Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Ultrafast Closure Valve Use Cases

The purpose of this report is to document several use cases of the Ultra-Fast Closure Valve System (UCVS) at the Joint Actinide Shock Physics Experimental Research (JASPER) facility. The goal is to clearly identify the use cases so that an explosive hazard classification may be assigned.

Ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy on nonequilibrium systems (Final Report)

The goal of the project has been to theoretically investigate a wide variety of problems related to the use of X-ray spectroscopy in materials science to enhance the impact of the science done at DOE’s user facilities. The focus has generally been on obtaining a deeper understand of new types of X-ray spectroscopy and to provide support for experimentalist working in these fields.

Ultrafast probing of charge transfer dynamics with an XUV free-electron laser

We study charge transfer in dissociating molecules of 2-iodopropane (C 3 H 7 I) in a UV pump – XUV probe regime at the SACLA free-electron laser. Signatures of charge transfer from the recently dissociated iodine atom to the neutral propyl radical are observed in recorded 3D ion momentum distributions. This signature has evaded observation in previous related experiments. Detailed analysis of these signatures allows the identification of a region of internuclear separation where charge transfer occurs.

Probing Ultrafast Electron (De)localization Dynamics in Mixed Valence Complexes Using Femtosecond X-ray Spectroscopy (Final Report)

The central goal of this proposal was to directly visualize and quantify how electronic correlations, vibronic couplings, and local solute-solvent interactions control intramolecular electron motion on the femtosecond time scale. The proposed research program focused on solvated Ruthenium (Ru) based mixed-valence complexes, a prototypical class of transition-metal complexes, which are of significant interest for their potential applications in photochemical energy conversion. Electron movements following photochemical excitation are closely coupled with atomic/vibrational and solvent motion. To disentangle these various components requires tools designed to directly probe electron correlations and vibronic coupling (coherently coupled motions of electronic and vibrational coordinates) on the timescale of electron motion in the solution phase.
