Nonlinear filtering for random signals in statistically unknown noise.

Natural and effective formulation of the filtering problem involved in satellite orbit determination, aircraft navigation, and missile tracking. The problem arises because the environment of the sensor keeps changing from time to time, and it is quite impractical and sometimes impossible to collect the statistical data of the noise incurred in the observation. Computable filtering equations are deduced. The idea of invariant imbedding along with stochastic differential calculus is used to derive differential equations for the optimal estimate.

Rotor burst protection program: Statistics on aircraft gas turbine engine failures that occurred in commercial aviation during 1971

A program to develop criteria for the design of devices that will be used on aircraft to protect passengers and the aircraft structure from the lethal and devastating fragments generated by the disintegration of a gas turbine engine rotor is discussed. Statistics on gas rotor turbine failures that have occurred in commercial aviation in 1971 are presented. It is shown that 124 rotor failures occurred and 35 of these were uncontained. This figure is considered significantly high to justify continuation of the development program.

Statistical mechanics of negative temperature states

The dynamics of two-dimensional interacting line vortices is identical to that of the two-dimensional electrostatic guiding center plasma. Both are Hamiltonian systems and are therefore susceptible to statistical mechanical treatments. The predictions of the microcanonical ensemble are explored for this system. Interest focuses primarily on the regime of total positive interaction energy, which should be above the Onsager negative temperature threshold. Calculations of the probability distribution for a component by means of the central limit theorem are carried out in the manner of Khinchin. The probability distribution of a component reduced to the usual Gibbs distribution in the regime of positive temperatures, and is still explicitly calculable for negative temperatures. The negative temperature states are neither quiescent nor spatially uniform. Expressions for the temperature are explicitly provided in terms of the total particle energy and particle number. A BBGKY hierarchy can be derived for both temperature regimes. Numerical simulations involving solutions of the equations of motion of 4008 particles are presented.

Investigation of the Statistics of Pure Tone Sound Power Injection from Low Frequency, Finite Sized Sources in a Reverberant Room

The effect of finite source size on the power statistics in a reverberant room for pure tone excitation was investigated. Theoretical results indicate that the standard deviation of low frequency, pure tone finite sources is always less than that predicted by point source theory and considerably less when the source dimension approaches one-half an acoustic wavelength or greater. A supporting experimental study was conducted utilizing an eight inch loudspeaker and a 30 inch loudspeaker at eleven source positions. The resulting standard deviation of sound power output of the smaller speaker is in excellent agreement with both the derived finite source theory and existing point source theory, if the theoretical data is adjusted to account for experimental incomplete spatial averaging. However, the standard deviation of sound power output of the larger speaker is measurably lower than point source theory indicates, but is in good agreement with the finite source theory.

Statistical turbulence theory and turbulence phenomenology

The application of deductive turbulence theory for validity determination of turbulence phenomenology at the level of second-order, single-point moments is considered. Particular emphasis is placed on the phenomenological formula relating the dissipation to the turbulence energy and the Rotta-type formula for the return to isotropy. Methods which deal directly with most or all the scales of motion explicitly are reviewed briefly. The statistical theory of turbulence is presented as an expansion about randomness. Two concepts are involved: (1) a modeling of the turbulence as nearly multipoint Gaussian, and (2) a simultaneous introduction of a generalized eddy viscosity operator.

Performance of statistical energy analysis

Statistical energy analysis (SEA) methods have been developed for high frequency modal analyses on random vibration environments. These SEA methods are evaluated by comparing analytical predictions to test results. Simple test methods are developed for establishing SEA parameter values. Techniques are presented, based on the comparison of the predictions with test values, for estimating SEA accuracy as a function of frequency for a general structure.

Statistical determination of space shuttle component dynamic magnification factors

A method is presented of obtaining vibration design loads for components and brackets. Dynamic Magnification Factors from applicable Saturn/Apollo qualification, reliability, and vibroacoustic tests have been statistically formulated into design nomographs. These design nomographs have been developed for different component and bracket types, mounted on backup structure or rigidly mounted and excited by sinusoidal or random inputs. Typical nomographs are shown.

Statistics of bow shock nonuniformity.

The statistical occurrence of pulsation or oblique structure about the earth's generally nonuniform bow shock is estimated at selected points by combining a three-dimensional distribution of interplanetary field directions obtained for a six-day solar wind sector with an index of local pulsation geometry. The result, obtained with a pulsation index of 1.6, is a set of distribution patterns showing the dependence of the pulsation index on the field orientation at the selected shock loci for this value of the index.

Prediction and measurement of the proportionality constant in statistical energy analysis of structures.

The fundamental equation of statistical energy analysis (SEA) states that the average power flow between two coupled vibrating systems is proportional to the difference in their average modal energies. Under certain circumstances it is possible to estimate the proportionality constant by modifying system boundary conditions on the separated systems and calculating or measuring changes in the systems. Newland's estimate, based upon blocking part of the system, is reexamined, and limitations are discussed. Three alternative methods which circumvent blocking are presented. These were applied to predict power flow in experiments on coupled beams and on coupled plates wherein power flow through the coupling was measured directly as a product of force times velocity. The measurements support the fundamental SEA relation, including the null power point where the average modal energies are equal.

Quantum statistical mechanics of dense partially ionized hydrogen

The theory of dense hydrogen plasmas beginning with the two component quantum grand partition function is reviewed. It is shown that ionization equilibrium and molecular dissociation equilibrium can be treated in the same manner with proper consideration of all two-body states. A quantum perturbation expansion is used to give an accurate calculation of the equation of state of the gas for any degree of dissociation and ionization. The statistical mechanical calculation of the plasma equation of state is intended for stellar interiors. The general approach is extended to the calculation of the equation of state of the outer layers of large planets.

An experimental study of the temporal statistics of radio signals scattered by rain

A fixed-beam bistatic CW experiment designed to measure the temporal statistics of the volume reflectivity produced by hydrometeors at several selected altitudes, scattering angles, and at two frequencies (3.6 and 7.8 GHz) is described. Surface rain gauge data, local meteorological data, surveillance S-band radar, and great-circle path propagation measurements were also made to describe the general weather and propagation conditions and to distinguish precipitation scatter signals from those caused by ducting and other nonhydrometeor scatter mechanisms. The data analysis procedures were designed to provide an assessment of a one-year sample of data with a time resolution of one minute. The cumulative distributions of the bistatic signals for all of the rainy minutes during this period are presented for the several path geometries.

J-adaptive estimation with estimated noise statistics

The J-adaptive sequential estimator is extended to include simultaneous estimation of the noise statistics in a model for system dynamics. This extension completely automates the estimator, eliminating the requirement of an analyst in the loop. Simulations in satellite orbit determination demonstrate the efficacy of the sequential estimation algorithm.

Statistical analysis of low level atmospheric turbulence

The statistical properties of low-level wind-turbulence data were obtained with the model 1080 total vector anemometer and the model 1296 dual split-film anemometer, both manufactured by Thermo Systems Incorporated. The data obtained from the above fast-response probes were compared with the results obtained from a pair of Gill propeller anemometers. The digitized time series representing the three velocity components and the temperature were each divided into a number of blocks, the length of which depended on the lowest frequency of interest and also on the storage capacity of the available computer. A moving-average and differencing high-pass filter was used to remove the trend and the low frequency components in the time series. The calculated results for each of the anemometers used are represented in graphical or tabulated form.
