Doubly differential cross sections for galactic heavy-ion fragmentation

An abrasion-ablation T-matrix formulation is applied to the calculation of double differential-cross sections in projectile fragmentation of 2.1 GeV/nucleon O-16 on Be-9 and 86 MeV/nucleon C-12 on C-12 and Ag-108. An exponential parameterization of the ablation T-matrix is used and the total width of the intermediate states is taken as a parameter. Fitted values of the total width to experimental results are used to predict the lifetime of the ablation stage and indicate a decay time on the order of 10 to the -19th power sec.

Determination of the cross-sectional temperature distribution and boiling limitation of a heat pipe

A computer model is developed and verified which is capable of determining the cross-sectional temperature distribution within a heat pipe with an attached radiator fin; such heat pipes would be plugged into contact heat exchangers designed to carry heat from a space station habitation module to the radiator elements through a centralized fluid loop. The model can furnish information for determining the susceptibility of the monogroove heat pipe to boiling, as well as the location and magnitude of that boiling.

Cutoff wavenumbers and modes for annular-cross-section waveguide with eccentric inner conductor of small radius

Analytical expressions are derived for the cutoff wavenumbers and the corresponding modes in annular-cross-section waveguides having inner conductors of small radius. Waveguides with circular and rectangular outer boundary are considered. In the case of the circular eccentric annular waveguide, comparison is made between the values of cutoff wavenumbers computed from the expressions derived in this paper and data obtained by a more rigorous numerical technique.

Best estimate of luminal cross-sectional area of coronary arteries from angiograms

We have reexamined the problem of estimating the luminal area of an elliptically-shaped coronary artery cross section from two or more radiographic diameter measurements. The expected error is found to be much smaller than the maximum potential error. In the cae of two orthogonal views, closed form expressions have been derived for calculating the area and the uncertainty. Assuming that the underlying ellipse has limited ellipticity (major/minor axis ratio less than five), it is shown that the average uncertainty in the area is less than 14 percent. When more than two views are available, we suggest using a least-squares fit method to extract all available information from the data.

Total integral reactive cross sections for F + H2 yielding HF + H - Comparison of converged quantum, quasiclassical trajectory and experimental results

The paper reports converged quantum total integral reactive cross sections for the reaction F + H2 yielding HF + H, for initial rotational states j sub i = 0 and 1, using a time-dependent method. The results are compared to classical results and to the experimental results of Neumark et al. (1985). Strong quantum effects are found in the threshold region for both initial states (i.e., in the dependence of the reaction on initial state for low energies). The classical results agree better with experiment than do the quantum results; this appears to be due to errors in the potential used.

Method of characteristics design of a supersonic wind tunnel nozzle with square cross-section, supplement 3

Nozzle design codes developed earlier were modified and used in order to design a supersonic wind tunnel nozzle with square cross-sections. As part of the design process, a post-processing code that generates square nozzles from the output of the Sivells code was written. The method is based on the results of an axisymmetric method of characteristics code and an axisymmetric boundary layer code. These design codes are documented.

Determination of the cross section of the proton, pion and neutron inelastic interaction with lead and carbon nuclei at 0.5 - 5.0 TeV energies (PION experiment)

Experimental results on the cross section of the single pion, proton and neutron inelastic interaction with carbon and lead nuclei in the 0.5 to 5.0 TeV energy interval obtained on the PION installation (Mount Aragats, Armenia, 3250 m) are presented. For this purpose the (N pi)/(N p) and inelastic (p Fe)/(pi Fe) ratios measured directly on the installation as well as the calculated inelastic (p A)/(pi A) dependence on the target nucleus atomic numbers were used.

Application of the method of lines to planar transmission lines in waveguides with composite cross-sectional geometries

The analysis of a class of planar transmission lines in composite uniform waveguides which have a circular boundary over part of the cross-section and a rectangular boundary over the remainder is introduced. It is shown that the method of lines can be applied to such composite structures by taking advantage of the canonical geometry in each region. Results for the dispersion characteristics and impedance of a finline in such a structure are calculated.

Planar near-field scanning for compact range bistatic radar cross-section measurement

The design, construction, and testing of a low cost, planar scanning system to be used in a compact range environment for bistatic radar cross-section (bistatic RCS) measurement data are discussed. This scanning system is similar to structures used for measuring near-field antenna patterns. A synthetic aperture technique is used for plane wave reception. System testing entailed comparison of measured and theoretical bistatic RCS of a sphere and a right circular cylinder. Bistatic scattering analysis of the ogival target support, target and pedestal interactions, and compact range room was necessary to determine measurement validity.

Symmetric Resonance Charge Exchange Cross Section Based on Impact Parameter Treatment

Using a two-state impact parameter approximation, a calculation has been carried out to obtain symmetric resonance charge transfer cross sections between nine ions and their parent atoms or molecules. Calculation is based on a two-dimensional numerical integration. The method is mostly suited for hydrogenic and some closed shell atoms. Good agreement has been obtained with the results of laboratory measurements for the ion-atom pairs H+-H, He+-He, and Ar+-Ar. Several approximations in a similar published calculation have been eliminated.

About the Effect of Control on Flutter and Post-Flutter of a Supersonic/Hypersonic Cross-Sectional Wing

The control of the flutter instability and the conversion of the dangerous character of the flutter instability boundary into the undangerous one of a cross-sectional wing in a supersonic/hypersonic flow field is presented. The objective of this paper is twofold: i) to analyze the implications of nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics and physical nonlinearities on the character of the instability boundary in the presence of a control capability, and ii) to outline the effects played in the same respect by some important parameters of the aeroelastic system. As a by-product of this analysis, the implications of the active control on the linearized flutter behavior of the system are captured and emphasized. The bifurcation behavior of the open/closed loop aeroelastic system in the vicinity of the flutter boundary is studied via the use of a new methodology based on the Liapunov First Quantity. The expected outcome of this study is: a) to greatly enhance the scope and reliability of the aeroelastic analysis and design criteria of advanced supersonic/hypersonic flight vehicles and, b) provide a theoretical basis for the analysis of more complex nonlinear aeroelastic systems.
