Color Transparency and Light-Front Holographic QCD

Color transparency, the reduction of initial-state or final-state interactions in coherent nuclear processes, is a natural prediction of QCD (quantum chromodynamics) provided that small-sized or point-like configurations (PLCs) are formed in high-momentum transfer, high-energy, semi-exclusive processes. I use the Frankfurt-Miller-Strikman criteria for the existence of PLCs to show that the wave functions of light-front holographic QCD, as currently formulated, do not contain a PLC.

Zwicky Transient Facility and Globular Clusters: the Period–Luminosity and Period–Luminosity–Color Relations for Late-type Contact Binaries

In this work, we aimed to derive the gri-band period–luminosity (PL) and period–luminosity–color (PLC) relations for late-type contact binaries, for the first time, located in globular clusters, using the homogeneous light curves collected by the Zwicky Transient Factory (ZTF). We started with 79 contact binaries in 15 globular clusters, and retained 30 contact binaries in 10 globular clusters that have adequate numbers of data points in the ZTF light curves and are unaffected by blending. Magnitudes at mean and maximum light of these contact binaries were determined using a fourth-order Fourier expansion, while extinction corrections were done using the Bayerstar2019 3D reddening map together with adopting the homogeneous distances to their host globular clusters. After removing early-type and “anomaly” contact binaries, our derived gri-band PL and period–Wesenheit (PW) relations exhibited a much larger dispersion with large errors on the fitted coefficients. Nevertheless, the gr-band PL and PW relations based on this small sample of contact binaries in globular clusters were consistent with those based on a larger sample of nearby contact binaries. Good agreements of the PL and PW relations suggested both samples of contact binaries in the local Solar neighborhood and in the distant globular clusters can be combined and used to derive and calibrate the PL, PW, and PLC relations. The final derived gr-band PL, PW, and PLC relations were much improved over those based on the limited sample of contact binaries in the globular clusters.

Star Formation Histories from Spectral Energy Distributions and Color–magnitude Diagrams Agree: Evidence for Synchronized Star Formation in Local Volume Dwarf Galaxies over the Past 3 Gyr

Star formation histories (SFHs) reveal physical processes that influence how galaxies form their stellar mass. We compare the SFHs of a sample of 36 nearby (D ≲ 4 Mpc) dwarf galaxies from the ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST), inferred from the color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of individually resolved stars in these galaxies, with those reconstructed by broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using the dense basis SED-fitting code. When comparing individual SFHs, we introduce metrics for evaluating SFH reconstruction techniques. For both the SED and CMD methods, the median normalized SFH of galaxies in the sample shows a period of quiescence at lookback times of 3–6 Gyr followed by rejuvenated star formation over the past 3 Gyr that remains active until the present day. To determine if these represent special epochs of star formation in the D <4 Mpc portion of the Local Volume, we break this ANGST dwarf galaxy sample into subsets based on specific star formation rate and spatial location. Modulo offsets between the methods of about 1 Gyr, all subsets show significant decreases and increases in their median normalized SFHs at the same epochs, and the majority of the individual galaxy SFHs are consistent with these trends. These results motivate further study of potential synchronized star formation quiescence and rejuvenation in the Local Volume as well as development of a hybrid method of SFH reconstruction that combines CMDs and SEDs, which have complementary systematics.

Coordinated JWST Imaging of Three Distance Indicators in a Supernova Host Galaxy and an Estimate of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch Color Dependence

Boasting a 6.5 m mirror in space, JWST can increase by several times the number of supernovae (SNe) to which a redshift-independent distance has been measured with a precision distance indicator (e.g., tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) or Cepheids); the limited number of such SN calibrators currently dominates the uncertainty budget in distance ladder Hubble constant (H 0 ) experiments. JWST/NIRCAM imaging of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4536 is used here to preview JWST program GO-1995, which aims to measure H 0 using three stellar distance indicators (Cepheids, TRGB, and J-branch asymptotic giant branch/carbon stars). Each population of distance indicator was here successfully detected—with sufficiently large number statistics, well-measured fluxes, and characteristic distributions consistent with ingoing expectations—so as to confirm that we can acquire distances from each method precise to about 0.05 mag (statistical uncertainty only). We leverage overlapping Hubble Space Telescope imaging to identify TRGB stars, crossmatch them with the JWST photometry, and present a preliminary constraint on the slope of the TRGB's F115W versus (F115W – F444W) relation equal to -0.99 ± 0.16 mag mag -1 . This slope is consistent with prior slope measurements in the similar Two Micron All-Sky Survey J band, as well as with predictions from the BaSTI isochrone suite. We use the new TRGB slope estimate to flatten the 2D TRGB feature and measure a (blinded) TRGB distance relative to a set of fiducial TRGB colors, intended to represent the absolute fiducial calibrations expected from geometric anchors such as NGC 4258 and the Magellanic Clouds. In doing so, we empirically demonstrate that the TRGB can be used as a standardizable candle at the IR wavelengths accessible with JWST.

Photometric Recalibration of the SDSS Stripe 82 to a Few Millimagnitude Precision with the Stellar Color Regression Method and Gaia EDR3

By combining spectroscopic data from the LAMOST DR7, Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR12, and corrected photometric data from the Gaia EDR3, we apply the stellar color regression (SCR) method to recalibrate the SDSS Stripe 82 standard stars catalog of Ivezic' et al. With a total number of about 30,000 spectroscopically targeted stars, we have mapped out the relatively large and strongly correlated photometric zero-point errors present in the catalog, ~2.5% in the u band and ~1% in the griz bands. Our study also confirms some small but significant magnitude dependence errors in the z band for some charge-coupled devices. Various tests show that we have achieved an internal precision of about 5 mmag in the u band and about 2 mmag in the griz bands, which is about five times better than previous results. We also apply the method to the latest version of the catalog (v4.2), and find modest systematic calibration errors of up to ~1% along the R.A. direction and smaller errors along the decl. direction. The results demonstrate the power of the SCR method when combining spectroscopic data and Gaia photometry in breaking the 1% precision barrier of ground-based photometric surveys. Our work paves the way for the recalibration of the whole SDSS photometric survey and has important implications for the calibration of future surveys. Future implementations and improvements of the SCR method under different situations are also discussed.

DMTN-190: Consistent galaxy colors with Gaussian-Aperture and PSF photometry

Gaussian-Aperture and PSF photometry algorithm measures consistent colors for extended sources such as galaxies that are largely independent of seeing. This technote briefly presents the mathematical description of the algorithm and focuses on its implementation in the Rubin Science Pipelines. This document also serves as a reference for several of the analytical calculations that are tested in the unit tests.

Use of color-coded sleeve shutters accelerates oscillograph channel selection

Sleeve-type shutters mechanically adjust individual galvanometer light beams onto or away from selected channels on oscillograph papers. In complex test setups, the sleeve-type shutters are color coded to separately identify each oscillograph channel. This technique could be used on any equipment using tubular galvanometer light sources.
