 0.05 Fe 2+ 0.05 ] Σ2 Si 3 O 12 and is a fine-scale intergrowth of two cubic phases. The weight percentage, unit-cell parameter (Å), and bond distances (Å) for phase 2a are 62.2(1)%, a = 11.56185(1) Å, average = 2.3006, Al-O = 1.9080(4), Si-O = 1.6334(4) Å. The corresponding values for phase 2b are 37.8(1)%, a = 11.53896(1) Å, average = 2.2954, Al-O = 1.9020(6), Si-O = 1.6334(6) Å. The two cubic phases in sample 2 cause the crystal to be optically anisotropic because of strain induce birefringence. The unit-cell parameter and bond distances for sample 1 are similar to those in phase 2a.

Simultaneous Electrospinning and Electrospraying for the Preparation of a Precursor Membrane Containing Hydrothermally Generated Biochar Particles to Produce the Value-Added Product of Carbon Nanofibrous Felt

Biochar is a byproduct generated from the hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass, such as corn stover, in an anaerobic environment. This work aims to convert biochar into a value-added product of carbon nanofibrous felt. First, the biochar-containing precursor membrane was prepared from simultaneous electrospinning and electrospraying. After thermal stabilization in air and carbonization in argon, the obtained precursor membrane was converted into a mechanically flexible and robust carbon nanofibrous felt. Electrochemical results revealed that the biochar-derived carbon nanofibrous felt might be a good candidate as a supercapacitor electrode with a good rate capability and high kinetic performance.

Design and Gas Separation Performance of Imidazolium Poly(ILs) Containing Multivalent Imidazolium Fillers and Crosslinking Agents

This work introduces a series of vinyl-imidazolium-based polyelectrolyte composites, which were structurally modified via impregnation with multivalent imidazolium-benzene ionic liquids (ILs) or crosslinked with novel cationic crosslinkers which possess internal imidazolium cations and vinylimidazolium cations at the periphery. A set of eight [C4vim][Tf2N]-based membranes were prepared via UV-initiated free radical polymerization, including four composites containing di-, tri-, tetra-, and hexa-imidazolium benzene ILs and four crosslinked derivatives which utilized tri- and tetra- vinylimidazolium benzene crosslinking agents. Structural and functional characterizations were performed, and pure gas permeation data were collected to better understand the effects of “free” ILs dispersed in the polymeric matrix versus integrated ionic crosslinks on the transport behaviors of these thin films. These imidazolium PIL:IL composites exhibited moderately high CO2 permeabilities (~20–40 Barrer), a 4–7× increase relative to corresponding neat PIL, with excellent selectivities against N2 or CH4. The addition of imidazolium-benzene fillers with increased imidazolium content were shown to correspondingly enhance CO2 solubility (di- < tri- < tetra- < hexa-), with the [C4vim][Tf2N]: [Hexa(Im+)Benz ][Tf2N] composite showing the highest CO2 permeability (PCO2 = 38.4 Barrer), while maintaining modest selectivities (αCO2/CH4 = 20.2, αCO2/N2 = 23.6). Additionally, these metrics were similarly improved with the integration of more ionic content bonded to the polymeric matrix; increased PCO2 with increased wt% of the tri- and tetra-vinylimidazolium benzene crosslinking agent was observed. This study demonstrates the intriguing interactions and effects of ionic additives or crosslinkers within a PIL matrix, revealing the potential for the tuning of the properties and transport behaviors of ionic polymers using ionic liquid-inspired small molecules.

SERTA Domain Containing Protein 1 (SERTAD1) Interacts with Classical Swine Fever Virus Structural Glycoprotein E2, Which Is Involved in Virus Virulence in Swine

E2 is the major structural glycoprotein of the classical swine fever virus (CSFV). E2 has been shown to be involved in important virus functions such as replication and virulence in swine. Using the yeast two-hybrid system, we previously identified several host proteins specifically interacting with CSFV E2. Here, we analyze the protein interaction of E2 with SERTA domain containing protein 1 (SERTAD1), a factor involved in the stimulation of the transcriptional activities of different host genes. We have confirmed that the interaction between these two proteins occurs in CSFV-infected swine cells by using a proximity ligation assay and confocal microscopy. Amino acid residues in the CSFV E2 protein that are responsible for mediating the interaction with SERTAD1 were mapped by a yeast two-hybrid approach using a randomly mutated E2 library. Using that information, a recombinant CSFV mutant (E2ΔSERTAD1v) that harbors substitutions in those residues mediating the protein-interaction with SERTAD1 was developed and used to study the role of the E2-SERTAD1 interaction in viral replication and virulence in swine. CSFV E2ΔSERTAD1v, when compared to the parental BICv, showed a clearly decreased ability to replicate in the SK6 swine cell line and a more severe replication defect in primary swine macrophage cultures. Importantly, 80% of animals infected with E2ΔSERTAD1v survived infection, remaining clinically normal during the 21-day observational period. This result would indicate that the ability of CSFV E2 to bind host SERTAD1 protein during infection plays a critical role in virus virulence.

Epidemiologic Factors Supporting Triage of Infected Dog Patients Admitted to a Veterinary Hospital Biological Isolation and Containment Unit

The teaching hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Lisbon hosts a Biological Isolation and Containment Unit (BICU) for the hospitalization of both confirmed and suspected animals of an infectious disease. This study targets the BICU dog population to identify and characterize the most frequent infectious diseases recorded in a 7-year period. Several epidemiologic factors were analyzed for their significance to triage infected cases. During the study period, 534 dogs were admitted, of which 263 (49.3%) had a confirmed infectious disease diagnosis: parvovirosis (49.4%; n = 130); leptospirosis (21.7%; n = 57); multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infection; (10.6%; n = 28), and canine distemper (9.9%; n = 26). Several potential risk factors for these diseases were identified: age under 2 years old (p < 0.001), incomplete vaccination for parvovirosis (p < 0.001), age ≥ 10 years old (p < 0.001), and the presence of concomitant disorders for MDR-infected cases (p = 0.03). Logistic regression models were constructed to classify cases and controls. The sensitivity and specificity estimates were very high (>0.83) for parvovirosis, MDR, and distemper infections. A lower sensitivity (0.77) was obtained for identifying cases with leptospirosis. In conclusion, infectious diseases are frequent, hence, it is essential to decrease their occurrence through effective preventive measures such as vaccination. The constructed logistic models can also help in triaging admitted dogs with a potential infectious disease.
