Characteristics of deformable leading edge for high performance helicopter rotor

The deformable leading edge (DLE) concept to improve the blade capability in lift, drag and pitching moments has been investigated for the purpose of meeting new rotor maneuverability and susceptibility requirements. The advantages and disadvantages of this concept have been carefully examined with limited computational and experimental results. This work showed that this concept achieves a substantial improvement in lift capability and also reduces the drag and pitching moment at the same time. Effects of various parameters, such as Reynolds number, reduced frequency, mean angle of oscillation, and airfoil shape, on the performance of these airfoils were also investigated.

Damage-mitigating control of space propulsion systems for high performance and extended life

Calculations are presented showing that a substantial improvement in service life of a reusable rocket engine can be achieved by an insignificant reduction in the system dynamic performance. The paper introduces the concept of damage mitigation and formulates a continuous-time model of fatigue damage dynamics. For control of complex mechanical systems, damage prediction and damage mitigation are carried out based on the available sensory and operational information such that the plant can be inexpensively maintained and safely and efficiently steered under diverse operating conditions. The results of simulation experiments are presented for transient operations of a reusable rocket engine.

Durability testing of the AJ10-221 490 N high performance (321 sec Isp) engine

The durability of the 490 N AJ10-221 engine is characterized on the basis of data from 93 tests and a total firing life of 6.3 hr. For the three Ir/Re chambers tested, no limiting conditions were encountered in the 43,379 sec and 229 test thermal cycles. A wide range of off nominal operating conditions was successfully demonstrated.

The Effect of Compression Ratio on Knock Limits of High-Performance Fuels in a CFR Engine II : Blends of 2,2,3-Trimethylpentane with 28-R

The knock-limited performance of blends of 0,50; and 100 percent by volume of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane in 28-R fuel determined with a modified F-4 engine at three sets of conditions varying from severe to mild at each of three compression ratios (6.0, 8.0, and 10.0). A comparison of the knock-limited performance of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane with that of triptane (2,2,3-trimethylbutane) is included. The knock-Limited performance of 2,2,3-trimethylpontane was usually more sensitive to either compression ratio or inlet-air temperature than 28-R fuel, but the ratio of the knock-limited indicated mean effective pressure of a given blend containing 2,2,3-trimethypentane and 28-R to the indicated mean effective pressure of 28-R alone was not greatly affected by compression ratio if the engine operating conditions were mild. Although 2,2,3-trimethylpentane in general had a lower knock-limited performance than triptane, the characteristics of the two fuels were somewhat similar.
