Identification of atmospheric structure by coherent microwave sounding

Two atmospheric probing experiments involving beyond-the-horizon propagation of microwave signals are reported. In the first experiment, Doppler-shift caused by the cross path wind is measured by a phase lock receiver with the common volume displaced in azimuth from the great circle. Variations in the measured Doppler shift values are explained in terms of variations in atmospheric structure. The second experiment makes use of the pseudorandom sounding signal used in a RAKE communication system. Both multipath delay and Doppler shift are provided by the receiver, permitting the cross section of the atmospheric layer structure to be deduced.

Signal coherence studies in multiaperture arrays

A two-element array was constructed to measure the gain improvement that can be realized while tracking spacecraft. Measurements were made at VHF and S band. An automatically controlled time delay correction system was developed and tested for this program.

The use of the three dimensional coherency matrix in analyzing the polarization properties of plane waves

A technique for analyzing the polarization properties of plane waves is developed which offers a number of advantages over methods currently used in the analysis of both ground and satellite observations of waves. This technique reduces the computations required to find the wave normal vector, is less sensitive to common noise sources, and is amenable to analog implementation. This technique is applied specifically to the analysis of a proton whistler, but may also be used in most studies of ULF, ELF, and VLF magnetic wave phenomena.

Large-scale coherence and high velocities of the earth's bow shock on February 12, 1969.

The earth's bow shock exhibited a clean laminar profile at low Mach number as it crossed and recrossed Ogo 5, Heos 1, and Explorer 33 on February 12, 1969. The approximate 120 earth radii distance between Heos and Explorer during one set of crossings indicated the abrupt character of the laminar shock 'front' and the absence of magnetosheath turbulence both in the dayside hemisphere above the ecliptic and in the flank of the shock 75 earth radii behind the earth and below the ecliptic. The abruptness of the shock and coplanarity of the loci of Ogo and Heos with the local shock normal permit the most reliable estimates yet obtained of shock velocities along the normal. These mean velocities ranged from 11 to at least 100 km/sec over distances of 2-7 earth radii.

Avalanche diodes for the generation of coherent radiation

Solid state devices and characterization, and optimum imbedding networks for realizing best performance were investigated along with a barrier injection transit time diode. These diodes were investigated for possible application as microwave amplifiers and oscillators. Measurements were made of diode noise figures in the frequency ranges of 4 - 6 GHz. Initial results indicate that a noise figure of 6 - 8 db may be possible. Optimum device structure and fabrication techniques necessary for low noise performance were investigated. Previously published documents on electrodynamics are included.

Coherent Propagation of Charged Particle Bunches in Random Magnetic Fields

Cosmic ray particle transport in random magnetic fields is analyzed. Data cover particle transport in which q is greater than or equal to 2, and density inhomogeneities propagate in a wavelike fashion with very little dispersion. Physical interpretations rather than mathematical proofs are emphasized.

Collection and processing of data from a phase-coherent meteor radar

An analysis of the measurement accuracy requirement of a high resolution meteor radar for observing short period, atmospheric waves is presented, and a system which satisfies the requirements is described. A medium scale, real time computer is programmed to perform all echo recognition and coordinate measurement functions. The measurement algorithms are exercised on noisy data generated by a program which simulates the hardware system, in order to find the effects of noise on the measurement accuracies.

Coherent optical instrumentation for measurements of particle parameters

The application of cross-beam Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) for sizing small particles was investigated from September 1973 to August 1974. Theoretical results were obtained by analyzing the scattering characteristics of small particles in a cross-beam LDV system. Theoretical calculations based on scalar diffraction theory and Mie scattering theory were performed. Experimental results were also obtained to compare with theoretical predictions. It is concluded that the forward scattering characteristics of small particles in a cross-beam LDV system can be used for particle sizing.

Coherent ion acceleration at a density gradient

The paper describes a model, in which ions are accelerated against the direction of the electric field at a density gradient. A one-dimensional, inhomogeneous, steady-state is constructed, in which cold electrons stream relative to cold ions. The wavenumber and amplitude of the fluctuating potential are calculated, then used to compute the trajectories of representative ions trapped in the potential troughs. Ion acceleration to energies an order of magnitude greater than the applied potential is demonstrated.

Polarization tracking of a partially coherent signal using a double loop

We consider the problem of simultaneously estimating the phase and polarization angles of a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave. The solution of this problem has applications to space communications and ionospheric probing. The nonlinear stochastic characteristics of a cross-coupled double-loop implementation for the tracker are evaluated using the multidimensional Fokker-Planck equation. The exact stationary probability density is found for a special case of equal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the two loops. The stationary probability density is obtained for a general class of double loops when the two loop bandwidths differ greatly.

GEOS-C coherent C-band transponder test procedure for spacecraft level tests

Procedures for the performance of two tests (electrical and airlink) for the transponder are outlined. The C-band test console used in performing the above tests is described (circuit diagrams and block diagrams), and equipment specifications are given. Calibration of the test equipment is also discussed.

Exploiting the temporal coherence of repetitive satellite imagery

Imagery from ERTS or the Synchronous Meteorological Satellites, because of its precisely repetitive nature, is ideally suited both for subjective enhancement by time-lapse display and for objective measurements of changes with time. A hybrid system providing both viewing and image-processing functions is described. A representative application involves the measurement of changes in the aerial extent of snow cover within specified mountain watersheds. Subjective viewing of time-lapse sequences of the snow scenes provides valuable insight into the nature of numerous extraneous signals, permitting the interim implementation of operationally useful snow-measuring systems and hopefully leading toward the design of fully objective classifiers.

A coherent light scanner for optical processing of large format transparencies

A laser scanner is discussed in which the scanning beam is random-access addressable and perpendicular to the image input plane and the irradiance of the scanned beam is controlled so that a constant average irradiance is maintained after passage through the image plane. The scanner's optical system and design are described, and its performance is evaluated. It is noted that with this scanner, data in the form of large-format transparencies can be processed without the expense, space, maintenance, and precautions attendant to the operation of a high-power laser with large-aperture collimating optics. It is shown that the scanned format as well as the diameter of the scanning beam may be increased by simple design modifications and that higher scan rates can be achieved at the expense of resolution by employing acousto-optic deflectors with different relay optics.
