20-kW Bi-directional Wireless Power Transfer System with Energy Storage System Connectivity

The severity of the economic impact caused by grid outages has been the driving factor for creating innovative solutions that increases interest for the deployment of distributed energy resources to reduce the impact of grid outages. This study presents a novel way of providing export power using bi-directional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for ac grid side power and mobile energy storage systems (ESSs) connectivity. The proposed concept here interfaces the EV batteries to the AC grid and also can redirect the power from the stationary ESS to grid, to EV batteries, or both simultaneously; providing the capabilities of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS). Results demonstrate the performance and the functionality of the system with overall efficiencies 93% to 97%, depending on the operating mode.

A Novel Bi-directional AC/DC - DC/AC Wireless Power Transfer System for Grid Support Applications

The severity of the economic impact caused by grid outages has been the driving factor for creating innovative solutions that increases interest for the deployment of distributed energy resources to reduce the impact of grid outages. This paper presents a novel topology for providing export power applications. Proposed topology can be used for grid (primary)-side of bi-directional wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, mobile energy storage systems (ESSs), and electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The proposed concept here achieves energy transfer between sources by using a hybrid frequency bi-directional ac/dc converter without an additional front-end converter stage compared to the conventional systems. Due to inherent merit of the proposed bi-directional ac/dc converter, ac input with 60 Hz grid frequency can be directly transferred through the wireless coils and can be directly converted to the dc. Results demonstrate the performance and the functionality of the single-phase bi-directional system with the input / output of 110 V ac,rms and 200 V dc at 1 kW power. Full paper will demonstrate the converter operation at 10 kW power level with additional features and control aspects.

Medium Voltage Solid State Transformer for Extreme Fast Charging Applications

A modular and scalable solid state transformer (SST) with direct medium voltage (MV) AC connectivity is proposed to enable DC extreme fast charging (XFC) of electric vehicles. Single-phase-modules (SPMs), each consisting of an active-front-end (AFE) stage and an isolated DC-DC stage, are connected in input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) configuration. The modular hardware is co-designed with decentralized control of the DC-DC stages where voltage and power balancing are achieved by each SPM using only its local sensor feedback; a centralized controller (CC) regulates the low voltage (LV) DC bus through the AFE stages without any sensor feedback form the SPMs. The controller architecture contrasts sharply with the prior art for MV AC to LV DC SSTs where high-speed bidirectional communication among SPMs and a CC are required for module-level voltage and power balancing, which severely limits the scalability and practical realization of higher voltage and higher power units. Detailed small-signal analysis and controller design guidelines are developed. Furthermore, a soft start-up strategy is presented. The proposed converter and control structure are validated through simulation and experimental results.

Design Optimization for Weighted Conduction Loss Minimization in a Dual-Active-Bridge-Based PV Microinverter

This manuscript presents a harmonic-superposition based frequency-domain approach for analysis and optimal design of a single-stage DAB-based DC-AC converter used in low-voltage DC to high voltage AC applications, such as PV microinverter. Specifically, two topological variations and correspondingly different modulation strategies involving up to four control variables (three phase shifts and switching frequency) are analyzed. Optimal trajectories of control variables are determined that result in minimized transformer RMS current at a given average power, while enforcing near-uniform ZVS. To make the design process holistic, an outer optimization loop is used to determine optimal values for the power transfer inductance (integrated as the transformer’s leakage inductance) and turns ratio, which minimize the weighted-average conduction loss contribution to the microinverter’s CEC efficiency. Based on the optimization analyses, a 400 W microinverter prototype is built and experimental results at one operating point are presented, achieving a measured efficiency of 92.8%.

DC Link Voltage Balancing of the Active Front-End for the Extreme Fast Charging Stations

One of the most important challenges of the extreme fast charging (XFC) stations is to balance the DC link voltages of the active front-end (AFE). The multilevel cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter is a great topology for the AFE applications due to the high power density, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and a low number of active and passive components. In this paper, a technique is proposed for balancing DC-link capacitor voltages of a three-phase CHB converter, when a phase shiftPWM modulation technique is used on all cells of the converter. To reach this goal, the redundant states of the CHB converters are used for generating different AC voltage levels by sorting the voltages of the converters. The proposed voltage balancing technique uses the principles that are employed for the DC link voltage balancing of the low-frequency modulation techniques to balance the DC link voltages of the CHB converter. As shown in this paper, the DC link voltages of the CHB converter can accurately be balanced very fast without using PI controllers, which are used in the conventional DC link voltage balancing techniques. A controller also is proposed which will be used to control the dq currents of the CHB converter. To verify the advantages of the proposed technique, the simulation results of the proposed technique will be carried out in a three-phase 7-cell CHB AFE.

An Active Detection Scheme for Sensor Spoofing in Grid-tied PV Systems

In this paper an active detection scheme for sensor spoofing (manipulated externally via a cyber attack) in grid-tied PV systems is discussed. The core of the proposed active detection scheme is to introduce a private (secret) watermarking signal into the control inputs of the DC-DC converter and DC-AC inverter stages to detect any malicious spoofing (manipulation) of voltage/current sensor measurements controlling both the DC-DC converter maximum power point tracking (MPPT) stage and the DC-AC inverter of the grid-tied PV system. Several types of possible spoofing mechanisms (attack models) are discussed. The proposed sensor spoofing attack detector system consists of injecting a small magnitude of digital watermarking signal (DWS) and conduct three statistical watermark tests on the reported sensor measurements to determine if a) the proposed system is healthy and operating as expected b) if sensor signals were spoofed (manipulated) externally or c) if a particular sensor is malfunctioning due to a faulty hardware. It is shown via extensive simulations that the proposed DWS approach is robust in detecting malicious external manipulation of sensors controlling the grid tied PV system. A testing platform is currently under development and the experimental results will be discussed in the conference presentation.

Development of a Power Electronics-based Testbed for a Flexible Combined Heat and Power System

A flexible combined heat and power (F-CHP) concept, enabled by a power electronics-based power conditioning system (PCS), has been recently proposed as a cost-effective way for supporting the grid with high penetration of renewable energy sources. To verify the design, control, and performance of the overall system, a laboratory-scale testbed is essential. This paper focuses on the development of a power electronics-based testbed for such a F-CHP system. The developed testbed can test the control, grid-connected mode operation, islanded mode operation, and mode transitions, including planned/unplanned islanding and reconnection, of the F-CHP system. In the grid-connected mode, both the steady state and transients of the ac grid can be emulated, and various grid support functions can be tested with the help of the developed PCS converter. In the islanded mode, the external ac loads can also be supported by the F-CHP system. Also, the central controller, which is implemented in a NI CompactRIO, can be tested. Experimental test results for the grid-connected mode, islanded mode, and mode transitions are provided to validate the testbed design.

Design Considerations for Developing 1.2 kV 4H-SiC BiDFET-enabled Power Conversion Systems

Bidirectional switches are essential for cycloconverter and matrix converter applications to facilitate single-stage AC-AC conversion without intermediate energy storage elements. The 1.2 kV 4H-SiC BiDFET was developed as the first monolithic bidirectional SiC power transistor. This paper describes the design considerations taken into account while creating the BiDFET device and developing custom packages for housing the switch in discrete form for low power applications and in module form for high-power applications. The realized switches are characterized for their on-state and switching performance. The versatility of the BiDFET device is demonstrated by operating a single BiDFET H-bridge in voltage-source-inverter and current-source-inverter topologies only by varying the gate bias on the individual BiDFETs and reversing the input-output connections.

Operation and Control of Soft Switching Solid State Transformer as a Virtual Synchronous Machine for Photovoltaic Application

Possibility for control and operation of a three-phase solid state soft switching transformer based as a virtual synchronous machine or synchronverter has been investigated in this paper. The soft switching solid state transformer is used as an interface between the ac grid and a photovoltaic power generation unit supported by a battery bank. The control architecture investigated in this paper is that of a synchronverter to achieve inertial support to the grid and local loads. The operation of the soft switching solid state transformer has also been investigated as a V S M during unbalanced/distorted grid voltage condition. Control objective to achieve oscillation free power transfer between the ports (photovoltaic, battery and grid) has been achieved. The presented architecture has been verified for several important case studies via numerical simulations based on MATLAB/Simulink domain.

Multiphysics Modeling of Hydrokinetic Turbine Energy Conversion System

Hydrokinetic turbines (HKTs) hold great promise as a renewable energy source, but high maintenance costs and limited energy output hinder their widespread adoption. The lack of comprehensive research on HKT drivetrain designs creates a knowledge gap in enhancing generation efficiency and cost reduction. A model of the HKT system with a focus on electric drivetrains and power converters is required to address this knowledge gap. This paper first introduces a MATLAB-averaged model integrating electrical-mechanical-thermal domains and aging behaviors within multi-time frames. Then a PLECS model, which incorporates maximum power point tracking and dq reference framed control for AC-DC-AC power converters, is enriched by a dynamic thermal model to predict fast transients accurately. These models optimize the design at the component level, resulting in improved integrated system performance. Furthermore, the validation of the models is carried out through hardware experiments for the averaged model and hardware-in-the-loop testing for the dynamic model.

Integrating Learning and Physics based Computation for Fast Online Transient Analysis

In this work, a novel method that integrates learning and physics based computation is developed for greatly accelerating the simulation of full power system transient trajectories. To solve the dynamic algebraic equations, the method replaces the time-consuming dynamic computation for generator dynamics with trained predictors, while retaining the time-efficient algebraic computation of solving AC-power flow (PF) for power systems. In particular, a predictor is trained for each generator, and the system trajectories are computed by alternating steps of calling the predictors and solving AC-PF. The proposed method also allows fully parallelizable training strategies and a flexible trade-off between training time and testing accuracy. Comprehensive evaluations of the proposed method for transient/dynamic contingency analysis of the New York/New England 16-machine 68-bus power systems demonstrate excellent performance and significant acceleration of computation.

Scalable Hybrid Classification-Regression Solution for High-Frequency Nonintrusive Load Monitoring

Residential buildings with the ability to monitor and control their net-load (sum of load and generation) can provide valuable flexibility to power grid operators. We present a novel multiclass nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) approach that enables effective net-load monitoring capabilities at high-frequency with minimal additional equipment and cost. The proposed machine learning based solution provides accurate multiclass state predictions while operating at a faster timescale (able to provide a prediction for each 60- Hz ac cycle used in US power grid) without relying on event-detection techniques. We also introduce an innovative hybrid classification-regression method that allows for the prediction of not only load on/off states but also individual load operating power levels. A test bed with eight residential appliances is used for validating the NILM approach. Results show that the overall method has high accuracy, good scaling and generalization properties.

Segmented Energy Routing for a Modular AC/DC Hybrid System

This article presents a modular ac/dc system with both distributed and centralized power ports for energy router (ER) applications. In each module of the described system, photovoltaic (PV) power generation units, battery-type energy storage (ES) units, and critical loads are connected to the cascaded H-bridge (CHB)-organized medium-voltage (MV) dc links, with fully distributed low-voltage (LV) dc power ports. Copies of modules share the centralized load bus and interact with an MV ac grid in parallel. Hybrid power port (HPO) assigns flexibility to the system but makes energy routings a necessity for stable operation. In this article, a segmented energy management strategy for the HPO-ER is proposed. In terms of the grid-side power transferring, the system ratings are intentionally designed to match significant power imbalance. Focally, a segmented energy management strategy is proposed to realize fully autonomous energy routing involving MV ac grid, distributed PV generations, distributed battery storages, and LV load. The system is proven to be stable using the derived impedance-based model considering the interaction between power blocks. The feasibility of the topology and control strategy is also verified through software simulation, laboratorial hardware prototype experiment, and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) emulation.

Analysis of Transformer Magnetizing Reactance Using Describing Function in Direct Power Control of Back-to-Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support

This paper presents a Port Controlled Hamiltonian based direct power control architecture for a back-to-back modular multilevel converter system connecting two ac sources at different frequencies. The system features advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE 1547-2018, implemented on the inverter side. The rectifier side controller ensures reference following for active and/or reactive powers and maintains the commanded dc bus voltage. The inverter side controller ensures power command following for active and reactive powers. The proposed control architecture is designed to suppress second harmonic oscillations in powers during unbalanced grid voltage sags by dynamically adjusting the currents on each ac side. This also ensures effective elimination of any second harmonic oscillations in the equivalent dc bus voltage. Validation is performed on an OPAL-RT real-time platform with case studies on unbalanced and balanced sags, demonstrating the controller's effectiveness during real time implementation. A reduced-scale laboratory prototype further verifies these case studies, with experimental results for balanced sags due to grid simulator limitations. The results confirm the robustness and efficiency of the proposed control strategy in ensuring stable and reliable operation under various grid conditions.

An Interior-Point Solver for Optimal Power Flow Problem Considering Distributed FACTS Devices

In this paper, we propose an AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) model considering distributed flexible AC transmission system (D-FACTS) devices, in which the reactance of D-FACTS equipped lines are introduced as decision variables. This is motivated by increasing interests in using D-FACTS devices to address system operational and cyber-security concerns. First, D-FACTS devices can be incorporated in real-time operations for economic benefits such as managing power congestions and reducing system losses. Second, D-FACTS devices can be utilized by moving target defense (MTD), an emerging concept against cyber-attacks, to prevent attackers from knowing true system configurations. Therefore, system operators can use the proposed ACOPF model to achieve economic benefits and provide the setpoints of D-FACTS devices for MTD at the same time. In addition, we rigorously derive the gradient and Hessian matrices of the objective function and constraints, which are further used to build an interior-point solver of the proposed ACOPF. Numerical results on the IEEE 118-bus transmission system show the validity of the proposed ACOPF model as well as the efficacy of the interior-point solver in minimizing system losses and generation costs.

Discrete and Integrated Solutions for Hybrid PV Plants Without Momentary Cessation in Low SCR and High Penetration PE Grids

With the increased penetration of power electronic (PE) based loads and sources, advanced solutions may be required for the enhancement of grid stability in regions with low short circuit ratio (SCR) and high penetration PE grids. The requirement of advanced solutions arises from the gradual paradigm shift of the electric grid from the traditional electric machine dominant system to a high penetration of PE-based system. One of the major challenges with such systems in recent times is the momentary cessation during alternating current (ac) grid transmission faults. During momentary cessation, PE-based resources cease to operate, thus creating probable reliability challenges for the grid. In this paper, potential feasible options to provide continuity of operation during such scenarios are presented. The options are considered through identifying upgrades in existing and upcoming discrete development of photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems (ESS) termed as discrete hybrid PV plants. Additionally, an advanced concept of integrated development of PV and ESS connecting to ac transmission grid links called multi-port autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS) is evaluated. The developed new solutions are evaluated for different grid use cases and scenarios in PSCAD.
