Results of a preliminary experimental investigation of a vapor transport fuel pin

In-Pile experimental tests were conducted on two fuel pins mounted side-by-side in a holder assembly. The fuel pins consisted of stacked fully enriched UO2 pellets enclosed in a type 316 stainless steel clad 1/2 inch outside diameter and 3 inches in length. Each fuel pin contained four pellets for a total of 22 grams of fuel weight. The experiment was operated to maintain the maximum clad temperature at 395 K corresponding to a fuel temperature at the central void surface of 2350 K. Total primary coolant water flow past the pin holder was calculated to be 110 gallons per minute. Forty-four gallons per minute at a velocity of 36.5 feet per second flowed around each fuel pin. Calculations indicated the maximum heat flux was at the point of the highest temperature and was equal to 0.24 kW/sq cm or 7.62 Btu/hr sq ft. A series of high resolution neutron radiographs of the nuclear fueled vapor transport capsule was taken. The thermal neutrons emitted from the core of the 60 megawatt Plum Brook reactor facility were used.

Surface tensions of propellants

An apparatus is described for determining the surface tension of propellants by measuring the maximum bubble pressure using two capillaries of different bores. The innovation is the use of a pressure transducer coupled to a bridge supply and a strip chart recorder for registering the development of the pressure difference as the bubble is formed and released. This enables the measurements to be made under controlled atmospheres and to be remotely operated. Preliminary experiments were done on propellant-grade hydrazine and monomethylhydrazine, and on purified hydrazine, at temperatures between 275.4 and 353.2 K. Straight-line expressions and logarithmic expressions reproduce equally well the variation of surface tension with temperature. Contaminated hydrazine, pre-exposed to coupons of 6Al-4V titanium alloy for long periods, gives slightly higher values of surface tension.

Apollo 16 far-ultraviolet camera/spectrograph - Earth observations.

A far-ultraviolet camera/spectrograph experiment was operated on the lunar surface during the Apollo 16 mission. Among the data obtained were images and spectra of the terrestrial atmosphere and geocorona in the wavelength range below 1600 angstroms. These gave the spatial distributions and relative intensities of emissions due to atomic hydrogen, atomic oxygen, molecular nitrogen, and other species - some observed spectrographically for the first time.

Probabilities for the peak flux and fluence of energetic solar protons incident on interplanetary spacecraft

Energetic protons injected into interplanetary space in solar particle events can interfere with spacecraft operations and experiments and can cause permanent degradation of some components. For future long term interplanetary and planetary missions, techniques were developed which use solar particle event data from 1956 through 1970 to predict the probability of exceeding any value of peak proton intensity or mission proton fluence. Dependences on proton energy (near 10 to 100 MeV), heliocentric distance, and phase of the solar cycle are included. The techniques are described and applied to the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 mission.

A biological and physical oceanographic remote sensing study aboard the Calypso

The paper discusses an oceanographic remote sensing program conducted aboard the R/V Calypso in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to provide information for correlating ocean measurements with remotely sensed observations. Remote sensors on satellites and aircraft are used as operations and experiment planning tools as well as for scientific data acquisition. Emphasis is on providing surface-truth measurements for OCS flights and on investigating the area of the Gulf affected by the outflow of the Mississippi River. The discussion covers the shipboard instrumentation, ocean color scanner data acquisition and results, NOAA/VHRR data analysis approach, and Landsat and APT/ATS as planning tools. The research effort has demonstrated the feasibility of using satellite data as a supportive method to aid an oceanographic research vessel on a near real-time basis.

Terrestrial bodies orbiter, LUNAR - A system for detailed global measurements of a planet's properties

The NASA Lunar Polar Orbiter, to be launched by a Delta vehicle in 1980, is designed to perform a global exploration of such moon properties as the gravity field, figure, and surface composition, as well as a lunar resource survey. The paper reviews the mission, spacecraft, and data system concepts in terms of baseline mission sequence, choice of orbits, spacecraft configuration requirements, mission sequence requirements and data system and operations. Scientific experiments planned for the Orbiter mission include geophysical altimetry and gravity experiments, heat flow experiment, magnetic field experiments, measurements of the moon's natural gamma-ray spectrum, X-ray fluorescence of lunar surface materials, sunlight reflectance spectroscopy, and spectro-stereo imaging. Characteristics of instruments designed for use in these investigations are examined. Through the use of advanced sensors and data-system techniques, coupled with well-developed spacecraft systems, the mission promises to return a very large quantity and variety of lunar data at a cost comparable with that of simpler missions in the past.

Characteristics of cosmic X-ray bursts observed with the OGO-5 satellite

Observations of 11 cosmic X-ray bursts made with the solar X-ray spectrometer aboard OGO 5 are presented. Their identification as cosmic events is based on good time coincidence with observations of cosmic gamma-ray bursts reported in the literature. The OGO-5 experiment is most sensitive to cosmic X-ray sources located in the sunward hemisphere. When this condition was satisfied and the OGO-5 experiment was operating normally, almost every cosmic gamma-ray burst reported by other observers was detected at X-ray energies of at least 32 keV. In three events the spectrum was observed down to about 10 keV. Two intense events were observed with 0.288-s time resolution, and large time variations were observed to occur in times not exceeding 0.3 s. Evidence is found that most cosmic gamma-ray bursts have photon spectra extending down to about 10 keV. The origin of these cosmic events in processes similar to those believed to occur in solar flares is briefly examined.
