Determining the Role of Synthesis and Reaction Conditions on the Exposed Surface and Shape of ..beta..-Mo2C Catalysts

The production of drop-in quality biofuels typically can be achieved through catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass, followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of the vapor-phase product to reduce the oxygen content and stabilize the bio-oil product. To favor selectivity toward desired deoxygenation products, bifunctional catalysts with both acidic and hydrogenation sites are often employed. Due to both its oxophilicity and its ability to promote hydrogenation reactions, molybdenum carbide catalysts have shown promise for promoting the HDO of CFP vapors. However, the surface structure and composition of carbide catalyst particles are not well understood, precluding the establishment of fundamental structure-function relationships needed for the rational development of molybdedum carbide for HDO, as well as other reactions. For orthorhombic ..beta..-Mo2C, the (100) facet is largely studied for computational surface-reaction analyses, possibly due to its similarities with the close-packed (111) facet of noble-metal catalysts. However, it has previously been postulated through ab initio thermodynamic studies that the (111), (110), and (011) facets are most stable, though there is no consensus. Furthermore, while a majority of previous surface stability analyses of ..beta..-Mo2C focus on bulk terminations, the highly carburizing synthesis conditions and the use of ..beta..-Mo2C in carbon-containing reaction applications could introduce non-stoichiometric coverages of surface carbon. As such, this study uses ab initio thermodynamics calculations to assess the relative surface stability of the low-index facets of ..beta..-Mo2C, including consideration of varying the coverage of surface carbon. From this information, Wulff constructions are utilized to predict the synthesis and reaction condition-dependent shape and surface carbon composition of ..beta..-Mo2C catalyst particles.

Method for fabricating embedded nanostructures with arbitrary shape

A layered heterostructure, comprising alternating layers of different semiconductors, wherein one of the atom species of one of the semiconductors has a faster diffusion rate along an oxidizing interface than an atom species of the other semiconductor at an oxidizing temperature, can be used to fabricate embedded nanostructures with arbitrary shape. The result of the oxidation will be an embedded nanostructure comprising the semiconductor having slower diffusing atom species surrounded by the semiconductor having the higher diffusing atom species. The method enables the fabrication of low- and multi-dimensional quantum-scale embedded nanostructures, such as quantum dots (QDs), toroids, and ellipsoids.

The HUNTER Dynamic Human Reliability Analysis Tool: Development of a Module for Performance Shaping Factors

Human Unimodel for Nuclear Technology to Enhance Reliability (HUNTER) is a framework to support dynamic human reliability analysis (HRA) in communication with a variety of methods and tools. In this paper, how we have developed one of the HUNTER modules, the individual module for evaluating performance shaping factors (PSFs), is introduced. The PSF refers to any factor that influences human performance such as workload or complexity. It has been used for highlighting human errors and adjusting the error probabilities in the existing HRA. We consider the eight PSFs suggested in the Standardized Plant Analysis Risk-HRA (SPAR-H) method, which is the representative HRA method widely used in the nuclear field. To support our dynamic modeling using the eight SPAR-H PSFs, we reviewed human performance literature and developed data-based mathematical models to rate and quantify PSFs in the context of dynamic HRA. We also design the individual module composed of the two functions: 1) the PSF qualification function that automatically or manually evaluates a PSF level, and 2) the PSF quantification function that dynamically or statically determines the PSF multiplier values and integrate them to adjust human error probabilities (HEPs). How each function works with the SPAR-H PSFs and how the PSFs adjust the HEPs are investigated through literature and discussed in this paper.

The HUNTER Dynamic Human Reliability Analysis Tool: Development of a Module for Performance Shaping Factors

The Human Unimodel for Nuclear Technology to Enhance Reliability (HUNTER) is a framework to support dynamic human reliability analysis (HRA) in communication with a variety of methods and tools. This paper explores how we developed one of the HUNTER modules: namely, the Individual module for evaluating performance shaping factors (PSFs). A PSF is any factor that influences human performance (e.g., workload or complexity). In the existing HRA, they are used to highlight human errors and adjust error probabilities. We consider the eight PSFs suggested in the Standardized Plant Analysis Risk-HRA (SPAR-H) method, a representative HRA method widely used in the nuclear field. To support our dynamic modeling using the eight SPAR-H PSFs, we reviewed the human performance literature and developed data-based mathematical models to rate and quantify PSFs in the context of dynamic HRA. We also designed the Individual module to consist of two functions: (1) the PSF qualification function for automatically or manually evaluating PSF levels, and (2) the PSF quantification function for dynamically or statically determining PSF multiplier values and integrating them to adjust human error probabilities (HEPs). How each function works in regard to the SPAR-H PSFs, and how the PSFs serve to adjust the HEPs, were investigated via literature review and are discussed in this paper.

Simulation of gallium nitride vertical fin-shaped field effect transistor for use as thermal neutron detector

Through the use of a radiation detection system simulation framework, a gallium nitride vertical fin-shaped field effect transistor (FinFET) was studied for output response when utilized as a thermal neutron detector. The FinFET was assumed to had been backfilled with boron carbide, reactive to thermal neutrons. The GaN FinFET was modeled with radiation transport from MCNP, and the electronic transport from COMSOL Multiphysics. Fabricated FinFET devices (not neutron reactive) were tested to aid in the tuning of the COMSOL FinFET model. Through time-depenent studies, the drain current response pulse to simulated ionization due to single events lead to building of a database of device responses to radiation. By integrating the current pulses over time, the induced charge was calculated. Using the results of the radiation transport PTRAC file in combination with the induced charge database, an integrated charge spectrum was calculated.

Method for fabrication of sleeveless photonic crystal canes with an arbitrary shape

The fabrication of sleeveless canes utilizes a preform with an array of glass canes in the preform. At least one tube-sleeve encircles the array of glass canes and is secured to the array of glass canes. The array of glass canes is moved into a furnace wherein the array of glass canes is heated. The furnace is maintained at a furnace temperature within the range of 2000° C. to 1700° C. and the array of glass canes is drawn from the furnace. The drawing of the array of glass canes both scales down the glass canes and elongates the glass canes. Maintaining the furnace at a furnace temperature within the range of 2000° C. to 1700° C. assures that the array of glass canes and the glass canes maintain their original shape.

DESI DR1 Ly$α$ forest: 3D full-shape analysis and cosmological constraints

We perform an analysis of the full shapes of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) forest correlation functions measured from the first data release (DR1) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Our analysis focuses on measuring the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect and the cosmic growth rate times the amplitude of matter fluctuations in spheres of $8$$h^{-1}\text{Mpc}$, $fσ_8$. We validate our measurements using two different sets of mocks, a series of data splits, and a large set of analysis variations, which were first performed blinded. Our analysis constrains the ratio $D_M/D_H(z_\mathrm{eff})=4.525\pm0.071$, where $D_H=c/H(z)$ is the Hubble distance, $D_M$ is the transverse comoving distance, and the effective redshift is $z_\mathrm{eff}=2.33$. This is a factor of $2.4$ tighter than the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) constraint from the same data. When combining with Ly$α$ BAO constraints from DESI DR2, we obtain the ratios $D_H(z_\mathrm{eff})/r_d=8.646\pm0.077$ and $D_M(z_\mathrm{eff})/r_d=38.90\pm0.38$, where $r_d$ is the sound horizon at the drag epoch. We also measure $fσ_8(z_\mathrm{eff}) = 0.37\; ^{+0.055}_{-0.065} \,(\mathrm{stat})\, \pm 0.033 \,(\mathrm{sys})$, but we do not use it for cosmological inference due to difficulties in its validation with mocks. In $Λ$CDM, our measurements are consistent with both cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxy clustering constraints. Using a nucleosynthesis prior but no CMB anisotropy information, we measure the Hubble constant to be $H_0 = 68.3\pm 1.6\;\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}\,Mpc^{-1}}$ within $Λ$CDM. Finally, we show that Ly$α$ forest AP measurements can help improve constraints on the dark energy equation of state, and are expected to play an important role in upcoming DESI analyses.

Theoretical study of CH 3 Cl-N 2 line shapes in the ν 1 band. Line mixing effects in QR doublets and QQ k sub-branches

Line coupling and line mixing effects of CH 3 Cl lines in the ν 1 band perturbed by N 2 have been investigated. We have taken into account the non-diagonality of the exp(–S 2 ) operator within specified line spaces as well as the k-degeneracy of the transitions (due to the double degeneracy of the j,k levels with k ≠ 0). These transitions should be considered as doublets coupled by the line mixing process. A new problem appears in the calculation when the atom-atom potential model is introduced. In order to overcome this difficulty, a pragmatic approach is proposed. Comparisons of theoretically calculated matrix elements of W with measurements of QR(j,k) doublets as well as some QQ k sub-branches, which are strongly affected by line mixing, have been made. Finally, the results show that the formalism improved in this way leads to rather accurate predictions.
