Method of solvent-free manufacturing of composite electrodes incorporating radiation curable binders

A method of making an electrode includes the step of mixing active material particles, radiation curable resin precursors, and electrically conductive particles to create an electrode precursor mixture. The electrode precursor mixture is electrostatically sprayed onto a current collector to provide an electrode preform. The electrode preform is heated and calendered to melt the resin precursor such that the resin precursor surrounds the active particles and electrically conductive particles. Radiation is applied to the electrode preform sufficient to cure the radiation curable resin precursors into resin.

Efficient Prompt Scintillation and Fast Neutron-Gamma Ray Discrimination Using Amorphous Blends of Difluorenylsilane Organic Glass and in-situ Polymerized Vinyltoluene

High performance radiation detection materials are an integral part of national security, medical imaging, and nuclear physics applications. Those that offer compositional and manufacturing versatility are of particular interest. In this work, we report a new family of radiological particle-discriminating scintillators containing bis(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2- yl)diphenylsilane (compound “P2”) and in-situ polymerized vinyltoluene (PVT) that is phase stable and mechanically robust at any blend ratio. The gamma-ray light yield increases nearly linearly across the composition range, to ~16,400 photons/MeV at 75 % wt. P2. These materials are also capable of γ/n pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and between 20-50 % P2 loading are competitive with the PSD quality of commercially-available plastic scintillators. The 137 Cs scintillation rise and decay times are sensitive to P2 loading and approach the values for “pure” P2. Additionally, the radiation detection performance of P2-PVT blends can be made stable in 60°C air for at least 1.5 months with the application of a thin film of poly(vinylalcohol) to the scintillator surfaces.

Infrared fluorescent coatings

The present invention provides for a composition comprising a pigment, wherein the composition is suitable for coating a surface that is, or is expected to be, exposed to the sun. The pigment comprises particles that fluoresce in sunlight, thereby remaining cooler in the sun than coatings pigmented with non-fluorescent particles. The particles comprise solids that fluoresce or glow in the visible or near infrared (NIR) spectra, or that fluoresce when doped. Suitable dopants include, but are not limited to, ions of rare earths and transition metals. A coating composition includes: (i) a film-forming resin; (ii) an infrared reflective pigment; and (iii) an infrared fluorescent pigment different from the infrared reflective pigment. When the coating composition is cured to form a coating and exposed to radiation comprising fluorescence-exciting radiation, the coating has a greater effective solar reflectance (ESR) compared to the same coating exposed to the radiation comprising fluorescence-exciting radiation except without the infrared fluorescent pigment. A multi-layer coating including the coating composition, and a substrate at least partially coated with the coating composition is also disclosed. A method of reducing temperature of an article includes applying the coating composition to at least a portion of the article.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes Enabled by a Graphite Conductive Additive

Cobalt-free cation-disordered rocksalt (DRX) cathodes are a promising class of materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries. Although they have high theoretical specific capacities (>300 mA h/g) and moderate operating voltages (~3.5 V vs Li/Li + ), DRX cathodes typically require a high carbon content (up to 30 wt %) to fully utilize the active material which has a detrimental impact on cell-level energy density. To assess pathways to reduce the electrode’s carbon content, the present study investigates how the carbon’s microstructure and loading (10–20 wt %) influence the performance of DRX cathodes with the nominal composition Li 1.2 Mn 0.5 Ti 0.3 O 1.9 F 0.1 . While electrodes prepared with conventional disordered carbon additives (C65 and ketjenblack) exhibit rapid capacity fade due to an unstable cathode/electrolyte interface, DRX cathodes containing 10 wt % graphite show superior cycling performance (e.g., reversible capacities ~260 mA h/g with 85% capacity retention after 50 cycles) and rate capability (~135 mA h/g at 1000 mA/g). Furthermore, a suite of characterization tools was employed to evaluate the performance differences among these composite electrodes. Overall, these results indicate that the superior performance of the graphite-based cathodes is largely attributed to the: (i) formation of a uniform graphitic coating on DRX particles which protects the surface from parasitic reactions at high states of charge and (ii) homogeneous dispersion of the active material and carbon throughout the composite cathode which provides a robust electronically conductive network that can withstand repeated charge–discharge cycles. Overall, this study provides key scientific insights on how the carbon microstructure and electrode processing influence the performance of DRX cathodes. Based on these results, exploration of alternative routes to apply graphitic coatings is recommended to further optimize the material performance.

Calcination Heterogeneity in Li-Rich Layered Oxides: A Systematic Study of Li 2 CO 3 Particle Size

Li- and Mn-rich (LMR) layered oxide positive-electrode materials exhibit high energy density and have earth-abundant compositions relative to conventional Ni-, Mn-, and Co-oxides (NMCs). The lithiation of coprecipitated precursors is a key part of the synthesis and offers opportunities for tuning the properties of LMR materials. Whereas the morphology of transition metal precursors has received substantial attention, that of Li sources has not. Using Li 1.14 Mn 0.57 Ni 0.29 O 2 as a model system, in this work, we establish a detailed understanding of LMR calcination pathways via in situ and ex situ diffraction, spectroscopy, microscopy, and thermogravimetry. Our work shows that a large Li 2 CO 3 particle size modulates a previously misunderstood thermogravimetric feature present at the Li 2 CO 3 melting point during layered oxide calcination and causes heterogeneity at larger length scales (inter-secondary particle) than previously reported (intra-secondary particle). We found that electrochemical performance is largely insensitive to this heterogeneity. Finally, this work highlights the sensitivity of layered oxide calcination pathways to synthesis conditions and suggests design rules to minimize calcination heterogeneity in layered oxides beyond LMR.

Additive Manufacturing of Pure Mo and Mo + TiC MMC Alloy by Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

A metal matrix composite powder of molybdenum (Mo) + TiC was produced by mechanical alloying (MA) and used in additive manufacturing by electron beam powder bed fusion along with pure Mo powder to form sandwich structures. The Mo + TiC solid layers formed mixed structures of Mo with discrete TiC particles, eutectic Mo + TiC, and Mo dendrites. Thermodynamic modeling showed that the system contained an invariant eutectic reaction in the composition range used and indicated that the system was highly sensitive to changes in composition and temperature.

Coprecipitation of Fe/Cr Hydroxides at Organic–Water Interfaces: Functional Group Richness and (De)protonation Control Amounts and Compositions of Coprecipitates

Iron/chromium hydroxide coprecipitation controls the fate and transport of toxic chromium (Cr) in many natural and engineered systems. Organic coatings on soil and engineered surfaces are ubiquitous; however, mechanistic controls of these organic coatings over Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation are poorly understood. Here, Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation was conducted on model organic coatings of humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The organics bonded with SiO 2 through ligand exchange with carboxyl (-COOH), and the adsorbed amounts and pK(a) values of -COOH controlled surface charges of coatings. The adsorbed organic films also had different complexation capacities with Fe/Cr ions and Fe/Cr hydroxide particles, resulting in significant differences in both the amount (on HA > SA(-COOH) >> BSA(-NH 2 )) and composition (Cr/Fe molar ratio: on BSA(-NH2) >> HA > SA(-COOH)) of heterogeneous precipitates. Negatively charged -COOH attracted more Fe ions and oligomers of hydrolyzed Fe/Cr species and subsequently promoted heterogeneous precipitation of Fe/Cr hydroxide nanoparticles. Organic coatings containing -NH 2 were positively charged at acidic pH because of the high pK(a) value of the functional group, limiting cation adsorption and formation of coprecipitates. Meanwhile, the higher local pH near the -NH 2 coatings promoted the formation of Cr(OH) 3 . Finally, this study advances fundamental understanding of heterogeneous Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation on organics, which is essential for successful Cr remediation and removal in both natural and engineered settings, as well as the synthesis of Cr-doped iron (oxy)hydroxides for material applications.

Nanoscopic strain evolution in single-crystal battery positive electrodes

Single-crystal Ni-rich layered oxides (SC-NMC) with a grain-boundary-free configuration have effectively addressed the long-standing cracking issue of conventional polycrystalline Ni-rich materials (PC-NMC) in lithium-ion batteries, prompting a shift in optimization strategies. However, continued reliance on anisotropic lattice volume change—a well-established failure indicator in PC-NMC—as a metric for understanding strain and guiding compositional design for SC-NMC becomes controversial. Here, in this study, by leveraging multiscale diagnostic techniques, we unravelled the distinct nanoscopic strain evolution in SC-NMC during battery operation, challenging the conventional composition-driven strategies and mechanical degradation indicators used for PC-NMC. Through particle-level chemomechanical analysis, we reveal a decoupling between mechanical stability and lattice volume change in SC-NMC, identifying that structural instability in SC materials is primarily driven by multidimensional lattice distortions induced by kinetics-driven reaction heterogeneity and progressively deactivating chemical phases. Using this mechanical failure mode, we redefine the roles of cobalt and manganese in maintaining mechanical stability. Unlike cobalt’s detrimental role in PC-NMC, we find cobalt to be critical in enhancing the longevity of SC-NMC by mitigating localized strain along the extended diffusion pathway, whereas manganese exacerbates mechanical degradation.

Cation reordering instead of phase transitions: Origins and implications of contrasting lithiation mechanisms in 1D ζ- and 2D α-V 2 O 5

Substantial improvements in cycle life, rate performance, accessible voltage, and reversible capacity are required to realize the promise of Li-ion batteries in full measure. Here, we have examined insertion electrodes of the same composition (V 2 O 5 ) prepared according to the same electrode specifications and comprising particles with similar dimensions and geometries that differ only in terms of their atomic connectivity and crystal structure, specifically two-dimensional (2D) layered α-V 2 O 5 that crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group and one-dimensional (1D) tunnel-structured ζ-V 2 O 5 crystallized in a monoclinic space group. By using particles of similar dimensions, we have disentangled the role of specific structural motifs and atomistic diffusion pathways in affecting electrochemical performance by mapping the dynamical evolution of lithiation-induced structural modifications using ex situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements, and phase-field modeling. We find the operation of sharply divergent mechanisms to accommodate increasing concentrations of Li-ions: a series of distortive phase transformations that result in puckering and expansion of interlayer spacing in layered α-V 2 O 5 , as compared with cation reordering along interstitial sites in tunnel-structured ζ-V 2 O 5 . By alleviating distortive phase transformations, the ζ-V 2 O 5 cathode shows reduced voltage hysteresis, increased Li-ion diffusivity, alleviation of stress gradients, and improved capacity retention. The findings demonstrate that alternative lithiation mechanisms can be accessed in metastable compounds by dint of their reconfigured atomic connectivity and can unlock substantially improved electrochemical performance not accessible in the thermodynamically stable phase.

Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS)-Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) Merged Size Distribution (mergedsmpsaps) Value-Added Product Report

Aerosol particles influence the Earth’s radiation balance directly by absorbing and scattering light and indirectly by influencing cloud formation, properties, and lifetimes. Measurements of aerosol particle optical properties, mass loading, size distributions, microphysical properties, cloud formation properties, and chemical composition are important for understanding the aerosol life cycle and for validating earth system models that predict these quantities. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Aerosol Observing System (AOS) is a highly instrumented platform designed to house instruments that measure many of these aerosol properties in situ. Currently, ARM operates at least four different instruments that measure a portion of the ambient aerosol size distribution. Most users are interested in the entire size distribution or a portion of the size distribution that extends across the measurement range of multiple instruments. However, merging these distributions is not trivial as the instruments employ different measurement principals and, in most cases, report data as a function of different representations of the aerosol diameter.

Direct Ink-Write Printing of Ceramic Clay with an Embedded Wireless Temperature and Relative Humidity Sensor

This research presents a simple method to additively manufacture Cone 5 porcelain clay ceramics by using the direct ink-write (DIW) printing technique. DIW has allowed the application of extruding highly viscous ceramic materials with relatively high-quality and good mechanical properties, which additionally allows a freedom of design and the capability of manufacturing complex geometrical shapes. Clay particles were mixed with deionized (DI) water at different ratios, where the most suitable composition for 3D printing was observed at a 1:5 w/c ratio (16.2 wt.%. of DI water). Differential geometrical designs were printed to demonstrate the printing capabilities of the paste. In addition, a clay structure was fabricated with an embedded wireless temperature and relative humidity (RH) sensor during the 3D printing process. The embedded sensor read up to 65% RH and temperatures of up to 85 °F from a maximum distance of 141.7 m. The structural integrity of the selected 3D printed geometries was confirmed through the compressive strength of fired and non-fired clay samples, with strengths of 70 MPa and 90 MPa, respectively. This research demonstrates the feasibility of using the DIW printing of porcelain clay with embedded sensors, with fully functional temperature- and humidity-sensing capabilities.

New signature method for identifying organic material in atmosphere and water samples

The levels of plastic contamination in the earth’s oceans have steadily increased over the past century, creating a threat to marine life and increasing climate change. Several methods have been developed over the past decade to try to determine the amount and accumulation rate of plastic impurities in the ecosystem. These methods have proven promising but suffer from long measurement times, bulky non-mobile systems, and sample degradation. We propose a smaller, faster system that employs an electron beam to examine seawater samples for polyethylene contamination levels. This process generates a full electron and photon energy spectrum analyses based on the subatomic particles generated from electron interactions. Our simulations have already been developed based on the known molecular composition of seawater and polyethylene, showing the possibility of discerning molecular plastics from microorganisms. With a system the size of a suitcase, this system would be easily deployable to remote locations around the world or installed as a monitoring system for manufacturing facilities. This concept could lead to a new methodology for the science of signatures and be applied to other biological hazard investigations, such as general virus detection.
