Beam Coupling Impedances of Inter-cell Section in Scorpius Linac

The following technical note is prepared for distribution to external project collaborators. An inter-cell pumping section in the Scorpius linac contains a pumping grid with slots, bellows, and vacuum plenum. The beam coupling impedances of the inter-cell section are calculated with CST Studio. Important to note that all impedance values in the tech note below should be divided by a factor of 2 to obtain the beam coupling impedances in their standard definition; see reference for details.

NorthStar Facility Target Fab and Flow Testing - FY 21

The facility target fabrication and flow testing activity will consist of flow tests using the blower system at LANL to test the disk holder and target, both redesigned by the NorthStar prime contractor. The housing and transition system delivering helium cooling to the disc holder and target will be fabricated and tested at LANL facilities. The tests will include pressure drop versus flow measurements through the target and housing, optical flow diagnostics and fiber optic imaging of the disc stack. The pressure drop measurements will be compared to CFD simulations to verify the latter, the optical flow diagnostics will be used to determine whether modifications made to the housing and target holder allow sufficient flow through the bottom of the housing to adequately cool it and the fiber optics will be used to image the discs during operation as a proof of concept of the diagnostic, to be used at NorthStar facilities during preproduction testing. The work is a Partial Fulfillment of the Deliverable Requirement for NorthStar Facility Target Fab and Flow Testing and Production Target Testing Support by LANL

High Brightness High Duty Factor Negative Ion Beam Injector [Slides]

The high brightness negative ion injector combines multiple individual low-duty-factor H- ion sources (multiplexing) in a manner that allows flexibility in final pulse format and beam duty factor up to CW and increases reliability by eliminating an otherwise single-point failure usually associated with using a single ion source. The multiplexing of multiple beams in new injector system also preserves the beam quality of each individual ion source, eliminating a significant source of beam quality degradation usually associated with combining beams.

Evaluation of Synthetic Diamond Detectors for Fast Neutron and X-ray Detection [Slides]

Element6 has come out of a two year production pause (pre-COVID) with material that lacks their previous QC – some is excellent, but screening is needed. Applied Diamond can now make usable polycrystalline material, for applications not requiring absolute flux calibration. A large area possible (1cm 2 ). Great Lakes Crystal Technology has made great progress in two years, but still needs development to become a trusted supplier of single crystal material. LANL staff (Dongsung Kim) has developed proficient lithography and bonding expertise at CINT to make devices from vendor supplied material. LANL staff has continued and expanded capabilities for device testing at NSLS-II.

EM and beam dynamics modeling of CCL with CST Studio

The 800-MeV proton linac at LANSCE consists of a drift-tube linac, which brings the beam to 100 MeV, followed by a coupled-cavity linac (CCL). Each of 44 CCL modules contain multiple tanks, and it is fed by a single 805-MHz klystron. CCL tanks are multi-cell blocks of identical re-entrant sidecoupled cavities, which are followed by drifts with magnetic quadrupole doublets. Bridge couplers – special cavities displaced from the beam axis – electromagnetically couple CCL tanks over such drifts. We have developed 3D CST models of CCL tanks of the LANSCE linac. Their electromagnetic analysis is performed using MicroWave Studio. Beam dynamics is modeled with Particle Studio for bunch trains with realistic beam distributions using the CST calculated RF fields and quadrupole magnetic fields to determine the output beam parameters.

Experimental Study of Fixed Plate Insert for Window Protection

Evidenced from experiments to date, NorthStar can expect that potentially significant changes in the target cooling passages are likely due to disk shape changes by thermal distortions or breakage. In the bulk of the target the result will be increased He flow in some channels and decreased flow in others.

Development and Test of Simulation Tools for EIC Beam-Beam Interaction (Final Technical Report)

This final technical report summarizes the work of the Michigan State University (MSU) team supported by grant # DE-SC0018973 awarded by the Office of Nuclear Physics, Department of Energy. The awarded proposal is a joint effort of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL, led by Dr. Yun Luo), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL, led by Dr. Ji Qiang), Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF, led by Dr. Yves Roblin) and MSU (led by Dr. Yue Hao). The MSU personnel supported by the grant include Dr. Yue Hao and Dr. Derong Xu, who is hired as a postdoctoral research fellow. MSU team ‘s work in this proposal focused on the beam dynamics study and numerical simulation of crabbed collision with crab cavities. Analytical calculations and numerous simulations have been done to identify beam dynamics effect out of numerical noises, study the synchro-betatron resonance in the crab crossing scheme, evaluate the effects of non-ideal settings for crab cavity and the effects of the crab crossing noises. The results have been published in journals and as conference proceedings. From the results of the proposal, we gained a clear understanding of the beam-beam interaction in the EIC designs and provided robust countermeasures to possible beam-beam interaction related to beam lifetime reduction, beam emittance growth, beam instabilities, and luminosity degradation, which significantly mitigate the technical risks associated with the EIC accelerator designs.

Numerical Analysis and Flow Induced Vibration Studies in Pressurized Helium Gas Cooling Channels

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is working with NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes (NMR) on their efforts to produce Mo-99 from the irradiation of Mo-100 targets. The NMR target consists of an Inconel window that allows the electron beam to penetrate and irradiate a stack of Mo-100 discs. The irradiation process generates large amounts of heat and is cooled using pressurized helium gas flowing at 400 g/s. LANL provides both numerical analysis support and experimental support. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for both 300 g/s and 400 g/s are performed on the NMR target to analyze the helium flow through the NMR system. The pressure drop, the mass flow rate through each of the disc and window channels and the force applied on the first disc are some of the quantities estimated using CFD. These results will be combined with Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) estimates of heat flux into the system from the electron beam to perform conjugate heat transfer analysis (CHT). The experiments presented in this report focus on the effect of the flow induced vibrations from helium flowing through the coolant gaps between the discs. There is concern that the flow induced vibrations may lead to excessive mass loss of the enriched Mo-100 discs, and the goal would be to mitigate the mass loss. This work presents benchtop tests of flow through a subset of the target stack which involves high speed imaging and displacement measurements used to estimate disc vibration, as well as mass loss.
