Threshold determining mechanisms for discharges in high voltage solar arrays

A theory is developed to account for the observed properties of discharges of solar arrays immersed in plasma. The theory is based on the assumption that a thin layer of insulating contaminant covers any metallic surface exposed to the plasma. Quantities derivable from the theory include a voltage threshold for arcing. The existence of the threshold and its predicted weak dependence on plasma density appear consistent with experimental results.

Voltage-temperature charge verification testing of 34 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium cells

This testing was designed to evaluate various voltage-temperature (V-T) charge curves for use in low-Earth-orbit (LEO) applications of nickel-cadmium battery cells. The trends established relating V-T level to utilizable capacity were unexpected. The trends toward lower capacity at higher V-T levels was predominant in this testing. This effect was a function of the V-T level, the temperature, and the cell history. This effect was attributed to changes occurring in the positive plate. The results imply that for some applications, the use of even lower V-T levels may be warranted. The need to limit overcharge, especially in the early phases of missions, is underlined by this test program.

High voltage characteristics of the electrodynamic tether and the generation of power and propulsion

The Tethered Satellite System (TSS) will deploy and retrieve a satellite from the Space Shuttle orbiter with a tether of up to 100 km in length attached between the satellite and the orbiter. The characteristics of the TSS which are related to high voltages, electrical currents, energy storage, power, and the generation of plasma waves are described. A number of specific features of the tether system of importance in assessing the operational characteristics of the electrodynamic TSS are identified.

LEO high voltage solar array arcing response model

A series of mathematical models were developed that describe the electrical behavior of a large solar cell array floating electrically in the low Earth orbit (LEO) space plasma and struck by an arc at a point of negative bias. There are now three models in this series: ARCII, which is a fully analytical, linearized model; ARCIII, which is an extension of ARCIII that includes solar cell inductance as well as load reactance; Nonlinear ARC, which is a numerical model able to treat effects such as non-linearized, i.e., logarithmic solar cell I/V characteristics, conductance switching as a solar cell crosses plasma ground on a voltage excursion and non-ohmic plasma leakage current collection.

The current-voltage relationship in auroral current sheets

The current-voltage relation within narrow auroral current sheets is examined through the use of high-resolution data from the high altitude Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite. The north-south perpendicular electric field and the east-west magnetic field are shown for three cases in which there are large amplitude, oppositely directed paired electric fields and narrow current sheets. These data are shown to indicate that there is a linear Ohm's law relationship between the current density and the parallel potential drop within the narrow current sheets. This linear relationship had previously been verified for large-scale auroral formations greater than 20 km wide at the ionosphere. The evidence shown here extends our knowledge down to the scale size of discrete auroral arcs.

The solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere current-voltage relationship

The global current-voltage relationship for the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system (SW-M-I) is investigated, restricting the study to strong southward IMF. The dynamo presently identified is on open field lines, and it operates at close to short circuit and at a fraction of the available power output. Control of the dynamo by ionospheric conductivity is discussed. Implications of the simulation results, including the relationship between open and closed field dynamos, the effect of solar wind conditions, the control of reconnection on the bow, the size of the open field line region, and the effects of increased auroral conductivity, are discussed.

Remote gate capacitance-voltage studies for noninvasive surface characterization

A measurement technique has been developed which allows noncontact capacitance-voltage measurements to be made using a gate electrode located remote from the semiconductor surface under study. With gate electrodes about 0.5 mm in diameter and gate to semiconductor separations of about 1500 A, it was possible to generate data entirely comparable to that obtained with integrated MIS structures but with the advantage that there was access directly to the free-semiconductor surface. This technique was applied to bulk single-crystal Si and InP samples.

Measurements of induced voltages and currents in a distribution power line and associated atmospheric parameters

The frequency and intensity of thunderstorms around the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) has affected scheduled launch, landing, and other ground operations for many years. In order to protect against and provide safe working facilities, KSC has performed and hosted several studies on lightning phenomena. For the reasons mentioned above, KSC has established the Atmospheric Science Field Laboratory (ASFL). At these facilities KSC launches wire-towing rockets into thunderstorms to trigger natural lightning to the launch site. A program named Rocket Triggered Lightning Program (RTLP) is being conducted at the ASFL. This report calls for two of the experiments conducted in the summer 1988 Rocket Triggered Lightning Program. One experiment suspended an electric field mill over the launching areas from a balloon about 500 meters high to measure the space charges over the launching area. The other was to connect a waveform recorder to a nearby distribution power line to record currents and voltages wave forms induced by natural and triggered lightning.

A high voltage power converter for space astronomy applications

A dc-dc low-power, high-voltage converter for use in space is described which furnishes a commandable, low-noise dc output in the range of 0 to -7500 V. The converter is suitable for biasing of detectors commonly employed in space astronomy, microchannel plates, photomultipliers, and gas discharge detectors. The converter's reliability has been demonstrated by accelerated life testing under thermal vacuum. The electrical and mechanical design, packaging, layout and fabrication techniques, and tests employed are described.

Voltage source ac-to-dc converters for high-power transmitters

This work was done to optimize the design of the components used for the beam power supply, which is a component of the transmitters in the Deep Space Network (DSN). The major findings are: (1) the difference in regulation between a six-pulse and a twelve-pulse converter is at most 7 percent worse for the twelve-pulse converter; (2) the commutation overlap angle of a current source converter equals that of a voltage source converter with continuous line currents; (3) the sources of uncharacteristic harmonics are identified with SPICE simulation; (4) the use of an imperfect phase-shifting transformer for the twelve-pulse converter generates a harmonic at six times the line frequency; and (5) the assumptions usually made in analyzing converters can be relaxed with SPICE simulation. The results demonstrate the suitability of using SPICE simulation to obtain detailed performance predictions of ac-to-dc converters.

LEO high voltage solar array arcing response model, continuation 5

The modeling of the Debye Approximation electron sheaths in the edge and strip geometries was completed. Electrostatic potentials in these sheaths were compared to NASCAP/LEO solutions for similar geometries. Velocity fields, charge densities and particle fluxes to the biased surfaces were calculated for all cases. The major conclusion to be drawn from the comparisons of our Debye Approximation calculations with NASCAP-LEO output is that, where comparable biased structures can be defined and sufficient resolution obtained, these results are in general agreement. Numerical models for the Child-Langmuir, high-voltage electron sheaths in the edge and strip geometries were constructed. Electrostatic potentials were calculated for several cases in each of both geometries. Velocity fields and particle fluxes were calculated. The self-consistent solution process was carried through one cycle and output electrostatic potentials compared to NASCAP-type input potentials.

Correlations between the interfacial chemistry and current-voltage behavior of n-GaAs/liquid junctions

Correlations between the surface chemistry of etched, (100) oriented n-GaAs electrodes and their subsequent photoelectrochemical behavior have been probed by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. GaAs photoanodes were chemically treated to prepare either an oxide-free near stoichiometric surface, a surface enriched in zero-valent arsenic or a substrate-oxide terminated surface. The current-voltage (I-V) behavior of each surface type was subsequently monitored in contact with several electrolytes.
