Pattern recognition techniques for failure trend detection in SSME ground tests

The Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) is a complex power plant. To evaluate its performance 1200 hot-wire ground tests have been conducted, varying in duration from 0 to 500 secs. During the test some 500 sensors are sampled every 20 ms. The sensors are generally bounded by red lines so that an excursion beyond could lead to premature shutdown. In 27 tests it was not possible to effect an orderly premature shutdown, resulting in major incidents with serious damage to the SSME and test stand. The application of pattern recognition are investigated to detect SSME performance trends that may lead to major incidents. Based on the sensor data a set of (n) features is defined. At any time during the test, the state of the SSME is given by a point in the n-dimensional feature space. The history of a test can now be represented as a trajectory in the n-dimensional feature space. Portions of the normal trajectories and failed test trajectories would lie in different regions of the n-dimensional feature space. The latter can now be partitioned into regions of normal and failed tests. Thus, it is possible to examine the trajectory of a test in progress and predict if it is going into the normal or failure region.

Geometric versus finite element modeling current and future trends at Northrop

Engineering Automation at Northrop encompasses the various design and analytical phases of air vehicle development. Design systems addresses automation of engineering/tooling design and computer aided manufacturing processes. The analysis systems automate aeroelastic modeling and postprocessing analysis results. These systems interface with aircraft loft and geometric entities thru localized transfer techniques. However, total integration effort based on a geometric database nucleus with peripheral design, analytical and manufacturing systems is well underway. An outline of the present and future trends is presented to help channel the RPI effort in this direction.

Atmospheric trends in methylchloroform and the global average for the hydroxyl radical

ALE-GAGE (Atmospheric Lifetime Experiment-Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment) data obtained over the seven-year period from July 1978 to June 1985 are presented and interpreted. The data, combined with knowledge of industrial emissions, are used in an optimal estimation inversion scheme to deduce a globally average methylchloroform atmospheric lifetime of 6.3(+ 1.2, - 0.9) years (1 sigma uncertainty) and a globally averaged tropospheric hydroxyl radical concentration of (7.7 + or - 1.4) x 10 to the 5th radicals/cu cm (1 sigma uncertainty). These results provide the most accurate estimates yet of the trends and lifetime of methylchloroform and of the global average for tropospheric hydroxyl radical levels.

Global trends of measured surface air temperature

The paper presents the results of surface air temperature measurements from available meteorological stations for the period of 1880-1985. It is shown that the network of meteorological stations is sufficient to yield reliable long-term, decadal, and interannual temperature changes for both the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere, despite the fact that most stations are located on the continents. The results indicate a global warming of about 0.5-0.7 C in the past century, with warming of similar magnitude in both hemispheres. A strong warming trend between 1965 and 1980 raised the global mean temperature in 1980 and 1981 to the highest level in the period of instrumental records. Selected graphs of the temperature change in each of the eight latitude zones are included.

Recent trends related to the use of formal methods in software engineering

An account is given of some recent developments and trends related to the development and use of formal methods in software engineering. Ongoing activities in Europe are focussed on, since there seems to be a notable difference in attitude towards industrial usage of formal methods in Europe and in the U.S. A more detailed account is given of the currently most widespread formal method in Europe: the Vienna Development Method. Finally, the use of Ada is discussed in relation to the application of formal methods, and the potential for constructing Ada-specific tools based on that method is considered.

The absence of a color-distance trend in comets

New near-IR J-H and H-K observations of 23 comets have been obtained in the heliocentric distance range of 1 to 6 AU. No evidence is found for a color-distance trend in the present sample. Significant differences between the grain populations in different comets are pointed out. The results indicate that the color distributions are unimodal, and that, unlike asteroids, the comets cannot be classified into distinct color-defined groups.

Earth Radiation Budget Satellite extraterrestrial solar constant measurements - 1986-1987 increasing trend

From June 1986 through Nov 1987, the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) pyrheliometric measurements indicated that the solar constant was increasing approximately +0.02 percent per year. Earlier ERBS measurements indicated that the solar constant was declining approximately -0.03 percent per year during the 1984 through mid-1986 period. Since mid-1986 represents the beginning of solar cycle 22, it is believed that the reversal in the long-term solar constant trend may be linked to increased solar activity associated with the beginning of the 11-year sunspot cycle. The typical value of the solar constant was found to be 1365 Wm-2.

Climatology and trends of mesospheric (58-90) temperatures based upon 1982-1986 SME limb scattering profiles

Atmospheric temperature profiles for the altitude range 58-90 km were calculated using data on global UV limb radiances from the SME satellite. The major elements of this climatology include a high vertical resolution (about 4 km) and the coverage of the 70-90 km altitude region. The analysis of this extensive data set provides a global definition of mesospheric-lower thermospheric temperature trends over the 1982-1986 period. The observations suggest a pattern of 1-2 K/year decreases in temperatures at 80-90-km altitudes accompanied by 0.5-1.5 K/year increases in temperatures at 65-80-km altitudes.

Tropical Pacific climate trends since 1960

Merchant ship observations appear to indicate an increase in the strength of the surface winds in the tropical Pacific and elsewhere in recent decades. Here, trends in tropical Pacific sea surface temperature and sea level, which has repeatedly been shown to be closely related to the winds, are investigated. The results suggest that sea levels since 1960 have been rising oceanwide at about 3.5 cm/decade, while simultaneously tilting about 2 cm/decade higher in the east and lower in the west, and that surface temperatures have been rising about 0.6 C/decade. These results are not consistent with the apparent wind change; rather, they support the contention that the apparent wind changes are an artifact introduced by changes in measurement technique, and suggest that tropical Pacific winds may have actually decreased in strength.

On trends in historical marine wind data

Long-period variations which include a trend toward strengthening winds over the last three decades have on the one hand been suggested to be real climatic changes, and on the other artifacts of the evolution of measuring techniques. An examination is presently conducted of individual ship reports from three regions with high data densities, in order to resolve this dispute. Even with corrections for instrumental effects, the pre-1950 winds appear weaker than post-1950 winds; the most probable explanation is the absence of universal sea state and Beaufort force standards prior to 1946.

Latest trends in parts SEP susceptibility from heavy ions

JPL and Aerospace have collected a third set of heavy-ion single-event phenomena (SEP) test data since their last joint IEEE publications in December 1985 and December 1987. Trends in SEP susceptibility (e.g., soft errors and latchup) for state-of-the-art parts are presented. Results of the study indicate that hard technologies and unacceptably soft technologies can be flagged. In some instances, specific tested parts can be taken as candidates for key microprocessors or memories. As always with radiation test data, specific test data for qualified flight parts is recommended for critical applications.

Precise monitoring of global temperature trends from satellites

Passive microwave radiometry from satellites provides more precise atmospheric temperature information than that obtained from the relatively sparse distribution of thermometers over the earth's surface. Accurate global atmospheric temperature estimates are needed for detection of possible greenhouse warming, evaluation of computer models of climate change, and for understanding important factors in the climate system. Analysis of the first 10 years (1979 to 1988) of satellite measurements of lower atmospheric temperature changes reveals a monthly precision of 0.01 C, large temperature variability on time scales from weeks to several years, but no obvious trend for the 10-year period. The warmest years, in descending order, were 1987, 1988, 1983, and 1980. The years 1984, 1985, and 1986 were the coolest.

Global four-band spectral classification of Jupiter's clouds - Color/albedo units and trends

Voyager 2 digital images of Jupiter have been used to construct a global data base of cloud reflectance in four spectral bands: three wideband 'colors' with effective wavelengths at 431 nm, 564 nm, and 599 nm, plus the narrowband CH4 filter centered at 621 nm. This data base has been spectrally classified at 0.5 deg resolution to separate the complex scene into cloud color/albedo units on a pixel-by-pixel basis, revealing 20 distinct and five tentative units. These include both large, globally distributed units and very small, localized units. Global color maps and unit membership maps are used to highlight associations and trends.

Recent advances, trends and new perspectives via enthalpy-based finite element formulations for applications to solidification problems

The present paper describes recent advances and trends in finite element developments and applications for solidification problems. In particular, in comparison to traditional methods of approach, new enthalpy-based architectures based on a generalized trapezoidal family of representations are presented which provide different perspectives, physical interpretation and solution architectures for effective numerical simulation of phase change processes encountered in solidification problems. Various numerical test models are presented and the results support the proposition for employing such formulations for general phase change applications.
