Search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying in the CMS muon system is presented. A data sample is used corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV , recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Decay products of long-lived HNLs could interact with the shielding materials in the CMS muon system and create hadronic and electromagnetic showers detected in the muon chambers. This distinctive signature provides a unique handle to search for HNLs with masses below 4 GeV and proper decay lengths of the order of meters. The signature is sensitive to HNL couplings to all three generations of leptons. Candidate events are required to contain a prompt electron or muon originating from a vertex on the beam axis and a displaced shower in the muon chambers. No significant deviations from the standard model background expectation are observed. In the electron (muon) channel, the most stringent limits to date are set for HNLs in the mass range of 2.1–3.0 (1.9–3.3) GeV, reaching mixing matrix element squared values as low as 8.6 ( 4.6 ) × 10 - 6 .

BioXTAS RAW 2 : new developments for a free open-source program for small-angle scattering data reduction and analysis

BioXTAS RAW is a free open-source program for reduction, analysis and modelling of biological small-angle scattering data. Here, the new developments in RAW version 2 are described. These include improved data reduction using pyFAI ; updated automated Guinier fitting and D max finding algorithms; automated series ( e.g. size-exclusion chromatography coupled small-angle X-ray scattering or SEC-SAXS) buffer- and sample-region finding algorithms; linear and integral baseline correction for series; deconvolution of series data using regularized alternating least squares ( REGALS ); creation of electron-density reconstructions using electron density via solution scattering ( DENSS ); a comparison window showing residuals, ratios and statistical comparisons between profiles; and generation of PDF reports with summary plots and tables for all analysis. Furthermore, there is now a RAW API, which can be used without the graphical user interface (GUI), providing full access to all of the functionality found in the GUI. In addition to these new capabilities, RAW has undergone significant technical updates, such as adding Python 3 compatibility, and has entirely new documentation available both online and in the program.

Deployment of ADTimePix3 areaDetector Driver at Neutron and X-ray User Facilities

TimePix3 is a 65k hybrid pixel readout chip with simultaneous Time-of-Arrival (ToA) and Time-over-Threshold (ToT) recording in each pixel*. The chip operates without a trigger signal with a sparse readout where only pixels containing events are read out. The flexible architecture allows 40 MHits/s/cm² readout throughput, using simultaneous readout and acquisition by sharing readout logic with transport logic of superpixel matrix formed using 2x4 structure. The chip ToA records 1.5625 ns time resolution. The X-ray and charged particle events are counted directly. However, indirect neutron counts use 6Li fission in a scintillator matrix, such as ZnS(Ag). The fission space-charge region is limited to 5-9 um. A photon from scintillator material excites a photocathode electron, which is further multiplied in dual-stack MCP. The neutron count event is a cluster of electron events at the chip. We report on the EPICS areaDetector** ADTimePix3 driver that controls Serval*** using json commands. The driver directs data to storage and to a real-time processing pipeline and configures the chip. The time-stamped data are stored in raw .tpx3 file format and passed through a socket where the clustering software identifies individual neutron events. The conventional 2D images are available as images for each exposure frame, and a preview is useful for sample alignment. The areaDetector driver allows integration of time-enhanced capabilities of this detector into SNS beamlines controls and unprecedented time resolution.

Analytical Results from the Salt Batch 10 Routine DSSHT and SEHT Monthly Samples

Strip Effluent Hold Tank (SEHT) and Decontaminated Salt Solution Hold Tank (DSSHT) samples from several of the “microbatches” of Integrated Salt Disposition Project (ISDP) Salt Batch (“Macrobatch”) 10 have been analyzed for 238Pu, 90Sr, 137Cs, elemental constituents (Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy - ICPES), and in some cases anions (Ion Chromatography Anions - IC-A). The included tables contain the data. These samples are from Salt Batch 10 material recently introduced into the Modular Caustic-Side Solvent Extraction Unit (MCU) system. The DSSHT results are typical for this type of sample, although the dilution due to processing is lower than expected. The August sample is known to have incorporated large amounts of rain water and cannot be compared to other DSSHT samples. The SEHT sample results are typical except for the May sample which is known to have rain water and Contactor Drain Tank (CDT) material in it.

Measuring calcium content in plants using NEXAFS spectroscopy

Calcium is important for the growth and development of plants. It serves crucial functions in cell wall and cell membrane structure and serves as a secondary messenger in signaling pathways relevant to nutrient and immunity responses. Thus, measuring calcium levels in plants is important for studies of plant biology and for technology development in food, agriculture, energy, and forest industries. Often, calcium in plants has been measured through techniques such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and electrophysiology. These techniques, however, require large sample sizes, chemical extraction of samples or have limited spatial resolution. Here, we used near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy at the calcium L- and K-edges to measure the calcium to carbon mass ratio with spatial resolution in plant samples without requiring chemical extraction or large sample sizes. We demonstrate that the integrated absorbance at the calcium L-edge and the edge jump in the fluorescence yield at the calcium K-edge can be used to quantify the calcium content as the calcium mass fraction, and validate this approach with onion epidermal peels and ICP-MS. We also used NEXAFS to estimate the calcium mass ratio in hypocotyls of a model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana , which has a cell wall composition that is similar to that of onion epidermal peels. These results show that NEXAFS spectroscopy performed at the calcium edge provides an approach to quantify calcium levels within plants, which is crucial for understanding plant physiology and advancing plant-based materials.

Radial Profiles of the Binary Fraction in Elliptical Galaxies

The radial profile of the binary fraction may vary with environment and is of significant importance for studying the formation mechanisms of binary stars and their dynamical evolution within globular clusters and galaxies. However, existing studies remain limited to the Milky Way and its neighboring galaxies. Leveraging the method proposed by Zhang et al. for estimating the variation in the binary fraction from integrated spectral features, we analyze a sample of 513 elliptical galaxies drawn from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey to measure their radial binary fraction profiles. Our results show that after accounting for the effect induced by radial variations in the stellar population (SP), the median SP-subtracted binary fraction, $r^{\textrm{med}}_{\textrm{b,sub}}$, becomes approximately flat. For nearly all elliptical galaxies in our sample, the variation in the binary fraction relative to the galaxy center at 1R e is less than 5%. No clear correlation is found between the gradient of the binary fraction and the gradients of the SP properties. Moreover, we also compare differences between ultraviolet (UV) upturn and non-UV upturn galaxies. The overall binary fraction profiles and the SP properties of the non-UV upturn galaxies in our sample are comparable to those of the UV upturn galaxies. This similarity may arise from the presence of residual star formation in the non-UV upturn systems.

PCM bit detection with correction for intersymbol interference

For pulse code modulation bits, received signals are filtered by integrate and dump filter from which samples are directed to end of PCM bit. Threshold decision circuit determines level of sample voltage. Effects of interference of known past bit can be corrected by raising or lowering threshold voltage value.

Estimation of microwave absorption in the Jupiter atmosphere

A procedure for estimating the microwave absorption loss of the Jupiter atmosphere is presented. Estimation of microwave absorption by planetary atmospheres involves two different investigative disciplines (1) the determination of an acceptable model of the atmosphere itself and (2) the determination of the microwave attenuation rate applicable to each different volume sample of the atmosphere, and the integration of this loss over the varying radio propagation path for any given entry trajectory to obtain the total loss.

The effect of bandlimiting of a PCM/NRZ signal on the bit-error probability.

The explicit expressions for the intersymbol interference as a function of bandwidth-bit duration product and bit positions for PCM/NRZ systems operating in the presence of Gaussian noise and in a bandlimited channel are determined. Two types of linear bit detectors are considered, integrate and dump, and bandlimit and sample. Restriction of bandwidth results in a performance degradation. The degradation of signal-to-noise ratio is presented as a function of bandwidth-bit duration product and bit patterns. The average probability of bit errors is computed for various bandwidths. The calculations of the upper bound and lower bound on the error probability are also presented.

Whole-rock uranium analysis by fission track activation

We report a whole-rock uranium method in which the polished sample and track detector are separated in a vacuum chamber. Irradiation with thermal neutrons induces uranium fission in the sample, and the detector records the integrated fission track density. Detection efficiency and geometric factors are calculated and compared with calibration experiments.

Error behavior of multistep methods applied to unstable differential systems

The problem of modeling a dynamic system described by a system of ordinary differential equations which has unstable components for limited periods of time is discussed. It is shown that the global error in a multistep numerical method is the solution to a difference equation initial value problem, and the approximate solution is given for several popular multistep integration formulas. Inspection of the solution leads to the formulation of four criteria for integrators appropriate to unstable problems. A sample problem is solved numerically using three popular formulas and two different stepsizes to illustrate the appropriateness of the criteria.

High speed front end of the multimegabit telemetry demodulator detector

The high speed front end (HSFE) portion of the Multimegabit Telemetry Demodulator-Detector is discussed. The HSFE accepts in-phase and quadrature analog signals from the input signal conditioner. It samples them with analog-to-digital converters at maximum rate of 64 megasamples per second. The samples are processed digitally and the integrals of I, Q, and of their crossproduct over one symbol period are supplied at symbol rate to the rest of the system.

Total ozone variations 1970-74 using Backscattered Ultraviolet /BUV/ and ground-based observations

The most long-lived satellite set of ozone observations, to date, is that derived from the Backscatter Ultraviolet (BUV) ozone sensor on Nimbus 4 and extends from April 1970 through 1976. Unfortunately, this experiment suffered spacecraft power limitations which limited the spatial and temporal coverage and also appears to have suffered from long-term drifts which may be associated with changes in the instrument characteristics or the incident solar flux. Techniques have been developed to account for these problems, and this paper presents results of the BUV total ozone variations and compares them with those from ground-based observations, specifically the computations of Angell and Korshover (1978). After adjustments for the spatial gaps and comparison with concurrent Dobson ground-based observations, no significant trend was found in the BUV data over the years 1970-74. This finding is in contrast to a general decrease of about 2% during the same period appearing in the data of Angell and Korshover. The difference in these results is discussed in terms of the geographic sampling and the methods of hemispheric integration.

A catalog of IRAS observations of large optical galaxies

A catalog is presented of IRAS observations of 85 galaxies with blue-light isophotal diameters greater than 8 arcmin. The observations, data processing, and data measurement techniques are described, and total IRAS flux densities and integrated infrared emission properties of the sample are reported. Infrared brightness profiles of the detected galaxies and infrared surface brightness contour maps of the galaxies for which structural features were resolved are displayed. A classification scheme based on the degree of central concentration and spatial structure of the 60 micron emission of the best-resolved galaxies is proposed. The 60 micron and blue-light isophotal diameters of the largest galaxies are compared.
